We work and grow alongside our coworkers for much of our lives. But how can we maximize that growth by inspiring a sense of community, inclusivity, and belonging in the workplace? In today's episode of IntHerrupt, Linda is joined by FirstLantic Healthcare's Director of Marketing, Karen Gross, to learn how we can foster a better work environment. Everyone feels like they don't “belong” in their workplace at some point. Karen faced low pay, long hours, and high expectations during her time at an advertising agency. While she enjoyed the industry, she knew she wanted more. If you don't feel that necessary sense of belonging, it likely isn't because of you; it's because of the environment. A workplace culture that embraces people is essential to having employees stay, thrive, and grow. Belonging inspires passion for work: If someone is struggling to find passion for their work, it's likely due to these negative feelings. If you are struggling, consult with management or leadership; leadership is there to listen. Creating a sense of belonging: Her company has ‘21 fundamentals' that embrace their values, and new hires are exposed to them from the beginning. Those values are implemented through training sessions. However, belonging can also be as easy as talking to your staff and coworkers as people to inspire a feeling of belonging. A key thing leaders can do is communication. To communicate how their role impacts the organization's vision and how it is valued in their everyday work. Everyone matters. There is not one person in her organization that isn't important to their fundamental work. Everyone is important. A sense of belonging is feeling valued and accepted Part of your group and feeling like you have a voice and feeling like you belong. When that's not present, passion can be difficult to manifest. DEI is an opportunity to revive a workplace culture. Someone listen is likely thinking ‘we don't have the culture.' What can they do for themselves to impact their workplace culture. Even if the culture isn't there, you still have a voice. You should feel confident expressing those emotions and feelings. If you can't express those, you're just kinda doomed. You'll feel miserable! You might think noone wants to hear from you. But you can be shocked what will happen when you speak up and share ideas. A Gallup study found that Engagement is one of the largest indicators of passion. Many people are actively disengaged from their work. How do you keep you and your team engaged in the work? It comes down to being curious. When she's looking to do something different, she's given the mandate to determine something new. Curiosity and tapping into other people and engaging in conversations with people and sharing ideas is critical. If it's a good idea, it's a good idea. Don't be afraid to find new ways to do things. Simultaneously, she was also performing and studying voice, cabaret, and comedy in New York City and Philadelphia. She's been singing since she can remember and performing professionally since graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Wesleyan University. In today's episode Karen shares: Her passion and love for words. So, what is a giraffe's favorite shoe? Answer: Hightops! Just in time for a good summer read for your kids or grand kids is the latest children’s story from long-time educator, and former college president Karen Gross. Her new book, Lady Lucy’s Laugh Giraffe Journey is the latest in her Lady Lucy series. The book is in honor of World Giraffe Day on June 21 st and raises awareness to the plight of giraffes as well as providing some proceeds from the book’s sales to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Gross recently talked with WSIU's Jeff Williams about the book and her effort to help children learn through laughter. You can find out more about the book here . It's World Giraffe Day and Lady Lucy is back to help Giraffe with her Lady Lucy's Laugh Giraffe Journey written by Karen Gross and Marc Wine. Every June 21st is World Giraffe Day and this interview was released on June 21st, 2018 to celebrate the launch of Lady Lucy's latest adventure. This journey is quite different from her last two in that this book is a joke book with many of the jokes written by kids. The story was published as a collaboration with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The foundation also helped to review the book to make sure that its facts were correct. The book is filled with jokes that kids will have fun sharing, especially with their family. It also has several pages of giraffe fun facts and there is a parent-teacher guide to help with using the book as a learning tool. Additionally, Karen is encouraging kids to submit names for the giraffe that are featured throughout the book and there will be an auction of this giraffe collection. The proceeds of the auction will benefit children who cannot afford the books as well as the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Part of the profits of book sales will also be contributed to GCF. The book is colorful and fun! Kids are sure to get a kick out of the many wonderful jokes. I'm sure adults will chuckle right along with the kids. I had fun talking with Karen about Lady Lucy's Laugh Giraffe Journey and I think you will enjoy listening and reading the book. Happy World Giraffe Day - June 21st. Enjoy! Lady Lucy's Quest is the first in a series of children's books written by Karen Gross. In this story, Lady Lucy wants to be a knight but the odds are stacked against her. She has to show endurance, strength, and courage. Karen shares that the story is really about "believing in the power of the possible and dreaming big." Lady Lucy is a tribute to a real life woman - Lady Lucy Duff Gordon who was a fashion designer from the late 1800's and early 1900's. She was one of the first women to advertise in a clothing catalogue. She and her husband - Cosmo - were on the Titanic when it sunk. They make a brief appearance in the James Cameron film from a few years back called - Titanic. On today's episode we talk about Lady Lucy's development, why a children's series, what she hopes readers will take away and who Lady Lucy really is or was. I even ask her if she is Lady Lucy. We also talk about her latest book - Lady Lucy's Dragon Quest and the books that are on the way...Lady Lucy's Unique Unicorn Quest, Lady Lucy's Giraffe Laugh Book, and Lady Lucy's Peace Quest. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Former Senior Policy Advisor at US Dept. of Education Karen Gross. Karen Gross has taught and continues to teach across the educational pipeline. In spring 2016, she will be teaching at Bennington College in Vermont. She writes, consults and advises on how to improve student success and has a forthcoming book from Columbia University Teachers College Press titled Shoulders to Lean On (Publication date: 2016) on this very topic. A former college president and Senior Advisor to the U.S. Department of Education, she currently serves as Senior Counsel to Widmeyer Communications, a Finn Partners Company, and as an Affiliate to the Penn Center for MSI's at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. She blogs/writes for many education outlets including Huff Po, WPo, InsideHigherEd, Unplugged, DiverseEducation, Evollution, NAIS, and CollegeAD. Karen is proud that two high school seniors at the Emma Willard School have so ably illustrated the Lady Lucy story. The book and the process of its creation provide a concrete example of the kind of deep collaboration that can occur in education, where the teacher is a learner, and the learners are teachers. The illustrations, led by Lindsey Slaughter, a gifted art teacher, have made Lady Lucy and the story come alive. The author and the two illustrators and their teacher see Lady Lucy as a symbol of the power of the possible that rests within all of us. Based on the true life of Lady Lucy Duff-Gordon, a leading 19th century fashion designer and survivor of the Titanic, Lady Lucy's Quest brings vigor to the spirit of young girls everywhere. The illustrations contributed by high school students Ji Woo Jasmine Shin and So Young Jang, also shed light on the importance of empowering female youth.
