1990 - March: Michael Penn “March”

What the Riff?!?

Most people are familiar with the actor, Sean Penn.  His older brother, Michael Penn went in a more musical direction, becoming a singer, songwriter, and producer.  His debut album, March, would achieve both critical and commercial success, peaking on the US album charts at number 31.  This would be his most successful album commercially, though his follow-up albums were received positively by the  critics.Manhattan native Michael Penn was the first son of actor/director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan.  He began his musical journey in junior high school, and joined the Los Angeles band Doll Congress before embarking on a solo career.  He appeared as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 1987 when his younger brother Sean was the host.  He would garner attention, however in 1989 with his debut album, March.  It would earn him the 1990 MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, and its first single "No Myth" would rise to number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Michael Penn would go on to marry singer-songwriter Aimee Mann (who fronted the new wave group 'Til Tuesday) in 1997.  The couple are still together and living in Los Angeles.  Rob brings us this singer-songwriter because he has created interesting songs with clever lyrics, and his underrated status may indicate that our listeners haven't heard his music beyond his first single.  We hope you enjoy this artist and perhaps discover some music from the late 80's that you haven't heard before - or haven't heard in a while. No MythThis is the first and most successful single from the album.  It made it to number 5 on the Mainstream Rock charts and number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It is about a guy who is rejected by a girl even though he knows he could make her happy.  “We said goodbye before hello, my secrets she will never know, and if I dig a hole to China I'll catch the first junk to Soho.”Half HarvestThe second song on the album is an understated deeper cut that sounds like a break-up song, or a tune about faded romance. “So move out of your bed of roses, now. I'm putting in a bed of nails.”Brave New WorldThis is a jangle pop, rockabilly song with great harmonies and fast-paced lyrics.  It ends with a jazz jam and we feel it has a road trip feel in the lyrics as the singer drives into the brave new world. This & ThatThis single hit number 10 on the Modern Rock charts, and also has a quick lyric cadence.  “I'll do this and I'll do that, I'll be burning canyons for you.  I'll do this and I'll do that and I will wait forever if you'll be there.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Hymn to Red October (from the motion picture The Hunt for Red October)Sean Connery takes the lead in the first of the Tom Clancy books to hit the big screen.  The idea of a defecting Soviet sub was a compelling concept in the late 80's, well before the communist government fell apart. STAFF PICKS:Cuts You Up by Peter Murphy Bruce's staff pick went to number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, but dominated the then-new Billboard Alternative Songs chart, spending seven weeks at number 1 on that chart.  Peter Murphy was the lead singer of the group Bauhaus, which gave us the song “Bela Lugosi's Dead.”  Murphy and guitarist Paul Statham wrote this song which is about how the path of self-knowledge and discovery will ruin your assumptions, keeping you from getting arrogant.I Go to Extremes by Billy JoelLynch reminds us that things tend to go awry when musician Billy Joel writes a song for his wife.  Indeed Joel's relationship with Christie Brinkley would come to an end in 1994 after it inspired this song that was a single from his album Stormfront. The idea of this song is a recognition that Joel can be compared to a roller coaster of emotion.  Up All Night by Slaughter Wayne brings us a hair band hit from the peak of “big hair.”  Las Vegas, based Slaughter is named after vocalist and guitarist Mark Slaughter who formed the band in 1988 with bassist Dana Strum.  The band is completed by guitarist Tim Kelly and drummer Blas Elias.  The song is pretty much the anthem of the hair bands - up all night, sleep all day. Baby, It's Tonight by Jude Cole Rob finishes the staff picks with singer-songwriter, manager, and producer Jude Cole.  He has a sound similar to John Waite, and started with the band Lifehouse.  Cole also started a record label called Iron Works with actor Kiefer Sutherland.  This song made it to number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. COMEDY TRACK:As Kosher As They Wanna Be  by 2 Live Jews Oy Vey!  I hope we don't get cancelled for this comedy track which was on the charts at the time.

Tiempos modernos en los que se cantaban canciones de menos de 3 minutos con influjo de la rebeldía punk, pero sobre todo del pionero, gran antecedente, Buddy Holly y de la invasión británica de los años sesenta.: The Beatles, The Kinks, The Hollies. Y aquella ola americana se confirmó con figuras como Marshall Crenshaw, Josie Cotton, Fotomaker, Hawks, The Motels, Blondie o Code Blue, cuya gira española reciente ha sido todo una éxito. EPISODE 24 - EXTERNAL Version for Non-Spotify Listeners! LIFEHOUSE Jason Wade: Singer/songwriter/guitarist/piano Rick Woolstenhulme: Drums Bryce Soderberg: Bass “And we turn it inside out/To take it back/To the start.” “Who We Are” With the release of Lifehouse: Greatest Hits on Universal Music Enterprises, a chronological collection of the band's 18 hit singles and best songs, this year marks a time for the band to look back on a remarkably successful career. Founded in 1999 by singer/ songwriter/guitarist Jason Wade in suburban Los Angeles while still in his teens as Blyss, Lifehouse has forged a path that most bands only dream about, topping the charts, having hit songs all over the radio, sharing the stage at arenas with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam and Matchbox Twenty. Since bursting on to the scene in 2000 with their hit debut, No Name Face – which sported the chart-topping Modern Rock-turned Hot 100 #2 hit, “Hanging by a Moment” – Lifehouse has released seven albums that have cumulatively sold more than 15 million around the world, spawning a string of multi-format airplay hits like “You and Me”, “First Time”, “Whatever It Takes” and “Halfway Gone”, the latter four co-written by Wade with collaborator Jude Cole. Having taken some time out after the release of 2015's Out of the Wasteland, Lifehouse's three members have dedicated themselves to individual pursuits. Recently signed to Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Wade has devoted himself to writing, releasing 40 songs that have never previously been available- one a week on the Internet. Bassist Bryce Soderberg now fronts his own band Komox (named after his Canadian hometown), while drummer Rick Woolstenhulme moved with his wife to Arizona to pursue online session work from his recording studio. “Radio has changed dramatically in the last few years, so it's a nice change to be off that treadmill,” admits Wade, the son of missionaries who traveled to various countries, including Hong Kong before returning to the Pacific Northwest and then the West Valley of L.A., where he turned to songwriting to cope with a “traumatic” adolescence. “We feel a profound gratitude to be able to get to this point,” echoes Soderberg, who joined the band in 2004 in time to play on 2005's Lifehouse album. “That we can celebrate our accomplishments with a new tour and Greatest Hits record makes this an amazing time for us.” https://lifehousemusic.com/ @addtomyplaylistpodcast on all social platforms https://truemediasolutions.ca/add-to-my-playlist podcast presented by True Media Solutions

“Coup De Main” The category of “Things That Jude Cole Does" is pretty crowded because Jude Cole does a lot of things. A singer/songwriter, a guitarist, a band manager, a producer, a music critic, a record label founder, and a businessman—Jude Cole is a busy dude. The Illinois-born musician got his start playing in Moon Martin and the Ravens in the late 70s. In 1980 he joined the English band The Records and played on the Crashes album as well as touring with them all over Europe. After leaving the Records, Cole got his solo career going and he quickly knocked out a series of perfect pop albums like A View From 3rd Street and Start The Car. He put his solo career on hold to both manage and co-write songs for Lifehouse, then in 2003 he and Kiefer Sutherland formed Ironworks Studio and Records, signing artists like Ron Sexsmith and honey honey. He also recorded interview segments for Extra, where he interviewed The Rolling Stones and Bob Seger Over the years he's collaborated with Dave Edmunds, Rhett Miller of the Old 97s, Beth Orton, Styx and Peter No-one. So yeah, Jude Cole is a busy guy. What's he got going on lately besides a lot? Well, he's got two new albums—Coolerator, which is comprised of doo-wop covers from the '50s and Coup De Main, an album that reminds us why Cole is one of the most talented and riveting songwriters on the planet. Filled with acoustic numbers, mid-tempo rockers, breezy '70s pop and an infectious synth-tinged number, Coup De Main is a poised and hook-laden collection that's catchy, affecting and unforgettable. In this chat, Cole talks to Alex about playing the banjo, why not everyone is a champion and what it was like to be a young man in a band in England in 1980. www.judecole.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

When singer/songwriter Jude Cole was on the scene from the mid 80s to the mid 90s you knew you were listening to someone special. His ability to marry hooks and harmonies in a rock, bordering on Americana, tradition (think of someone like Aimee Mann) put him above the rest. But, after four strong albums and some moderate hits, he decided to change his focus to artist management, even discovering successful acts like Lifehouse. After 20 years of being on that side of the business, Jude is back this year with two (!) excellent new albums, Coup De Main and Coolerator. Here we talk about his various experiences, brushes with McCartney, 80s movie soundtracks, and more. Rediscover this hugely talented artist!  www.judecole.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jude Cole over Zoom video! JUDE COLE is a simple but driven man. Throughout his long and storied career, he's worn many a creative hat, whether it be as a singer, songwriter, guitarist/sideman, film composer, producer, manager or even a stint as music critic and interviewer to acts like The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger and dozens of other superstars. His first love, songwriting, remains steadfast and true, which is why he's releasing his first new music in 21 years. “I never wanted to bookmark myself,” he explains. “I really do enjoy creating new music, and I don't care to look back all that much. I have the Gold and Platinum records in my tank, but I don't hang them on the walls. I don't always like to look at past achievements — I prefer right now and a little of what's next. I spent the last 22 years managing artists like Jason Wade and Lifehouse and being a very behind-the-scenes writer, producer and manager. For me, these two new solo projects allow me to do what I've always done creatively, but with a new ability to actually stand back and appreciate it.” To that end, he's most definitively moved the artistic needle forward with the contents of his two most recent solo releases. COUP DE MAIN shines the spotlight on COLE originals that showcase his multi-genre mastery, while COOLERATOR brings a modern-day retro-cool vibe to a score of doo-wop favorites both classic and under-served. COUP DE MAIN encompasses a variety of styles, from the opening mid-tempo gambit of “Taking Away My Home” to the acoustic and ethereal lament of “Only Far Away” to the progressive swing of “Wax Wings.” COLE displays some formidable forward-leaning, atomically inspired chops on “The Dark,” which soars into the heart of the stratosphere with a generous cosmic assist from acclaimed fellow producer/artist, Patrick Leonard. “We've been friends and very close neighbors for a long time, and he would literally walk his small synth down to my studio and plug in,” details COLE. “He did all the synth work on this song, and I think it's one of the reasons it sounds the way it does. Patrick knew that's what I was going for — and since he even produced Pink Floyd, he nailed it. He's a wonderful, wonderful musician. I can't say enough about him.” Not only that, but Lifehouse drummer Ricky Woolstenhulme, Jr. gave COLE and Leonard all the space they needed on “The Dark” to really stretch things out. “I asked Ricky to listen to some specific Pink Floyd records,” he reveals. “I mean, Nick Mason plays everything so painfully simple. He allows all the moving parts to do their job because he's not in the way. Rick took all that to heart. He gave us a consistent bed of ride cymbal, kick and snare, topped with a few timeless drum fills. It really was fun to emulate that '70s sound.” “They furnished off an apartment with a two room Roebuck saleThe Coolerator was crammed with TV dinners and ginger aleBut when Pierre found work the little money comin' worked out wellC'est La Vie say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell”-Chuck Berry Meanwhile, over on another sonic fulcrum, COLE gets to celebrate his pure doo-wop jones on the aforementioned COOLERATOR. Bear witness to his loving take on The Charts' rare gem “Deserie” (“one of the most beautiful doo-wop songs ever”), the twangy Chuck Berry/Rockpile vibes of “Dear Dad,” and the horn-supported rock & stroll of Guitar Slim's “It Hurts to Love Someone (When They Don't Love You).” This collection has been a long time coming. “COOLERATOR is a piece of work that's been over ten years in the making — and it's not any sort of epic work you would think would take me ten years,” he says with a hearty laugh. “It was really just a pet project in between a lot of other hats, inspired by the true heart and soul of '50s and '60s doo-wop music.” The overall intention for COOLERATOR was to keep it simple and look for the right performance, “I always wondered how they made those records and why are they so soulful… why they're so moving. When you hear about '50s music, it's often bobby socks and malt shops. I know that's part of the Americana culture, but it doesn't really reflect the groups that were singing on the street corners.” The fact is, JUDE COLE is a career artist who's always looking at the next creative signpost up ahead, with nary a glance back in his rearview mirror. And with Chuck Berry as his COOLERATOR guide and inspiration, C'est la vie —it goes to show you never can tell how blues, rock, rhythm, and jazz will all come together to join him on whatever artistic roads he plans to travel down next.We want to hear from you! What the Riff?!?

Roger Waters is one of the best known rock celebrities, both as a founding member of Pink Floyd and as a solo artist after leaving the band.  Amused to Death is his third solo album, and Waters considers it to be a continuation of The Wall.  The name is inspired by the book "Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Neil Postman.  The concept of the album is a television where the channels are continually being changed at random by an ape, and critiques the senseless obsession with T.V.Waters had been politically critical for some time before this album, and he continues that critique as he examines the glamorization of war, greed and egotism, and the dumbing down of nearly everything through media and bureaucracy.  For this effort, Waters would be joined by a strong cast of session talent, including future American Idol Judge Randy Jackson, Jeff Porcaro, Patrick Leonard, and guitar virtuoso and Yardbirds alumni Jeff Beck.  Waters also went with a more streamlined approach to the album, utilizing "real people playing real instruments," as he told the Los Angeles Times.  Amused to Death would be Waters last solo work for a long time, as the album "Is this the Life We Really Want?" would not appear for almost 25 years.  Amused to Death is a great an underappreciated album, and we hope you will listen to it in its entirety as an excellent post-Pink Floyd concept. Perfect Sense, Part 1This song is about a world where live transmissions of wars are viewed as entertainment.  With the freshness of the Gulf War from the previous year in mind, Waters had a solid basis for this view of the world.  "The monkey looked up at the stars and thought to himself, memory is a stranger, history is for fools." The Bravery of Being Out of RangeAnother song influenced by the Gulf War, Waters found it laughable that the use of cruise missiles and long-range attacks would be considered noble or courageous.  This track hearkens back to older Pink Floyd albums, and specifically references the song "Sheep" from the 1977 album "Animals."Amused to DeathThe title track utilizes a lot of sound effects and clips.  The song mirrors the Neil Postman book, in chronicling an alien species who comes to earth after the human race has gone extinct before our time.  Humanity died out by focusing on television entertainment rather than more important things, and literally amused itself to death.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Would? by Alice In Chains (from the motion picture soundtrack “Singles")This Cameron Crowe dark comedy featured a veritable plethora of grunge artists on the soundtrack. STAFF PICKS:Constant Craving by k. d. langRob brings us a softer and melancholy staff pick from lang's second solo album.  The video for this song takes it inspiration from the Samuel Beckett play "Waiting for Godot."  k. d. lang drew initial inspiration from Country music legend Patsy Cline.  This song was her biggest U.S. hit, going to number 38 on the charts. Dizz Knee Land  by DadaWayne goes alternative with his staff pick.  The song was inspired by a marketing promotion that Disney used at the time, having sports stars saying, "I'm going to Disneyland!" right after a big win.  Instead of highlighting big wins, the lyrics are "I just robbed a grocery store," or "I just tossed a fifth of gin," or "I just flipped off President George - I'm going to dizz knee land."Start the Car by Jude ColeBruce features the opening and title track from singer/songwriter Jude Cole's third solo album.  The lyrics are a declaration that this city is no place to be, and that it is time to leave.  The bluesy heartland feel is a nice departure from the grunge music which was in ascendance at the time.Do I Have to Say the Words? by Bryan AdamsBrian's pick is the fifth single release of Adam's album "Waking Up the Neighbors."  The song was originally titled "Rescue Me," but Mutt Lange changed the name, slowed the song, and added a new chorus to transform the song into a ballad.  The song was a hit, rising to number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and to number 2 in Canada.   COMEDY TRACK:Smells Like Nirvana by Weird Al YankovicThe prolific prince of parody turns his sights on the founding fathers of grunge as we close out this week's podcast.

W/C 2nd August 2021 I rediscovered an album I listened to a lot in the early 90's by an artist called Jude Cole. It's fairly straight ahead AOR, with more than a nod toward Bryan Adams & Tom Petty - but it's very well put together and the songs stand the test of time. So as I was contemplating a bit of a road trip this week, I thought that this track would be a nice way of joining some dots. So you can imagine my bemusement when I found that Keifer Sutherland had recorded a version a couple of years back. Anyway it turns out that Jude & Keifer are old mates, and he in fact co-wrote the song in question. Who knew. Anyway I have included both versions so you can make your on mind up. We are back in the third week of the EM Student summer break, so we are bringing back an episode from October of last year called Systems Thinking. Dan Scott interviews Dr. Steve Jensen and Dr. Shirley Feldmann-Jensen, professors at CSU Long Beach, in the Emergency Services Administration Master's degree program. We aired an interview with one of their colleagues, Jude Cole, a few weeks ago so you'll have heard a bit about the program before, but Dr. Jensen and Dr. Feldmann-Jensen are able to add more information about the program and its curriculum, so be sure to tune in!Resources: CSU Long Beach, ESA Masters degree: https://www.cpie.csulb.edu/courses/master-of-science-in-emergency-services-administration Searching for Safety by Aaron Wildavsky: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2132063.Searching_for_Safety Core Competencies document: https://training.fema.gov/hiedu/docs/emcompetencies/final_%20ngcc_and_measures_aug2017.pdf Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/em-student Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/emweeklyTwitter: https://twitter.com/EM_Weekly Website: https://sitchradio.com/shows/em-student/ Email: franzi@emweekly.comAdvertisers:Mid-Atlantic Center for Emergency Management: https://macem.org/Home.aspx

As we mentioned during last week’s episode, EM Student is going on hiatus while busy researching and recording new episodes for you! For this week’s episode and the next five weeks, we are re-airing episodes from the EM Student archive. I’ve gone through and listened to all of the episodes I could get my hands on and have chosen ones that I think you’ll find interesting and helpful. The episode that I am featuring today is called The National Response Framework, and it aired in September of last year. I chose this episode as the first in this curated series because Dan Scott interviews professor Jude Cole. Professor Cole has a wealth of knowledge and experience in emergency response and emergency management, having worked in these fields for over 40 years. Her resume is impressive and extensive, but both she and Dan cover all of the amazing work that she has done in her career, so I will leave it to them to go into detail during the episode!During her interview with Dan, Professor Cole provides a rich history of Emergency Management in the United States, explains how it parallels her own career and the development of the National Response Framework, and describes the impacts that she has been directly involved with to help shape and guide Emergency Management planning in the US.She also gives an overview of the master's degree program that she is a part of at CSU Long Beach, where students can earn a master's degree in Emergency Services Administration. If you consider pursuing a higher-ed degree in emergency management, pay special attention around 9 minutes into the interview for more information. The program is based in California but has been online for 10 years to accommodate students from other locations and time zones. One other note, the episode about the under-representation of women and people of color in the EM field that Dan mentions at the beginning of the episode and that Professor Cole mentions during the episode will appear again in a few weeks, so keep your eye out. It should come as no surprise that one of the hardest working frontmen in rock—a Guinness World Record holder for not only the most shows played in one day (21), but the most in 50 days (100)—is as active behind the scenes as he is onstage. You know Jesse James Dupree as the unhinged, chainsawwielding leader of southern rock staples Jackyl, but over the last decade he's steadily built a multimedia empire under the more-than-appropriate moniker of Mighty Loud. After a variety of successful, high-profile ventures in marketing, consulting and television production, Mighty Loud will launch its record division with new releases from Powerman 5000 and Jesse James Dupree and Dixie Inc. Mighty Loud has been a versatile player in the entertainment industry long before this most recent extension. Their marketing division creates branding opportunities for Crunk!!! energy drink, Zippo lighters, the Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis, SD, and Jesse James' America Outlaw Beer, a whole-wheat non-filtered brew. Mighty Loud also performs consulting duties for no less than three record labels: •Ironworks (established by Kiefer Sutherland and Jude Cole), •1720 Entertainment, featuring Rissi Palmer and pop band C-Side, and •New West, well-known for Dwight Yoakam, Kris Kristofferson, the Live From Austin, TX series and much more. In addition to managing Jackyl, Dupree is also the executive producer and creator of the smash MTV series Two-a-Days, as well as numerous pay-per-view specials (including Sturgis Exposed and Mardi Gras Exposed). The conglomerate also has two feature films and a comedy show in development, and is responsible for the Dirt Poor Comedy Tour. Lest you worry about Dupree overextending himself, don't. “If I'm not split into a million pieces, I'm not happy,” he concludes. “I always made a connection with the guy I saw on television who was spinning plates with a stick. There's something that would intrigue me about that. Although I can't spin a plate on a stick for nothing, I can damn sure do it in a proverbial sense." #Jackyl #Slackermorningshow101thefox #JesseJamesDupree
