In this episode, I delve into the journey of A.J. Piplica, CEO of Hermeus, a hypersonic airplane company. A Star Trek-inspired fascination for aerospace, nurtured during his time studying at Georgia Tech and working at NASA, guided Piplica into his first professional role at Spaceworks Engineering. It was here he got an opportunity to lead Generation Orbit (GO), a subsidiary focusing on hypersonic aircraft.Intriguingly, the seeds of Hermeus were sown at GO, where Piplica worked closely with Glenn Case, Skyler Shuford, and Mike Smayda, the future co-founders of Hermeus. They left the secure but limiting confines of GO to embark on a daring venture — Hermeus, betting on an audacious dream with six months of self-funded effort. Their journey involved facing skepticism, refining their business pitch, and navigating through a challenging investment landscape.Their resilience paid off when Khosla Ventures, despite early setbacks, funded them to build a prototype engine. After demonstrating their technology's capabilities, the team managed to secure significant funding during a difficult pandemic-hit period, fuelled in part by contracts from the Air Force. The funding was used to build Chimera, their first full-scale engine capable of transitioning from an afterburning turbojet to a pure ramjet. As Hermeus continues to grow, Piplica stresses the importance of hitting regular milestones, bridging funding gaps, and maintaining operations and growth. The process, he shares, involves a steep learning curve about government contracts, building lasting relationships, and responding promptly to shifting mission requirements. The vision is clear: to develop hypersonic technology that can cover large distances quickly, operate in contested environments, and rapidly adapt to changing mission needs.

AJ dialed into Pathfinder straight from the belly of the beast, i.e., Hermeus's factory in Atlanta, which was abuzz with employees and machines whirling in the background. Today's episode is brought to you by Altek Space. What is Hermeus up to?The Hermeus team is focused on shrinking the globe by developing the world's fastest passenger aircraft. The timeline for that = 2029. In the meantime,  Hermeus recently selected Pratt & Whitney's F100 turbofan for integration into its hypersonic engine, a move that the company claims will save it billions in R&D costs and years of schedule. Also in recent memory, Hermeus successfully demonstrated a turbojet to ramjet transition with its Chimera engine. Finally, Hermeus raised a $100M Series B last March to develop Quarterhorse and Darkhorse, its first and second hypersonic vehicles.Among other things, AJ and Ryan covered:— The startup's origin story— The roadmap: Chimera → Quarterhorse → Darkhorse → Halcyon— What's the state of hypersonics today?— How the Halcyon passenger aircraft will be designed— Derisking the business plan through iterative development and buying off the shelf— Lowering the cost of aircraft certification— Building in public and investing in marketing early on— Atlanta's talent density and Hermeus's recruiting effortsChapters02:40 – Welcome, AJ 06:02 – Hermeus's beginnings 10:49 – Rockets and ICBMs fly at hypersonic speeds...what's new here? AJ Piplica joined me on the Acquisition Talk podcast to discuss transportation at hypersonic speeds. He is the founder and CEO of Hermeus, which is developing the Quarterhorse aircraft intended to fly at five times the speed of sound. It uses a turbine-based combined cycle engine which uses the off-the-shelf J-85 jet engine from GE. When the J-85 accelerates to supersonic speeds, a proprietary ram-jet kicks in that uses the aircraft's forward motion to compress air, combust it with fuel, and accelerate to even higher speeds. Hermeus has already shown that a lesser gas turbine engine designed to fly at Mach 0.8 at 26,000 feet can be outfitted to fly Mach 3.2 at 60,000 feet in a test facility. That's closing in on the top speed of the famed SR-71! The first Quarterhorse prototype using the J-85 is expected to fly a couple hundred nautical miles, but the eventual transport aircraft will fly at Mach 5 for 4,000 nautical miles at an altitude of 90,000-100,000 feet. One of the interesting technical breakthroughs at Hermeus is the pre-cooler. There's a "valley of death" of sorts between Mach 2 and Mach 3 which is beyond the limits of the turbine engine but before the ramjet fully kicks in. The air entering the gas turbine engine at Mach 3 is over 800 degrees which is too hot for the materials to handle. Hermeus' pre-cooler cools down that air by 675 degrees in one-tenth of a second so that the turbine engine can continue to provide thrust. Once the Quarterhorse accelerates past that regime the turbine engine will be bypassed and the ramjet does the rest up to Mach 5. "It's not a very efficient system," AJ noted, "so it's important that we accelerate through that regime relatively quickly and then transition to the ramjet." This capability isn't just about accelerating civilian transportation by reducing frictions to travel and trade. It has clear military applications. AJ points to survivable airborne ISR for the first use-case as the military environment shifts from permissive to denied. Even Iran knocked out an MQ-4C Triton back in 2019. A hypersonic reusable aircraft would be hard to see coming, and even harder to knock out. All of North Korea could be imaged in 30 minutes, for example. Since the 1970s, however, the US Air Force has focused almost entirely on stealth (low radar cross section) as the primary means of survivability. Speed, altitude, and maneuverability are other knobs that can be turned in that equation. These knobs become more important as radar catches up to stealth. The Air Force is hedging their bets. Hermeus was awarded the largest STRATFI award yet, with $30 million coming from the Air Force including $15 million from PEO executive airlift, and a matched $30 million from private sources. In the episode, AJ talks about what his company had to do to win the contract and provides advice for other companies trying to transition into defense programs. In 2018, former engineers from SpaceX and Blue Origin formed their own company with the hope of revolutionizing travel here on Earth instead of in space.Hermeus says it's developing the world's fastest reusable aircraft, capable of reaching speeds of Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound. And it says a new Pentagon contract will help get its first jet off the ground. The company announced a $60 million agreement with the U.S. Air Force to test its first aircraft, dubbed Quarterhorse, which officials said would be the first in a line of autonomous, high-speed aircraft.Under the deal, Hermeus would have three years to develop, build and test a concept aircraft, which would use a turbine-based combined cycle engine based on GE's J85 turbojet engine. The company laid out an ambitious plan to validate its technology at much lower costs than would ordinarily be expected for this type of flight system.Hermeus said it would use autonomous and reusable systems, “ruthlessly” focused requirements, and a hardware-rich program to help keep expenses down. It also vowed to push its systems to the point of failure, which would ultimately make the engineering process faster while improving both R&D and flight safety. Officials said the learning process would require real-world testing, particularly when exploring speeds that no airbreathing aircraft has flown before.Although the military has obvious interest in hypersonic systems, Hermeus officials said the world's fastest reusable aircraft could unlock trillions in additional economic growth every year. At some 3,000 miles per hour, a Mach 5 aircraft would cut the flight time from New York to London from the current seven hours down to a brisk 90 minutes.

Episode Overview:   As young girls and products of our times, it's not uncommon to be told not to pursue a career simply because it's a male dominated field. Though, with the times changing and parents realising and challenging gender norms-- we have some women that now that have risen from these teachings-- proving that we are just as capable of handling these careers.   One of them is Payton Barnwell, a remarkable woman that has designed hypersonic research programs and worked on innovations for astronaut nutrition at the NASA Kennedy Space Center. With her work, she has easily paved a way for young women in the field of engineering and aeronautical sciences.   In this episode, Payton brushes up on her childhood, how she got to where she is now and where she plans to go for her future in the field.    Episode Highlights:   Being told she was too weak in math to be an engineer Deciding on a career path How her internship with NASA went What she does at work The importance of mentoring   About Payton Barnwell:   Payton Barnwell is a young professional that graduated from Florida Polytechnic University last 2019. Since then, she has worked for NASA and then eventually moved onto working under The Spaceship Company where she is an Associate Flight Sciences Engineer.   Her passion for space exploration brought unique opportunities for her, allowing her to work on innovative solutions to traditional astronaut nutrition, and designing an Air Force designated X-Plane research program at Generation Orbit as a 2018 Brooke Owens Fellow, out in the Mojave Desert with The Spaceship Company.   Connect with Payton:   Payton Barnwell | LinkedIn Payton Barnwell | Twitter Payton Barnwell | Website   Notable Women Mentioned and Related to this Episode:   Emily Calandrelli TV host/producer of Xploration Outer Space and Emily's Wonder Lab. @TheSpaceGal Cassie Lee One of the founders of the Brooke Owens Fellowship. www.brookeowensfellowship.org Natalie Brown Technical Recruiter at Hermeus (hypersonic commercial planes), she has the interesting challenge of trying to find women to come to their incredibly niche, but amazing, area of work. Vertical Aerospace Orders Surge and Are Used Planes a Thing? 0:00This episode is brought to you by Weather Guard Lightning Tech at Weather Guard. We support design engineers and make lightning protection easy. You're listening to the stroke podcast. I'm Dan Blewett. 0:18I'm Allen Hall. 0:19And here on struck we talk about everything aviation, aerospace engineering and lightning protection. Alright, welcome back to the struck aerospace engineering podcast. I'm your co host, Dan Blewett. On today's episode, we're going to talk about used planes, how long do they last? And what's the market like for older Airbus and Boeing aircraft? And is this going to hurt their sales of new aircraft, and our engineering segment we'll talk about Hermeus. They are looking to create a Mach 5 aircraft and they are working in conjunction with the Air Force to develop the next Air Force One Mach addition. So we'll talk about some of the engineering challenges that will come out of them. And then there are a VTOL segment lots on Vertical Aerospace today, which they've been in the news quite a bit. 2 billion worth of orders from Avalon, which entails quite a bit of quite a lot that gets 500 plane orders. American Airlines has also put an order for 250 planes, Virgin Atlantic 150. So there's a lot going on here. And it looks like they're gonna go public with SPAC merger. So lots in the in the news about Vertical Aerospace, and they admittedly have a beautiful looking prototype. I'm into it. But we'll see what Alan has to say. So first, Alan, let's chat about USD plane. So especially popular right now is the Airbus a 330, with smaller airlines who want to save money or startups, and they can be reduced, sometimes up to close to 50% of their sticker price. What are like what's the deal with the a 330? And why is it so it's such an attractive use plane and what what kind of routes can the a 330 fly? 2:07Well, it's a bigger airplane. So it's a twin aisle airplane. So it's it's made for longer haul routes. Similar to what like a triple seven would do. And the but that airplane is much older in terms of when it was developed. The problem with anything as twin owl right now is that there's not a lot of long route flights going on anywhere in the world. Forget about you know, United States, Europe is really hard you still now so there's there's just a depressed market. There's a lot of airplanes, twin, all airplanes that are parked right now. And obviously, the newest ones are going to retain most of their value, but the older ones are gonna have a hard time especially older designs are gonna have a hard time maintaining their value through this just because they're older designs, you can buy a new one for also a discounted or newer one for a discounted price. Why wouldn't I do that? You totally what. And I think a lot of times in these down situations and COVID has been one big downer for the airline industry, airplane models just disappear for the most part or they are they shift where their main focus is they get because they're just less expensive to operate, they can be operated by a lot of airlines that couldn't otherwise afford them. And so you'll you'll see,
