Minute One Hundred Three: From A Quiet Asgard to a Quiet Queen Joining us to say goodbye to the Warriors Three is Will Freeland from the Hype Is My Superpower podcast. In the one hundred-third minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We're back to Asgard but the streets seem empty now. Is everyone feasting? It feels a bit like an early model to showcase what they could do. Then again, the empty streets fit the music. In the dining hall, we see Asgardians happily eating. Then we cut in to see Volstagg telling a tale of fighting the Destroyer while Fandral gives him grief. But why didn't we see this table in the wide shot? It's a bit odd the way these cut together. Regardless, Volstagg's tale is fun. Interesting and unfortunate that we don't get to spend much time hearing it as his dialogue is a bit buried under Patrick Doyle's melancholic theme. It makes sense – we're here with Thor who is mourning. It's just a bummer that this is the last we see of the Warriors Three in this movie. Thor walks off, sad and lonely. Sif notices. Have we had enough of her pining in this film? It feels like there could've been a bit more. Thor briefly holds his mother's hand as they comfort each other before he walks off. We like this beat. Makes us really want more of Rene Russo. Sif rises and meets Frigga as the two watch Thor walk off. It's a sad moment and Sif acknowledges Frigga's loss of Loki. It's interesting that Frigga says nothing but puts her hand on Sif's shoulder. It's very comforting, particularly as this small gesture from a queen toward one of her subjects can be seen as such a monumental moment. As mentioned above, this is picture wrap for Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, and Josh Dallas as Volstagg, Hogun, and Fandral. It's a shame they won't get much to do in the next two Thor films. It's a moment of goodbyes and finding comfort with Will Freeland. Tune in! Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel! Minute Ninety-Two: From a Pinzgauer Ride to a Final Squeeze Joining us this week to discuss the the impending trip through Bifrost are James Anderson and Colin M. Parker, hosts of the Timeline Scavengers podcast. In the ninety-second minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... The Pinzgauer arrives at Bifrost Junction with Darcy, Erik, Sif, Hogun the Grim, Fandral, and Volstagg. It looks like Volstagg rides on the top. Is he the only one? Did they tell Volstagg he has to ride on top or was that his request? Has Thor been standing here at the Bifrost Junction calling for Heimdall this whole time? Perhaps there was a bit of a ‘Can You Read My Mind' Superman moment where Thor flew Jane to Hawaii quickly? Why didn't Thor and Jane say goodbye while they were alone here? There are the remnants of the SHIELD vehicles here. Where are the agents? Are they all walking back toward the SHIELD Crater Base? It's kinda funny how Thor keeps calling for Heimdall. It's like a kid trying to get his parent's attention. Is there a small part of Jane that starts doubting Thor again as he stands in the desert calling some stranger's name to the sky? We pine for all those minutes of Thor's Asgardian friends that we just won't get. Are the Warriors Three different facets of Thor's personality? Perhaps they're only figments of his imagination? We talk more about Heimdall's magical senses. Andy forgets that Heimdall has great hearing on top of his great sight. We discuss if his skills relate to his role or are just part of him and how it played out in the comics. We feel like we come up with a solution that works for us. It's clear regardless that Marvel has found ways to fit everyone together. We ponder if these skills actually belong to the character or... perhaps to Idri Elba himself? So how is Heimdall breathing while encased in ice? And is he just flexing or breathing hot air to soften the ice up? We love that we can see his icy footsteps into the Himinbjorg. And he gets things started up. Sure doesn't look like he's holding up very well. Back on Midgard... Again, why didn't Thor get his goodbyes done while he and Jane were alone? And again, why such big atmospheric disturbances here on Midgard? It's a great time to celebrate Heimdall breaking out of the ice and James Anderson and Colin M. Parker, hosts of the Timeline Scavengers podcast, are here for it. Tune in! Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel! Minute Eighty-Five: From The Last Stand in Puente Antiguo to Sif's Fallen Shield Joining us to discuss how everyone's doing against the Destroyer and what Thor decides to do are Robin Burdge from Karate Kid Minute and Travis Bow from Reel Comic Heroes. In the eighty-fifth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... The Destroyer certainly lives up to its name in this minute as it tears the town of Puente Antiguo apart, blowing the street and cars up as it tries to destroy Thor, Sif, and the Warriors Three. We really feel the change in Thor here, telling Sif to fight to live instead of dying so others can tell her story. And of course he also tells everyone they have to go back to Asgard to stop Loki while he holds the Destroyer back. But how is he going to do that? And how are they going to get back to Asgard? If they had, in a What If...? type of scenario, could they have beaten him? Or would they also have ended up frozen statues on the rainbow bridge? After we saw Volstagg blown out the back windows of Isabela's Diner smoldering, how is he still alive? He doesn't even have any singes or burns. Seriously fast healing those golden apples provide. There's a deleted scene involving Erik nearly dying from a shard of glass that impales him. Thor heals him with healing stones that Hogun brought. We certainly have lots of thoughts about this bit and are glad it's gone. Chris Hemsworth shines in these minutes. He carries the weight of his character and what he has to do well. But what's up with his eyes? Why does it look like he's wearing black contacts sometimes? And Sif's shield when he drops it? Why does it look so fake? It's the last minute for Robin and Travis to pipe in about the Destroyer and how it's kicking everyone's butts. Tune in! Minute Seventy-Seven: From The Plan to The Bifrost Joining us to discuss Hogun's words, the decision the Warriors Three and Sif make, Heimdall's reaction, and the Observatory kicking into high gear are once again Miles Stokes and Elisabeth Allie from the podcast Thor: The Lightning and the Storm. In the seventy-seventh minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor… Was it meant to be a moment of comedy between Sif and Hogun the Grim? Or did Sif have a different plan than Hogun? Regardless, the moment plays in a comedic way. There's also the fact that Hogun speaks again. Is that why everyone turns to him suddenly when he speaks? Could it be that they're surprised to hear from the Vanir that he feels they need to lay their lives down for the Asgardian prince? We pine for the lack of facial hair on Hogun. And where is all of their fantastic headgear? We discuss Hogun from the comics a bit as well. And we point out that they cast the actor who played Genghis Khan in the film Mongol to play Hogun, which seems to fit his look in the comics. Fandral seems to be the one more focused on following orders. To that end, it certainly fits the single traits they're each given. Fandral came close to death on Jotunheim. We wonder why we don't get any acknowledgement in this scene from him that it may be affecting his decisions here. Sif says Thor would do the same for them. But didn't he ignore their pleas on Jotunheim to leave? Or is it that she means he'd break the rules for them? We comment again on how much we'd love to see the Asgardian high school show to see all of these characters when young. Heimdall's been watching as it turns out. What rank is Heimdall as it concerns the Warriors Three and Sif? Are they on the same level? Does Loki as king change that? Again, we love Idris Elba in the role, even if he doesn't get to do much. We dig into Heimdall a bit more from the comics as well. We wonder why Heimdall does his strange fake-out things so often in this film. There certainly is an element of a dangerous game that Heimdall plays with them here as far as his loyalties because he's essentially committing treason as they are. It's a fun minute with Volstagg, Fandral, Hogun the Grim, Sif, Heimdall, Miles, and Elisabeth. Tune in! Minute Fifty: From Odin's Last Command to Erik's Library Stop Joining us to discuss Loki's ascension to the throne, the shared disdain he and the Warriors Three & Sif share, and Erik in the library is Matt Carroll, one of the two co-hosts of the award-winning MCUCast and founder of the Stranded Panda Podcast Network. In the fiftieth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Loki seems like he's being insincere with his friends when he says he can't change Odin's last command, but he also seems somewhat right in what he says. But to that end, politicians change things all the time. Who would judge Loki if he went back on Odin's last command and brought Thor back, ending his banishment? What's with the lens flare in this scene? Sif clearly is the emotion character here. Her reaction is full of anger toward Loki. Clearly, he's already cut her hair. Fandral and Hogun hold Sif back when she rises up to attack Loki. That is very much a parallel to Erik holding Jane back from the SHIELD agents. No one looks thrilled about Loki being on the throne, or about the fact that he won't change Odin's last command, but they largely all start acting as if he really is king. Volstagg comes at Loki from a different direction, one that's more affable. But even this doesn't work to change Loki's mind about reversing Odin's last command. Is Volstagg laughing because he's being sincere or because he's nervous? We try to gauge what he's doing there. Interestingly, this moment of Volstagg's isn't in the script, and we're very much glad it is. What a look Sif gives Loki before she departs. And what's with Loki's interesting (and slight) move toward Sif? They both play this so well. Jaimie Alexander and Tom Hiddleston square off perfectly. This should be a showdown in the Old West. Where are their departing salutes? Because Odin's last command stands, Thor's still on Midgard and we join Erik in the Puente Antiguo library. No idea who the background actor is here in the library. So this email Erik sends is to Hank Pym! There was a scene with a librarian reading Norse mythology to kids. It was a bit on the nose. We're glad we don't have that. We try to figure out where this is in Puente Antiguo. It seems like it's in the Greyhound Station...? Last but not least, we look at the Read Campaign poster and its history. There's a lot to unpack with Loki's comments and the Warriors Three's & Sif's reactions to them. Tune in! Minute Forty-Eight: From Three Scientists on a Roof to Three Warriors (and Sif!) on a Mission Joining us to discuss iPods, Erik's connections to Bruce Banner and Hank Pym, and the horny shadow in the throne room is Matt Carroll, one of the two co-hosts of the award-winning MCUCast and founder of the Stranded Panda Podcast Network. In the forty-eighth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... The rooftop location wasn't in the script, which makes us think there's more of a connection to the moment in Iron Man 2. But perhaps it was just a location Branagh wanted to use to give the scene a bit more flavor. Remember iPods? Those were the days... Darcy's moment about her iPod does feel very much like the Darcy we see later in WandaVision where she gets distracted from the big thing by her smaller personal thing. It's amazing how well the writers created Darcy in this script and how hard a time they had developing the Warriors Three. Could it simply be that those characters are based on the comics? By the time the Warriors Three die in Thor: Ragnarok, we just don't care. That's frustrating because we should have cared. At this point in time, however, did Kevin Feige have enough of a handle on everything? And then Erik drops a hint about Bruce Banner. Or is it Samuel Sterns? On top of Darcy's concern about her iPod, Erik drops the Easter Egg that he knew Bruce Banner. There's some debate if it may be Samuel Sterns instead but we end up locking in on Banner. To that end, it's crazy how much retconning Feige and team did to shift The Incredible Hulk‘s, Iron Man 2‘s, and Thor's timelines so they all line up. We talk about this as we learn how much history there was with Erik, Bruce, Betty, and Jane's father at Culver University. There's also an Easter Egg that ties Hank Pym to Erik here as he references sending an email to a friend who knows about SHIELD. In the script, it's called out as Pym. So why did they change that? We come up with our own theories. Darcy has that last great moment when Erik mentions emailing Hank Pym, and she reminds him they took his laptop. Great rack focus here and more great dutch angles. Leaving conversations about Bruce Banner and Hank Pym for later seasons, we return to Asgard. Is it morning? Evening? Hard to tell, but you can see amazing stars when looking up to the heights of Valaskjalf. Fandral, Sif, Hogun and Volstagg seem to be running to get to the Allfather on their throne. They're also all saluting. We try to piece together more of the architecture of this space. We think we've got it figured out now. They each have their own reactions when they see who is sitting on the throne. Clearly, it's not Odin. We end on a great shadow on the wall of Loki on the throne. It's a conversation about dutch angles, rooftops, iPods, gamma studies, and the Asgardian throne room – and Matt Carroll's here for all of it. Tune in! Minute Forty: From Talk of Treason to Talk of Heritage Joining us sadly for the last time this week is Jessica Plummer, author and contributing editor at Book Riot, as we discuss treason with the Warriors Three and Lady Sif as well as Loki's slowly growing need to know what's going on with his tranformations. In the Fortieth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We complain about the fact that we have so few great moments like this with the Warriors Three. Jessica gives us some history on the Warriors Three and Jack Kirby's character types, showing how these largely pull from a set of archetypes he used often. Did Josh Lucas want more comedy and didn't get it so didn't come back, or could he see where the treatment of Fandral and the Warriors Three was headed when he opted to not return? It speaks to what Marvel's done with characters and actors now that they largely don't want to drop out because a small role can become so much more. There's even more of Fandral, Volstagg, Hogun and Sif in the script here and it's great material, but in context of the film, it's not necessary. Still, it speaks to how great they could have been as characters if they weren't used strictly as jokes so often. Could it be that they're also upset because they know Loki is now lined up to be king? Fandral seems to realize the line between mischief and treason. Was Loki meaning to be treasonous and committing a coup d'état? Loki approaches the Casket of Ancient Winters to find out the truth. Hiddleston is terrific in this moment as he debates whether to pick the Casket up or not. It seems clear to us that he knows the truth but does this to confirm what he knows. It's almost like Odin is drawn here at this moment as well. It's clear that it's too late for Odin to tell Loki the truth here, though perhaps it would've been a better option to have been cursed and not to have been stolen after the Battle against the Jotuns. We debate the spell on Loki and how it reveals his frost giant heritage but doesn't change his size. Odin's “Stop!” was scripted as stopping the Destroyer from blasting the person picking up the Casket. We talk about how the delivery feels like there's an intensity behind it so we debate if Hopkins thought he was acting against Hiddleston here or the Destroyer. But how does the Destroyer know when the wrong person is touching the Casket? Unrelated, Odin's outfit is so beautiful and it's finally not armor! And what about those marks on frost giant Loki? When we say baby Loki, we'll have to compare markings. Last but not least, we complain some more about the blue nature of both the Casket and the Tesseract, particularly how they came out in such close proximity. From treason talk with Thor's friends to frost giant heritage arguing between Loki and Odin, we have a lot to discuss with Jessica. Tune in! Minute Thirty-Nine: From Loki's Reveal to Hogun's Suspicion Joining us in the Healing Room all week is Jessica Plummer, author and contributing editor at Book Riot. We talk about Hogun the Suspicious and his suspicions. In the thirty-ninth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... It turns out Loki was paying attention to the conversation after all, not just staring at his hand with thoughts of his heritage. We debate Loki's reveal to the group here in the Healing Room. So he told the guard but it was to keep them safe. And like Thor, Loki reveals his royal heritage with the comment about flogging the guard. Hogun's healing massage of Volstagg's arm stops, which may be the sign that he's shocked. It's hard to tell with Hogun. We agree completely with Loki's comments on Thor as a terrible option for king. Why do Thor's friends seem to disagree? Are they just too close? This conversation makes us realize that without all of the happenings in this film, Thor really would've become the party Thor from What If...? show. We debate what Loki's full intentions were. Where is Loki's head in this moment? We truly see the origin story for Loki in moments like this. Loki isn't a full-on evil villain yet but we can see elements of that here now. How much is this frost giant blue element he's seeing in himself that's throwing him off in this conversation? The conversation about flogging the guard also speaks to distract his friends' attention from everything else he's saying. Loki storms out of the Healing Room and Sif, Hogun, Fandral, and Volstagg debate his intentions. Each of the friends has their own reaction to Loki's reveal. Who is right? Their immediate suspicions of Loki make us wonder if Loki has ever been good at manipulating them or is only good at manipulating Thor. Or perhaps their jealousy of their friends with the royal blood shines through here? The Warriors Three and Sif seem as hot-headed as Thor, so perhaps they value this trait whereas Loki sees it as poor for leadership. Hogun's comment speaks to his supposed wisdom and plays with the concept that he doesn't speak much, but it also comes across as a huge leap in conclusions to say Loki or a master of magic could have brought the Jotuns to Asgard. The logic becomes Watsonian vs. Doylist – this suspicion of Hogun's feels like it has to be there simply so these characters are suspicious in the story. Would this scene have played still if they weren't suspicious at this moment? And to that end, how many masters of magic are there on Asgard? Is it just Loki and Frigga? But Odin uses magic too... So where is the line? Regardless, we struggle quite a bit with this leap – even if they're right – because it just seems too much a device by the writers. All in all, though, it's a debate with Loki while in the Healing Room. So much to discuss. Tune in! Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel! Minute Thirsty-Eight: From Healthy Muscles to a Healing Massage Joining us again is Jessica Plummer, author and contributing editor at Book Riot. We discuss more about thirst, Thor's attitude, how he speaks to people, and the Asgardian healing room. In the thirsty-eighth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... The thirst factor is still high as we kick off this minute with Jane still having a hard time not blatantly staring at Thor. Meanwhile, he gets ready to put the shirt on that she loaned him, only to find a Hello, My Name Is... sticker still attached. Turns out, we have another Easter egg buried in the name on that sticker – Donald Blake M.D. Marvel enjoys dropping Easter eggs in their films, which is a different perspective than the DC films use, where they largely avoid dropping them. But why? This shirt, however – does this mean Jane's had it for a long time but hasn't washed it? Or was it a recent break-up? Does the fact that this Thor fits perfectly so well imply that Jane has a type and Thor fits it perfectly? There was a point in development where the Donald Blake persona would be in the film and they were talking about Kevin McKidd playing him. Despite his hotness and Jane's (and our) thirst for him, Thor is rude. He clearly acts like royalty and treats everyone as if they're servants or commoners. Thor's comments about needing sustenance come off sounding like he's having an out of body experience. His mortal form? Could it be that he hasn't had a golden apple from Asgard in far too long and is actually feeling more mortal than he's ever felt before? Thor is hungry. Darcy is thirsty. But she and Erik share a look when Thor speaks the way he does. Clearly, they're tuned in to his crazy jabberings. We leave the thirst behind to journey to Asgard where we visit the Healing Room. It's Asgard at night! So they do flip around like a pancake in space! The striking difference between the rural and rundown look of Puente Antiguo and the opulence of Asgard stands out strong with this transition. Bo Welch's incredible production design gives so much weight to this scene. And did you know that's an enormous ram's head over the fire? We lay out what Hogun is actually doing here because it's never quite clear. Volstagg, Sif, and Fandral discuss why they shouldn't have let Thor go, but also how Thor saved them. Fandral seems the one we should be thirsty for but are we? Is there any thirst factor for him sitting here with his vest on and no shirt underneath? They know now that a guard told Odin where they were going but there still seems some debate if their journey was a smart idea or not. Loki seems to only be focused on the fact that his hand had turned blue earlier. With all his planning, Loki clearly struggles with this new information. Again, the opulence here – both in the production design and in the costumes – stands out as something to pay attention to. Meanwhile, in the MCU... We're still on June 10th and we talk a bit about what's happening in both The Incredible Hulk and in Iron Man 2. It's a conversation about hot bodies and the thirst that goes along with them, royal attitudes and how people react to them, and discussions in the healing room. Tune in! Minute Twenty-Six: From an Upside-Down Jotun Beast to a Right-Side Up Jotun Army It's a special week with a new guest each day! Today's guest is Will Freeland from the Hype is my Superpower podcast. He's here to talk about the fate of the Jotun Beast with us as well as our first view of Thor's flight. But how does he do a midair turn? In the twenty-sixth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... The Jotun Beast continues running along the ceiling of the crust of the surface as the ground gives way. How it does this we have no idea. But we also don't really understand how such a thin surface stays up to begin with. Is it the chemical makeup of the ice on Jotunheim? We just have to write it off as something cool to look at but nonsense when you think about it too much. Kenneth Branagh directs the action really well, using all sorts of dutch angles, dark shots, god's eye views, and more and has stayed consistent throughout this film. To that end, we're okay with some of the nonsense of the Jotun Beast on the ceiling because the scene plays so well. We had never seen it before, but when Branagh cuts to the overhead of Sif running across the crumbling ice, you can actually see the Jotun Beast dart past her on the underside of the ice surface. We're calling this Bifrost Junction. It's the only logical name for it. The three of us debate about the spot where the Asgardians stop. It's a cliff edge. Andy's assumed it's the spot where they arrived via the Bifrost. Why else would the filmmakers make it another cliff edge? Will debates that it's likely just a distant spot where Heimdall will answer them when they call for him thinking they're far enough from the danger, but it's really hard to gauge. The runes aren't here from the Bifrost, which we've seen on Midgard. Is that just a Midgard thing? or did it perhaps get covered up with snow? We'll have to keep our eyes open for future Bifrost trips. We also debate about who actually calls for Heimdall. Is it Thor? He's pretty far... We settle on it being Volstagg. Will and Matthew struggle with the accent they gave Hogun. Heimdall doesn't answer but the Jotun Beast does. Apparently, the cave system leads to an exit on the cliff face? We're not really sure. Wow. We were going to have a moment of frosty breath stopping the Asgardians. The script originally had all the Frost Giants breathing out an Icy Fog. This fog keeps the Asgardians from seeing where they're going and Thor has Loki use his magic to clear it out. It's a very different scene. With that, however, are we meant to assume that Frost Giants are magic? And Will points out that if they had included this scene instead of the Jotun Beast, it would've given Thor moments of teamwork and leadership, which he doesn't have in the Jotun Beast version. This makes a lot more sense for the film and Thor's character arc. Is the Jotun Beast actually bigger now? It's hard to tell from this perspective. Thor takes flight by swinging his hammer. But how does he do a midair turn? We cut to Thor when the Jotun Beast shows up in front of his friends. Does this imply he sees it? Or hears it? Does Thor have Heimdall-level eyesight? This is a bit confusing. What's more confusing is how Thor flies off. We debate if Thor is flying toward his friends or away. Matthew thought he was flying away to get essentially a running start but after chatting about it, we feel pretty confident we landed on him flying toward them. Still, it's a bit odd how that shot is constructed. And how does Thor turn midair when he's throwing himself around using Mjølnir? Thor takes out the Jotun Beast. By flying through its head. Then lands perfectly after another (unseen) midair turn. Or several? But how does he keep himself so clean after flying through the back of the Jotun Beast's throat? And was it just one midair turn he had to make before landing or was it more a loop-de-loop? We debate about Marvel's depiction of violence and how they decided to show the killing of the Jotun Beast. Great design work on the Jotun Beast. Turns out, Matthew was right that the Rancor was part of its reference. We love how Thor lands with such a cocky and arrogant smile on his face, only to realize all the Frost Giants are behind him and his friends, essentially surrounding them. It's a great moment. When he's flying down here, we see the crumbled ground through Utgard, so how did Laufey and the Frost Giants get here so quickly? And we struggle a bit with the eye lines here when the Frost Giants arrive. It doesn't quite seem like they're actually taller than the Asgardians. It's a fun minute with Thor performing midair turn after midair turn, and of course the sad death of the Jotun Beast. Tune in! Minute Twenty-Five: From Screaming Volstagg to Collapsing Utgard This week, we're joined by Cass Fredrickson from Lord of the Rings Minute at Dueling Genre Productions. We've got Mjølnir bringing the lightning, a collapsing city, and a run from a Jotun Beast to chat about and Cass is with us every step of the way! In the twenty-fifth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Volstagg's scream sure would've sent us running too, but then so would a giant Jotun Beast appearing from an ice shell directly behind us. How the hell do they always stay so far ahead of it? It's perpetually catching up to them as they race toward the Bifrost point. Where are they running to? The Bifrost landing point? Didn't Heimdall say Bifrost will remain closed if there's the chance they'd bring something back that could threaten Asgard? Wouldn't a charging Jotun Beast count? So are they... just running? Speaking of the Bifrost landing point, why does Heimdall have to pick them up at that one particular spot? Couldn't he get them from anywhere? This really makes no sense. Thor keeps the Frost Giants busy and presumably Laufey is seeing what Thor can do. Not quite lightning... but we're moments away. Why do they keep running straight at him? His Mjølnir spins are flicking ice shards at them and keeping them at bay, but is this for the benefit of his friends? The Frost Giants seem to be nothing more than lemmings. Just bring the lightning already! Is this Laufey's plan? To keep Thor separated from his group? There are, in fact, lots of Frost Giants running after them as well as the Jotun Beast. Is he hoping to capture everyone or is he trying to kill them all before Odin shows up? Or maybe Laufey wants to know what Thor can do and is testing his limits. Meanwhile, Loki, the Warriors Three, and Lady Sif continue their run from the Jotun Beast and the Jotuns. Now that he's injured, Fandral becomes our eyes as we see his POV over Volstagg's shoulder, watching the Jotun Beast grow closer over and over again. Sif manages to avoid getting hit. Hogun does as well. Seriously, how do they run so fast? Josh Dallas as Fandral works really well. We speculate why perhaps Dallas opted to stick with his TV show instead of returning for the sequels. Considering how the Warriors Three are treated, it makes sense. We get to see Mjølnir's power to bring the lightning down finally. This is such an iconic part of Thor and this film. It's so smart of them to hold it back until minute 25. It's neat to see that Thor actually strikes the ground with the end of the handle, not the head of the hammer, to control the lightning. The CG here holds up surprisingly well. The damage caused by Thor's lightning, however, might call into question just how much Thor can control the damage it would cause. To that end, we know Thor didn't realize Jotunheim was in such bad shape. But is he able to control this at all to make sure he doesn't destroy the entire planet? It's really Thor's dumb luck everything works. So many Frost Giants fall to their supposed deaths here because of Thor's actions. More of the planet falls to pieces. Even one of the towers of Utgardhall collapses. It's sad to lose Cass this week because we had great conversations with her about the Battle on Jotunheim, but we're glad to know she'll be back later this season for more conversation. Tune in! Minute Twenty-Three: From Headbutts to Arm Grabs This week, we're joined by Cass Fredrickson from Lord of the Rings Minute at Dueling Genre Productions. Laufey ups the battle with Hailstrum and more frost giants and we see Loki's magic in action, so there's plenty to discuss! In the twenty-third minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Thor seriously is thumping his chest with his roar to match Hailstrum's. But how seriously is he taking this fight? After Hailstrum shows Thor that he's pretty strong too, Thor takes off his head with a toss of Mjølnir. So is this a war he's starting? Has he ever been in a serious fight or has Odin always sent him in to the less serious fights? All these battles are also told from the point of view of the victors. How does that affect our opinions of Thor leading his friends here to fight? And to that end, does Thor see the Frost Giants as anything other than things to kill? I mean, when they're hit, that part explodes in shards of ice. So realistically, the violence depicted is actually pretty tame despite a massive slaughter taking place here on Jotunheim. I mean, Frost Giants shatter into ice when hit. No blood. So it's PG-13 friendly. Mjølnir's Powers are pretty damn cool. It's so fun watching Thor fight with Mjølnir, and here we get to see that it returns to him when thrown. Is Thor's pose of catching the hammer repeated when Captain America catches it in Endgame? The Warriors Three, Sif, and Loki seem more focused on teamwork than Thor does. The battle gets tougher. Hogun comes to Sif's aid. Volstagg lets everyone know that when a Frost Giant touches you, it necrotizes your skin. Why does Thor not work with everyone as a team? Is he too focused on himself? Or is it just that we really want to see what sort of cool stuff he can do? Loki doesn't really play fair, but then again that's war right? We feel okay with it because it's basically how wars are fought. But how did he get behind the pillar? We're not really sure. And to that end, is Loki's magic just magic? Or is it some other fancy sort of super-advanced science? They will call it magic later in the films and TV show... Hrm... What's with his silly flourish when he ‘turns off' his illusion? Is it just so we know that it's all with his hands? And what's this berserker Frost Giant thinking by charging to tackle Loki on the edge of a chasm? Was it like a suicide mission? We've got Fimbuldraugr, Hridgandr, and Brandrheid Undrsigr as the weapons of the Warriors Three. Why aren't Sif's sword and shield named? Or Loki's daggers? Or Loki's magic, for that matter? We're fans of Sif using her shield to protect herself from the ice bullets one Frost Giant creates and hurls at her when he strikes a puddle, but how is there standing water on this planet? Isn't everything frozen? And why would they name Hogun's, Fandral's, and Volstagg's weapons but not Sif's? We're a bit irked about that. We're all very grateful that Branagh excised the moment where Volstagg uses his mighty belly to take down a Frost Giant. Sheesh. The surprise about Loki's heritage comes up. But where does Loki's magic come from? What did we think was happening when we first saw the Frost Giant grab his arm and turn it blue? Whose magic is keeping Loki from looking like a Frost Giant? Who is playing this Frost Giant though? Andy had worked with the actor who the MCU Wiki claims is playing this role and is pretty sure it's not him. Perhaps Richard Cetrone? One other nice thing, though, is that this payoff comes so quickly after the setup of the Frost Giant touch that it's really not a problem for any of us. More fighting. Some teamwork (but not from Thor) and a surprise reveal about Loki when we see his arm turn blue. We dig in deep this minute. Tune in! Minute Nineteen: From Outskirts to In Town It's a special week indeed with not one but two guests joining us as we take the long walk into downtown Utgard – Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell from the Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast. In the nineteenth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Hogun the Grim is, well, grim about their situation. Quite honestly, however, this plays much better than how it was originally scripted. It gives us more interaction between the Warriors Three, Lady Sif, and Thor, but at the expense of the darker mood. That may speak, however, to the feel that we get from this group feeling very much like a group of college friends heading out to cause some trouble. The walk through the town of Utgard is full of blue and gray bleakness. We know Jotunheim is largely ice, but it's dark and bleak and makes it hard to see things a bit. For instance, we only just realize that these tall structures which have the vibe of a cave's stalactites and stalagmites are actually ruins of buildings in what we feel are the outskirts of this Jotun city. Speaking of Jotun cities, this is never identified but the comics identify the primary Jotun city which is named Utgard. Laufey's tower from where he rules is called Utgardhall. Again, it's never confirmed but we're going to go with it. Speaking of Jotuns, which are of course the frost giants, Jotunheim actually was the home of all giants in Norse mythology, not just frost giants. That seems to be something Marvel decided for its universe. Thor, Sif, Loki, Fandral, Volstagg, and Hogun, still walking in their same formation, travel through many beautiful shots of crumbling desolation. Again, when the Casket of Ancient Winters left the planet, Jotunheim started falling apart. That's likely why Utgard looks so rough and unrecognizable from what we saw in Odin's flashback. Utgard and Jotunheim are falling apart. To that end, why would Laufey make such a terrible deal for himself and his people? The minute ends with the group of Asgardians coming closer to Utgardhall at the center of Utgard. (See? We said we were going it it and we are.) At the last moment, we see Jotunheim's sun shining from behind Utgardhall's towers. That surprises us because we thought it was night all this time. Turns out, it's just a cold sun that gives no heat. It's a minute through which we journey but likely a much longer walk for our warriors across Jotunheim. Still, so much to discuss. Tune in! Minute Eighteen: From Asgard to Jotunheim It's a special week indeed with not one but two guests joining us on a trip through the Bifrost – Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell from the Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast. In the eighteenth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Heimdall finally finishes his warning in his stilted English. Volstagg delivers a silly line that does nothing for us except provide an opportunity to deliver Chekov's ‘full power of the Bifrost.' Everyone looks worried except for Thor, who delivers one of his best lines in the film: “I have no plans to die today.” Heimdall, of course, has an equally brilliant retort: “None do.” Tripping the Bifrost Fantastic Heimdall activates the Bifrost wormhole and each member of the group gets yanked by what looks like their stomach into it. This looks like an incredibly cool way to travel, but also looks like everyone would be throwing up. Since they left Valaskjalf, the group has been traveling in what we must assume is their ready positions: Thor in front, Sif and Loki just behind him, and Fandral, Volstagg, and Hogun behind them. Once they're pulled into the rainbow of the Bifrost, they seem to change positions. Does it reverse them? While we're in it, it seems that Thor's still in front but once they burst out over Jotunheim, Thor is third. And since it's Thor, he's working past the others to get back in front. He passes someone holding a weapon and the only person that was holding one in the Observatory was Volstagg. So it must've reversed it, right? And really, no surprise that Thor's pushing to be in front. How do you land when traveling through the Bifrost? Do you have to somehow turn yourself so you land feet first? Does the Bifrost turn you? Is it a gentle landing or do you really come in traveling at light speed? None of this makes us want to try it any time soon. The Bifrost Dumps Them on Jotunheim. The six Asgardians land on Jotunheim. Thor looks around. We saw the planet was encircled by chunks in space so presumably the planet has been falling apart since Odin took the Casket of Ancient Winters, but is this Thor's first time here? Did he realize it would look so desolate and broken? And as it turns out, Heimdall dumped them on the edge of a cliff. Was that intentional as a way to poke Thor a bit for his attitude pre-Bifrost trip? Or does he have any control over where he drops people on any given Realm? It's a wild trip through the Bifrost and we have a great conversation along the way with our guests. Tune in! Minute Fifteen: From Team-Building to Bridge-Crossing Ashley Coffin from the MCU Podcast is joining us this week to invade Jotunheim. Check her and her shows out at the links below! In the fifteenth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Thor reminds the Warriors Three and lady Sif what his father Odin went through to defeat Laufey and bring the casket back last time. He says they would just be going for answers. They're not going to invade Jotunheim. How many times have you heard that before? “I swear, I'm only having one drink.” After Sif says it's forbidden, Thor chuckles then seems to take a page from Loki's book as he tries to manipulate them all into agreeing to join. What terrible reasoning though! He's basically just saying how much fun they had before and that's enough reason to invade Jotunheim this time. So silly! But what's forbidden? To disobey Odin? Or to invade Jotunheim? Maybe it's Thor's charisma, then, because they all agree to join. Even Loki, in the extended scene, agrees to join the fight. Did Loki expect to be going? Or did he make a quick pivot when Thor asked him to go? He's pretty crafty so it would make sense. What's with Volstagg's strange flourish he does with his seasonings for his Dagwood-style cheese and bread sandwich? And off they go to invade Jotunheim. The overhead shot of the six riders racing along the streets of Asgard is breathtaking. We love seeing the giant statues hovering over them. So the rainbow bridge isn't just a rainbow like in the comics. It's impressive how they designed it to be solid of some sort with light streaks inside that are the colors of the rainbow. How do they get through the gate? How much sneaking is involved with their plan of theirs? It seems like a lot of people know. But obviously Loki's up to something as we see him whisper to a guard in the extended scene. Hogun sees as well. Why doesn't he say anything? Maybe it's that whole thing of assuming Loki's making an excuse to Odin as to why they're going somewhere. The extended scene also has some terrible exposition about Heimdall. As if they'd never met him before. Glad that's gone. Definitely moments of bad wig vs. great hair here! Did you notice the electronic notes rising up and down under Thor's theme as they cross the bridge? We're pretty sure Mark Mothersbaugh did as well because these seem to be at the forefront of his score for Thor: Ragnarok. Everything's great in this minute as the six head to invade Jotunheim, but that rainbow bridge shot is worth writing home about. We have a great time covering all of these elements and more. Tune in! Minute Eight: From Rival Brothers to Regal Parents We have our first guest! We're joined by Ryanne Bennett from the Black Girl Nerds podcast this week, swinging Mjolnir around because she's clearly worthy. Check her and her shows out at the links below! In the eighth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Odin lays out to young Thor and Loki that a good king can't be war hungry but has to be ready for it. The boys both say they're ready to lead, and this is where we start questioning Odin's parenting. He says only one of them can become king, but that they were both born for it. Is he pushing for sibling rivalry? Then again, maybe it's just his way of hinting to Loki that he's actually the son of a different king...? Meanwhile, Mjolnir makes its first appearance. We talk a bit about how it was forged and debate when it became something that only someone worthy could pick up and wield. But why is Mjolnir in Odin's vault? Is he just holding it for Thor until he's big enough? Is he afraid someone else could wield it and cause Ragnarok? Now that story time is done, let's return to the present with Thor waving Mjolnir around. It's Thor's coronation. Or is it? Was Odin actually about to crown Thor or was he just making the official announcement that Thor is his heir for when he dies? Before we jump into that, however, we have not one, not two, but THREE deleted scenes to discuss. The first involves Thor and Loki. This would've been where we first meet Thor. Does it work better? It's fun seeing him drinking, throwing his goblet into the fire and shouting “Another!” but those eyebrows are offputting... This also would've been where we first meet Loki. It's a great reveal of him in his magnificently designed (cow) helmet and outfit. We also get a conversation between the brothers that gives us a better sense of their relationship. Andy likes it but Matthew and Ryanne are fine to see it excised. The second deleted scene would've been the introduction to the Warriors Three – Volstagg, Fandral and Hogun the Grim – as well as Lady Sif. Considering they get no prominent introduction at the coronation, Andy feels this would've helped give us a sense of their importance in the story and Thor's life. The third deleted scene would've been a moment between Thor and his mother Frigga. It's short but sweet. And Rene Russo looks incredible in the costume. Meanwhile, back at the coronation where Thor's waving Mjolnir around... Thor's a boastful braggart who knows how to work the crowd – and us. Chris Hemsworth is a pure delight in this role and does the himbo oh so well. He tosses Mjolnir in the air and wins everyone over with ease. But what's with that guy in the crowd who is so excited to see Thor? Was he directed to act that big or is it just him being genuinely excited? We see Lady Sif and Frigga react to Thor's antics. Again, it would've been great to have the context of them from the deleted scenes before seeing this. Lady Sif has more of a story in the myths, including being Thor's wife. She has some origins in Beowulf as well. Where's her golden hair? Through all of this, Odin remains completely stone-faced. And we do the IMDb game for Chris Hemsworth and Jaimie Alexander. We forgot Rene Russo but will get to her next time. We promise! It's a minute full of content with three deleted scenes, so there's a lot to cover. Tune in! The perfect casting of Mahershala Ali as Blade also unfortunately further drove the false narrative online, with people claiming that it meant the shows were “confirmed” non-canon due to Ali already having an MCU role as Cottonmouth. While this was an Internet overreaction given there are other examples of dual casting, the dual casting quirk not being acknowledged felt concerning. It admittedly did not help that Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 6 set itself a year after Avengers: Infinity War and Marvel's Runaways: Season 3 took its timeline through to post-Avengers: Infinity War 2018 dates, yet unfortunately neither referenced the Snap. A 2019 quote from Mr. Feige, which fairly described the Disney+ shows as the first time TV would truly connect back and forth with the films, was falsely run by sites as “confirmation” that the other shows were not part of the MCU. This quote has been weaponised and referenced ad nauseum for 2 years. The Darkhold would appear in WandaVision with no link to Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D./Marvel's Runaways The fan reaction to the Darkhold and Mobius scenes has also led to upsetting incidents where creators such as Jac Schaeffer and Michael Waldron are asked questions they are seemingly, understandably, not informed to answer, giving confused and accidentally damaging quotes. Cannon Impact: There are other great Marvel shows, e.g. Legion, but these have nowhere near the power or lasting impact in my heart simply by virtue of not being part of this world. The MCU family is such a wonderful thing, but right now, Television-inclusive fans don't feel like we're welcome in that family anymore. Mooted “Possibilities” If the Inhuman Royal Family needed to be rebooted within the MCU… it would not be the worst thing imaginable. The idea of being an extricable part of the MCU does not apply to Marvel's Iron Fist There is precedent with Star Wars for wiping canon, but there it was motivated by a need to free the storytelling. The Marvel Television MCU shows are not particularly restrictive. Most things can be picked up on fairly easily, perhaps at most needing a couple of throwaway setup lines. Alternate Universe: The shows aren't novelty What If…? type stories, e.g. “What If… Phil Coulson Were Resurrected?”, made to be a separate little alternate story – but born and bred as parts of building, developing, growing, interweaving the beautiful main MCU world and timeline. Some Hopes Recently, Mr. Feige made the comment, “Everything is on the board. That's one of the fun things about the comics is that characters would appear and disappear and come and go […] There are some great characters and actors from those shows.” This exciting quote bears similarity to previous remarks of Mr. Feige's, such as, “All of those things inhabit, however far on the outskirts, the same continuity, so certainly that opportunity [to integrate those characters] exists.” Eternals Earns PG-13 Rating https://www.filmratings.com/Search?filmTitle=eternals&x=0&y=0 https://www.cbr.com/marvel-eternals-rating-description/ FilmRatings.com's breakdown of the rating describes Eternals as including "fantasy violence and action, some language and brief sexuality." It's the latter element that has fans raising their eyebrows, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's movies having avoided sexual content since Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009. Unlike MCU movies past, romance is said to play a key role in the film's narrative. It even features a love triangle between on-again, off-again Eternal couple Ikaris (Richard Madden) and Sersi (Gemma Chan) and Dane Whitman (Kit Harington), the mortal human who's dating Sersi when the movie picks up in the present. The "brief sexuality" could also allude to a scene with Thena (Angelina Jolie), an Eternal warrior who becomes romantically involved with the Deviant Kro in Marvel's comics books. Perhaps tellingly, the final Eternals trailer shows Kro ensnaring Thena with his tendril-like appendages in an oddly intimate fashion, possibly alluding to the pair being in love. Even more intriguing, Eternals is confirmed to include an onscreen kiss between the Eternal Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) and his husband (Haaz Sleiman), which begs the question: will the movie be daring enough to feature a sexual moment involving a queer couple? It seems unlikely, given the MPAA's restrictive attitude towards LGBTQ+ content, but that won't stop fans from hoping anyway. As part of its preview of upcoming fall TV shows, Entertainment Weekly casually confirmed that Marvel's Hit-Monkey is not only a go but it's coming on Nov. 17 to Hulu. The long-in-development series has been relatively quiet since it was first announced as part of a suite of adult animated shows for Hulu, but fans can now expect it soon. Along with the release date, Hulu shared the first image from the show, featuring the titular assassin and his incorporeal sidekick. Check it out: Revenge can be sweet — and sometimes fuzzy. Based on the Marvel comic and created by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, this darkly comedic series follows a Japanese snow macaque whose clan meets a stranded hitman, Bryce (Jason Sudeikis), and nurses him back to health. But when Bryce bites the dust, it's up to the titular simian (guided by Bryce's ghost) to follow in his assassin footsteps and seek vengeance. "He's a character who is violent and temper amental but also deeply wounded and innocent," says Gordon. —Devan Coggan Hit-Monkey Trailer https://twitter.com/Marvel/status/1439952785953361927?s=20 Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D./Agent Carter Marvel One-Shot “Agent Carter” Becomes Easier To Find On Disney+ https://whatsondisneyplus.com/marvel-one-shot-agent-carter-becomes-easier-to-find-on-disney/ Following the release of the Marvel One-Shot “All Hail The King” on Disney+, Disney+ has made a little reshuffle and moved out the Agent Carter short into its own listing, having previously been found in the “Iron Man 3” extra section. In the short, we see British operative Peggy Carter joining the nascent S.H.I.E.L.D. organization. As she searches for the “Zodiac” key, Agent Carter also battles her misogynistic, bureaucratic boss, Agent Flynn. It takes place after the main events of Captain America: The First Avenger. The short was originally released in 2013 and was released originally on the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray/DVD. It stars Hayley Atwell, Bradley Whitford, Dominic Cooper, Shane Black, Neal McDonough, and Tim Trobec. Currently, the short has only been moved into its own listing in some countries, including the US, Canada and Australia. Moving the short out from the extras section makes sense for multiple reasons, mainly to make it easier for people to find it. While adding extra content like deleted scenes or behind-the-scenes footage makes more sense to include in that section. Bonus features that don't have any real connection bar a home media physical release, are much more useful listed separately. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Chloe Bennet shuts down rumors about her reprising her role as Quake for Marvel's Secret Invasion series on Disney+. https://www.instagram.com/chloebennet/ https://www.cbr.com/secret-invasion-chloe-bennet-debunks-quake-rumors/ Bennet commented on the persistent rumors during a recent Instagram story, noting, "I have avoided saying anything like this in general, on social media or whatever, because I thought maybe it would blow over, but it has not. I am in no way attached or involved, even at all or a little bit, in the Secret Invasion Marvel thing. I honestly don't even know really what that is... I am only coming on here to say this because it has gotten to the point that every day I'm getting hundreds of messages about this... I'm now getting like approached in person. Today it was in the tampon aisle at Target... So I figured I would just clear the air." Welcome to the place where I get to let my geek flag fly and talk about all things geek. Basically a fuzzy guide to life, the universe, and everything but mostly geek stuff. This is where I look into the world of geekdom and some geek news, comics, The Simpsons, Star Wars, and whatever randomness finds its way onto the recording. Over four episodes, Danny the Deuce and Blue have joined me to discuss representation and diversity in superheroes. Adding to our discussions of 77 heroes representing diversity in comics, we're back with 17 more. This edition of the diversiverse goodness includes the following heroes: Apache Chief, Damien Wayne, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, Hogun the Grim, Lunella Lafayette (Moon Girl), Nico Minoru (Runaways), Daisy Johnson (Quake), Koi Boi (Ken Shiga), The Black Racer, Namor, Maya Lopez (Echo), Shatterstar, Glenn Rhee, Komodo, The Prowler, Riri Williams (Ironheart), and more!
