June 23, 1996. Boston, Massachusetts. The dismembered upper body of 20-year old Karina Holmer is found inside a plastic trash bag in a dumpster. She was strangled to death before being sliced directly in half and the lower portion of her body is never recovered. Karina hails from Sweden and has spent the past three months working as an au pair for a married couple and she was last seen partying at a nightclub nearly 36 hours before she was found. Even though the investigation looks at a number of potential suspects, there is no evidence to implicate anyone. On this week's episode of “The Path Went Chilly”, we explore a brutal unsolved crime which has often been described as Boston's version of the Black Dahlia murder. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Boston Police Department Unsolved Homicide Unit at (617) 343-4470 or the CrimeStoppers tip line at 1-800-494-TIPS (8477).Support the show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcoldAdditional Reading:https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/06/22/metro/who-killed-karina-holmer-twenty-five-years-later-swedish-nannys-grisly-murder-remains-unsolved/https://www.bostonherald.com/2022/03/30/from-the-archive-body-identified-as-swedish-nanny-karina-holmer/https://www.masslive.com/boston/2021/06/karina-holmer-cold-case-boston-police-seek-new-leads-in-brutal-1996-murder-of-20-year-old-swedish-au-pair.htmlhttps://www.newspapers.com/image/441014499/https://www.newspapers.com/image/546676252/https://www.newspapers.com/image/441015411/https://www.newspapers.com/image/441016075/https://www.newspapers.com/image/441016594/https://www.newspapers.com/image/440995729/https://www.newspapers.com/image/441018223/https://www.newspapers.com/image/441071148/https://www.newspapers.com/image/441516425/https://www.newspapers.com/image/441527386/https://www.newspapers.com/image/441855310/https://www.newspapers.com/image/441089022/

Before we dive in, I want to encourage you to learn more about Brady Holmer and his work. He's the founder of the Physiologically Speaking newsletter and editor of Run Long, Run Healthy. You can also check out his e-book, VO₂ Max Essentials, which breaks down one of the most important health metrics we discuss in this episode. Here are the links: Physiologically Speaking: https://bradyholmer.substack.com Run Long, Run Healthy: https://www.runlongrunhealthy.com VO₂ Max Essentials e-book and website: https://www.bradyholmer.com/ Now, onto the episode... Hi everyone. I'm Barbara and this is Age Better. We often focus on numbers like weight, cholesterol, or blood pressure—but what if there were two other numbers that could give you a much clearer picture of how well you're aging? In this episode, I talk with physiologist and science communicator Brady Holmer about VO₂ max and heart rate variability, or HRV—two powerful, science-backed metrics that most of us were never taught to track, but absolutely should. VO₂ max reflects your aerobic capacity and overall cardiovascular fitness, while HRV measures how well your body recovers from stress. The best part? You don't need to be a marathon runner to improve either of these—and they can be key indicators for longevity, resilience, and quality of life. Whether you're new to exercise or already walking and lifting regularly, this episode will give you a better understanding of how to stay strong, mobile, and fit as you age. As Brady says in our conversation, “Walking is an underrated health hack.” And I couldn't agree more. Take a listen—and don't forget to follow the show so you never miss an episode. If you're enjoying Age Better, I'd be so grateful if you left a quick review wherever you listen. And if there's a topic or question you'd love for me to cover in a future episode, send me a note at agebetterpodcast@gmail.com. I love hearing from you. Learn more about your ad choices. Creatine is now one of the most hyped supplements with promises of faster recovery, leaner muscle gain, and even increased strength and power. But should distance runners consider adding it to their routine? Is it worth the benefits while considering its drawbacks. Brady Holmer is a physiologist, 2:24 marathoner, and author of the Physiologically Speaking and Run Long, Run Healthy newsletters (the latter was previously authored by legend Amby Burfoot). He joins us to discuss: What is creatine and what it does Its benefits (and caveats with those benefits) Potential drawbacks Timing and dosing of creatine Whether it's ultimately worth it for endurance runners You can also follow Brady on X for commentary, new science, and humor. Thank you 2XU! If you haven't tried 2XU technical compression gear, you're missing out. 2XU has been the world leader in performance compression for 20 years, helping runners feel better and recover faster with compression gear that's backed by scientific evidence. Their graduated compression gear is engineered to improve blood flow and performance while speeding recovery. My personal favorites include the Light Speed React half-tights (with tons of pockets for your phone and fuel!) as well as their Ignition Shield tights (for colder weather). Knowing that their gear is engineered for runners by runners and backed by research makes me absolutely love 2XU. Invented by renowned physical therapist Jay Dicharry, MOBO helps you stabilize your stance with an innovative rocker board that's set up on two fins. The design effectively forces you to drive your big toe into the board to improve your stability. I was pretty arrogant going into my first session on the MOBO Board. How hard can it be to balance, right? Well, I was humbled pretty quickly! Even if you're a good runner, better balance, stability, and proprioception is going to help you have a more powerful stride and prevent more running injuries. You'll learn how to improve the efficiency of the kinetic chain from your hip to your big toe. Because as Jay likes to say, it's not just how strong you are, but how well you use that strength. I was recently at a weekend physical therapy workshop (lol I was the only running coach) and learned how important (and rare) this simple movement is. This hardcopy training journal helps you focus on the training metrics that matter, prioritizes a long-term outlook so you don't take any shortcuts, and maintains your motivation with strategic self-praise. With a no-frills, functional design, the Performance Training Journal includes coaching advice on racing, injury prevention, strength training, and more. It will guide you through race scheduling, how to plan your race morning, the best workouts for endurance runners, and encourage you to track your personal bests over time. Brady earned his bachelor's degree (with honors) from Northern Kentucky University and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Florida, where he's researching the effects of exercise and sleep deprivation on cardiovascular health. His other research interests include low-carb/keto diets, intermittent fasting, and how lifestyle can be used to optimize performance, health, and longevity. He's a former Division I collegiate runner and is still an “endurance junkie” who loves to rack up miles on a run or bicycle. Brady spends his free time working on his podcast (Science & Chill) or hanging out with his wife and dog at breweries, where he often plays Scrabble. He also loves reading, but the “unread” section of his bookshelf grows faster than the “read” section. His comfort foods are a spoonful of peanut butter, chili (no beans!), ribeye steak, and dark chocolate (especially when dipped in peanut butter).Examine.comBuy Training Essentials for Ultrarunning on Amazon or Audible.Research Essentials for Ultrarunning: https://www.jasonkoop.com/research-essentials-for-ultrarunningInformation on coaching-https://trainright.com/Koop's Social MediaTwitter/Instagram- @jasonkoop

On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a brutal unsolved crime which has often been described as Boston's version of the Black Dahlia murder. Special thanks to listener Anil Adyanthaya for narrating the opening of this episode. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Boston Police Department Unsolved Homicide Unit at (617) 343-4470 or the CrimeStoppers tip line at 1-800-494-TIPS (8477). "God's Creatures" is the first time filmmakers and frequent collaborators Sales Davis and Anna Rose Holmer share directorial credit on a film. Following their previous film, "The Fits," the duo are one of the most exciting pairs working in the field today, and that continues with this psychological drama that premiered earlier this year at Cannes. Davis and Rose Holmer were kind enough to talk with us about directing the three main performances from Emily Watson, Paul Mescal, and Aisling Franciosi, how much of a vital role sound plays in the film, and what they have coming up next.
