The zoo is one of the funnest places to go as a kid. I remember taking a trip to Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City one summer as a kid and observing the monkeys! It's crazy how much they resemble humans sometimes! We all have a part of our brains that are monkey like.  This is the part of our brain that wants to keep us safe, have fun, and conserve energy.  This monkey part, although it is very helpful when in actual danger, sometimes isn't very helpful and can create problems.  In this podcast we talk about watching this part of our brain when it becomes dominant.  Watching our own behaviors and patterns and what tendencies we have when activated.   We talk about our 3 teams.  Team Hyper Home Team and  Team Hypo All day long we hope to be flexible and go back and forth between these assigned states, and one of the best ways to practice being flexcible and moving back and forth is to observe the monkey! Then, reassure that monke everything is fine. We all are just big, scared kids inside looking for safety and validation it's all ok. We all do our best to cope with stress and manage our monkeys every day, but maybe taking a step back to be an observer and then reassuring ourselves are just the steps we need to be flexible and aware. Listen in for more!

It was one of the most beautiful memories I have ever had. I can still picture it so vividly. We were almost the only ones at the zoo, the snow was lightly falling, and it was such a spiritual and beautiful moment. I looked at my wife and my two boys and I was thinking I know this is what I want. I started to have that celestial mindset which shifted my whole perspective on life and how I live it now."

After a yearlong wait, Utah's Hogle Zoo successfully captured the birth of a new 98-pound male zebra on camera. Ziva, a 10-year-old Hartmann's mountain zebra, delivered the baby zebra — also called a foal — at approximately 7:11 p.m. on June 2. Within the first hour of his birth, the foal nursed, stood on his own and began walking. “He was super active right off the bat, super energetic and doing lots of what we like to call zoomies,” said Rachel Mozingo, a senior keeper of the zoo's African Savanna exhibit. “Zoomies” are playful gallops that are natural behavior for young zebras in the wild who need to quickly be on the move from predators after birth, she said. Visitors can now catch a glimpse of the yet-to-be-named baby zebra in the African Savanna exhibit. Read more: https://www.sltrib.com/news/2023/06/06/baby-zebra-born-utahs-hogle-zoo-is

This week we welcome Hope Carr. She is the Education Manager at Austin Zoo, as well as the founder and chairperson of the Texas Lobo Coalition, a non-profit dedicated to the restoration of the Mexican wolf to West Texas. Hope has been drawn to wild animals and wild places her entire life, and since earning her bachelor's degree in Wildlife Conservation at Brigham Young University, she has been dedicated to teaching people all about the value of wildlife. Prior to her role at the Austin Zoo, Hope worked at Utah's Hogle Zoo and the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium as an educator. We spend an amazing hour talking about how the unique Austin Zoo started off as a rescue. Then Hope talks about her experience with founding the Texas Lobo Coalition and efforts to preserve the Mexican wolf.  You can learn more about the Texas Lobo Coalition HERE You can learn more about the Austin Zoo HERE

What's your cause? If you are working in a mission-driven organization, you need to win people's hearts and minds to advance that cause, says Jeff Vanek, Director of Human Resources at Utah's Hogle Zoo. Servant leadership is well-suited for mission-driven organizations, he says, because it can support and sustain a cause and culture over time. Jeff enjoys his work at the zoo, where he learns about all aspects of the organization in his HR role, and he encounters people who approach their work with passion, creativity, and curiosity. Jeff advises others not to be afraid to be their best selves at work in the service of others.  Currently, Jeff is writing a book about servant leadership. His first book is called Somehow I Thought I Would Be Taller: Finding the Courage You Need to Grow and is available on Amazon.
