Welcome to the annual very best of the year episode!!  2024 was a massive year for our show full of huge growth in many areas and it's always humbling to look back on what was achieved and of course reminisce on the biggest moments from the year of the show.  As always, we split this episode into four main categories which are the most shocking, funniest, insightful and best of uncut. And trust us, it is so hard to choose which moments go in where and more importantly, the incredible moments that miss out!  So we begin with the most shocking which includes Howie sharing the moment he almost lost his life, Andrew Rule on the crime that goes on under our nose, Mike Sheahan's biggest threats and Paddy Kisnorbo's dangerous tunnel fight in the UK.  The funniest category will have you in stitches as it features comedian's Ben Price & Lawrence Mooney, "Razor" Ray Chamberlain's hilarious umpire kit story, Mark Philippoussis' dumbest tennis injury and Brian Taylor's infamous Triple M boat trip!  In the insightful category we have a wide range kicking off with Jules Lund's Jim Stynes' impact. Then we hear Adrian Richardson's best cooking tips, Tony Doherty's opinion on steroids, Jeff Morgan's jail experience and Abbey Holmes' journey to where she is today. This category will inspire you and teach you a wide range of things that will make you the most insightful person in the room!  Finally, we turn our attention to the best of Uncut in 2024 which is hilarious. We look back at our 200th episode and the fears segment, the infamous text roulette and the rudest acts!  Again, we couldn't do the show without you all listening and we truly appreciate each and every one of you. Thank you for being part of the show in 2024, we hope this re-jogs the memory of some of the best bits and may inspire you to tune into an episode you ordinarily wouldn't!  Have a safe New Year and we will see you in 2025!!    Here is the episode numbers featured in this episode.  Mark Howard - 221  Andrew Rule - 205  Mike Sheahan - 195  Patrick Kisnorbo - 190  Ben Price - 216  Ray Chamberlain - 203  Lawrence Mooney - 194  Mark Philippoussis - 185  Brian Taylor - 225  Jules Lund - 223  Adrian Richardson - 215  Tony Doherty - 211  Jeff Morgan - 182  Abbey Holmes - 208  Uncut 200  Uncut 222  Uncut 214    This episode is brought to you by Fleet Plant Hire Solutions. And when we say everything...we mean EVERYTHING! And when it comes to Jules...expect the unexpected.  And for the first time in Dos & D history, we had to walk off set during the interview to confront something NOBODY saw coming!  Jules takes us behind the scenes of his incredible media career and the unorthodox rise he had into the industry. It is a majestic piece, 'Thinking about you, Ron Barassi' and it first aired during Preliminary Final week, 2018 on radio station SEN. It's the feature speech of this episode, as Martin discusses his torn allegiances for Grand Final day, having spent lengthy periods as an 'embedded' writer at both Footscray (Western Bulldogs) and Melbourne. He also talks about key figures in the piece, Jim Stynes, Robbie Flower, Liam Jurrah, Sean White, Nathan Jones, and of course Ron Barassi. Because Flanagan wrote a book on the 2016 Bulldogs, 'A Wink from the Universe', he also has stories about Marcus Bontempelli, Tom Liberatore, Bob Murphy and Easton Wood. I was lucky enough to see first hand what a inspiring leader Max is. He is an approachable captain that encourages his players to be themselves, which he credits Jim Stynes for in his early years at the demons. The overarching theme from Max is how incredibly important it is for people to be themselves. The pressure in society to fit in can often get in the way of accepting who you are. Throughout her career, Emeli had the opportunity to work with around 300 000 clients, helping them discover their purpose in life. She was also involved in the organization of over 10 000 workshops, seminars and special events where she had an opportunity to address people directly and across the globe. She was unsuspectingly standing on the street corner when she saw a young woman throw herself in front of a moving car. Luckily, the driver somehow managed to hit the breaks just in time. As Emeli approached her to provide comfort and attempt to calm her down, she learned that the young woman in the street was actually a victim of domestic abuse. She has been driven to the end of her rope, with no one to turn too. Emeli empathized with this woman’s story and she provided her with support when the health and justice system would not. She gave her a place to stay and was there for her in her time of need.As years went by the woman was able to get her life on track and she is confident Emeli played a crucial role in her recovery. From this experience, Emeli discovered her calling and went into the business of purpose coaching with a strong focus on preventative mental health.Emeli is no stranger to adversity. She had lost both of her parents in her youth and sought comfort in the use of drugs. But recreational use slowly but surely masked the problem of addiction she was struggling with.“I had some major addictions in my life… It’s taken me years to pull myself out of the addictions that I’ve had around drug taking and alcoholism.” - Emeli PauloShe was in a bad place but someone saw potential and put their trust in her the way she will go on to do for many. Jim Stynes was a famous AFL footballer and he was the first and only non-Australian-born player to win the Brownlow Medal. After his career in sports, he made his way into philanthropy by co-founding The Reach Foundation which is a youth not-for-profit organization. It was also the place where Emeli developed her skills as an experiential facilitator trainer.Jim Stynes passed away after a struggle with cancer and his death hit Emeli hard along with the rest of the team. However, she knew it was up to her to continue his work and give support to those who need it most.“When he passed away, I knew that I had to continue his work and his legacy to young people.” - Emeli PauloIn her eventful career, she has worked with hundreds of thousands of people but she has also inspired a whole movement of those who are willing to make a difference and help others the same way she is and has been.“I’ve trained over 2000 facilitators in experiential and some people are innate in it and others say I can’t do what you’re doing but you can train into that space.” - Emeli PauloThe Value of Preventative Mental Health“We have an epidemic and I really believe that I can speak the truth to the powers at be after a recent experience that I’ve had because I just think that what you’re doing with Inspired Evolution is saving lives.” - Emeli PauloThis powerful testimonial that Emeli has made about Inspired Evolution is both humbling but also speaking to the point of the alignment in our goals. Collective potential deals in preventative mental health in many different ways and Emeli provides us with insight into the international work she has performed over the years. By helping people find their “why” and discover their true purpose while providing them with the tools and empowering them to strive towards it, Emeli has managed to create a wave of wellbeing both domestically and internationally. The positive effects can’t be statistically represented in a way that would do justice to the work she’s doing.“You can’t know, you can not measure the preventative mental health.” - Emeli PauloEmeli’s Message of Inspired EvolutionTalking to Emeli was such a blessing and the work that she’s done over the years is a massive inspiration. It’s especially lovely how her warmth and kindness are being communicated with ease and when you combine that with her ability to build the momentum around her ideas you can’t be surprised by the huge amount of success she’s had. In the fight for preserving our mental health, she is on the front lines battling each day and bringing in amazing victories. She is very empowered, seeking to empower others and that is reflected in her message of Inspired Evolution:“You have the power to choose how you want your future to be.” - Emeli Paulo See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Over the years, I've tested dozens of digital productivity tools for setting goals and managing to-do lists. Although digital tools are useful, paper-based daily planners are becoming more popular. MiGoals is an example of an Australian company that sells these type of daily planners online.Co-founder Adam Jelic and his team created a series of daily planners and journals to help writers, entrepreneurs and creatives accomplish more each day. A former soccer player, Jelic started his business as a side-hustle in 2010, while working full-time selling photocopiers.Jelic felt motivated by the regarded Australian Football League Player, the late Jim Stynes, who encouraged people to get out of their comfort zone, face their fears, and do things that matter. So Jelic set a goal of leaving his full-time job to work at MiGoals full-time and support his family. But, how did Jelic turn this goal into reality?--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/becomeawritertoday/messageSupport the show (https://becomeawritertoday.com/join)

In a world with more distractions than ever before, people are flocking to productivity apps and organization tools to try to keep themselves on-task from day to day. With messages, articles, ads and notifications competing for our attention every minute, it’s no surprise that we’re jumping at the promise of a high-tech solution to help us manage our priorities. However is getting your life together really a matter of finding the right app to do it for you? Entrepreneur Adam Jelic doesn’t think so. In an increasingly app-focused market, Adam has found success with his line of artfully-designed goal-setting stationery. Good old-fashioned paper stationery. Unconventional goals Originally from Melbourne, Adam Jelic founded goal-centric stationery company MiGoals in 2010 out of his garage - in true entrepreneurial fashion. It's a bit ironic that becoming a professional planner wasn’t what he originally set out to do. First, Adam took some graphic design classes, had his try at professional soccer, enrolled in and promptly dropped out of university and worked a series of odd jobs. It wasn't until after he got married, started building a house from scratch, and found out he and his wife were expecting their first child that he landed on his golden idea. You could say he’s a man who thrives under pressure. Not content with the “safe” life plan his parents had set out for him—school, more school, and lifelong job security—Adam got comfortable with being uncomfortable from an early age, and decided that taking a few creative risks was well worth it. The Art of Ambition Growing up, Adam was surrounded by people who shied away from big, bold ambitions. He was raised with a strong awareness of barriers—namely, that you needed to start with money and connections, and if you didn’t have those, you’d be better off playing it safe. Adam wasn’t buying it. He set out to prove to his family and friends that it was possible for him to do bigger and better things—all he needed was a plan. “People would say, ‘Stop dreaming! You're a dreamer—get back to reality.’ I was always battling the people around me, to say it was possible to do something.” This determination was what got him fixated on goal-setting as a process, and he drew further inspiration from sources like Steve Jobs and Jim Stynes to help cement his ambition. Do You Need More RAM? So what makes Adam’s MiGoals stationery such a big deal? Mostly, the philosophy behind it. MiGoals planners aren’t just a place to write down your to-do list—it’s a personal coach on paper. Built into each diary is a space for setting your goals, and then taking time to revisit them every single month. By building regular check-ins into the system, Adam has designed the planners to be a far cry from the classic set-it-and-forget-it New Year’s resolutions we’re all too familiar with. He uses the acronym RAM—reflect, acknowledge, move. A lack of reflection, he says, is a big part of why so many people let their ambitions get away from them. If you aren’t revisiting your goals, checking in on your progress and planning your next moves, it can be easy to get off-track. MiGoals builds the RAM check-in right into its day planner, to help users get into the habit of goal assessment. “Life takes over, there's too much noise, we get distracted. And I think what it is is that we're overstimulated. Something new pops up all the time. We're looking for a quick fix, and we don't realize that it takes a lot of work and a lot of willpower.” How To Troubleshoot Your Goals Adam also gives Troy some advice on getting better at sticking with planning tools. It can be tough for anyone to stay focused and motivated enough to keep up with a daily planner, but Adam stresses that it’s all about building momentum. He says not to worry too much about not getting everything done on your to-do list—instead, really take the time to prioritize. Figure out what would be nice to get done, sure, but pare it down to which tasks each week are crucial to advancing toward your goals, and go from there. He also says it’s key to block out some dedicated time every week to do your planning, instead of trying to cram it in at random times when you’re busy and distracted. What’s Next So, what kind of goals does a professional goal-setter have? MiGoals’ products are currently available in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the US, and Adam hopes to expand into Asian markets soon as well. Long-term, he’s still uncertain about venturing into more high-tech solutions, but he is interested in expanding into tools for children, health and fitness goals—and on an even grander scale, he shares his ideas for a MiGoals concept store, a one-stop life organisation shop. Tom Bell has spent the last fifteen years speaking to people in a real, honest and impactful manner. He began working with groups of people through The Reach Foundation, with the legendary AFL player, Jim Stynes. He has worked with over 100,000 people: from high-level corporate executives, professional athletes to your everyday teenager. His work evolved from working with Jim into the organisation Tomorrow Man.They’re mission is to disrupt the stereotypes that surround what it means to be an Australian man. What does it mean to be a bloke today? And what do we want it to look like tomorrow? The tide is changing for men young and old and the outdated stereotype is leaving some of our mates, dads, sons, uncles, teammates, workmates and brothers stranded without the tools for a healthy life.In today’s world a lot of men are suffering as a result of not being able to open up emotionally.Holding everything together, not showing vulnerability, being the mate, the partner, the dad, the brother without a space to let go and be supported is taking its toll.Suicide is the biggest killer in Australian men between 15-44.This podcast was an emotional one for me after losing my brother, Sam to suicide last year.Yet, part of me wants to learn and understand suicide more and to be able to play a part in suicide prevention. More needs to be done. Through my own grief after Sam’s death I realised just how important our connections are with the people we love in order to find strength and resilience. I feel as a woman that asking for support is something that’s accepted. Yet I’ve watched a lot of men that I care deeply for suffer from the pain of mental illness, from ex-boyfriends, to friends to my brother, and also those men who have been my patients.I’ve heard a consistent message from them that they don’t always feel ok with sharing their struggles and vulnerabilities or in getting help, and that’s really something I wanted to learn more from Tom about.I found out about Tom when I called my friend Claire Eardley for some support: Claire’s son Kai sadly ended his own life in 2016. She has since started the kaifella foundation and has raised over $100,000.To quote Claire from the website:I believe a peer-based program available to young men, which helps to erase the tough macho stigma associated with our Australian male culture, and provides them with some skills to navigate mental illness and crises they will inevitably endure in life, is an important piece of education that is not available in our education curriculum today. If you wish to donates will go directly to support delivery of the program, Man Up, currently being delivered in Victoria and Ireland by Tomorrow Man facilitators Tom (who you hear in this interview) and Tom Harkin.Tomorrow Man.Tomorrow Man aim to disrupt and evolve the stereotype of masculinity - where did the rules originate and who made them? They want to redefine what it means to be a man and provide a relevant emotional skill set that can be applied in the real world for the men of today and tomorrow.Enabling men to strengthen their emotional muscle allows them to develop stronger supportive relationships, express themselves with clarity and confidence when under pressure and most importantly gives them the ability to ask for support when they need it without feeling weak or like a failure. They work in education, sporting clubs professional and amateur, workplaces and partner with aligned brands on unique projects with a social impact. Tom and I caught up at Hotel Miami – a new co-work, studio and event space. They were wonderful hosts to us with this podcast and I just want to give a little shout out to Darren for letting us use the family heirlooms for this interview.I hope you enjoy this episode with Tom BellJess xx
