The Supreme Court today continues to vigorously debate the scope of religious exemptions—which allow individuals or organizations to be exempt from following certain laws that they say burden their religious beliefs—in high-profile cases such as Fulton v. City of Philadelphia (2021). This episode dives into the current and historic debates over religious exemptions in a panel featuring Douglas Laycock, author of the five-volume series The Collected Works on Religious Liberty; Vincent Phillip Muñoz, author of God and the Founders; and Kathleen Brady, author of The Distinctiveness of Religion in American Law. Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, moderates. October 1, 1904. Show up at a newsstand this morning, and you'll see that the October issue of McClure's magazine has hit the shelves. Alongside it, newspapers advertise what's inside: "Ida M. Tarbell renders her final judgment of Rockefeller's Trust." It's the 19th and last installment in a series that has made people sit up and take notice of a powerful monopoly and the man behind it. How did a scrappy reporter take on the richest man in the country? And how, in the process, did she change corporate America and investigative journalism itself?Special thanks to our guests, Stephanie Gorton, author of Citizen Reporters: S. S. McClure, Ida Tarbell, and the Magazine that Rewrote America; Kathleen Brady, author of Ida Tarbell: Portrait of a Muckraker; and Steve Weinberg, author of Taking on the Trust: How Ida Tarbell Brought Down John D. This podcast features Dr. Kathleen Brady and Dr. Sudie Back, two world-renowned, prolific researchers and clinicians who have devoted their careers to studying the complicated interrelationship between PTSD and Substance Use Disorders. People with PTSD are 2 to 5 times more likely to have a Substance Use Disorder and, among people seeking treatment for SUD, 20-60% have PTSD. For years, treatment centers have acted on the myth that we need to treat the patient sequentially...treat the Substance Use Disorder first, then treat the PTSD. Research shows that treating the Substance Use Disorder does not lead to a reduction in PTSD symptoms. Dr. Kathleen Brady and Dr. Sudie Back share the research supporting their successful, widely used COPE MANUAL, a treatment manual that treats both PTSD and Substance Use Disorder concurrently using prolonged exposure under the direction of one trained therapist. The experts engage in a lively discussion regarding the nature of PTSD, the brain changes underlying the disorder, the differences between men and women, how PTSD affects the person's beliefs about themselves and the world around them. Prolonged exposure (imaginal and in vivo) is explained in depth, in addition to coping skills taught by the manual aimed at coping with cravings and relapse prevention. In addition, Dr. Brady discusses some FDA approved medications that may be helpful adjuncts for the person struggling with PTSD and Substance Use Disorder.

Intergenerational conflict has been and will always be an issue in the workplace. But as legal careers grow longer (many attorneys are working well into their 60’s and even into their 70’s), these issues become more pronounced. Simply put, law firms are now home to multiple generations of attorneys. Similarly, with the explosion of digital communication in the last 2 decades, there are larger differences in how younger and older lawyers prefer to communicate. In this episode, Kathleen Brady will be talking about how to navigate these differences. If you are a millennial, what should you expect from your baby boomer bosses? Where is the potential for conflict in how you communicate with partners at your firm. If you are a senior partner, what do you need to know about the younger attorneys in your firm. How can you establish better communication channels with this younger generation. Kathleen Brady is Director of Coaching for Preferred Transition Resources in New York where she provides career transition counseling and outplacement coaching to attorneys. She has 25 years of experience as a certified career/life management coach, author, and educator. Through her work, Kathleen helps lawyers identify and integrate their personal and professional goals. Kathleen began her career counseling law students at two law schools and later, she was responsible for recruitment and professional development at several major law firms. Kathleen is a past president of the National Association for Law Placement and a founding member of the NALP Foundation for Research and Education. In addition to her work as a career counselor, Kathleen is an accomplished author and has published four books about career/life transitions including, GET A JOB! 10 Steps to Career Success (Motivational Press, 2015). She is a frequent speaker at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, Pace Law School’s New Directions Program and the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity. Kathleen has also shared her expertise with Fox News, CNN, NPR, This Week in America, and First Business Report.
Walking through Downtown Spartanburg these days is a feast for the eyes. New buildings and renovated historic icons, new original upscale dining and nightlife options, and a corresponding level of activity that hasn't been seen in decades are the story of our city's core in 2018, and that level of growth and energy shows no signs of waning. The downtown boom isn't just something local bureaucrats push anymore. It's now a very evident reality celebrated daily by organizations and ordinary residents throughout Spartanburg County. But drive just a short distance from that new energy and excitement, and it becomes clear that the larger story of Spartanburg is much more complicated. The legacies of racial and class disparities, flawed public housing strategies from previous generations, persistent educational attainment gaps, and the localized effects of global economic shifts are all around us in Spartanburg. And while all of us applaud the tremendous economic development progress made in our city in recent years and work daily to ensure that it continues, we also understand that there's little benefit from downtown brick and mortar masterpieces to be felt by families that remain mired in the cycle of intergenerational poverty. At a retreat last month City Council heard details about some of our city's challenges of equity, detailed in a report from Dr. Kathleen Brady, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Studies Institute at USC Upstate. In reacting to the sobering look at our challenges laid out in Dr. Brady's report, City Management crafted a set of guiding principles to help us think about how best to approach Spartanburg's most pressing long-term concern. Poverty is the central existential challenge facing the city. We need high-yield, high bang-for-the-buck strategies that boost human capital and raise the prospects for our citizens. We must work in deep partnership with our key partners—it is not just our view of strategies that matters. We must engage and be responsive to partners that can help us reach our goals. Some interventions are best led by the city, others by partners The built environment is important, but no set of physical amenities or community facilities can change the trajectory for a household without a route to self-sufficiency We must leverage non-local money, and to do so, we need a clear understanding of our strategies. Resources follow coherence. We must avoid investing in projects that don’t have a specific human capital impact with quantified outcomes. Today on the podcast, we're talking with Assistant City Manager Chris Story about this list of principles, about why it matters to us as a local government that we take steps to address poverty, and why it ultimately benefits every one of our citizens to live in a more equitable Spartanburg. Listen below for more.
