visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more“I remember I got paid $20 for a gig, man,” says RUSTEE ALLEN, funk bassist extraordinaire, first introduced to the world via the transcendent soul staple FRESH by none other than Sly & the Family Stone. “I thought I made a ton of money!” he laughs. “I didn't even know you even got paid for playing,” agrees his good friend and fellow Bay Area legend LEVI SEACER JR., a guitarist who went from playing hardcore jazz in local clubs to touring the world with PRINCE and his New Power Generation. “That's how innocent I was about it… When I got my first check I'm like ‘What's this?'” Rustee was first spotted by the Sly camp as a youngster playing in support of local legend Johnny Talbot, much admired by all the top Bay Area funkateers at the time. Along with drummer WILLIE WILD, (who would later be part of the original lineup of Graham Central Station), Rustee was chosen to back up LITTLE SISTER, an offshoot of Sly's Fam featuring Vet Stone and piloted by Freddie Stone. Next thing Rustee knew, he was “auditioning” to join the Fam as a full-fledged member—in front of 30,000 people in Virginia! Soon after that, Rustee was in the studio for the Fresh sessions, laying down tunes in basically one take each. “The first takes are the best ones anyway,” says Rustee. As for Levi, he spent his youth gigging at spots like Earl's Solano Club in the East Bay, playing jazz with ladies such as Rosie Gaines and Sheila Escovedo. “Playing was like taking a glass of water,” says Levi. “Just natural.” His confidence and skill got him noticed by Don Cornelius of Soul Train fame, who put him to work. Then one day Levi stopped by an audition that Escovedo — now known as Sheila E — was holding for bass players. Though Levi was a guitar man, she asked him to take the gig once she had heard him play “A Love Bizarre” on the four-string. This of course put him in the same orbit as PRINCE himself— who would eventually bring him into the fold not only as a player, but also as writer and producer. Like Rustee, Levi had found himself thrust into the spotlight, breathing the rarefied air of an internationally acclaimed artist with a new band. Rustee's return to Aced Out is a pivotal moment for us, as he was our very first guest for our pilot episode just a little over four years ago. In this inspirational interview, Rustee and Levi describe what made Sly and Prince amazing bandleaders, and what it was really like within those soul circles. As well, Rustee describes why his mother told him he was her most adventurous child, and what it was like onstage and off during Sly's Lifetime Achievement Award performance at the 2006 Grammys, while Levi breaks down how Prince was like a “cool computer” and why every musician in Minneapolis hated the New Power Generation—at first, that is. If all that weren't enough, the purple brothas also bring a band in the studio to perform Rustee's single “You're the One!” Produced & Hosted by Ace AlanCohosted by Jay StoneExecutive Producer Scott SheppardWebsite and Graphics by 3chards Engineered by Grace Coleman at Different Fur Studios, San Francisco CA Video & Sound Editing + Interview Mix & Graphics by Nick “Waes” Carden for Off Hand Records, Oakland CA Video Production by Saboor BidarMusical Performance:TONY PROVIDENCE — drumsCARL WHEELER — keysMORGAN DAY – guitarCARL NORDE — vocalsLEVI SEACER JR. — guitar, vocalsRUSTEE ALLEN — bass, vocals Musical Performance Mix by Levi Seacer Jr.Rap verses by Corey the Greatan Issac Bradbury Production © 2022visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more

visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more“Keepin that funk alive, to me, there's no more of an important mission.” So declares PATRYCE “CHOC'LET” BANKS, cofounder of one of the most important bands in all of funk history: Graham Central Station. “That's my mission,” she promises. “To keep the funk alive until the wheels fall off.” And she has been doing just that ever since the formation of the band's classic lineup with her former boo, uber innovative Sly & the Fam bassist Larry Graham, along with drummer Willie Wild, keyboardist Hershall Happiness, organist Robert “Butch” Sam, & guitarist David Dynamite. Together they hit the ground running from the jump. Word got out immediately that the band was superbad—folks would even get dressed up just to check out their rehearsals! Their constant practicing and performing at spots like the Orphanage in San Francisco led to the creation of their groundbreaking self-titled debut—(Choc'let's personal favorite). Yet even the most diehard funkateers might not realize that, before it was called Graham Central Station, the band was originally called HOT CHOC'LET, formed as a project for her to get down with while Larry was on the road. But after Graham had finally decided to relinquish his Family Stone membership, he joined the group, which then became his namesake. Choc'let wasn't mad about the new moniker, though. “I was with it because… how could you go wrong with Larry Graham in the group?” she says. “I think it was even my idea maybe a little bit.” Graham's breaking away from the Sly camp meant GCS could seriously get to work. “We would rehearse all the time,” remembers Choc'let. “Almost every night… And we were just getting tighter and tighter.” And audiences were easily falling in love with the band's celebratory intensity. “The music that we played was deeply infused with gospel music,” she confirms. “So that gave it the feeling of a revival… because of the way that it makes you feel and the way it gets you caught up.” In fact, audience members from San Francisco to Philly to D.C. would bring tambourines, whistles, and whatever percussion instrument they could find so they could get in on the action. “They'd be playing along with us,” she says. Choc'let's latest appearance on Aced Out—her third—is a superfunk extravaganza. In addition to another great interview, she performs not one, but TWO Bay Area funk classics live in the studio with Jay, Ace and other members of the Funkanauts fam. And in case you were wondering, the answer is yes—she brought her Rhythm King aka F-U-N-K Box. In this back-to-to school, in-person interview, Choc talks about why she thinks Sly was a better bandleader than Larry, the highs and lows of her reunion tour with GCS in the mid-90s, and why she dislikes the album version of “I Can't Stand the Rain.” She also reveals how Willie and Hershall originally came up with “The Jam” at rehearsal, how she recruited her old friend Butch to join the group, and why the Bay Area brand of funk has never been duplicated. an Issac Bradbury Production © 2022visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more

On August 2nd, 2006, 23-year old Brandi Wells made plans to gather with friends and hang out at a club. She first stopped to visit her mom in Tyler, Texas where the pair chatted for a while and Brandi got dressed for her night out. Before leaving her mother's home, Brandi mentioned to her mom that she was low on cash and gas in her car. Although her mother was not financial able to assist her at the time, this did not stop Brandi from proceeding with her plans as she still proceeded with her plans for the night.Although, Brandi did not mention to her mom exactly what nightclub she was heading to, her mother assumed that she had gone out to a local club in Tyler called the Electric Cowboy. The next morning, Brandi's car was found by a State Trooper on the side of highway I-20 in Longview, Texas. Brandi was nowhere to be found. It was then discovered that Brandi, in fact, had traveled approximately 45 minutes to attend a club called Graham Central Station in Longview. What happened to Brandi that night after she left the nightclub in Longview still remains a mystery. How was Brandi able to drive 45 minutes to away from her mother's home if she was low on cash and gas in her car? Did Brandi really meet up with her friends that night and if so, why hadn't they come forward with information? Why was her car found on the side of the highway with some of her belongings inside, but no trace of her anywhere? Did Brandi meet with foul play the night she left the nightclub? After 16 years of Brandi still remaining a missing person, there are more questions than answers. At the time Brandi disappeared, she stood 4'11 and was approximately 130 pounds. She was wearing a floral print brown and cream-colored tube top with a V cut over the hip, rust-colored gaucho pants, black strapless high-heeled sandals with a floral applique. She was driving a black four-door 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix.If anyone has any information as to the whereabouts of Brandi Ellen Wells, please call the Longview Police Department at 903–237–1110.Sources Used for this Episode:https://medium.com/the-mystery-box/missing-in-texas-where-is-brandi-ellen-wells-b25a04d0f96ehttps://www.ketk.com/news/special-reports/vanished/vanished-brandi-wells/https://charleyproject.org/case/brandi-ellen-wellsSponsorshipsCrime Critics & Chaos is sponsored by Hugo Granados and Tia Edwards.Hugo Granados is a major contribution to CCC Podcast for our wine and dine collection. It was August 2nd, 2006. Summer was still beating down on Texas. Just under 100*, Brandi braves the sun and jumps in her car, heading to her moms house. Brandi lived in Brownsboro, about 20 miles east of her mothers residence in Tyler. She'd recently re-enrolled in college and had moved home from San Antonio. She'd gone through a divorce and was excited to start a new life. On this day, Brandi was planning on going out to a club for a night of fun before classes started. She arrived at her moms house and invited her younger sister to come out to the club with her. Her sister declined, stating she wasn't feeling well. In fact, her sister was in bed asleep by the time Brandi left. A short time later, Brandi came out, asked her mom if she looked alright in her outfit- a tan tube top, rust colored gaucho pants and black high heel sandals. Her mom said she looked cute. Brandi would set up her make-up bag on the table in the living room and do her makeup Brandi thanked her and proceeded to ask to borrow her mothers car. Her 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix was working fine, however, was low on gas. Her mom declined, stating her vehicle was also low on gas. No money was exchanged to top off the tank. Brandi was low on cash- she had just moved, enrolled in school, and her job hasn't started yet. Determined to have a good night, she kisses her mother good night and leaves. She leaves at around 8 PM. Brandi did not disclose which club she was going to. Her mom assumed a club in Tyler. Instead, Brandi was set on visiting Graham Central Station in Longview. Brandi has been missing for over 15 years. If you have any information as to the whereabouts of Brandi Ellen Wells, please call the Longview Police Department at 903–237–1110. ** visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more **“When you think of Motown, you think of Detroit,” explains timbale player RICHARD SEGOVIA, celebrating his 42nd year with his band PURO BANDIDO. “When you think of LATIN ROCK, it’s right there in the MISSION”—the Mission District that is, the legendary San Francisco neighborhood where the genre was born. And a very young Segovia—now affectionately known to the community as the “Mayor of the Mission”—was right there to see the birth of this new sound. According to Richard, it all started with the Aliens, a five-piece formed at Mission High School in 1964 by Nicaraguan and El Salvadorian immigrants inspired by Ritchie Valens and the neighboring Haight Ashbury scene. “They were the first kinda Latin Rock band,” Segovia explains. One night, CARLOS SANTANA, then a promising young guitarist playing in a blues band, went to see the Aliens at a club called the Night Life. Santana was inspired—it occurred to him that he needed lots of percussion to give his music that special fire. That’s where his fellow future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer JOSE “CHEPITO” AREAS came in. “It was Chepito who brought percussion into Santana,” Segovia asserts. “Chepito brought the conga, the timbale, and added that to blues—changed the whole thing… Everybody wanted to play music after that.”Suddenly the hood’s troubled youth—with the crime and violence always inevitable where there is lack of money and opportunity—found a new direction. “We went from the battle of the barrios to the battle of the bands,” confirms Segovia. For his part, he joined his first band, Dungeon Sounds, on timbales because the drummer and conga positions had already been taken. They played everywhere they could, doing songs by Santana, Malo, and Azteca. “That was our top 40,” he says. The band broke up after a couple years, but Richard kept going, joining Por Vida and then Mbuhai, the latter band challenging his musical abilities considerably. “These guys were way over my head,” he confirms. “The conga player didn’t want to play with me because I didn’t know shit!” They practiced five days a week and, as always, it was sink or swim. “Nobody gave up any information back then,” he explains. “Either you had it, or you didn’t… Nobody’s gonna teach you. You got to learn it on your own… If you didn’t get it right away—‘Next!’”Meanwhile, the Latin Rock scene wasn’t off on an island of its own. Everybody was paying attention and needed some for themselves, even super funk blasters like Larry Graham, who offered Mbuhai an opening slot with Graham Central Station in Redwood City. As it turned out, Clive Davis and many other record execs were in the crowd that night. The next day, Brent Dangerfield, who’d produced Santana, offered to produce Mbuhai for CBS Records. If that weren’t enough, a gig opening for Graham Central Station at the Soul Train club on Broadway led to Don Cornelius asking Mbuhai to be his house band. Next thing they knew, they were supporting acts like Minnie Riperton, Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, the Bar Kays, and Eddie Kendricks. Unfortunately, the Mbuhai album was recorded yet shelved due to circumstances outside the band’s control. But all of this experience had taught Richard how to be a leader himself. So from 1979 to today, he has presided over his badass band PURO BANDIDO—with guitarist Johnny Gunn as his “co-jefe” since ’85. But music is just a portion of what Segovia brings to Latin Rock culture. He is also a major producer and promoter of its artistic aesthetic, a drive that culminates into his crowning achievement: turning his own home into an SF landmark. A few years ago, he was approached by the Precita Eyes Muralists Association, a local nonprofit that does all the murals in the Mission. Under a grant from the California Arts Commission and through the Urban Youth Arts Program, Segovia was asked if he wanted to have his house—the same one on the corner of York & 25th that his parents had bought in the early 60s—to be covered with a mural. He could choose the theme, anything he wanted. Chewing on this opportunity, Segovia went to visit his buddy, Ishmael Versoza aka “Irish,” keyboardist and original member of the Fabulous Malibus, who later became Malo. Richard saw that Irish had some cool old band pictures on the wall. The conclusion was obvious. “I’ve been a Latin Rock player for 52 years,” says Richard, recalling his thought process. “Why don’t I dedicate the mural to Carlos Santana for bringing Latin Rock music to the Mission District?” Soon, artists from age 5 to 45 were covering his house, dubbed CASA BANDIDO, with wonderful paintings of almost 100 Latin Rock Legends, including Carlos’ late brother Jorge Santana, great friend to Segovia and co-creator of the Mission anthem, Malo’s “Suavecito.” As Richard explains, “I decided to preserve what we have left—because all the techies are coming into the neighborhood buying up all our stuff and I wanted the neighborhood to know I aint’ goin nowhere, man. I’m sticking here. I’m gonna die here.”Finally, Segovia is a true community leader, a man who knows how to organize with boundless energy when it comes to working with kids, teaching them how to be safe and play a little music. He has received numerous honors and countless thank-you letters over the years from citizens and politicians alike. In fact, before he passed, SF Mayor Ed Lee announced that September 17th is Richard Segovia Day. On October 16, 2021, Richard will hold a free concert at La Raza Park, where he will pay tribute to the too many greats who have left us recently, including Jorge Santana, Armando Parraza, Malo singer Arcelio Garcia, Raul Rico, and Rudy Salas. And before the show, he will unveil additions to his mural, including Pete, Sheila E., and the rest of the Escovedo family. In this energetic, educational, and laughter-filled interview, the Mayor discusses the African roots of the clave, why he loved Bill Graham, and playing for Eddie Money from ‘85 until his passing. Richard also talks about how his uncle Michael V. Rios designed the cover for Santana’s Grammy-winning Supernatural album at Casa Bandido, what it’s like hanging out with Al Hendrix, father to Jimi, and what the lyrics to “La Cucaracha” are really about. If all of that weren’t enough, Jay and Ace had so much fun with Richard that, less than two weeks after this interview was recorded, they performed with him alongside members of Puro Bandido, and Irish (!) from Malo at an event at the house.Produced & Hosted by Ace AlanCohosted & Coproduced by Jay Stone Website & Art by 3chardsIn-studio Photos and by Debbie JueEngineered by Dominic Brown at Soul Graffiti Studios in Oakland, CA with thanks to & Justin Ancheta, Andrew, & Alex Scammon…but we couldn’t have done it without Scott Sheppard

“I have literally danced my entire life,” says SWEET LD, OG member of MC HAMMER and the POSSE and its pioneering, all-women offshoot OAKTOWN 357. And as a young lady living in the East Bay, CA in the 80s, that was just about all LD aka Suhayla Sabir and her friends ever wanted to do. She especially loved to frequent a place called Silk’s in Emeryville because it had three floors, each with its own jams to get down to. “Silk’s was my spot,” she recalls. “We were always there. We would go and get in as soon as we could—stand in that long line—and then we would stay until the sun came up. That was just our M.O.”Suhayla was there one night when she noticed MC Hammer, who was just trying to get his feet wet as an artist/performer at the time. He was no joke on the floor, just killing the cabbage patch, a dance she had just learned herself—but not like that! She became so fixated that afterwards she and her friends followed him to a gas station. Hammer, paying himself the compliment that she was trying to flirt, was caught off guard when she simply asked: “Can you teach me to do the cabbage patch?”Weeks later, she was part of his core clique. “We were literally just hanging out. It was just about the dance. We would just tear that dance floor up.” In other words, she had no thoughts of bustin moves professionally, much less making music herself. But that all changed one night when Hammer asked her and a friend if they wanted to be in a music video. “We were excited because we thought that being in a video meant that we were just going to be cute,” she says. “You know—wear the cute outfit, be the cute girl… He had something totally different in mind.”So Suhayla found herself at long, rigorous rehearsals, running choreography and sweating from mid-afternoon till midnight. “We were not excited about that initially,” she says. Music videos were still pretty new at that time and she had never thought about what went into making one. “It became like ‘Do we have to keep showing up?’ Cuz we were really showing up out of good faith… It was kind of a confusing time.” Meanwhile, two key sistas entered the scene as well: Phyllis Charles and Tabitha Zee King-Brooks. Eventually, Hammer did clue the ladies in: he wanted them to be backup dancers for his whole show. They performed everywhere they could as MC Hammer and the Posse, and the ladies—aka Sweet LD, Lil P, and Terrible T—brought their high-voltage, superhype dance style to classic videos like “Let’s Get It Started,” “Pump It Up,” and “Turn This Mutha Out.” Things began to build so fast that Hammer negotiated a deal to partner his Bust-It imprint with Capitol Records. That’s when he began formulating a plan to produce a female rapper. He had been auditioning girls for the gig when, messing around between songs at a rehearsal, Lil P grabbed a mic and started busting the song “Tramp” by Salt-N-Pepa. Hammer liked what he heard and approached P about becoming a solo artist. She agreed—but only if her homegirls Terrible T and Sweet LD would rap with her.Oaktown 357 was born, and their debut Wild & Loose (1989) was a smash, with hit singles/videos for “Yeah Yeah Yeah” and “Straight at You.” Now the ladies were busier than ever—on the road opening for Hammer and then doing his set, all while training new dancers as they came into the fold. But things took a hard turn when the Posse appeared on the Arsenio Hall Show. Backstage after the taping, everyone was presented with a check—for an amount that actually seemed decent. For the ladies of Oaktown, it was a revelation. With Hammer, they had always been wondering about getting paid, or why they weren’t. This seemed to confirm that their blood and sweat was worth a lot more. Lil P left outright, leaving Terrible T and LD to regroup amongst themselves. “I could understand why Lil P left,” remembers LD. “But… I wanted to know that I could see it through. So we talked and we determined between the two of us that we would stay… and that we would work well enough together to make them change their minds about how they treated us.” The sistas soldiered on without missing a step, enjoying hit singles/videos for remixes of “We Like It” and the smash “Juicy Gotcha Crazy.” They also appeared on the West Coast classic antiviolence cut “We’re All in the Same Gang” alongside N.W.A., Tone Loc, and Ice T. And the ladies stepped up their game for their follow-up album Fully Loaded (1991), a crowning achievement and one of the most underrated gems of the era. Today, as a mom, fitness instructor, and published poet, Sweet LD remains proud of Oaktown 357’s legacy. “We did the damn thing—period,” she asserts. “We invested in ourselves to show up and do the work and then we created something and shared it with everybody in this world. And today they still look at us as someone who changed the dynamic for women in hip hop.” Indeed! In this inspiring, behind-the-scenes interview, Sweet LD raps about growing up watching her cousin Choc’let get down with Graham Central Station, how Hammer taught her how to “build” a dance in order to tell a story, and why the deceptive nature of the music industry means you need to ask questions. She also talks about how 357 songs were created in the studio, her recent comeback performances alongside acts like Lady of Rage and 702, and that time Prince personally gave her a tour of Paisley Park and kissed her hand. Alex took her last drink April 25, 2020. With exactly 109 days away from alcohol, (at the time of recording) this is her story of living alcohol free (AF).   Odette’s weekly installment of: Finding Your Better You   The end of the year is the time when Odette sees a lot of “fuck-its”. Putting your goals on hold and coasting to the end of the year, to start fresh in the new year. 2020 particularly has been hard as so much was put on hold; we can now choose to make this year mean nothing or everything. Keep going, keep putting your good energy into the year. The rest of this year is a marathon, not a sprint to 2021. Hold onto your sobriety, visualize your path, see the people along the way cheering you on, see the finish line. You can do this.   [7:30] Odette introduces Alex   Alex is 28 years old. She is originally from Indianapolis, IN and just moved to Denver, CO. She loves hiking, mountain biking, being outside. She lives with a roommate and her dog. She’s the “designated ice cream friend” among her group of friends.   [10:50] Can you give listeners some background on your drinking?   Alex said she was never someone who drank daily, but she found herself often in drinking situations and she wasn’t able to moderate. She moved from Chicago back to Indianapolis and the drinking didn’t change like she hoped it would. Alex began to make rules around her drinking to try to moderate. Morning after morning of not remembering nights she began to explore and consider a life without alcohol. She wanted to remember everything.     [14:04] What drew you to start listening to Recovery Elevator?   Alex said when she was questioning her drinking, she felt she couldn’t tell anyone in her circle of friends but knew there had to be something out there in the podcast world. There was one in particular that spoke to her, she saw herself in the interviewee. Alex began to get angry at the alcohol.     [17:42] What tools work for you?   Alex said she walks every day, minimum 2 hours. That’s been therapeutic for her. It allows her to slow down and focus on the little things in life. When she feels a craving, she goes for a walk.   [19:08] Do people around you know you’re sober?   Alex said everybody knows now. It started as a whisper to some people and now it’s something that is just known. When 1000 Hours Dry was looking for a host, she signed right up, giving her an extra layer of accountability.      [23:27] What’s your worst memory from drinking?   Alex said she woke up one morning, not remembering at all how she got home from the night before. She decided to take herself out to brunch, where she drank and rode herself home on her bike. She had an accident, breaking her wrist and giving herself a concussion.      [27:00] What’s your go to response when someone offers you a drink?   Alex said she says “no thank you, I have my own drink!”     [28:55] Have you gotten to the bottom of why you chose to drink?   Alex said she was lonely and seeking validation. She felt she would be more likable if she drank.     [33:28] Do you ever feel a disconnect in your age decade and when you got sober?   Alex said she was nervous about this choice and how it would affect her social life. Reframing the idea of not drinking is what helped her get through it. She wanted to remember the things that hadn’t happened yet.     [33:28] Do you ever feel a disconnect in your age decade and when you got sober?   Alex said she was nervous about this choice and how it would affect her social life. Reframing the idea of not drinking is what helped her get through it.     [36:41] What’s been the hardest part of the last few months?   Letting go of expectations and having different expectations. Having to go with the flow.     [39:16] Do you have a daily routine?   Alex said she making coffee is therapeutic to her. She focuses on the enjoyment she will get from the process and the end result. She journals while drinking the coffee. Her walking is also part of what keeps her sane. Alex has some playlists that bring her peace.        [43:42] Rapid Fire Round    If you could talk to day 1 Dusty, what would you say?   You deserve a life without alcohol.   What are you excited about right now?   Getting yoga certification, meeting new people.   What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?   Graham Central Station or TJ Cookie Butter   What is a lightbulb moment you’ve had in this journey?   You don’t need a drink. You just need to be and sit through the feeling.   What parting piece of guidance can you give listeners?   I promise this decision is fun.     You may have to say adios to booze...    You’re only guaranteed to go to a wedding if there’s an open bar.   Odette’s weekly challenge:   Commit to finishing the race. Her first album in 1973 was produced by Sly & the Family Stone drummer Greg Errico (featured in another TRUTH IN RHYTHM episode) and featured members of Graham Central Station.Davis, whose last name came from a short marriage with jazz legend Miles Davis, released three blistering albums in the first half of the 1970s, but her raw sounds and overt sexuality relegated her to cult status. By the end of that decade, she abandoned her music career, seldom to be heard from again. However, through the years her status grew such that today she is considered a trailblazing legend. That story is told in 2017’s documentary, “Betty: They Say I’m Different,” which also features Mills and other members of her Funkhouse band. Here he shares insights into her enigmatic life, trailblazing and music.RECORDED JULY 2020LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content is protected by copyright. Don’t even get PATRYCE BANKS aka CHOC’LET from Graham Central Station started on the expression “old school,” which she can’t stand. “Here in America… it’s all about what is next,” she explains. “So anything that is vintage is considered old and old is considered no good… They want to throw everything old or experienced or vintage or classic away… So ‘old’ has a negative connotation.” Instead, she prefers to call it “true school,” or better yet, “BACK TO SCHOOL.”In fact, when manager Dick Griffey got a very young Choc’let a gig opening for Sly & the Family Stone, she had already been going to “school,” performing and touring with bands for years—(Including a stint with Bobby & the Promises, a group she had with future GCS organist Robert “Butch” Sam, and Bobby Watson, who would later play in Rufus). At the show, though she was a self-described “Sly & the Family Stone freak” who highly admired every person in the band, Choc’let asked Griffey if she could meet just one member: fonk bass innovator Larry Graham.Six months later, Choc’let found herself moving from her Los Angeles home to shack up with Larry in Oakland. When she first arrived, it was all she could have dreamed of and more. But soon reality set in. She found herself just sitting at home with Larry’s grandmother while he was out galivanting on the road. This would not do. So Choc’let told him things needed to change, and quick. That’s when the couple formed Hot Choc’let, a decision that would prove enormously consequential to both of their lives. Not long after that, circumstances compelled Larry to break with Sly & the Fam and join Hot Choc’let himself, changing the name to GRAHAM CENTRAL STATION.After one of their regular gigs at the Orphanage in San Francisco, GCS was quickly snatched up by Warner Bros. Then Choc’let and the band toured all over the world and recorded some of the most pivotal fonk albums of all time: Graham Central Station, (her personal favorite), Release Yourself, and Ain’t No Doubt It Bout It. But somewhere along the line, this band that she had put so much blood and sweat into began selling a message she didn’t really believe in, while ripping her off for songwriting credit and—more importantly—money. So she left during the recording of Mirror to find her own way.Over the ensuing years, Choc’let’s diverse vocal skills landed her gig after gig, as everyone seemed to want a little Choc’let in their sauce. She toured with Stephanie Mills, Chaka Khan, and B.B. King. She made music with Wayne Henderson of the Jazz Crusaders, recorded solo joints, and shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the fonk biz. She even took part in a GCS reunion in the mid 90s—till she figured out they were getting played on the money again. Today, Choc’let has honed her craft as a broadcaster, clothing designer, and author. And she still fonks whenever she can.It is difficult to overstate the impact of the almighty Graham Central Station on fans, musicians, and the very genre of fonk itself. And the same can be said about Choc’let’s impact upon GCS, with her attention-commanding, booming yet golden voice, and her never-seen-before live performance of the F-U-N-K Box!And Choc’let understands the importance and impact of that legacy full well. That’s why, even though there’s still no love lost between her and Graham, she wouldn’t say no to another GCS reunion in the future. “If Larry called me tomorrow, I would go back,” she says. “Because to me, at the end of the day, it’s about the fonk. It’s about the legacy of fonk and the truth of the matter is, there are not many of us left that came from that era that are out here still doing it.”In this compelling, truth-telling interview, Choc’let talks about forming and creating classic tracks with Graham Central Station, how ego essentially broke up the original band, what it was like to hang out with Betty Davis, and why all true fonk fans should read Choc’let’s book, Deja View: Memoirs of a Funk Diva. She also recalls how she wound up singing on There’s a Riot Goin’ On, how a session with Dr. Dre led to a stint as lead singer for Rose Royce, and that time she saw Jimi Hendrix split his pants from behind at Isle of Wight.

Twenty-three year old Brandi Wells was beginning to put her life back on track.  After a failed marriage and traveling throughout Texas, she moved to Brownsboro, just twenty minutes away from her hometown of Tyler.  She re-enrolled in college, to pursue a degree in education, and had just gotten a new job.  Things were looking up.  On August 2nd, 2006, Brandi decided to go out for one last night of fun before she had to focus on her studies and job.  This night, she would decide to go to Longview, TX, to a club known as Graham Central Station.  Only a few people knew her destination, and no one knew why.  Brandi was seen entering and exiting the club, but after that, she vanished.  Her car was found the next day, abandoned along Interstate 20.  Sadly, the connection between the car, and her disappearance wouldn't be made for days.  By the time investigators knew what they were dealing with, they were a week behind.  The investigation was flawed, involving mis-identifications, tracking the wrong cell phone and questions about the crime scene which have never been answered.  Twelve years later, her family still wonders what became of their daughter, sister and niece.   What happened to Brandi Wells?  Was she tricked by someone she knew and trusted?  Could a total stranger, posing as a good samaritan have taken advantage of her kind nature or was Brandi dragged into the dark world of human trafficking?  Join host Steven Pacheco as he explores this baffling and heartbreaking case. For more information please visit: https://www.trace-evidence.comhttps://www.patreon.com/traceevidence Social Media:https://twitter.com/TraceEvPodhttps://www.instagram.com/traceevidencepod/https://www.facebook.com/groups/traceevidencepodMusic Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Sources: https://tylerpaper.com/news/local/years-missing-brandi-wells-family-still-searching-for-answers/article_22cd5746-5ebb-11e8-ba77-ab91f3743fdc.html | https://www.facebook.com/BrandiWellsStillMissing/ | http://charleyproject.org/case/brandi-ellen-wells | https://www.easttexasmatters.com/news/local-news/missing-in-east-texas-brandi-wells-11-years-later/711554281 | http://www.kltv.com/story/38802699/mother-of-brandi-wells-speaks-out-on-daughters-disappearance/ | https://disappearedblog.com/brandi-wells/

Born in Los Angeles, Russ Titelman grew up in the hot 50’s musical environment and quickly made contacts which would aid him throughout his long career. The most important of these was Phil Spector. After making his debut as a guitarist on the Paris Sisters’ ‘Be My Boy’ in 1961, Titelman became a full-time member of the Spectors Three- Vocal Trio. After graduating from Fairfax high school, Russ studied drama at Los Angeles City College. He returned to the music industry and with friends recorded a song entitled ‘Just A Little Touch Of Your Love’. Songwriter Barry Mann took Titelman to New York, where he wrote songs for the Cinderellas, Chiffons, Lesley Gore Brian Wilson.  He also arranged for Carole King. In 1964 he joined the Shindig television house band, at which time he also appeared on Righteous Brothers and Phil Ochs sessions. Moving in to film work, he collaborated with Jack Nitzsche on “Village Of The Giants” and “Candy”, before recording ‘Memo From Turner’ with Ry Cooder and Randy Newman for the Mick Jagger film. That soundtrack started Titelman’s 25 year association with Warner Brothers Records. Through his friendship with Lowell George he produced Little Feat’s debut album, but he did not become a full-time staff member at Warners until 1971. He became friend and producer to Randy Newman, and through the 70s worked on projects with James Taylor, Graham Central Station, Rickie Lee Jones and George Harrison. In the early 80s he produced “Stompin At The Savoy” for Rufus and Chaka Khan, and co-produced Paul Simon’s “Hearts And Bones”. He also produced Steve Winwood’s “Back In The Highlife” album, possibly Winwood’s best work. His work with jazz and RB artists has paired him with George Benson, David Sanborn and Patti Austin. From 89-94 he worked with Eric Clapton’s Journeyman, 24 Nights, Unplugged and From The Cradle. He has numerous gold and multi-platinum albums and singles, tech awards, Grammy nominations and 3 Grammy awards: HigherLove-Winwood, Tears in Heaven, Rush and Unplugged-Clapton. Russ is a member of The Jazz Foundation of America, The Tibet House Annual Concert committee and the Friars Club.
