In celebration of National Volunteer Month, the community of Winchester is gearing up for a grand Volunteer Celebration Day on Friday, April 11th, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at the Our Health Campus. The event aims to honor the invaluable contributions of volunteers who continuously make impactful changes within the community. In a recent episode of 'The Valley Today,' host Janet Michael was joined by Sharen Gromling, Executive Director of Our Health; Kit Redmer, Communications Director for the City of Winchester; and Andy Gail, CEO of United Way Northern Shenandoah Valley, to discuss the importance of volunteerism and what attendees can expect at the celebration. The celebration will be teeming with activities embodying the community spirit. From 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, families can enjoy a range of activities including food, beverages, bounce houses, games, and face painting. Sharon expressed excitement about recognizing the volunteers' contributions, emphasizing, 'We can't do the work we do in our nonprofit organizations without their help.' The community is invited to participate in the festivities and say thank you to their local volunteers. Janet highlighted special appearances to be made during the event's program from 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM. Mayor Les Veach will be delivering a proclamation, echoing the volunteer week proclamation by former Mayor David Smith, and presenting the Golden Shovel and Silver Shovel Awards to outstanding volunteersm from the city's SnowBusters program. Andy touched upon the diversity in volunteering by mentioning projects from physical labor to administrative tasks, showing that there's a role for everyone. Highlighting Day of Caring, he hopes to inspire more community involvement. Emily Lopez Bonilla, a student from Handley and heavily involved in the Interact Club, will also be speaking about the impact of volunteering on the new generation. Sharen pointed out the role of the Volunteer Action Center that connects volunteers to nonprofit needs and mentioned the impressive valuation of volunteer hours. Winchester CCAP's Andrea Cosans will speak about the community refrigerator program, relocated just outside the Our Health office building, which is maintained by volunteers. The event underscores the symbiotic relationship between businesses and the community. Businesses involved in the discount card program are giving back to volunteers, recognizing their crucial role. Kit noted the enthusiasm of local businesses in supporting this initiative, despite economic challenges, highlighting their commitment to community service. The celebration is not just a recognition event but also an opportunity for community members to learn more about volunteering. Sharen noted, 'We will shamelessly be recruiting' new volunteers, with booths and sign-up forms available on-site. The conversation beautifully underscored how volunteerism is woven into the fabric of Winchester. With heartfelt gratitude towards volunteers and a shared enthusiasm for continued community support, the town is set to celebrate the spirit of giving. The program's spirit was best summed up by Sharen's words on mutual admiration and the deep appreciation for community efforts: 'We appreciate you.'

Nothing is more important to Albertans than our kids, but too many are struggling. Teachers and parents both know our schools don't have the support kids need. Alberta's per-student spending on education is the lowest in the country. Teachers are leaving the profession, kids are falling behind, and parents are worried. We can make things better, by investing in smaller classes, more support in classrooms, and manageable workloads to be able to recruit, retain, and respect professionals in public education. Speakers: Kevin McBeath, Danielle Gareau and Derek Resler. Kevin started teaching social studies at Winston Churchill High School in 2003, and has never stopped. Outside of the classroom he coaches basketball, coordinates the Interact Club at WCHS, and serves as the Political Engagement Officer for ATA Local 41. When he's not working, Kevin spends his time with his wife and four children. Danielle is a teacher at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute (LCI), where she teaches French immersion social studies, science, and legal studies. After graduating from Simon Fraser University, she began her teaching career in British Columbia before settling in Lethbridge seven years ago with her husband and children. In addition to her teaching role, Danielle runs the D&D club at LCI and serves as the Lethbridge ATA Local treasurer, where she also contributes to the political engagement, communications, and teacher welfare committees. Derek has been a teacher in the Lethbridge School Division for 25 years, teaching in several schools as both a classroom teacher and learning support teacher, and is currently teaching Shop at Wilson Middle School. As well, Derek has been the President of the ATA Local 41, Lethbridge Public Schools, for the past 10 years.

Cord Hamilton was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for his commitment and passion on and off the field and mat. The thing he loves most about sports is the team aspect and how close you can become as a family. During school, Cord is involved in football, wrestling, FFA, strength and conditioning, livestock judging, Interact Club, Student Council, International Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. To stay involved within his community, he is part of the Decatur County Achievers 4-H club and church youth group. He also participates in local and state livestock shows. Cord volunteers for many community activities including Meals for the Heartland and highway cleanups, and has helped organize the Top of the World Lamb Show as well as a Kids Day at the County Fair. Agriculture means a lot to Cord, as most of his life has been based around it. His whole family has grown up involved in agriculture and has taught him about hard work and responsibility. He raises show cattle and sheep and has shown pigs until this year. He was given the opportunity to show cattle and pigs all around the United States and plans to do the same with his sheep. Cord plans to go to a community college and study as an agriculture major. Rotarian Marissa Williams of the Stow-Munroe Falls (Ohio) Rotary Club, who visited RadioRotary via Zoom for this show, has a longer association with Rotary than her year and a half in her Rotary Club. It started when she was a freshman at Millbrook High School when she joined that school’s Interact Club (sponsored by Millbrook Rotary). During her four years of high school she continued to be active and was president of the club twice. As she approached graduation she was awarded the principal scholarship Millbrook Rotary offers. She continued a life of service in college as part of the Circle K service club, then spent two years in the Peace Corps before settling down in Akron, immediately joining the Rotary Club near her home. At 24, she became part of the future of Rotary. Warwick Valley, NY, has a very strong Rotary Club; like other Rotaries in District 7210 (the Mid-Hudson), it has found a creative way to raise money for good causes, locally or internationally. In this show, two Warwick Rotarians—retired Lt. Col. Edward Lynch and Dr. David Dempster—describe “Bowling for a Cause,” a fun fundraiser that they produce along with the Warwick Valley High School Interact Club. A small fee paid by each bowler provides all the necessities of the sport and also food and drink during the event. The Interact Club chose four causes to support, all dealing with suicide prevention or prevention and recovery from alcoholism or drug abuse. Suicide has been major problem for veterans, so two of the groups supported by the event are the American Legion and VFW. NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) has especially effective suicide-prevention programs, while ADAC, the alcoholism and drug abuse council of Orange County, is central to those issues in the county and in nearby Rockland County. “Bowling for a Cause” raises most of its money from community sponsors—a law firm, bank, insurance agent, real estate firm, and restaurant. It is interesting to know that neither Col. Lynch nor Dr. Dempster thought they would be eligible for Rotary because they incorrectly believed that Rotary was only for businessmen. As Rotarians they are glad to have a chance to improve their community. RadioRotary interviews Rhinebeck Interact’s Grace Steele and Morgan Rakow, two of the 23 participants in the 2015 edition of that Interact Club’s “Nicaragua Project.” Interact is the high-school service organization sponsored by Rotary. Each year members of the Rhinebeck Interact Club, some adults (mostly Rhinebeck Rotarians), and some college students travel to the León department of Nicaragua where they work for a week on building and improving schools in impoverished rural villages. Under the supervision of a local foreman, the students bend rebar, mix cement, lay bricks, paint, and perform other basic construction tasks. Local workers continue the process. This is the second school that Rhinebeck Interact students have help build. Listen to these two enthusiastic girls tell about their work and their other Nicaraguan adventures. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
Rhinebeck Rotarian David Ives is the Executive Director of the Albert Schweitzer Institute, but that is just the tip of the iceberg for Ives’ many activities promoting worldwide peace and health. When he was 16, Ives took a trip to Latin America, where he was devastated by the poverty he encountered, and Ives determined to devote his life to helping others. After a stint in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua, he mixed an academic career with work for nonprofits, including Rotary International. A polio victim himself, he has volunteered to administer vaccine in Africa. He has worked with Rotary to organized peace forums in ten countries around the world. From his Nicaragua connection, he helped start the major commitment that Rhinebeck’s Interact Club has made to schools, pure water, and other improvements in rural León Province. A truly remarkable Rotarian. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
Interact clubs are service organizations for teenagers (and sometimes younger students) sponsored by local Rotary clubs. The Interact Club of Pawling is sponsored by Pawling Rotary Club and the Pawling Recreation Department. Teens in the club enjoy volunteering to work on community and humanitarian projects, from fundraising to implementation. So say the two Pawling Interact Club members who were interviewed with their Advisor, Robyn Woolley, Assistant Recreation Director for the Town of Pawling and Advisor to the Pawling Interact Club. Unlike most Interact clubs, which are affiliated with a specific school, this Interact club is community-based and open to all teens (grades 5-12) in the Pawling area. The club meets after school. Its activities include a strong summer day camp program for ages 3-14 and representation of the club at Rotary International Day at the U.N. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
Rhinebeck’s Interact Club (high school Rotary) students who participated in the Nicaragua Project — Sarah Turpin, Sean Phelan, and Anna Katomski — discuss their humanitarian work in Nicaragua. The project took a year to plan and was implemented this summer, 2010, primarily by Rhinebeck Interact students who helped build a classroom, provided clothing and school supplies, brought clean water treatment, and established gardens in a Nicaraguan community in need. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
