Brady Holmer knows a lot about running and a lot about science: a perfect combo for a conversation on the show. Brady is a lifelong endurance athlete who competed in cross country and track at the collegiate level. He currently works as a science writer and researcher, holding a Master's degree in human performance. He also recently ran his PR in the marathon: a 2:37. In this episode, Brady and I talk about: The flexibility of heart rate zones and their impact on training adaptations Physiology is constantly fluctuating: zones aren't static RPE (rating of perceived exertion) is a valuable metric for runners The 80/20 rule of running: 80% lower intensity and 20% higher Benefits and nuance of Zone 2, Zone 3, and Zone 4 Zone 3 training is complicated, but not pointless When to ignore heart rate during runs Maintaining intensity during hot weather Running in summer heat leading to higher heart rates and increased cardiovascular drift Heat acclimation and its benefits for runners (and also cooler weather benefits) Bike intervals for adaptations and injury prevention Finding optimal running paces You know that friend you have who won't stop talking about Zone 2? Thank you MOBO Board! Invented by renowned physical therapist Jay Dicharry, MOBO helps you stabilize your stance with an innovative rocker board that's set up on two fins. The design effectively forces you to drive your big toe into the board to improve your stability. I was pretty arrogant going into my first session on the MOBO Board. How hard can it be to balance, right? Well, I was humbled pretty quickly! Even if you're a good runner, better balance, stability, and proprioception is going to help you have a more powerful stride and prevent more running injuries. You'll learn how to improve the efficiency of the kinetic chain from your hip to your big toe. Because as Jay likes to say, it's not just how strong you are, but how well you use that strength. I was recently at a weekend physical therapy workshop (lol I was the only running coach) and learned how important (and rare) this simple movement is. Brady earned his bachelor's degree (with honors) from Northern Kentucky University and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Florida, where he's researching the effects of exercise and sleep deprivation on cardiovascular health. His other research interests include low-carb/keto diets, intermittent fasting, and how lifestyle can be used to optimize performance, health, and longevity. He's a former Division I collegiate runner and is still an “endurance junkie” who loves to rack up miles on a run or bicycle. Brady spends his free time working on his podcast (Science & Chill) or hanging out with his wife and dog at breweries, where he often plays Scrabble. He also loves reading, but the “unread” section of his bookshelf grows faster than the “read” section. His comfort foods are a spoonful of peanut butter, chili (no beans!), ribeye steak, and dark chocolate (especially when dipped in peanut butter).Examine.comBuy Training Essentials for Ultrarunning on Amazon or Audible.Research Essentials for Ultrarunning: https://www.jasonkoop.com/research-essentials-for-ultrarunningInformation on coaching-https://trainright.com/Koop's Social MediaTwitter/Instagram- @jasonkoop

"God's Creatures" is the first time filmmakers and frequent collaborators Sales Davis and Anna Rose Holmer share directorial credit on a film. Following their previous film, "The Fits," the duo are one of the most exciting pairs working in the field today, and that continues with this psychological drama that premiered earlier this year at Cannes. Davis and Rose Holmer were kind enough to talk with us about directing the three main performances from Emily Watson, Paul Mescal, and Aisling Franciosi, how much of a vital role sound plays in the film, and what they have coming up next. We hope you will check out the film, which is now playing in theaters and available on demand from A24. Please take a listen down below. Thank you! The win couldn't have come at a better time: it was only one week until 19-year-old Karina was set to leave her small Swedish village in Skillingaryd to travel to the USA. --- Narration – Anonymous Host Research & writing – Jessica Forsayeth Creative direction – Milly Raso Production and music – Mike Migas Music – Andrew D.B.
