Clay interviews Hampton Sides, the author of a dozen outstanding books, including studies of Kit Carson, Martin Luther King's assassin James Earl Ray, the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in Korea, and most recently, The Wide, Wide Sea, Sides' study of the third and fatal voyage of Captain James Cook. How does one write about a British explorer like James Cook in the 21st century when Cook's statues around the world are being defaced, decapitated, or torn down due to his role in disrupting the indigenous cultures he encountered in his voyages? Sides talks about his strategy of coming down somewhere in the middle on this cultural and political question. He takes comfort in that his book, The Wide, Wide Sea,has been criticized from both ends of the political spectrum. We talk, too, about his forthcoming book about the Sand Creek Massacre in eastern Colorado on November 29, 1864.

It's Tuesday, and we're flipping through the headlines you need to know before the holiday break. First, the 160th anniversary of the Sand Creek Massacre is on Friday, and Colorado is still grappling with how we've interpreted our own shameful history. Then, Mayor Johnston is already backtracking on some controversial comments he made on Trump's “Operation Aurora,” DPS votes to shut down more neighborhood schools, and state legislators look to overhaul the system for filling vacant seats. As you may know, November is Native American Heritage Month. November 29 is also the 160th remembrance of the Sand Creek Massacre, in which a Methodist pastor led the slaughter of 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho peoples. Most of the loved ones who were slain were women, children, and elders. The United Methodist Church is in a repenting and repairing process for its involvement in this particular incident but also for its mistreatment of Native Americans throughout history. The Cheyenne people didn't just experience Sand Creek, but multiple other traumas including displacement, boarding schools, other massacres, and the suppression of cultural norms. This has led to generational traumas that persist to this very day. This episode of Faith Talks is focused on Native American Heritage Month and the Sand Creek Massacre. We will talk with Otto Braided Hair, who is a Northern Cheyenne descendant, and Bishop Elaine Stanovsky, who co-chaired, along with Otto, an advisory report on the Sand Creek Massacre during the 2016 General Conference in Portland, Oregon. he Sand Creek Massacre was the deadliest day in Colorado history, and it changed Cheyenne and Arapaho people forever. On the morning of November 29, 1864, US troops under the command of Colonel John M. Chivington attacked a peaceful camp of Cheyenne and Arapaho people made up mostly of women, children, and elders along the Big Sandy Creek in Southeastern Colorado, near the present day town of Eads. The scale of the massacre was horrifying. More than 230 men, women, and children were murdered in the most brutal ways imaginable. US troops mutilated living and dead bodies, taking body parts as gruesome trophies back to be paraded and displayed in Denver.  This is the first episode in a series about the Sand Creek Massacre. Throughout the series, we'll focus on sharing Cheyenne and Arapaho accounts and oral histories.

Our guest today is award-winning novelist Tommy Orange. Orange's debut novel, There There, centered on a Native American experience that is less commonly featured in US literature - the lives of urban Native Americans. It was one of 2019's most critically acclaimed books, and now, he's written a followup. It's called Wandering Stars. This new book features many of the same characters, while tracing the traumatic legacies of the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and government-run boarding schools, like the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. On February 27th, 2024, Orange came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to talk to author Dave Eggers. Hundreds of students and teachers attended - and among other things, Orange talked about what it's like to have his book as assigned reading in schools.

Earlier this month, History Colorado released a major report documenting the history of Indigenous “boarding schools” across our state, including one in Denver, between 1880 and 1920. The media covered the report as a landmark step forward from a tragic chapter in our state's history, and some have called on Governor Jared Polis to make a formal apology on behalf of the state. But while our elected officials are celebrating the report as a positive step toward healing and reconciliation, many Indigenous people are not. So today, host Bree Davies speaks with the co-chairs of the Denver American Indian Commission — stand-up comedian Joshua Emerson and past guest Raven Payment — about what this report means to Denver's Indigenous community. Bree mentioned History Colorado's recent history of rebuilding trust with Indigenous communities. How the Sand Creek Massacre is remembered has changed over the years. The original narrative described the attack as a battle victory for the U.S. Army led by Col. John Chivington. But a more accurate and sinister account soon emerged that described a deplorable attack on mostly women, children, and elders from the Cheyenne and Arapahoe tribes. Today on Native America Calling, we learn how organizers of the new exhibit "The Sand Creek Massacre: The Betrayal that Changed Cheyenne and Arapaho People Forever" at the History Colorado Center worked with tribal representatives to tell an accurate and sensitive portrayal of the tragic event in 1864 with Chester Whiteman (Southern Cheyenne), Cheyenne coordinator of the Culture Program of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes; Fred Mosqueda (Cheyenne and Arapaho), Arapaho Language and Culture Program Coordinator for the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma; and Sam Bock, lead exhibit developer for the Sand Creek Massacre exhibition and historian for History Colorado.

For the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes, the Sand Creek Massacre of November 29, 1864 doesn't feel like distant history at all. That's the day that the Colorado cavalry tortured and killed over 200 people, mostly women, children, and elderly – one of the worst atrocities in U.S. history. To the tribes, it feels like there's still a lot of healing to do. And so, these days, they're working to do just that.

Host and guest share Denver Public School roots followed by decades as Colorado attorneys. We talk about America's most important new lawyer, Special Counsel Jack Smith.   In this candid discussion, ADL's Regional Director of Mountain States Division talks turkey about Donald Trump, January 6 and the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville in August of 2017. The ADL takes on Trump when he displays his bigotry and Scott Levin explains the process.   These are best and worst of times when it comes to antisemitism in Colorado. We celebrate midterm victories by Governor Polis, AG Weiser, and SoS Griswold. Adam Frisch almost beat Boebert and could've done so if he got the backing of Ross Kaminsky at KOA who instead told fans to vote all GOP in CO.   We discuss Ross Kaminsky and Krista Kafer, two Colorado media members who backed Trump in 2020 after not backing him in 2016. WTF Kafer was subject of Rabbi Rick Rheins' sermon (Episode 119) in which Scott Levin and DU Prof. Nader Hashemi also mentioned.   Kafer also came to the defense of Steve Durham who was a guest on that same memorable Episode 119. Scott Levin reveals how Durham's harsh position softened after the podcast discussions. Sadly, Krista Kafer and Colorado Springs Gazette like pretending Nazis came from political left. https://www.denverpost.com/2022/10/25/steve-durham-facism-socialism-genocide-state-board-education/   Learn about ADL's decision to tell Fox to fire Tucker Carlson. Kanye West and Kyrie Irving are discussed. Dave Chappelle's SNL monologue is played and criticized. Not cool Dave. Not helpful. Tropes get people killed.   ADL has weighed in on Elon Musk. Is Musk bigoted against Jews? Time will tell, but there are many clues to analyze. Like Henry Ford, Musk has built a huge car company, and is now branching out to a gigantic media platform. Toward what end? The ADL is concerned. https://www.adl.org/resources/blog/5-things-adl-watching-following-elon-musk-buying-twitter   Mount Evans is now destined to become Mount Blue Sky which is a great thing. Governor Evans disgraced his office when he authorized the slaughter of 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho people at the Sand Creek Massacre. The ADL was part of the process. Find out more.   Dave Gunders delivers a perfect goodbye song for disgraced Gov. Evans with his song, Goin' Away Blues. Show Troubadour discuss appointment of Jack Smith as Special Counsel. The 1864 Sand Creek Massacre was one of the most horrific moments in Colorado history — hundreds of Cheyenne and Arapaho women, children, and elders were murdered by U.S. soldiers as they camped under a white flag of peace. More than 150 years later, the painful remnants of this brutal mass murder are still fresh for many survivors' descendants, but they haven't always been treated respectfully by those in charge of commemorating our state's history. Host Bree Davies sits down with Westword editor Patricia Calhoun to talk about the story she broke about the last time History Colorado tried to open an exhibit dedicated to the Sand Creek Massacre, in 2012, and the decade of soul-searching that led to the new one opening next month.  Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland recently dedicated more than 3,000 additional acres of land to become part of the Sand Creek Massacre Historic Site. Almost a decade after the first ill-conceived History Colorado exhibit closed, the museum will open a brand exhibit with support of the tribes next month.  We talked extensively about Patty's 2013 Westword investigation, “A Century and a Half Later, the Wounds of Sand Creek are Still Fresh”, which looked into History Colorado's mishandling of its first Sand Creek Massacre exhibit.  In the newscast, Bree mentioned Camp Hale — Learn more about the new historic site from our pal, reporter Catie Cheshire at Westword, in this story: ”Five Things Joe Biden Should Know About Camp Hale and Leadville”. The Legacy Series explores the lived experiences and impact of student leaders at The University of Denver (DU). This series has three goals: -Center decolonization and inform the DU community of DU's colonial roots and perpetuation of racism, hate, and discrimination -Memorialize the resilience and brilliance of student leaders and their allies, offering a behind-the-scenes of their labor -Alert the DU community to the harms that are continually inflicted upon student leaders at the University of Denver At a foundational level, a large portion of the activism at DU has sought to force DU to acknowledge and confront its colonial roots and perpetuation of colonialism and racism. Many who join the DU community are unfamiliar with the history of The Sand Creek Massacre as well as the founder of DU, John Evans', culpability for the massacre. This history is imperative to understand the continued demand to remove the pioneer nickname at the University of Denver.  More Information and Resources: https://theragepodcast.com/legacy-part-one-the-past-informs-the-present-addressing-dus-colonial-roots/ Related Episodes: https://theragepodcast.com/tag/rememberxlegacyseries/
