Have you ever heard of SIFY? No, not Lady Sif and the warriors three from the Thor movies, but Shots Inside Fifty Yards. This has been a metric I've been following closer and closer so I can determine what is really holding back my score. Most people will average a little more than 36 putts per round and (especially weekend golfers) will probably miss 16/18 greens in regulation. If we're really being honest with ourselves we can probably say of those 16 greens we miss, we will also duff or skull a couple of those and wind up with multiple chips on one hole. My point being, if you track this and see a number around 60, don't be afraid, let's just dive deeper into the what caused it!If you want even more detailed stats, look at how long your first putt is after a SIFY shot. That will tell you if your chipping or putting is in more urgent need of attention. At the beginning I would suggest just looking at whether or not you ended up inside or outside of 20 feet. If you can consistently land inside 20 feet from your chips, you are doing better than the average weekend golfer and should be more focused on your putting. Obviously, if that's not the case then you need to spend more time chipping. If you want some help with either of these you can sign up for our 5 strokes in 5 days challenge, which will walk you through 5 different practice routines that will drastically help your SIFY metrics! Minute Forty: From Talk of Treason to Talk of Heritage Joining us sadly for the last time this week is Jessica Plummer, author and contributing editor at Book Riot, as we discuss treason with the Warriors Three and Lady Sif as well as Loki's slowly growing need to know what's going on with his tranformations. In the Fortieth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... We complain about the fact that we have so few great moments like this with the Warriors Three. Jessica gives us some history on the Warriors Three and Jack Kirby's character types, showing how these largely pull from a set of archetypes he used often. Did Josh Lucas want more comedy and didn't get it so didn't come back, or could he see where the treatment of Fandral and the Warriors Three was headed when he opted to not return? It speaks to what Marvel's done with characters and actors now that they largely don't want to drop out because a small role can become so much more. There's even more of Fandral, Volstagg, Hogun and Sif in the script here and it's great material, but in context of the film, it's not necessary. Still, it speaks to how great they could have been as characters if they weren't used strictly as jokes so often. Could it be that they're also upset because they know Loki is now lined up to be king? Fandral seems to realize the line between mischief and treason. Was Loki meaning to be treasonous and committing a coup d'état? Loki approaches the Casket of Ancient Winters to find out the truth. Hiddleston is terrific in this moment as he debates whether to pick the Casket up or not. It seems clear to us that he knows the truth but does this to confirm what he knows. It's almost like Odin is drawn here at this moment as well. It's clear that it's too late for Odin to tell Loki the truth here, though perhaps it would've been a better option to have been cursed and not to have been stolen after the Battle against the Jotuns. We debate the spell on Loki and how it reveals his frost giant heritage but doesn't change his size. Odin's “Stop!” was scripted as stopping the Destroyer from blasting the person picking up the Casket. We talk about how the delivery feels like there's an intensity behind it so we debate if Hopkins thought he was acting against Hiddleston here or the Destroyer. But how does the Destroyer know when the wrong person is touching the Casket? Unrelated, Odin's outfit is so beautiful and it's finally not armor! And what about those marks on frost giant Loki? When we say baby Loki, we'll have to compare markings. Last but not least, we complain some more about the blue nature of both the Casket and the Tesseract, particularly how they came out in such close proximity. From treason talk with Thor's friends to frost giant heritage arguing between Loki and Odin, we have a lot to discuss with Jessica. Tune in! Minute Twenty-Five: From Screaming Volstagg to Collapsing Utgard This week, we're joined by Cass Fredrickson from Lord of the Rings Minute at Dueling Genre Productions. We've got Mjølnir bringing the lightning, a collapsing city, and a run from a Jotun Beast to chat about and Cass is with us every step of the way! In the twenty-fifth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Volstagg's scream sure would've sent us running too, but then so would a giant Jotun Beast appearing from an ice shell directly behind us. How the hell do they always stay so far ahead of it? It's perpetually catching up to them as they race toward the Bifrost point. Where are they running to? The Bifrost landing point? Didn't Heimdall say Bifrost will remain closed if there's the chance they'd bring something back that could threaten Asgard? Wouldn't a charging Jotun Beast count? So are they... just running? Speaking of the Bifrost landing point, why does Heimdall have to pick them up at that one particular spot? Couldn't he get them from anywhere? This really makes no sense. Thor keeps the Frost Giants busy and presumably Laufey is seeing what Thor can do. Not quite lightning... but we're moments away. Why do they keep running straight at him? His Mjølnir spins are flicking ice shards at them and keeping them at bay, but is this for the benefit of his friends? The Frost Giants seem to be nothing more than lemmings. Just bring the lightning already! Is this Laufey's plan? To keep Thor separated from his group? There are, in fact, lots of Frost Giants running after them as well as the Jotun Beast. Is he hoping to capture everyone or is he trying to kill them all before Odin shows up? Or maybe Laufey wants to know what Thor can do and is testing his limits. Meanwhile, Loki, the Warriors Three, and Lady Sif continue their run from the Jotun Beast and the Jotuns. Now that he's injured, Fandral becomes our eyes as we see his POV over Volstagg's shoulder, watching the Jotun Beast grow closer over and over again. Sif manages to avoid getting hit. Hogun does as well. Seriously, how do they run so fast? Josh Dallas as Fandral works really well. We speculate why perhaps Dallas opted to stick with his TV show instead of returning for the sequels. Considering how the Warriors Three are treated, it makes sense. We get to see Mjølnir's power to bring the lightning down finally. This is such an iconic part of Thor and this film. It's so smart of them to hold it back until minute 25. It's neat to see that Thor actually strikes the ground with the end of the handle, not the head of the hammer, to control the lightning. The CG here holds up surprisingly well. The damage caused by Thor's lightning, however, might call into question just how much Thor can control the damage it would cause. To that end, we know Thor didn't realize Jotunheim was in such bad shape. But is he able to control this at all to make sure he doesn't destroy the entire planet? It's really Thor's dumb luck everything works. So many Frost Giants fall to their supposed deaths here because of Thor's actions. More of the planet falls to pieces. Even one of the towers of Utgardhall collapses. It's sad to lose Cass this week because we had great conversations with her about the Battle on Jotunheim, but we're glad to know she'll be back later this season for more conversation. Tune in! Minute Nineteen: From Outskirts to In Town It's a special week indeed with not one but two guests joining us as we take the long walk into downtown Utgard – Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell from the Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast. In the nineteenth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Hogun the Grim is, well, grim about their situation. Quite honestly, however, this plays much better than how it was originally scripted. It gives us more interaction between the Warriors Three, Lady Sif, and Thor, but at the expense of the darker mood. That may speak, however, to the feel that we get from this group feeling very much like a group of college friends heading out to cause some trouble. The walk through the town of Utgard is full of blue and gray bleakness. We know Jotunheim is largely ice, but it's dark and bleak and makes it hard to see things a bit. For instance, we only just realize that these tall structures which have the vibe of a cave's stalactites and stalagmites are actually ruins of buildings in what we feel are the outskirts of this Jotun city. Speaking of Jotun cities, this is never identified but the comics identify the primary Jotun city which is named Utgard. Laufey's tower from where he rules is called Utgardhall. Again, it's never confirmed but we're going to go with it. Speaking of Jotuns, which are of course the frost giants, Jotunheim actually was the home of all giants in Norse mythology, not just frost giants. That seems to be something Marvel decided for its universe. Thor, Sif, Loki, Fandral, Volstagg, and Hogun, still walking in their same formation, travel through many beautiful shots of crumbling desolation. Again, when the Casket of Ancient Winters left the planet, Jotunheim started falling apart. That's likely why Utgard looks so rough and unrecognizable from what we saw in Odin's flashback. Utgard and Jotunheim are falling apart. To that end, why would Laufey make such a terrible deal for himself and his people? The minute ends with the group of Asgardians coming closer to Utgardhall at the center of Utgard. (See? We said we were going it it and we are.) At the last moment, we see Jotunheim's sun shining from behind Utgardhall's towers. That surprises us because we thought it was night all this time. Turns out, it's just a cold sun that gives no heat. It's a minute through which we journey but likely a much longer walk for our warriors across Jotunheim. Still, so much to discuss. Tune in! Minute Fourteen: From Manipulation to Madness Ashley Coffin from the MCU Podcast is joining us this week as the Warriors Three and Lady Sif join Thor and Loki. Check her and her shows out at the links below! In the fourteenth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Loki sits and listens to Thor. Eventually, he finally speaks. He tells Thor he's right and that Daddy's wrong. He's also concerned the frost giants might be coming through with an army soon. That leads to Thor getting riled up. Now, he is ready to ride to Jotunheim. That's when Loki tries to make it clear that he didn't want this, but we really know he did. Damn, he's good. And how many times has Loki sat through Thor's tantrums? But is it weird Thor calls his coronation day his ‘day of triumph'? Like it's some victory to be won? Forget about all that! It's the Warriors Three and Lady Sif! So the Warriors Three arrive with Lady Sif. They seem surprised by the upset table, Volstagg in particular. And this is the same entrance we saw in the extended scene last minute. So why does Volstagg have to be played for the jolly fat man jokes? We get it – it's in the comics. We just don't like it. Perhaps that's why they were all thinned out so much. They're not that great. Because of their arrival, Loki gets conspiratorial with Thor. Sif watches with suspicion. Outside of that, have we mentioned how much we love the production design? Apparently, the Warriors Three and Sif can't really hear what's being said. They all just watch like creepers. In fact, it's not until Loki says "It's madness" that it piques Volstagg's curiosity: “What sort of madness?” And that's when Thor reveals they're going to Jotunheim. Wait... Fandral is here? We almost forgot he was one of the Warriors Three. Fandral says it's serious – it's not just a fun trip to Earth to hang out with the mortals. But is it weird that he calls it Earth, not Midgard? And that he refers to them as mortals? Or is this just the filmmakers speaking down to their audience? But really, it's great seeing Fandral and the rest pipe up. Without the deleted and extended scenes, however, this is really the first time we see these three interacting at all with Thor, other than his nod to them at the coronation. How are we meant to know they're prominent characters? Isn't it odd that this is essentially how we meet them? The extended scene gives us more of the Warriors Three and Sif trying to convince Thor it's a bad idea. Again, do we need more of them? We love Loki and his manipulation, and this is a good minute for it. We have a great time covering all of these elements and more. Tune in! Minute Thirteen: From a Broken Truce to a Creeping Brother Ashley Coffin from the MCU Podcast is joining us this week to talk war with Jotunheim. Check her and her shows out at the links below! In the thirteenth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Thor complains about Laufey breaking the truce and he wants war. Odin believes the guilty party – these three frost giants – paid for their actions with their lives. So who's right? Should they be more concerned about an impending attack by the frost giants? Does diplomacy work using the gentler approach? And will Odin call Laufey on the red phone to chat with him about this? But Anthony Hopkins plays Odin so perfectly here with such calm. It's only when Thor pushes too far that Odin raises his voice, and it's one of the best moments in the movie. Meanwhile, Loki just watches. It's such an interesting portrayal that Tom Hiddleston does here. What's he thinking? Was he assuming the Destroyer would kill the frost giants? And was this all a big ruse just to get Thor to go to Jotunheim? Regardless, he's such a fascinating character. Easy to love, and dead sexy. Thor pouts about not getting to invade Jotunheim. Because he didn't get what he wanted, Thor has a tantrum by flipping a table. We're glad they didn't use the extended scene because it shows how awful Thor is to the wait staff here in Valaskjalf. He really is a spoiled prince. Probably doesn't tip either. But what's with all the pumpkins on the tables? And did you notice the golden apples of Idunn? Loki sneaks in, just like frost giants from Jotunheim sneaking into Odin's vault. As that's happening, Loki arrives, but in the extended scene, we see the Warriors Three and Lady Sif get there first. Volstagg's concerned about the destroyed food from Thor's tantrum. Sheesh. We debate if the movie would benefit with more of the Warriors Three or less. So when Loki arrives, it's from behind a pillar. He had to have been watching Thor have his tantrum, and how he's creeping in to weave his web. It's pretty brilliant. Odin kills it in this scene, Loki hasn't said a word yet which works for his character really well, and Thor just wants war with Jotunheim. So typical. We have a great time covering all of these elements and more. Tune in! Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on TruStory FM's Discord channel! Minute Eight: From Rival Brothers to Regal Parents We have our first guest! We're joined by Ryanne Bennett from the Black Girl Nerds podcast this week, swinging Mjolnir around because she's clearly worthy. Check her and her shows out at the links below! In the eighth minute of Kenneth Branagh's 2011 film Thor... Odin lays out to young Thor and Loki that a good king can't be war hungry but has to be ready for it. The boys both say they're ready to lead, and this is where we start questioning Odin's parenting. He says only one of them can become king, but that they were both born for it. Is he pushing for sibling rivalry? Then again, maybe it's just his way of hinting to Loki that he's actually the son of a different king...? Meanwhile, Mjolnir makes its first appearance. We talk a bit about how it was forged and debate when it became something that only someone worthy could pick up and wield. But why is Mjolnir in Odin's vault? Is he just holding it for Thor until he's big enough? Is he afraid someone else could wield it and cause Ragnarok? Now that story time is done, let's return to the present with Thor waving Mjolnir around. It's Thor's coronation. Or is it? Was Odin actually about to crown Thor or was he just making the official announcement that Thor is his heir for when he dies? Before we jump into that, however, we have not one, not two, but THREE deleted scenes to discuss. The first involves Thor and Loki. This would've been where we first meet Thor. Does it work better? It's fun seeing him drinking, throwing his goblet into the fire and shouting “Another!” but those eyebrows are offputting... This also would've been where we first meet Loki. It's a great reveal of him in his magnificently designed (cow) helmet and outfit. We also get a conversation between the brothers that gives us a better sense of their relationship. Andy likes it but Matthew and Ryanne are fine to see it excised. The second deleted scene would've been the introduction to the Warriors Three – Volstagg, Fandral and Hogun the Grim – as well as Lady Sif. Considering they get no prominent introduction at the coronation, Andy feels this would've helped give us a sense of their importance in the story and Thor's life. The third deleted scene would've been a moment between Thor and his mother Frigga. It's short but sweet. And Rene Russo looks incredible in the costume. Meanwhile, back at the coronation where Thor's waving Mjolnir around... Thor's a boastful braggart who knows how to work the crowd – and us. Chris Hemsworth is a pure delight in this role and does the himbo oh so well. He tosses Mjolnir in the air and wins everyone over with ease. But what's with that guy in the crowd who is so excited to see Thor? Was he directed to act that big or is it just him being genuinely excited? We see Lady Sif and Frigga react to Thor's antics. Again, it would've been great to have the context of them from the deleted scenes before seeing this. Lady Sif has more of a story in the myths, including being Thor's wife. She has some origins in Beowulf as well. Where's her golden hair? Through all of this, Odin remains completely stone-faced. And we do the IMDb game for Chris Hemsworth and Jaimie Alexander. We forgot Rene Russo but will get to her next time. We promise! It's a minute full of content with three deleted scenes, so there's a lot to cover. Tune in! We're casting off Thor's shadow this week as we chat with Daniel Warren Johnson about Beta Ray Bill, the five-issue mini-series from Marvel Comics that reaches its epic conclusion this Wednesday. As is already well documented on this podcast, we're obsessive maniacs regarding Johnson's comics. We think Beta Ray Bill might be his finest achievement yet, which is crazy to say considering the obvious genius that is Murder Falcon and Wonder Woman: Dead Earth. We asked Johnson to help us wade through Beta Ray Bill's tormented psychology for this week's Creator Corner conversation. The cartoonist happily obliged us as we rooted around Bill's deep-seated frustrations and complicated relationship with Lady Sif and Asgard. You might be surprised by what we uncover. Issues discussed this week: Beta Ray Bill 1 - 4 (we're still waiting on 5), written and illustrated by Johnson, colored by Mike Spicer, and lettered by Johnson and VC's Joe Sabino. 0:22 Woo S! KimLet's say for argument sake: "X-MEN: Dark Phoenix" wasn't coming out so soon after Disney's purchase of FOX, do you believe Kevin Feige would have still waited however long he is waiting to debut the X-MEN in the MCU, why or why not?2:00 Woo S! KimSince Captain Rogers is not technically dead, he now is just showing how old he actually is, do you think Chris Evans would ever come back in a mentor role for Spider-Man and or the other New Avengers whoever they may be?2:51 Woo S! KimI have heard this rumor on the internet most notably on Nerdist that unlike in the comics Shang-Chi's father is not going to be foomanchew, but the real Mandarin, what are your thoughts on the potential of this Sean, would you like this choice why or why not?5:00 Orion ZangaraHey Sean!! Do you think we'll ever get to a point where Marvel Television or Marvel Studios will create straight live action adaptations of famous Marvel comic book runs? For instance, I would love to see a Grant Morrison New X-Men or Joss Whedon Astonishing X-Men live action television series. DC comics/WB sometimes makes adaptations of comic book series with their animated features but it would be interesting if Marvel would not only do this with animated features but with live action features as well. Marvel Television and Marvel Studios obviously have been heavily influenced by the comics but are quite different in many ways. What are your thoughts about this? As always, you guys rock!! Thanks again for being so awesome! 8:23 Jim ScroggsDo we think Eitri got the use of his hands back at the end of Endgame?9:30 Alex WardHi Sean! I'm finally caught up on Marvel Studios News and want to thank you again for producing such quality content on such an unbelievably consistent basis. I've also been loving Fandalorians and am so glad those episodes have been pouring in lately!1) First, I want to say this question is not intended to take away from the epic scope of Endgame. But I wanted to ask -- after seeing Endgame, can you more easily see how Marvel Studios could up the ante for future "phase culminations"? For example, the final battle with Thanos could not have been more intense, fun, and engaging, but I could somehow see how Marvel could up themselves. For example, a cosmic-level battle with multiple recognizable villains, such as Doctor Doom and Galactus, while heroes fight multiple fronts on land, sea, and air. 15:37 Alex Ward2) Also, do you think Marvel purposely manages "scale" in order to leave room to top themselves each time, or is that just an absolutely ridiculous notion?16:41 Alex Ward3) Do you think any efforts will be made in future Captain Marvel films to strengthen her ties to Earth? My only qualm with her character is that she seems somewhat distant from this world, which is fine, but I feel like that would keep her from ever becoming a dependable, available member of the Avengers. Then again, we've only seen the very beginning of her arc.20:45 Alex Ward4) After seeing Endgame, have your theories changed at all as to how Carol has maintained her youth?21:45 MayaHi Sean! After seeing mural of Iron Man in the Far From Home trailer, it made me think about how Iron Man's legacy and heroism will be realized across the galaxy. It's expected that Earth will honor him, but do you think we will see any recognition and honor of Iron Man's sacrifice on other planets in coming films? Especially with so many people from other galaxies joining in the final battle, I love the idea of there being various memorials commemorating him within the galaxy.23:46 Michael WeaselboyHey Sean I was just wondering, do you wish we could have seen Nick Fury interact with the original six one final time??25:55 Giuseppe VicarettiHey Sean, my question for you this weekend is, if you were to choose One MCU movie to watch for the rest of you life which one would it be? Mine is Civil War.27:25 Mookie JohnsonDo you think that there is still room for Lady Sif in the MCU if shooting schedules can be worked out?28:24 Mookie JohnsonIf Marvel had gotten full control of Spider-Man before shooting Infinity war, what movie do you think would have followed Endgame first? I figure it would have been a franchise that didn't feature a dusted character. So would it have been Eternals?33:04 Mookie JohnsonSince the Time Stone was glowing in Infinity War when Dr. Strange gives it to Thanos, might he have been somehow orchestrating with Wong in the future the logistics of when and where to have sorcerers in preparation for the final battle?35:16 David RosenHey Everyone, Hope all is well and everyone had a great week! I believe after Infinity War, it was confirmed by someone from the movie (either one of the Russos, or Markus and/or McFeely) that Gamora was in the Soul World, implying that while she is dead on earth, she “is” somewhere, and ipso facto, it would also mean that Natasha “is” somewhere as well. If this is the case, how would you feel about a “dead” Natasha narrating her movie from the Soul World? Even if we only hear and don't see her, I feel like this could be an interesting way to incorporate a “present” Natasha, so even if it does take place in her past, we would still get her current reflection of her past experiences. Do you think this would help with the idea (not that I agree with it) that getting people to care about the Black Widow movie will be difficult because she's dead? Thoughts?42:51 David RosenAlso, on the subject of Vormir, do you think it's possible that the giant cloud and beam of light that appears in the sky when someone sacrifices themselves (or in Gamora's case, gets sacrificed by someone else) is actually a portal to the soul world? Perhaps when someone dies, it triggers that beam which actually sucks up the body and sends down the soul stone. Do you have any ideas on how that whole exchange actually takes place? What do you think is up in those clouds and/or happening with that beam of light? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
