Chris Jones's last view of God's Chosen People was from the balcony of the London meeting hall in Park Lane, as the Aberdeen crisis split JND's famous “Metropolitan” congregation in two, and half the “saints” stormed out of the hall amid angry recriminations. Born into the well known Barber brethren family, Chris changed his surname to Jones when he left, in defiance of his parent's appalling mistreatment of him. Intelligent and curious, and with a passion for geology and fossils, Chris found the narrow-minded and coercive Brethren regime unbearable, and his many acts of rebellion as a child resulted in harsh corporeal punishment. Leaving as soon as he legally could, Chris worked to pay his way through University, getting a B.Sc. with honors in Geology, and moved to Africa, where he became a exploration geologist and consultant for gold and platinum mining operations, then took up a teaching career as a lecturer in the University of Limpopo, South Africa. Chris had resolutely put his dark formative years in the PBCC behind him, and forged ahead with his exciting and successful life – but on his recent retirement, he came across the Get-A-Life podcasts, and felt a desire to tell his story, and to offer hope, encouragement and help to the current generation of young people trapped inside the narrow walls of the cult. Above all, Chris' sparkling and warm personality shines out in this podcast, as a testimony to an exciting, happy and successful life that had such a dark and unpromising beginning.

Abstract: Working memory (WM) reflects the transient maintenance of information in the absence of external input, which can be attained via multiple senses separately or simultaneously. Pertaining to WM, the prevailing literature suggests the dominance of vision over other sensory systems. However, this imbalance may be attributed to challenges of finding stimuli that are represented in comparable ways across modalities. Here, we addressed this methodological problem by using a balanced multisensory "retro-cue" WM design. The to-be-memorized stimuli consisted of combinations of auditory (ripple sounds) and visuospatial (Gabor patches) patterns, which have been shown to undergo similar transformations during WM encoding and retrieval. Using a staircase procedure, the auditory ripple velocities and spatial frequencies of Gabor patches were adjusted relative to each participant's just noticeable differences (JND) separately in each modality, before the main task. The task was to audiovisually compare the probes to the memorized items. In randomly ordered trials, the probe either fully matched or differed from the memory item auditorily, visually, or audiovisually. The participants correctly rejected a significantly larger number of auditory non-match probes than visual non-match probes. Our findings suggest that, in the case of inter-sensory competition during feature maintenance, auditory attributes of multisensory WM items can be retrieved more precisely than their visual counterparts when complexity of the content and task demands are bimodally equated. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.28.550867v1?rss=1 Authors: McIlroy, R. E., Barnett-Cowan, M. Abstract: Background: Vision can significantly impact both the perception and behaviour related to postural control. This study examines the influence of vision on the perception of postural instability onset. Previous research employing Temporal Order Judgment (TOJ) tasks to investigate the perceived timing of postural perturbation onset has not incorporated visual cues. Research question: Does the presence of visual feedback affect the point of subjective simultaneity (PSS) between postural perturbation onset and an auditory reference stimulus and does this additional sensory cue increase TOJ precision? Methods: Using a lean-and-release paradigm, 10 participants were exposed to postural perturbations in both eyes closed (EC) and eyes open (EO) conditions using a TOJ task where they indicated whether they perceived postural instability onset or sound onset as occurring first for each trial. Separate paired t-tests between EC and EO PSS and just noticeable difference (JND) values were used. One-sample t-tests were also used on PSS values for both conditions, comparing them to 0ms (true simultaneity). Results: The EC condition demonstrated a perceived delay of postural instability onset by 25.78 ms, while the EO condition showed a perceived delay of the auditory stimulus by 12.33 ms. However, no significant differences were found between the conditions or in comparison to true simultaneity. Mean JND values for EC (39.88 ms) and EO (46.48 ms) were not significantly different, suggesting visual information does not affect response precision for this task under these conditions. Significance: These findings indicate that visual information does not significantly affect the perception of postural instability onset. This suggests that visual information may play a limited role in the early perceptual stages of postural instability. Copy rights belong to original authors. By John Bramhall The longing hearts of many believers for the return of our blessed Lord can be expressed in the words of Judges 5:28, “Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why tarry the wheels of his chariot”? The multiplicity of violence and corruption upon the earth today, coupled with increased testings of various kinds, may also tend to produce the spirit of impatience for our final deliverance to the spiritual heart. “Lord, When are you coming? Why do you not come today?” may often be expressed. This is where our need for patience appears. We need the prayerful exhortation of Paul —” The Lord Direct Your Hearts into the Love of God, and Into the Patience of the Christ” — (2 Thess. 3:5 JND). https://plymouthbrethren.org/author/29

Perceiving Depth from Texture and Disparity Cues: Evidence for a Non-Probabilistic Account of Cue Integration

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.20.513044v1?rss=1 Authors: Kemp, J. T., Cesanek, E., Domini, F. Abstract: The fundamental question of how the brain derives 3D information from the inherently ambiguous visual input has been approached during the last two decades with probabilistic theories of 3D perception. Probabilistic models, such as the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) model, derive from multiple independent depth cues the most probable 3D interpretations. These estimates are then combined by weighing them according to their uncertainty to obtain the most accurate and least noisy estimate. In three experiments we tested an alternative theory of cue integration termed the Intrinsic Constraint (IC) theory. This theory postulates that the visual system does not derive the most probable interpretation of the visual input, but the most stable interpretation amid variations in viewing conditions. This goal is achieved with the Vector Sum model, that represents individual cue estimates as components of a multidimensional vector whose norm determines the combined output. In contrast with the MLE model, individual cue estimates are not accurate, but linearly related to distal 3D properties through a deterministic mapping. In Experiment 1, we measured the cue-specific biases that arise when viewing single-cue stimuli of various simulated depths and show that the Vector Sum model accurately predicts an increase in perceived depth when the same cues are presented together in a combined-cue stimulus. In Experiment 2, we show how Just Noticeable Differences (JNDs) are accounted for by the IC theory and demonstrate that the Vector Sum model predicts the classic finding of smaller JNDs for combined-cue versus single-cue stimuli. Most importantly, this prediction is made through a radical re-interpretation of the JND, a hallmark measure of stimulus discriminability previously thought to estimate perceptual uncertainty. In Experiment 3, we show that biases found in cue-integration experiments cannot be attributed to flatness cues, as assumed by the MLE model. Instead, we show that flatness cues produce no measurable difference in perceived depth for monocular (3A) or binocular viewing (3B), as predicted by the Vector Sum model. Reduce to the Ridiculousness (JND): This technique involves paring down your request to something that seems manageable, easier to comprehend or easier to monetize. Let's say you are trying to convince someone to purchase a life insurance policy. The client wants a $250,000 policy and you feel that is not high enough for his needs. To adequately take care of his family, you suggest a $500,000 policy. His perception is that the monthly payment for a $500,000 policy is too high. So you break it down for him, telling him that for an extra 50 cents a day, or the cost of a can of soda, he can insure himself and adequately take care of his family if something were to happen to him. With this contrast, your client can see that the extra 50 cents is worth it to have the extra $250,000 in coverage. You have reframed your request into simple terms to help your prospect see it fitting into his way of life. If you are getting resistance from coworkers to participate in a new project, you could say we are only looking for your help for 10 minutes a day or 45 minutes a week.  Many times, we can fly under the radar with the contrast principle. There is a theory called the "Just Noticeable Difference" (JND),  which means the minimum amount of difference in the intensity of the stimulus that can be detected. That means the minimal amount of change the brain can handle before it begins to notice.  What does this mean? How much can you raise the price of a product without anyone noticing? This is also true for taste. Companies want the best taste for the lowest cost. The quality of the ingredients causes people to notice or not notice the quality of the product.  Many marketers would rather change the packaging and offer less of their product than resort to charging more. When we don't notice the difference, we think we are getting the same deal. Watching a sunset would be below the JND.  We really can’t see the sun move down the horizon as we watch it. When you raise the price of a product, you don’t want anyone to notice. Gas prices going up another ten cents is not noticed unless it breaks the dollar threshold i.e. $4.00-$5.00.  Is the yogurt cup now 2.9 ounces or 3 ounces?  We don’t notice especially since the cup size has not changed, but the bottom of the cup is more concave.    3 Negotiation Techniques from Harvard Business Review   REVISED OFFER

Background/Aims: Specific language impairment (SLI) is believed to be associated with nonverbal auditory (NVA) deficits. It remains unclear, however, whether children with SLI show deficits in auditory time processing, time processing in general, frequency discrimination (FD), or NVA processing in general. Patients and Methods: Twenty-seven children (aged 8-11) with SLI and 27 control children (CG), matched for age and gender, were retrospectively compared with regard to their performance on five NVA skills in terms of just noticeable differences (JND) and time order judgments (TOJ). JND was used for FD, intensity discrimination, and gap detection, while TOJ was used for FD and clicks. Results: Children with SLI performed significantly worse than the CG only on the FD tasks (JND and TOJ). The other nonverbal tasks showed no significant intergroup differences. Additionally, moderate associations were found between the FD tasks and phonological skills, as well as between FD tasks and language scores. Conclusion: Children with SLI appear to have restricted FD skills compared to controls, but there was no evidence for a common NVA deficit or reduced temporal auditory abilities.
