In episode 261 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Jody Goldsworthy. Jody is the Founder and CEO of Jonathan's House Ministries, which serves as one of the only male domestic abuse shelters in Wales. Jonathan's House Ministries firmly believes in all men, and that all men deserve to be healed, restored and eventually fulfilled. Through building safe spaces and educating people on the effects of abuse, they believe they can change things for men who have been domestically abused across the UK. Jody founded it in 2023 and it became a C.I.C in March 2024. In Wales, Jody says there are approximately 850,000 men who have gone through present or historical domestic abuse. Jody is a survivor of domestic abuse himself and was abused for 10 years by his first wife. This abuse took the form of financial abuse, coercive control, physical abuse, psychological abuse and sexual abuse through being made-to-penetrate or how it should be defined, rape. Unfortunately, Jody's history of abuse didn't start there and he was physically and sexually abused by his father in childhood. He was 11 years old when he was first diagnosed with depression and he made three suicide attempts between the ages of 11-16 years old. He also began hearing voices and in 2010 was diagnosed with psychotic tendencies. After the domestic abuse and the breakdown of his marriage, he was put on three different types of medication and was on them for two years. In 2010, he reached breaking point with the domestic abuse and he made several more suicide attempts between 2010-2012. He also claims his wife deliberately left medication out around him when he was in a state of suicidality to tempt him into taking his own life. Thankfully, in 2013 he was able to escape this marriage and from 2013-2019, he began to rebuild his life. He had been banned from going to church by his wife, which she did as a way to isolate from his faith community. He first disclosed to a friend about his domestic abuse and the childhood sexual abuse in 2015, the latter of which was reported to the police by his friend. Thankfully, this story eventually has a positive ending. He has since remarried and has started Jonathan's House Ministries to channel that trauma into something positive to help men. In this episode, we discuss all of that abuse and the mental health impact it had on him, his story of recovery and the positive work that JHM does for men in Wales and his ambitions for it for the future. Cellist Ken James Kubota has shattered perceptions of the typical classical music career. While he is celebrated by The New York Times for "dynamic” and “polished” musicianship, most know Kubota as a YouTuber, social media personality, and for pioneering his unique style of strumming the cello like a guitar. As an artist, many know him as one-third of the band Empire Wild, a group now represented by the Concert Artists Guild after receiving their 2020 Ambassador Prize. On social media, his audience numbers in the tens of thousands and continues to rise—he was selected as an Educational Partner by social media platform TikTok, creating fun and instructional videos on playing the cello. Kubota continues to grow a following as the founder and producer of JHMJams, a biweekly video series of pop improvisations by classical and jazz musicians. Described in National Sawdust Log as an “online powerhouse” of classical music's online ecosystem, JHM has earned additional recognition from Glamour, The Violin Channel, The Strad, and Classic FM. The channel is known for enlisting a brand new ensemble of musicians for each video; its roster numbers 300 and counting. Also found on Instagram and Facebook, the series has amassed over 5 million views on YouTube since 2016. Mr. Kubota holds degrees from The Juilliard School (B.M., M.M.), and serves on faculty at the Peabody Preparatory under Johns Hopkins University, Suzuki Music Schools of Westport and Orange in Connecticut, and Lucy Moses School in NYC. Sadly, we lost John Marino this year on March 18, 2019. He was 84 years old. We had the opportunity to interview him for the Farrier Focus Podcast in June of 2018. Today, we are re-airing this podcast (June 19, 2018) to commemorate this great man.  In this episode, John shares his early experiences of how he became a farrier after getting out of the Air Force, his early studies at the University of Arizona's Farrier School (where he studied under Donald Canfield), how he opened Across the Anvil Farrier Supply (which he operated until he sold it in 1991). He also discusses his contributions to the anvil industry by introducing a line of farrier anvils with wider faces and turning cams and the impact those anvils have had throughout the industry. John also recounts numerous experiences with his Wednesday night forging classes at his shop and the farrier school he opened with Grant Moon in 1988 (Texas School of Farrier Science). John holds the Certified Master Farrier designation in the BWFA of which he is a charter member.   He also holds the Certified Journeyman Farrier designation in the AFA and the TPFA (Texas Professional Farrier's Association).  He served as Vice-President of the TPFA for 6 years.  He is an active lifetime member of all three organizations.  John shares his experiences of operating JHM Manufacturing and making 6 styles of anvils and anvil stands until April of 2005, when he sold the business to Anvil Brand Shoe Company. John has dedicated his life to improving and furthering the farrier industry through education and professionalism.  His influence has been far reaching and you'll hear his most memorable stories and experiences in this memorable episode. Whether it's a global disaster, a school shooting, our parents' divorce, or the death of a friend, there's nothing fun about tragedy. It can make us feel like we're walking around in total darkness-where nothing seems quite right and there are more questions than answers. What do we say? What do we do? What happens next? And, how long will it take before things go back to normal? At some point, we'll all find ourselves in or around a tragedy, but being there doesn't mean we have to stay there. There's a way through the darkness to the other side, to healing- and we'll get there by trusting the One who is leading us. Transition is upon us. Students are finishing their school year, heading in to summer. Here at Mariners in a couple weeks we will have Jump UP where students move on to the next grade through Mariners Kids, JHM and HSM. This month we are talking over transition. This week we talk about how to help students finish well.
