To see art the way that we see it, it has to get through time. people who happen to have done art in the past wanted to leave a mark on generations in the future. In Art, people can express themselves and let their ideas flow. contemplating art and the role of an artist, drawing is often one of the first mediums that come to mind. It is a powerful artistic tool for bringing ideas to life and transforming them into valuable works. Drawing has been an integral form of artistic expression since the dawn of civilization, continuously evolving in style and mediums across centuries. It is a versatile medium that transcends age and skill level, enjoyed by artists and non-artists. Drawing, in many ways, defines our humanity. It allows us to externalize our thoughts, giving them tangible form on paper or other surfaces. Through drawing, we are able to convey our deepest emotions, capturing moments and sharing narratives in ways that words alone often struggle to do justice. Through intricate details, bold lines, or subtle shading, drawing provides a means to communicate and connect with others, transcending language and cultural barriers. It is a medium that celebrates individual creativity, allowing each artist to leave their unique mark on the world.

Can our digitally mediated environment be spiritual? Nick Ripatrazone takes us through the lens of the Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan, focusing on his not well-known Catholic faith. McLuhan himself describes his testimony into the Church as, "I came in on my knees. That is the only way in." We discuss the topics around inter-textuality, the complexity of life, on form/function within mediums like poetry, concept/percept, ambiguity and paradox, and McLuhan's famous phrase "the medium is the message". Faced with waning state support, declining revenue, and forced entrepreneurialism, museums have become a threatened public space. Simultaneously, they have assumed the role of institutional arbiter in issues of social justice and accountability. The canon of Institutional Critique has responded to the social embeddedness of art institutions by looking at the inner workings of such organisations and has found them wanting. In After Institutions, Karen Archey expands the definition of Institutional Critique to develop a broader understanding of contemporary art's sociopolitical entanglements, looking beyond what cultural institutions were to what they are and what they might become. Karen Archey speaks to Pierre d'Alancaisez about the histories and futures of Institutional Critique, the museum's neoliberal catch-22, and about an exhibition that didn't happen. Karen Archey is Curator of Contemporary Art at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Formerly based in Berlin and New York, she worked earlier as an independent curator, editor, and art critic, writing for publications such as Artforum and frieze. This episode is all about the Element of Art: Line. In Art, we consider a mark with length and direction to be a line. Lines can be long or short, they can be straight, wavy, zig-zag, jagged, thick, or thin. Lines can be solid or dotted; we might even talk about a line that is not physically present in the work but merely suggested by other elements we see. If you enjoy the podcast, please follow and rate it on Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. This is Part II of a 2 part series celebrating and looking closely at the Fischer family musical legacy to our times and the world.Grammy-winning producer, composer, arranger Brent Fischer carries on the legacy of his legendary father, Dr. Clare Fischer. Brent's arranging credits appear on over 30 million albums to include: Usher, Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello & The Roots, and D'Angelo (who won Grammy Album and Song of The Year for "Really Love" from his album "Black Messiah" where Brent Fischer is credited as arranger and producer). Brent produced the last eight Clare Fischer albums, including: Grammy-nominated 2011 release ‘Continuum', 2012 Grammy-winning '¡Ritmo!' (Best Latin Jazz Album) and 2013 Grammy-winning ‘Music for Strings, Percussion and the Rest' (Best Instrumental Composition). The Clare Fischer Music Library is really about the melody between father and sons, one generation and the next. There is something otherworldly about those connections that bond, bind and mesmerize. Legacy is alive and the inspiration that Brent takes from his father who was influenced by Latin greats and worked directly with Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington, is passed down to countless others who experience their greatness. We all have a rich legacy. Tori recognizes the universality of legacy in her own special story. This episode debuts two new segments to the show - an opening monologue with some behind the scenes banter and "Gimme a Minute" at the show's conclusion, a freewheeling riff of some of Tori's off the cuff thoughts. "Here's to Life" welcomes again the brilliant, rich, and passionate symphonic talent, Brent Fischer. "His greatest gift to me was his collection of his handwritten scores. And his music lives on in everything that I do; and I mean that sincerely.” - Brent Fischer (on his father)This week on Here's To Life:• What is Legacy and why does it matter? • In Art... is perfection necessary? For this week's Fun Fact Friday, I wanted to share a little bit about the Primary Colors. In Art class, we are traditionally taught that all the colors we see are a combination of just red, yellow and blue. This is true to some extent, but teaching that there are just three primary colors and that you can make any color you want using red, yellow and blue gives people an incomplete picture. The fact is there are actually different sets of primary colors depending on what colored medium one is working with. Also, if we are being technically accurate, whether using additive or subtractive color the optimal primaries are not red, yellow and blue. Episode 5: Religion and Psychology. A conversation with Pittman McGehee In today's episode, Pittman unpacks the definition of religion and broadens the traditional limiting assumptions many immediately experience in relationship to religion. We discuss how many of the actions that have been in the name of religion are not religious. We begin by defining religion, the philosophy of materialism, psychological wholeness, good and evil, individuation, and the Self. Pittman discusses where religion goes wrong and how the human stewards of the various traditions affect the search for wholeness with human impulses, ideologies, and dominance. He defines spirituality as the deep human longing to transfer the transcendent into the immanent through experience and reflection upon it. We explore the profoundly powerful sacred aspects of human sexuality and the assault by the organize structures and the misinterpretation of each tradition that has been destructive of sexuality. Biography: Pittman became was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church in 1969, The Very Reverend J. A tapestry of uplifting stories in which fathers and sons share the game...Almost two hundred father-son pairs have played in the big leagues. Kevin Cook takes us inside the clubhouses, homes, and lives of many of the greats. In visiting these legendary families, Cook discovers that ball-playing families are a lot like our own. Dan Haren regrets the long road trips that keep him from his kids. Ike Davis and his father, a former Yankee, debate whether Ike should pitch or play first base. Buddy Bell leads a generation of big-leaguers determined to open their workplace -- the clubhouse -- to their kids.Framing The Dad Report is the story of Kevin Cook's own father, Art Cook, a minor-league pitcher, a loveable rogue with a wicked screwball. In Art's later years, Kevin phoned him almost every night to talk baseball. They called those nightly conversations “the Dad Report.” In time, Kevin came to see that these conversations were about much more than the game. That's what this book is about: the way fathers and sons talk baseball as a way of talking about everything -- courage, fear, fun, family, morality, and mortality. An award-winning sportswriter and former senior editor at Sports Illustrated, Kevin Cook is the author of Titanic Thompson, Tommy's Honor, and Kitty Genovese.Listen in to Kevin Cook's special Father’s Day week conversation in the Clubhouse...
Art and ethics are linked philosophically by the fact that they are both fall under value theory; and some aestheticians, notably Berys Gaut, have argued for a direct connection between aesthetic and moral values, in that the moral values that an artwork may embody can raise or lower its aesthetic value. In Art and Ethics in a Material World: Kant’s Pragmatist Legacy (Routledge 2013), Jennifer A. McMahon argues that aesthetic and moral judgments are intrinsically linked by the fact that they contain a common element of community-calibrated subjective responses, and that as a result by reflecting on art we also exercise this element of moral judgment. McMahon, who is associate professor in philosophy at the University of Adelaide, South Australia, draws on Kant, pragmatist philosophers such as John Dewey, contemporary philosophers of mind such as Susanna Siegel, and interviews with contemporary artists, including Olafur Eliasson and Doris Salcedo, to argue for and illustrate her view. The Progressive Conservative Party has been the governing party for more than four decades in Alberta for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that there has rarely been a viable alternative party with enough support to move from the Opposition to the Government benches. In almost every political system that employs a single member plurality electoral system the opposition parties merge into one party (or a coalition) to provide an alternative to the government. But in Canada we have done the opposite by creating multiple parties that do not cooperate during elections. So the rebirth of the Alberta Green Party is not a surprise but is it a good thing for democracy? The speaker will argue that the re-emergence of the Alberta Green Party is important to democracy for two reasons. She will argue that the most serious issues facing the Alberta economy are environmental and Alberta's economy will be devastated if we don't start moving quickly toward the new, smart, greener way of doing things. Secondly, she will argue that there is a deep political malaise in Alberta, as evidenced by low voter turnouts and deep cynicism about politics and politicians, that can only be corrected by doing politics differently, a main tenet of the Greens. Unlike traditional parties, the Greens put the public good ahead of advantage to the party itself, including electoral reform and cooperation with other parties. Speaker: Janet Keeping, Leader of the Green Party of Alberta Janet has a B. Sc. In Art and Design from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and both an M.A. and a law degree from the University of Calgary. After articling with the Calgary law firm Bennett Jones, Janet co-founded and became the first Executive Director of the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre. For twenty two years Janet did legal research and public legal education for the Canadian Institute of Resources Law at the University of Calgary. Since 2006 she has served as President of the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership.

Lesson 3: Audio Clean-Up.
This is Lesson One: GarageBand Loops and Podcasting for INART 258.
Assignment 1: Garageband Loops and Podcasting
I transcribed and arranged the song "Wind Garden" from Super Mario Galaxy for brass quintet. It plays in the "Gusty Garden Galaxy" level. Here's the original song I used to write my arrangement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z2kxFCQ_mQ The arrangement includes parts for 2 trumpets, a french horn, a trombone, and a tuba. I composed the ending (and threw in the Mario Galaxy main theme) since the original track plays on a loop and doesn't have an ending.
MIDI files project for INART 258. The song I used is "Love Theme" from the Gameboy Advance game "Mother 3." Here is the original MIDI file I used: http://mother3midi.webege.com/Mother%203%20-%20Love%20Theme.mid I edited the volume of all the tracks to create dynamics. Also, the instruments sound a lot different.

Today's podcast is a conversation with Dr. Karen Sherman on mindfulness and making choices in ones life. We discuss the reasons she wrote her new book called Mindfulness and the Art of Choice: Transform your Life. Dr. Sherman's book offers the reader the tools to stop living a life that is burdened by old, repetitive feelings and patterns that keep people stuck and unhappy.Dr. Karen Sherman, a NYS licensed psychologist, who has been in private practice for over 20 years on Long Island. In addition to her private practice, Dr. Sherman has been taking her skills to groups and organizations with her Art of choice workshops and seminars. In Art of Choice workshops and lectures, Dr. Sherman helps people examine how they make choices, what motivates those choices, and whether those motivating factors are really, what the people themselves want. She also examines the conditions under which people sometimes accidentally give up their ability or right to choose.Dr. Sherman is also an expert in relationship counseling and an author on the topic. Her book, Marriage Magic! Find It, Keep It, and Make It Last, co-authored with communications expert Dale Klein, is a compendium of wisdom about making marriages better.
