At the heart of The Prophets' vision are “The 24 Essential Supply Chain Processes.” What are they? Find out, and see the future yourself. Click here The automotive supply chain isn't what it used to be. Between shifting global policies, evolving AI capabilities, and the relentless push for sustainability, the pressure is on. And if you're not thinking ahead, you're already behind. But Martinrea is ahead of the curve, and in this episode, Megan Hunter, Executive VP of Procurement and Supply Chain Operations, explains how.One of the biggest game-changers? AI. Forget spending hours digging through Google for the right supplier. AI-powered tools now make instant supplier recommendations, cut through the noise, and even challenge old-school procurement tactics. But AI isn't perfect—Megan shares the hidden risks that supply chain leaders must watch out for. Then there's supplier transparency, a topic everyone talks about but few have mastered. Why? Because transparency isn't a tech problem—it's a trust problem. Megan reveals the reality of deep-tier supplier mapping, the struggle to get reliable data, and the cultural shift needed to make transparency a reality. And let's talk about sustainability—not as a checkbox, but as a game-changing strategy. At Martinrea, it's not just about the planet; it's about saving millions. Localized sourcing? 300,000 fewer miles traveled. Smart packaging? Less waste, lower costs.Of course, none of this works without the right people in place. However, the auto industry faces a massive talent gap. Megan's solution? Don't wait for talent—build it. Martinrea is launching an industry-first supply chain apprenticeship program, pulling in fresh talent from the ground up and training them in everything from procurement to AI-driven analytics. And if you're feeling overwhelmed by all of this? Megan's advice is simple: start with quick wins. Instead of getting stuck in the complexity, take immediate, tangible steps to drive change.Themes discussed in this episode:How Martinrea is using AI to streamline supplier searches and procurementThe biggest challenges in supplier transparency and why trust is the missing linkWhy sustainability is not just good for the planet but a cost-saving strategyThe role of zero landfill initiatives in Martinrea's waste reduction effortsWhy real supply chain transformation requires cultural shifts, not just technologyHow Martinrea is addressing the supply chain talent gap with an apprenticeship programThe importance of quick wins in driving supply chain innovation and progressFeatured on this episode:Name: Megan HunterTitle: Executive Vice President Procurement and Supply Chain Operations at Martinrea InternationalAbout: Megan is the Executive Vice President of Procurement and Supply Chain Operations at Martinrea International Inc., a role she has held since December 2019. Manufacturing in Asia: Challenges and Opportunities Beyond China with Jeffrey GoldsteinJoin us for an insightful episode of the Asia Business Podcast where we had the pleasure of interviewing Jeffrey Goldstein, CEO of Onward Global. This episode explores the complexities of supply chain management in China and beyond, providing expert advice and identifying future trends for businesses looking to diversify their manufacturing bases.Connect with Jeffrey GoldsteinVisit Onward GlobalMeet Jeffrey GoldsteinJeffrey Goldstein is an industry leader with 15 years of experience based in China and eight years at the helm of Onward Global. His expertise in managing and scaling supply chain operations for U.S. brands across Asia provides valuable insights for businesses navigating the evolving landscape. The Current State of China's Supply ChainJeff highlights that despite changes, China's supply chain remains competitive due to its diversity, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. However, two macro changes impacting this landscape include:Financial instability within China's economy, leading to factory bankruptcies.A labor shortage due to demographic changes and shifts in young workforce preferences.Goldstein emphasizes the significance for brands to understand the financial health of their suppliers amidst these challenges. The Geopolitical Landscape and China Plus One StrategyWith geopolitical tensions and trade policies affecting sourcing strategies, Goldstein stresses the growing trend of the "China Plus One" strategy. This approach involves maintaining China as a primary manufacturing hub while diversifying production to additional countries to mitigate risks. He notes that while some relocation has occurred, it presents strategic and operational challenges.Emerging Manufacturing HubsJeffrey points out that Vietnam, Cambodia, and India are becoming key manufacturing destinations, each with their strengths and weaknesses. He elaborates on the growing sophistication and diverse capabilities within Vietnam's supply chain, Cambodia's focus on apparel exports, and India's potential despite its domestic-market-focused factories.Risks and Challenges in New MarketsWhile sourcing in these emerging hubs presents opportunities, Goldstein warns of the risks involved, such as the complexities of unknown markets and the challenges of building new relationships. He stresses the importance of applying best sourcing practices, thorough market research, and building local relationships as companies venture into new territories.Best Practices for Successful Supply Chain DiversificationGoldstein advises businesses to practice due diligence, from verifying potential partners and understanding local legal frameworks to engaging with local experts. He emphasizes the need to be realistic in terms of time, cost, and resources required for effective diversification. The Future of Global Supply ChainsLooking forward, Jeff predicts an acceleration of the current trends: reduced capacity in China's manufacturing sector and increased interest in developing supply chains in other Asian countries. For smaller companies, he highlights the importance of starting preparations early to stay competitive amidst these shifts.ConclusionFor more information or to connect with Jeffrey Goldstein, visit Onward Global's website or reach out via LinkedIn.Timestamps00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome00:23 Jeffrey Goldstein's Background and Onward Global01:18 China's Supply Chain Evolution03:59 Geopolitical Tensions and Trade Policies05:08 China Plus One Strategy08:12 Challenges of Sourcing Outside China20:35 Best Practices for Sourcing24:12 Automation and Labor Costs29:29 Successful Supply Chain Diversification35:33 Future Trends and Final Thoughts38:20 Conclusion and Contact Information ProducerJacob ThomasFollow UsLinkedInApple Podcasts

he NRF Big Show Conference 2024, a landmark event across the retail industry, concluded this week in New York City. This year, we decided to attend, and to our surprise, the conference took an unexpected yet critical turn towards sustainability, signaling a significant shift in the industry's priorities. As one of retail's most significant technology-focused events, we were pleased to see the sector locked in on emphasizing minimizing risk, enhancing resilience through ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives, and leveraging technology for operational efficiency. There was much to take in– we were able to take away some compelling insights from the show: ‍ESG and resilience in focus: The conference showcased a solid commitment to ESG principles, emphasizing building resilient supply chains. This shift reflects a growing awareness of the need for sustainable practices in retail.Retail leaders now prioritize sustainability, a notable change given the industry's traditional focus on profit and growth. Technological innovations in supply chain management: A key highlight was using AI and predictive modeling to minimize supply chain disruptions. This approach is not only innovative but also a critical step in ensuring smooth retail operations amidst increasing environmental uncertainties.Technology integration in supply chains paves the way for more efficient and reliable operations, crucial for the retail sector's success. Walmart's pioneering approach to sustainable supply chains: Walmart's session, led by their EVP of Supply Chain Operations and SVP of Sustainability, stood out. They discussed creating value through sustainable supply chains, linking resilience, efficiency, product availability, risk mitigation, and worker opportunities. This session highlighted the practical benefits of sustainable practices regarding environmental impact and business efficiency. Tech-driven solutions for supply chain weather-related disruptions Innovations by major players like IBM and smaller companies in AI-driven predictive modeling for weather-related supply chain disruptions were impressive. These technologies embody the idea of physical risk mitigation, which is crucial for maintaining steady and reliable supply chains in the face of increasing natural disasters and climate change impacts. TCFD and its practical implications: The conference illustrated the practical application of TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) principles in retail. The focus was on building resilience and strategic value creation through climate risk assessment and management.TCFD's framework was implicitly present in the tools and technologies showcased, highlighting the industry's move towards comprehensive climate risk management. Sustainability as a cross-functional priority: The conference wasn't solely aimed at sustainability experts but attracted a diverse group of retail professionals. This diversity underscores the universal importance of sustainability across all retail sectors.Discussions on AI, technology, and supplier engagement in decarbonization indicate a holistic approach to sustainability, integrating it into every aspect of retail operations. The NRF Big Show Conference 2024 marked a pivotal moment for the retail industry, with a clear shift towards sustainability and technological innovation. Adam used a full 24 months to prepare for his transition by attending TAP classes, leveraging LinkedIn and networking . After using The 20-Minute Networking Meeting book as a guide on how to conduct an informational interview, Adam conducted close to 100 interviews. With each conversation, Adam learned more about project management in the private sector, gained new mentors and ultimately confirmed that he did want to pursue project management. His interactions helped him to translate his Army skills to industry standard terminology. As an introvert, networking did not come naturally to Adam. At first, he felt like he was imposing on people but then realized after a few informational interviews that people are eager to help.  Adam reflects on the differences of project management between the military and the private sector. Because rank is not a factor in his current position, it's not always obvious how to get something accomplished. The job of a project manager is to lead cross-functional teams as an individual contributor and yet influence people to meet deadlines and finish projects. Building relationships and having expert knowledge are keys to being a successful project manager.Adam discusses how asking questions has earned him respect with coworkers and supervisors in his post-military roles. He learned that people are eager to help and asking questions builds teamwork, relationships and rapport. Adam encourages veterans to check their ego and stay humble. While some people will show appreciation toward a veteran, others are indifferent. When job searching, many roles do not post a salary range.  Adam discusses how his informational interviews and mentors gained through LinkedIn helped him uncover a desired salary range based on his background and skills. Adam and Lori end the podcast discussing leaving jobs in the private sector, sometimes even in the first year. While Adam acknowledges that finding a job that you are passionate about is ideal, it's not realistic for everybody. He instead encourages people to find jobs that match their skillsets and ones they enjoy in some capacity. When a job isn't right for you, it's okay to find something that is a better fit. Sometimes you have to make a change to move forward. Head over to the Lessons Learned for Vets YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/llforvets22 to hear a bonus clip on struggles and surprises Adam has encountered during his first 18 months out of uniform. You can connect with Adam at https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamcgetz/Explore The 20-Minute Networking Meeting book by clicking here.SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A FIVE-STAR REVIEW and share this to other veterans who might need help as they transition from the military!

1007 Hello, my name is Gina How I went from leading high performing teams to helping CEOs create holistic operations to achieve optimal performance. From age 12, business operations and the people running them fascinated me. I came to corporate leadership early in my career. At the age of 28, I became the youngest female Director of Supply Chain Operations in a Fortune 500 telecommunications company. Did I know what I was doing? Yes and No. I was a highly sought after implementation and process improvement expert and deemed top talent for years, but I knew very little about leading and influencing work through others. I learned to achieve optimal performance the hard way….. by trial and error. In fact, my teams taught me how to effectively create processes AND lead people to implement best in class performance metrics. They showed me how to lead people in a way to maximize their talents and skills and in doing so produce optimized and peak results for the company. It is through my years of hands on experience in studying, working with and leading people, process and massive change in organizations, that I created the D.I.R.E.C.T. framework to help leaders achieve optimal results in their organizations. This is the same process that I used to repeatedly deliver best in class metrics and cost savings for companies in the 10's of millions of dollars. ___________ Want your customers to talk about you to their friends and family? Proudly brought to you in association with S A Partners, a world-leading business transformation consultancy.IntroductionMy guest George Hodgson is passionate about achieving excellence within Supply Chains. He has worked with organisations such as the Royal Australian Air Force, Army, and the United Nations. George is the Vice President of the Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia. Summary - How Lean thinking creates a win-winIn government and supply chains, resources rarely increase, but capacity certainly does. This situation could be seen as a negative and potentially destroy a culture with overburden. But if you can rally that culture and help everyone understand the win-win. Rather than burn out, they can improve their process with Lean thinking: removing waste and increasing flow. Capacity naturally lifts, and stress reduces. People become more accustomed to looking for ways to see and implement improvements-a culture of continuous improvement results. Employees create more time to take pressure off and improve safety, and Leaders achieve results.Quotes07:52min So when you actually apply lean thinking or six sigma to a process, and people can actually see the benefit of doing that, they're just empowered. They go, "This is amazing". So, certainly empowerment of the people who are part of that process. You need to get buy-in from management. And they need to understand why you're going down this path and how it's actually going to add value. And then once you do that, I think the results speak for themselves.12:14min People can actually start to question and go, Why do we do that? How does that add value? Let's take that away and see how that's going to improve. And the beauty of lean thinking, you know, you can do a Kaizen activity. You can do it instantaneously. You know, you start in the morning, by the afternoon you have a new process that you've implemented. Extremely powerful. Key Takeaways1.    Connecting the wins between employees and leaders reduces work pressure, improves safe and quality of work produced.Take away number one is about helping front line employees and leaders connect the wins. In government and many supply chain environments, there is a clear aligned win. Continuously improving to help front line employees reduce work pressure, improve safety and quality of work. Whenever people are overburdened in environments like these quality and safety outcomes are not good. Helping teams in resource-scarce environments develop skills in continuous improvement to eliminate waste and help themselves as well as customers is amazing. The leaders in these environments gain the benefit of less pressure as well as improved results.2.    Training practically and coaching helps develop capability in continuous improvement. The second key takeaway train practically is a great approach. Giving people the training and then some ongoing coaching to help them develop capability in a few key continuous improvement approaches is quite simple. It does not take a lot of time and, when delivered practically helps people bridge the knowing-doing gap quickly and achieving results.Brad is proud to support many Australian businesses. In this mini-series, Robert Martichenko, co-author of Discovering Hidden Profit, recommends which operating principle(s) should be embraced by the core business processes of: Business Strategy, Product Life Cycle Management, Sales & Marketing, and Supply Chain Operations. When establishing Business Strategy, supply chain functions are often not sufficiently involved, resulting in unnecessary complexity and waste. In this episode, Robert will discuss how an organization should view its supply chain as a lever for profitability in top-line revenue growth, reduced operation costs, improved working capital, and margin improvement.
