Join Tamara for an interview with oil painter Darcy Melton, a local native who attended Savannah Arts Academy and then tried fashion school in NYC for a year, before returning to Savannah and the self-directed study of fine art. Her work focuses on portraits (she accepts commissions) and still lifes, and she has taught painting workshops at the Jepson Center and at Arts on the Coast in Richmond Hill. Darcy's mother-in-law is Melinda Borysevicz, a former local figurative oil painter who has moved to Italy, and through her Darcy's been able to gain Italian residency too. She now splits her time between Savannah - look for her in shows at Location Gallery, SLAM, and Isle of Hope Art Fair - and Padula, Italy!    Check out more of Darcy's work and follow her here: https://www.darcymeltonfineart.com/ https://www.instagram.com/darcymeltonfineart/ Topics in their chat include: How Darcy transitioned from watercolor painting to oil, and her advice that if you can work simply, with a limited palette and just one "solvent," moving from watercolor to oil painting is actually way less intimidating and complicated than people tend to think; once she started showing her work in person at a Sulfur Street Fair, and expanding to portrait work, both around 2021/2022, her career rapidly got a foothold; a large part of her art business recently is portrait commissions (she is open if you would like to book one!); juggling trying to learn Italian and/or Neapolitan, the dialect spoken in her town of Padula; and the 2 projects she shares with her husband Nathaniel Mellor - the "Only a Bag" podcast of Italian travel tips, news, and history tidbits, and their art & literary magazine "Pigeon Review," which they started during COVID and hope to reinstate in the near future. P.S. - at some point we could not remember what ASMR actually stands for and I promised to do research, so here it is! "ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) is a relaxing sensation triggered by specific sounds or visuals, often described as a 'tingling' feeling in the head or spine."  Tune in and get all the details!

Bill Padula, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical and Health Economics, and Dr. David Armstrong, professor of surgery and Neurological surgery, are both at the University of Southern California and are concerned about wound care and the impact of potential changes in Medicare reimbursement of skin substitutes. They discuss the importance of skin substitutes in chronic wound care and their effectiveness in reducing amputations and hospital readmissions. With current advancements in wound care,  there is an emphasis on the need for education and advocacy to ensure that Medicare understands the value of skin substitutes and their potential for improving patient outcomes. David explains, "The skin substitutes we are talking about have been really helpful over the past, maybe at least the last decade, maybe even the last two decades, and especially over the last few years. We've seen now in some studies from our group and others that we can not only reduce amputation, but we can also reduce hospital admission and emergency department admission for these patients. So it's a really exciting time. And so that's on the positive end. On the not so positive end is that there have been some changes, and I'm sure Dr. Padula can talk about this. That may limit our access to it as clinicians, which is concerning certainly for the patients that I'm having right across the hallway." Bill elaborates, "Up until recently, Medicare hasn't put a lot of governance on reimbursement for skin substitutes, and physicians have been using them autonomously with the patient to treat non-healing chronic wounds. We see from the data that these skin substitutes work best when applied on a patient every one to seven days in a wound clinic, like what David Armstrong runs here at the University of Southern California. Medicare wants to change the reimbursement pattern and reduce reimbursement so that it would be impossible to get reimbursed for more than ten applications of a skin substitute in twelve weeks. So, that reimbursement system makes it impossible for providers and patients to follow parameters for use and improve the likelihood of healing a chronic wound." #SkinSubstitute #Medicare #CMS #ChronicWounds  Keck School of Medicine at USC Download the transcript here

Nespresso's U.S. marketing strategy is about going beyond the coffee machine. "We, first and foremost, are a coffee brand," said Jessica Padula, Nespresso's vp of marketing. She joined the Modern Retail Podcast and spoke about the brand's growth plans in the U.S. Nespresso has had retail locations for years. But the brand -- best known for its pod-based coffee brewing system -- has always tinkered with the model, testing out new markets and concepts while sunsetting others. According to Padula, the focus of Nespresso's new retail projects is to showcase the brand's coffee prowess. "You want to go a level deeper," she said. For example, some locations have begun offering master classes to teach customers about the origin of some coffees. The hope is to make the coffee and its quality top of mind, according to Padula. "Sometimes, since the machine is what you lead with, that often gets in the way," she said. With this, Nespresso is testing out new types of retail concepts and looking into new locations. This includes updates to major markets. "Newness in New York is definitely coming," Padula said.

As CMS prepares to cut off coverage for advanced wound care products, providers worry about worsening outcomes

A pending decision on whether Medicare will cover skin substitute grafts could put effective wound care tools out of the reach of too many seniors, an expert in wound care and health economics is warning. Bill Padula, former president of the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel and an assistant professor with the Department of pharmaceutical and health economics at the school at the University of Southern California, notes the products in the crosshairs are used to treat DFUs and venous leg ulcers, both common in nursing homes patients. Medicare Administrative Contractors could remove dozens of options from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services coverage list. And without coverage, doctors likely won't have a full range of products to reach for — or the ability to offer them as frequently as needed. “Of course, that doesn't mean that it's impossible to get these skin substitutes to the patient, but they are expensive,” Padula says in this episode hosted by McKnight's Long-Term Care News Senior Editor Kimbelry Marselas. “If Medicare is not paying for it — and we all know the story of seniors on fixed incomes that most are unlikely to be able to afford the of-pocket payments for skin substitutes on their own — this could amount to thousands of dollars every visit.” As a health economist, Padula acknowledges CMS must monitor spending on evolving products to ensure appropriate use. But this is a coverage decision that could well deliver a literal lesson in an ounce of prevention being better than a pound of cure. Chronic wounds that don't heal, notes Padula and a wealth of other researchers, often lead to amputations and increased mortality. Listen in to learn more about the debate fueled by the MACs' decision and how providers still hope to shape the ultimate call.

This week on the Frontline Innovators we have Bill Padula, Executive VP of Strategic Consulting @ Evora IT Solutions.    Bill brings over two decades of experience and a wealth of knowledge varying from enterprise mobility, to consulting large-scale IT deployment initiatives. We're excited to dig into his knowledge!     Quote: "To me the biggest challenge facing the workforce is that the providers and the the implementers don't always fully appreciate or understand the environment that the frontline works in or the mentality of the worker. The frontline's focus is on installing equipment, repairing the broken machine, putting a pipe in the grounds, whatever it is they're wrench turning work. The mobile application that they use is just a tool that they have to have to do their job. But they don't really understand the technology behind it. They don't want to understand the technology. It's not that they can't, it's just their focus is on doing the job that they're going out to do and the app, device, and technology is really secondary."     Key Takeaways: ➖ A lot of the providers — big players just seem to not understand the frontline ➖ Don't just design a pretty app for an award - you have to make sure it's practical and functional ➖ The most distributed worker often represents the majority of your user population ➖ No user in the world wants to have to figure out five different ways to do something in a workflow ➖ It's always best when users can train on their device     LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/billpadula/ Company Website:  https://www.evorait.com/   Here's other ways you can listen: Amazon Music -  https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/2f4ecd92-6468-4769-b0bf-254e236510b7/FRONTLINE-INNOVATORS Apple Podcast -  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/frontline-innovators/id1572329402 Spotify -  https://open.spotify.com/show/29m3wnK8pbFjdSvJ9wjmyS Stitcher -  https://www.stitcher.com/show/frontline-innovators Google Play -  https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZnJvbnRsaW5laW5ub3ZhdG9ycy5jb20vZmVlZC54bWw Youtube - https://youtu.be/wzgovyDeXnU   Find more episodes of Frontline Innovators at https://www.frontlineinnovators.com

Jessica Padula graduated from Boston University and always knew she wanted to get into brand marketing. However, getting a foot in the door can be difficult, so she took the advertising route to get there. Jessica started her career at Grey Group in New York, where she worked with brands like Downy, Covergirl, and Pantene. By specializing in the emerging space of social media, she was able to move over to the client side in Colorado, first with WhiteWave Foods, and then with Famous Brands. Eventually, she returned to New York as the Integrated Marketing Manager with Swarovski, but soon realized she missed CPG and joined Nespresso as their Social Media Marketing Manager in 2016. In 2018, she was promoted to Director of Brand Communications, and in 2023, she was promoted again to Vice President of Marketing and Interim Vice President of Sustainability with over 7 years at Nespresso and a uniquely perfect combination of luxury, CPG, and F&B experience. In this episode, Alan and Jessica discuss how a big move at a young age helped break her out of her shell, why “every ‘yes' is a ‘no' to something else”, how gamers are breaking stereotypes, and what mass amounts of data with increased fragmentation mean for marketing in general. They also talk about her path to becoming VP of Marketing, her views on leadership as someone relatively new to the space, how Nespresso's product innovation and marketing strategy are influenced by the next generation of consumers, and the ways they are impacting the community as an at-home solution. As many leaders come to find, the higher you climb up the ladder, the further you get away from the work. To stay grounded, Jessica bases her leadership approach on empathy. This requires vulnerability and the whole team feels psychological safety and a sense of belonging. This sense of belonging, as well as social justice, inclusivity, and sustainability, are all important factors for Gen Z consumers Nespresso is now considering as they reevaluate their product development, marketing strategies, and experiences. The way Gen Z is introduced to and consumes coffee is largely out of home, all about iced beverages, and concerned with aesthetics and community. Fundamentally, coffee plays an important role in the lives of Nespresso's target consumers. It serves as a connection point, and that connection is part of why Jessica has stayed at the company so long. She is passionate about finding ways their brand can tap into that community experience with their at-home solutions through meaningful partnerships and an understanding of what is important to their consumers. In this episode, you'll learn:The importance of empathy-based leadership and psychological safetyWhat Gen Z cares about and how Nespresso is shifting to meet their needsAs an at-home solution, how can Nespresso tap into community connections?Key Highlights: [02:00] One degree from George Clooney[03:30] Started in social, now she's here.[06:30] Leadership based on empathy[09:30] For Gen Z, it's all about the iced coffee and social impact.[12:30] The insights around their customer base driving product innovation[15:45] Community connections as an at-home solution[18:05] Working with the Ali Forney Center[21:45] A big move at a young age changed everything.[24:20] “Every ‘yes' is a ‘no' to something else.”[25:20] The importance of data analytics and visualization[28:30] What are the gamers all about?[30:55] The threat of fragmentation in marketingLooking for more?Visit our website for links to resources mentioned in this episode and ways to connect with the guest! I have always wanted to do something that has a lasting impact on the youth of this nation. Today I am doing what I am meant to do, using my gifts and talents. -Stacy A. Padula Young Adult and children's book author Stacy A. Padula has written 13 books and every one of them has risen to #1 either as a New Release or Best Seller on Amazon since 2010. One of the most fascinating parts of this story is that even though Stacy started planting the seeds of her series Montgomery Lake High in middle school, she also had her sights set on being an architect and an interior designer. In fact, she was a Presidential Scholar at the world-renowned Wentworth Institute of Technology. Armed with a degree and a job in her chosen field, Stacy worked for 2 years at an architecture firm but found herself restless and unfulfilled. Deep down inside, a little voice kept calling her toward something else…a lifelong love of writing and working with youth. In this interview, Stacy shares her devotion to her Christian faith as the conduit for all of her life choices, explaining that the best advice she ever received was to read the Bible and she has done that, cover to cover. Says Stacy: “Learning how to see God at work in my life strengthened my faith, gave me courage, and guided my path. I would not be where I am today if it were not for my personal relationship with God.” Today, this exceptional woman is an award-winning author, educator, and founder of a publishing company named after her beloved dachshunds, Briley & Baxter www.brileybaxterbooks.com. Her acclaimed young adult book series Montgomery Lake High and Gripped focus on realistic stories about high school and college including substance abuse, peer pressure and bullying. Stacy's characters explore getting past the hard times with faith and redemption. She has partnered with NBA basketball coach Brett Gunning on an empowering children's book series called On The Right Path and her acclaimed Gripped series is being adapted for TV by an Emmy award-winning producer.
