Why? It’s the question that draws so many of us to true crime. Why would someone kill? What drives a person to stalk? Are some people truly evil? Are good people capable of terrible things? We grapple with these questions, trying to make sense of the unimaginable. Is it their childhood? Their biology? Or something more complex? These aren’t just the questions we ask. Detectives, forensic psychologists, and criminal behaviour analysts have spent lifetimes trying to understand the minds of those who commit the unthinkable. In this episode, you'll hear from these experts. Crime Insiders is hosted by Brent Sanders and Kathryn Fox. Guests in this episode include Ricky Hennessy, Professor Troy McEwan, and Julia Cowley. On June 30, 2010, Phil DiMartino, a beloved colleague and friend, left his office in San Fransisco to go out for the night in the Castro District. He never returned. Days later he was found dead by a worried colleague. When he was found, San Francisco police thought they might have a serial killer on his hands. FBI Profiler Julia Cowley was brought in to profile the unknown subject responsible for his murder. His murder, which includes notes from the killer and a voluminous amount of DNA, remains unsolved for inexplicable reasons. A ransacker stalked a small city in California, breaking into 120 homes in 20 months. Two hundred and twenty miles away, three years later, a man committed 50 home-invasion rapes. Three years after that and 300 miles to the south, a series of at least 11 murders occurred. Former FBI Profiler Julia Cowley, the host of The Consult podcast and lead profiler on the case, joins us to discuss the man who would be linked to the seemingly dissimilar crimes, Joe DeAngelo, who turned out to be the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, the Original Nightstalker and a one-man machine of terror now known as the Gold State Killer. Julie talks about how law enforcement was able to connect each of those sets of crimes and identify the former mechanic and police officer, DeAngelo, who is now serving 12 life sentences.Join our community on Facebook, The Silver Linings Fireside Chat:https://www.facebook.com/groups/1361159947820623/To support the podcast and get early and ad-free episodes and exclusive content, join our Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/TheSilverLiningsHandbookTo check out The Consult podcast on Patreon:https://patreon.com/theconsultpodTo check out The Consult podcast episodes on Joe DeAngelo:Profiling Joe DeAngelo, Part 1:https://www.truecrimeconsult.com/profiling-joe-deangelo-part-1/Profiling Joe DeAngelo, Part 2:https://www.truecrimeconsult.com/profiling-joe-deangelo-part-2/Profiling Joe DeAngelo, Part 3:https://www.truecrimeconsult.com/profiling-joe-deangelo-part-3/

Can you believe this is the 16th episode of our investigation into LaDonna Humphrey—a story that, honestly, I didn't think would last this long. But here we are. Now, if you've followed along, you know this has been a wild ride. LaDonna, once a respected figure in the true crime community, has become the center of some truly shocking accusations. Stealing evidence from the Fort Smith Police Department? Allegations of harassment? Manipulating people for her own gain? It's been hard to keep up, even for me. In this episode, we'll get a little help trying to make sense of it all. I brought in retired FBI profiler Julia Cowley—yes, the Julia Cowley, the one who worked on the Golden State Killer case. She will help us break down LaDonna's behavior and explain why someone might go to such extreme lengths to control others. You might be surprised by some of the parallels she draws between white-collar criminals and more violent offenders. We're also going to revisit some of the disturbing messages that LaDonna has allegedly sent to her victims. And I'll share some new evidence we've uncovered—evidence that links multiple harassing messages to a phone number connected to LaDonna herself. It's the kind of proof that, quite frankly, is hard to ignore. But here's what makes this episode different: today, we're not just looking at the past. We're asking what's next for LaDonna Humphrey. With court cases, potential criminal investigations, and a growing list of accusers, is the end finally near for her? Or is this just another chapter in a never-ending saga? Throughout the 1970s and 80s, an unidentified man terrorized families across California. Responsible for more than 100 burglaries, over 50 rapes, and at least 13 homicides, the suspect was dubbed the "Golden State Killer." For decades, law enforcement worked tirelessly to uncover the identity of the murderer. In 2018, justice was served when former police officer Joseph DeAngelo was finally arrested at 74 years old. Retired FBI Agent and lead profiler on the Golden State Killer case Julia Cowley shares how she was brought onto the case, the work that went into creating Joseph DeAngelo's profile, and how her work played a pivotal role in the investigation. Julia Cowley served as a Forensic Scientist and Special Agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Upon joining the FBI, Julia was assigned to the Boston Division where she investigated various violent crime cases and later rose to become the leader of their Evidence Response Team. In 2010, she was promoted to FBI Headquarters, where she worked in their Behavioral Analysis Unit. Follow Emily on Instagram: @realemilycompagno Learn more about your ad choices. The role of the criminal profiler fascinates me more than any other in law enforcement and Julia Cowley was certainly one of the best to ever hold the position. She profiled the Golden State Killer case and obviously many more high-profile cases so she's here to talk about those, to explain exactly what a profiler does and to share her new podcast The Consult which is stacked with an entire crew retired profilers.
On February 2, 2012, 18-year-old Samantha Koenig was reported missing from her place of employment, a coffee stand in Anchorage, Alaska. Security camera footage obtained by investigators showed she was abducted the night before as she prepared for closing. Several weeks later, after Israel Keyes was arrested for Samantha's murder, investigators learned of his connection to the disappearance of Lorraine and William Currier in June 2011. Listen as retired FBI profilers Julia Cowley, Angela Sercer, Susan Kossler Drew, and Bob Drew continue to profile Keyes. Part 2 of 3. Music by John Hanske.
