In this episode, Ben and Pat are joined by special guest Daniele Bolelli (History on Fire, the Drunken Taoist) to discuss his favorite badass of all time -- Japanese Zen Buddhist monk Ikkyu Sojun, an extremely unlikely character more well-known for his wild parties and drunken carousing than his ability to slaughter his foes on the battlefield. Daniele discusses the strange, mystical, and genuinely-hilarious life of one of Japan's most eccentric weirdoes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In Conversation with Daniele Bolelli. Danielle is the host of the incredible History on Fire Podcast. We get together from time to time and discuss the state of the world, our moment in history through the lenses of our individual and shared philosophies.Daniele is wonderful conversationalist with a discerning eye on both our complicated human history and our troubling present moment. We discussthe uniqueness of our shared moment in history, the general state of apathy that we find in company and conversation, dogmatic ideology, ideological capture, identity politics, our default psychological models of adapting to social challenge, andthe disturbing trend of mass appeal of content and opinion on streaming services and the internet in general. On this episode, my guest is author, educator, martial artist, and the host of podcasts, The Drunken Taoist and History on Fire, Daniele Bolelli! We talk about Zen, the Tao, failure, the lack of connection in America and more!
My guest in none other than Daniele Bolelli, the host of the popular podcast "History on Fire" captured beautifully by its tagline: Whether you like history or not, if you care about bravery, wisdom, passion, larger than life characters and some of the most emotionally intense moments in human experience, Let's set History on Fire.In this episode we talk a bit about history but probably more about the present moment, and Daniele's insights on the dysfunction of social discourse and political process in America. It is a warm and intellectual conversation which enthusiasts of philosophy and current affairs will find engaging. With any luck, there will be a part 2.Daniele Bolelli is an Italian-American writer, martial artist, and university professor, and an accomplished exponent of all three. He is known for his work in the fields of history and philosophy. He is a year older than me, he comes from a family of artists and intellectuals. Daniele has a Ph.D. in Comparative Religion from the UCLA, and has taught courses on the history of religion, philosophy, and the martial arts at various universities. Daniele is the author of several books, including "On the Warrior's Path," "Create Your Own Religion," and "Not Afraid." If for some insane reason History is not your jam, you can make contact with Daniele's philosophical conversations on the Drunken Taoist podcast as well.http://historyonfirepodcast.com/https://thedrunkentaoist.com/Join Rocco's virtual Dojo: https://mymojodojolife.com/ Or follow Rocco's other work at: https://eyeswideopenlife.orginfo@eyeswideopenlife.org
Daniele Bolelli is martial artist, writer, professor, and host of History On Fire and The Drunken Taoist podcasts. He's the author of several books on philosophy and he's disarmingly down to earth. He also has a cool name and very smooth Italian accent.Topics include:* Real Philosophers vs Academic Philosophers.* The story of Ikkyu Sojun. An enlightened monk that loved sake and women.* How to deal with tragedy.* Foundational insights on parenting and being a good spouse.* What is sacred and what is profane? * How rituals can maintain sacredness.* Why kindness is the best measure of one's philosophy.* Speculations on Nietzsche and his perspective on Love.* On being “life-affirming.” Why is it so important and why is it so hard?* The defiant power of gallows humour. In episode 379 of The Strenuous Life Podcast I talk with podcaster, martial artist, and history professor Daniele Bolelli about the characteristics of fascism. This is a loaded topic for both of us, because both of our families lived in fascist states during World War 2 (mine in Germany, his in Italy). Which is why I almost went with an alternate title, namely A German and an Italian Walk Into a Bar... The terms 'fascism' sure gets thrown around a lot these days. But words have meaning, and so you can't just use it as an insult to describe anything you don't like. S0 what is it? As Daniele explains, there isn't a single definition of fascism; instead it's a checklist and the more items an ideology checks off then the closer they are to fascism. Here are some of the major items for Daniele... Nostalgia for a mythic past Reliance on an authority figure who will fix everything Nationalism A cult of masculinity and cracking down on anyone who doesn't embody traditional values A hawkish desire for war against internal and external enemies Strong alliances with traditional power structures like industry and religion Anti-intellectualism and a distrust of expertise Conservative values, Subordination of women, anti-abortion, anti-birth control Anti-democratic values Emphasis on law and order Other things we discuss are Giorgia Meloni (the Prime Minister of Italy), economic situations before the rise of fascism, horseshoe theory and the eventual convergence of extreme left and extreme right, and the danger of fascism in the world right now. More Daniele Bolelli... Here are some places you can get more Daniele Bolelli... His History on Fire Podcast (highly recommended) His History on Fire Patreon if you want more content and support good work He's on Instagram @daniele_bolelli More Definitions of Fascism Fascism is a tricky word, and many different people have taken stabs at defining it. Here are a few of my favorites... I found Jason Stanley's 10 traits of a fascist movement a very useful starting point. Umberto Eco's essay Ur-Fascism, originally published in the New York Review, included a 14 point list of the features of fascism. He identified that, for fascists, the enemy must simultaneously be very weak and very strong, which I found fascinating because I see it so often in the discourse these days. British political scientist Roger Griffin has defined the fascistic core as an ultranationalism focused on the idea of rebirth of a people or a nation (or palingenetic ultranationalism). As is so often the case, the Wikipedia article on the definitions of fascism is a useful starting point if you want to go deeper into this topic.

On this episode of The AUXORO Podcast, Daniele Bolelli and Zach discuss the Japanese monk Ikkyu Sojun who embraced a life full of zen, sex, and sake. Avoiding monasteries, Ikkyu wrote that if you wanted to find him to "try the fish shop, the wine parlor, or the brothel." Daniele and Zach also get into Daniele's experience with a sex worker, how luck has a massive, often underrated influence on outcome, movie favorites like Kill Bill, and how to flow with the chaos of life like waves in the water. "History on Fire" is a podcast by author and university professor Daniele Bolelli. As we were invovled in researching episode 85 of History on Fire we were allowed to publish this episode as a bonus episode for you guys. You can find more great episodes of History on Fire here: https://luminarypodcasts.com/listen/daniele-bolelli/history-on-fire/10c7f0c4-18a7-44e8-ab47-0ba1a54a4c09?coun“I cut off their heads. I burned them with fire. With their blood I dyed the mountain red like red wool. Men I impaled on stakes. The city I destroyed, devastated… the young men and maidens I burned in the fire.” Ashurnairpal II“I filled the wide plain with the corpses of his warriors…. These [rebels] I impaled on stakes. …A pyramid of heads I erected in front of the city.” Salmaneser III“Don't let Hezekiah mislead you by saying, ‘The Lord will rescue us!' Have the gods of any other nations ever saved their people from the king of Assyria? What happened to the gods of Hamath and Arpad? And what about the gods of Sepharvaim? Did any god rescue Samaria from my power? What god of any nation has ever been able to save its people from my power? So what makes you think that the Lord can rescue Jerusalem from me?” Isaiah 36:18-20History is a fickle beast. Some events may not seem like much at the time when they happen, but they end up radically shaping all events afterwards. For example, had just one event turned out different—an event largely forgotten today, such as the siege of Jerusalem in 701 BCE—and all of history would have changed. If the siege had ended in the way everyone expected it to end, Judaism would have disappeared from the pages of history, and Christianity and Islam would have never been born. Can you imagine how different the world would be if you were to remove the entire history of the three main monotheistic religions? In this episode we'll tackle this greatest of ‘what ifs.' In the process of doing so, we'll discuss the origins of Western monotheism, Assyrian culture, Hebrew legends, the Assyrian protection racket, the clash between monotheistic Hebrews and polytheistic Hebrews, how the Assyrians turned 10 of the tribes of Israel into the “lost tribes”, committing ‘suicide by Assyrian', the destruction of Lachish, what may have happened in Jerusalem in 701 BCE, and much more. This is one of those podcasts I would recommend to ANYONE. In this show I am joined by my brother Daniele Bolelli: writer, professor, martial artist, and host of History On Fire and The Drunken Taoist podcasts. I brought him in to talk about a profound piece of literature that reveals deeper insights every time I pick it up--the Tao Te Ching. We go through numerous passages and explore their implications together. Along the way we make a slight detour, discussing one of my great heroes, Ikkyu Sojun. The rebellious, lascivious zen monk famous for the words “Throw me into hell, and I'll find a way to enjoy it.” This podcast is one of the best operating manuals for any situation life presents us with. If we don't learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it. Once again, I placed my faith in rural internet, and once again it let me down...when I'm interviewing the host of History On Fire, one of my favorite history podcasts...who has a huge audience...and it is totally not worth his time to sit down with some yokel with shitty internet service. Luckily, Daniele is a trooper and an all around great guy, and he hung around and enlightened us with his knowledge and perspective on history, particularly on the American West! This was a real honor for me, and to join the ranks of Dan Carlin, Adam Corolla and Joe Rogan in chatting with this guy, well its kinda surreal. Great conversation, you're gonna love it! As many of you are aware, I was recently featured among many other, far more talented history podcasters on Daniele Bolelli's History on Fire podcast in which we all discussed various figures and events in history that created massive ripples that no one could have predicted. My segment was focused on Confucius and how he basically shaped Chinese civilization forever, from the level of the family to the running of the government even under the Communists. In a generous move, the fine people at Luminary Media decided to let all of us present our segments on our own podcast feeds, so if you would like to hear my segment on its own as a little bonus, here you go! It's short (well, miniscule) by History Impossible standards, but it's got all the hallmarks: a weirdo main character, far reaching effects and influence, and consequences no one could possibly have predicted. Many thanks to Daniele Bolelli for organizing this, to my amazingly talented fellow podcasters, and to the folks at Luminary for making this all possible. We're going back in time this week to celebrate the past: that's right, it's our HISTORY themed week. Liz takes a look at the tumultuous years of the Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton presidencies with seasons one and two of Slow Burn. This is part 2 of a series I’ve been working on with Daniele Bolelli. In part 1, he covered the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre carried out by the US Army. I was working on my next major series when Daniele asked me to do a companion episode on My Lai, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. From his description: “Because I felt like I was ordered to do it, and it seemed like that, at the time I felt like I was doing the right thing.” —Private First Class Paul Meadlo explaining his role in the My Lai Massacre. “How do you shoot babies?” Meadlo was then asked. His reply… “I don’t know. It’s just one of them things.” “I felt then and I still do that I acted as I was directed, and I carried out the order that I was given and I do not feel wrong in doing so.” — Lieutenant William Calley Jr. addressing his own leadership during the action. “Every Day/ On our fellow man we prey/ Dog eat Dog/ To Get by/ Hope you like my genocide” — The Offspring “Hello darkness, my old friend…” — Simon and Garfunkel “I believe now it is but the commencement of war with this tribe, which must result in their extermination.” — Major Jacob Downing “Damn any man who sympathizes with Indians! … I have come to kill Indians, and believe it is right and honorable to use any means under God’s heaven to kill Indians. … Kill and scalp all, big and little; nits make lice.” — Quote attributed to Colonel John Chivington “They were so honorable and so strong, but I felt like they were alone and sometimes when you want to do the right thing, the people that want to do the right thing suffer… even today.” —Lorraine Waters about Silas Soule and Joseph Cramer “It was hard to see little children on their knees… having their brains beat out by men professing to be civilized.” — Silas Soule I'm not going to lie. This is one of the darkest episodes of History on Fire. But there are reasons for this journey into the heart of darkness. The stories of Sand Creek and My Lai offer an opportunity to explore human agency, the choices separating good and evil, and how some individuals can choose to become sources of light even in the most horrible circumstances. In part B, I hand the microphone to my friend and master podcaster Darryl Cooper (from The Martyrmade Podcast.) Darryl explores the context of the Cold War in order to come to terms with what happened at My Lai, in Vietnam, in 1968. Horror abounds, but if you are looking for heroes in the midst of the horror, you can do a lot worse than hear about the story of Hugh Thompson. Listen on iTunes!

Daniele Bolelli is a writer, martial artist, university professor, and podcaster. He was born in Italy and currently lives in Los Angeles. He's made multiple appearances on The Joe Rogan Experience. Visit www.DanieleBolelli.com for more! After graduating from UCLA with a B.A. in Anthropology, and earning graduate degrees at UCLA (in American Indian Studies) and CSULB (History), Bolelli began teaching at several colleges in Southern California. Unlike most scholars who tend to specialize in one particular field of knowledge, Bolelli adopts a “renaissance” man-approach to teaching that has led him to lecture on a wide range of subjects including American Indian history and philosophy, history of the United States, world religions, history of ancient Rome, history and philosophy of martial arts, the ethnic experience in the United States, world history, plus several courses on the relationship between cinema and history. Perhaps even more peculiar than his unusually extensive repertoire is Bolelli’s lecturing style. Much like his writing, in fact, his lecturing style combines discussions of complex, deep subjects with much humor and “street lingo.” For this reason, he has been defined as “half stand up comedian and half Zen master.” This odd mix has made him extremely popular among students. Martial Arts: Bolelli has trained in several styles of martial arts including kung fu san soo, taijiquan, baguazhang, xingyiquan, submission wrestling, Brazilian jiujitsu, boxing, and judo. He holds a fifth degree black belt in kung fu san soo–a style that he has taught for several years at UCLA’s John Wooden Center. Bolelli also coached and fought professionally in mixed martial arts (MMA). Media and Podcasting: Bolelli was featured in I Am Bruce Lee which broke Spike TV’s rating record for documentaries. He has appeared as a guest on popular podcasts such as Duncan Trussell’s, Adam Carolla’s and Joe Rogan’s. In October 2012, Bolelli began his own podcast named The Drunken Taoist Podcast. A little over a month after its debut, The Drunken Taoist Podcast was ranked number 1 in the world in the Philosophy section of iTunes. In 2015, Bolelli joined his friend, pro-skateboarder and musician, Mike Vallely as co-host of Vallely’s podcast, The Mike V Show. In 2015, Bolelli also released the first episodes of a new historical podcast called “History on Fire.”
