Turning Towards Life - a Thirdspace podcast

A conversation about meeting one another's 'falling apart', the cultural pressure to stay buttoned up, the fertile potential hidden inside our moments of undoing, and what it means to be a person who can welcome and hold space for another's becoming rather than trying to put the lid back on. How genuine care for another might involve staying faithful to the life inside them, which is something deeper than their current circumstances, their current identity, or the version of them we first fell in love with. This week is hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Sophie Fletcher, PhD, somatic nervous system practitioner and co-facilitator inside Rise Above the Herd, returns to Here for the Truth with a diagnosis for what's quietly running through most of us: functional freeze. It looks nothing like collapse. You're still showing up, doing the work, holding the relationships, but something inside has gone numb, and the modern world is engineered to keep it that way. Sophie traces why the truth-seeker community is especially exposed, how chronic low-grade threat overwhelms the body until there's nowhere left to discharge it, and why mistaking calm for regulated is itself a form of dysregulation. We move through healthy aggression and the safe expression of sympathetic charge, the entanglement of parts work with nervous system state, and what building capacity looks like inside a family carrying a collective nervous system pulse of its own. Slow is fast, Sophie says. The relationship with your own physiology gets built in moments most people are too impatient to honor.(00:00) Regulation Redefined(00:40) Opening Conversation(01:38) Show Start(04:36) Truth Seeker Freeze & Polyvagal Basics(09:12) Functional Freeze Explained(15:29) Modern Life Triggers(22:08) Healthy Nervous System(35:55) From Freeze to Freedom(38:12) Healthy Aggression Outlets(46:30) The Monk Study(51:28) Sympathetic vs Dorsal Types(58:22) Appropriate Response Defined(01:10:03) Repair Self Respect(01:17:21) Nervous System And Parts(01:20:36) Winnie The Pooh Psychology(01:24:39) Shadow And Projection(01:35:19) AI Movie ArchetypesGUEST LINKWebsite — sophiefletcherphd.comCONNECT WITH USStart the Free 7-Day Self-Esteem ResetWatch Our EpisodesJoin our free Telegram communityJoin our membership Friends of the Truth

Parenting a Highly Sensitive Child can leave you exhausted and fried. A lot of parents I work with are holding it all in or gritting their teeth and baring through the day. It can be really difficult to see outside of your self and to take a look introspectively of what it is that you are struggling with as a parent and how to move through that in order to teach your child. Listen on as we discuss critical mistakes parents make in their parenting perspective. In this episode, Didie Kabil affirms doing the best she can is how she and her family are keeping it together. And by that, ‘it' means work and personal life. She shares the story behind the struggle of being retrenched, how she became a Zumba and Salsation fitness instructor and finally put to use the license she obtained a long time ago. Although she feels that being a full-time stay-at-home parent is ideal, the pandemic has made her realize that other challenges arise as the working dynamic and the condition of her lifestyle have changed. The transitions were never easy. The journey to be able to keep everything together is a mode of survival.

It's a tale of a Paralympian fighting to compete and successfully medaling in the 2022 Olympic Beijing Games. For Brenna Huckaby, a 3x Olympic gold medalist, world champion, and cancer survivor, the bronze medal won in 2022 is perhaps the most meaningful. Accordingly to Brenna, the medal represents and encourages those who continue to fight an uphill battle of accessibility and inclusion to keep pushing the glass ceiling. Brenna hopes that her message of strength and resilience inspires those like herself who have fought and are still battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Forever an athlete, Brenna's love for gymnastics translated post-cancer to snowboarding, as she felt that the balance beam's feel was replicated in her new sport. Visualizing her goals by looking to the next mountain to shred, Brenna continued to build upon her skills into what is today a champion status. Brenna's self-proclaimed “Step Out of Line” moment was when she realized that her own self-worth was not based on winning medals and that she alone was enough. Hosted on Acast. Welcome back to the Chaotic Compass podcast! Today, I'm here to simply rant about my chaotic life and I'm hoping that there are some of you out there who can relate. From making sure my kids are organized to business meetings and family drama, I've been struggling lately and I'm really just trying my best to keep it together. It seems as though everything is eating at my last nerve these days and perhaps it's because there are many instances in which I don't feel seen or heard. That's why, in this episode, I'm sharing with you some of the things that have kept me on the go and honestly, quite stressed. This includes helping my sister with her broken-down car, ensuring my kids have what they need for school, and of course doing everything I need to do for our businesses. So these are the reasons why I'm drinking today. I'm drinking the new release from Sly Clyde, Apricot Honey. Keep listening to hear my rant and don't forget to leave a comment on my Facebook, Instagram, or on my website to let me know if you are feeling the same way and if you have any podcast recommendations. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How are you keeping it together?, published by rando2022 on March 6, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Not sure this is the best place to post this, but I think it's a problem a lot of us are having now: Given the recent news, I've been struggling a lot with hopelessness about the possibility of a catastrophic nuclear war. It's become a major impediment to both my mental health and my ability to care about EA causes. I've been thinking of things my family could realistically do in the event that things appear to be moving southward (packing bags and having a plan to getting out of the area if we have enough warning, and planning on ways to end things quickly if we don't). But I'm still pretty horrified at it all and finding it hard to function. Any advice? How do you keep enough hope to keep at it? Thanks for listening. You've worked so hard and for so long to get a deal. Now comes the fun part of ensuring that the deal is able to cross the finish line. That's where bulletproofing the transaction comes into play. We have to ensure that we've set up our transactions in a way that will increase the likeliness of actually getting to a closing. Afterall, we don't get paid for a transaction until it closes. Many agents "sell"ebrate the second they get the contract signed. Getting the contract signed isn't the last step. We have to hold this contract together all the way to the finish line. Let's talk about how we can give our agreements a fighting chance to get to the closing table. Share some of your thoughts on how you've been able to bulletproof your deals or maybe even how you've been able to save a deal from falling apart. We'd love to hear what works for you and what hasn't.
