Good morning! On today’s show Matt Swaim and Anna Mitchell remember the life and witness of Mother Angelica on the 9th anniversary of her passing. Guests include Rita Heikenfeld with more meatless recipe ideas for Lent, Dr. John Bergsma with thoughts on the Jubilee in the Bible, and Courtney Brown from Ruah Woods with reflections on the Theology of the Body. Plus news, weather, sports, and more…***** The Sign of the Cross in Hawaiian Ma ka Inoa o ka Makua, a o ke Keiki, a me ka ‘Uhane Hemolele. ***** Mother Angelica’s Prayer for EWTN May this first Catholic satellite television network be a tribute to the beauty of Your Church. May Your Son, the Eternal Word, be glorified through this great work of Your Hands. Bless all the programs that will issue forth from its facilities. Just as Your Word issues forth from You, Lord Father, may that same Word touch each heart that listens to this network. Let Your Spirit work with freedom through every teacher who proclaims Your Truth and Your Church. Bestow upon this network the power to inspire men to seek holiness of heart, zeal for the extension of Your Church, courage to seek after justice and human rights, and patience to endure persecution. May Your Paternal blessing always rest upon it. Amen. ***** A Baseball Prayer God grant me wisdom, to tell a strike from a ball, to know where to throw and never to fall. Keep me on the baseline, running straight and true and I’ll look for your sign, to stretch one into two. God give me vision, to see every pitch, and if a player needs help, then I will see which. Let me always hustle, so I’ll be at my best and take pride in myself, in sports, and the rest. God be my strength, when I throw the ball when I’m far from home plate or against a wall. So I never miss a base, God, please guide my feet, bring me home safely, so my job is complete. When I help younger players, let me always give praise, so they’ll see You in me, in all my ways. God please guide our coach, to be fair and smart, to teach us to be good, let it come from his heart. Let me take a loss, just as well as a win, to do any less is surely a sin. As long as I play, let me make my parents proud, as proud as I am, when they yell MY name out loud. However my games end, let me always have fun and if Heaven has All Stars, I want to be one. When my games here are over and my seasons are done, let me play on Your team, God, Just like your Son. ***** RECIPES FROM RITA: Chicken Tinga with Lime Crema and Blistered tortillas Ingredients:1 medium yellow or white onion, chopped – 1 good cup2 cloves garlic, minced, or more to taste1/3 cup chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (about 3 peppers)1 teaspoon dried oregano3/4 teaspoon ground cumin, or more to taste3/4 cup fire roasted tomatoes, crushed, or more to taste1/4 to 1/2 cup chicken brothSalt to tasteShredded cooked chicken – about 4 cups8 six inch tortillas, flour or corn Filling InstructionsFilm a skillet with olive oil over medium heat.Add onion and cook until fairly translucent.Stir in garlic and cook a minute or so.Stir in chipotles in adobo. Start with half of the amount, and then after cooking, add more if you like since these are pretty hot.Add oregano, cumin, tomatoes and broth. Start with 1/4 cup broth and add more at the end if mixture is too thick. Bring to a boil, then to a simmer and cook about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.Pour mixture into blender. Careful now, mixture is hot and tends to spatter upwards. I place a paper towel on the top. Blend until smooth.Taste and add more chipotles in adobo if you like.Put blended sauce back into the pan, then stir in chicken and cook over low heat until chicken is hot and well coated, about 5 minutes or so.Add more broth if you like – I usually don’t since we like a thicker Tinga. Tortilla Instructions:Easy peasy: turn burner on stove to medium, then place tortilla on top, turning after a few seconds to blister it a bit. I used flour tortillas but you can use corn tortillas. Don’t linger while blistering the tortillas as they will get dry fairly quick. Lime crema:1 cup sour cream1 cup mayonnaiseChipotles in adobo, to taste (puree first)Lime juice to tasteSalt to tasteChopped parsley – optional Instructions:Just mix everything together. More garnishes:Chopped cabbage, guacamole or avocado, fresh cilantro, green or red onion or onion chives, crumbled Cotija cheese or Mexican blend cheese To serve:Top tortillas with chicken and garnish as desired. Serve with wedge of lime. ***** Brady Stiller, author of Your Life is a Story: GK Chesterton and the Paradox of Freedom Full list of guestsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How can you get in the news with a good news story? How do you catch the attention of the media and how do you show up? Malika Dudley has studied the science of communication and is a TV reporter.  Episode 102 (Malika is based in Hawaii) In this conversation with Malika Dudley we explore: How to get your good news story noticed by the media How to make your offer irresistible How to communicate with the media Why one "No" doesn't really mean "No" How to build ongoing positive relationships with the media How to talk on television in studio or on Zoom About Malika Dudley: Malika is a TV reporter based in Hawaii. She is a multi-award winning journalist with 2 Emmy nominations, a Murrow and multiple SPJ (Society for Professional Journalists) awards. She is host of The Communification Podcast - a podcast that will help you unlock your communication potential and feel less alone in your communication struggles. Visit the podcast here or click image below https://www.communificationpodcast.com/ This is Malika's second appearance on Your Intended Message. You can listen to her first appearance in episode 82. Here's an example of a good news story done well. Malika interviews community volunteer, Kaimana Brummel, talking about "Kaukau 4 Keiki" a food share program for children when they are not in school. Notice how well Kaimana conveys her message. https://www.kitv.com/news/local/urgent-need-for-volunteer-delivery-drivers-to-feed-maui-countys-hungry/article_422fc328-60fe-11ec-a0c3-cf510670aeab.html   Excerpts from this conversation with Malika Dudley 02:48 Probably the newscast that you're going to identify and try to get on would be the morning show, instead of the evening show. Morning shows are longer. Number one, they are more fluid. And they allow for that good news to kind of work its way into the forecast. Every newscast wants to also have good news.   03:13 If you're trying to get into an evening newscast, you're trying to get in the kicker, probably. So that's the last little tidbit that gets shown right before they say goodbye. And usually it's something light and fun to kind of wrap up the show and not leave people with that bad taste in their mouth of the everything is doom and gloom. It's the universe, the kids from the University of Hawaii, that won in Las Vegas with their driverless remote control car. So it's something that is intriguing, but not necessarily a new story, but can be fun.  Oh, that's cool. You kind of want to be in that category of, Oh, that's cool. If you're going for the evening newscasts, it would be something small like that. So there are several different things that you can do. One thing is make it easy for us. How do you make it easy for the reporter or the producer or the anchor to have you on the show? One way is to offer up your party's as something that you can link this to current events. So what's going on right now? And how can you help someone to solve that problem? And this is something that you've thought about a lot. All business leaders do. So you probably already know the answer to that question. So let's say that you're a Life Consultant, and it happens to be January. Send out your press release and explain the things that you would be able to say on the air. Now keep in mind that you're probably going to get, at most three minutes of time. So a three minute interview. So you don't want to overwhelm the press release with all the things, you know, you want to give them bullet points. So get good at writing press releases. Here's a paragraph about what I do. Here's what I can tell you on the newscast. Bullet points. Here is a little bit about me and my background, and, and then provide assets. Media assets, like video, headshots, just whatever you think they might be able to use on the newscast, we definitely need visuals. If you're talking about, so let's let's go with that life coach analogy. Here are the five things that you can do to have a great year this year. And you have B roll of one of your coaching clients exercising, right, and that's number one is exercise. So you send them a 15 second clip of you know, someone exercising, sure, we could go through our files and find the B roll video of exercise. ----- 12:37 So if you can get your friends to email the news at whatever the news station email is because that email goes to everybody in the news organization, if you can get your people to email in and say, hey, wow, thank you so much for that segment by data data that this morning, I learned data data data, I would so love to see more of that. It doesn't go on deaf ears. I mean, I can't tell you, if you guys didn't listen to the last podcast that we did, that I did with George, where we talked about 20% of the people love you 20% of the people hate you. And then the ones in the middle are indifferent. The indifferent ones never email the news. The haters do. And the lovers Oh, I wish they did more. And so when we get one of those emails, the news director legit will send that out to everyone and say, Look, guys, we did such a great job. And just know that when you're doing your job, people like Eddie, appreciate it. And so I can't tell you how much that could actually influence whether or not you as this expert. Hopefully you're really good at what you're doing. Right and you are good on camera and it's something that definitely helps right I mean, if you if this is in your wheelhouse and you can talk in sound bites, you've got a really great pitch. I don't see why they wouldn't say yes to something like that. And when you have your peeps your squad, you know emailing in to say hey, that was great. That could help so get your your friends your fans to to vouch for you. Because because the media notices when people right, the media probably gets enough nasty messages and not enough encouraging messages. When they do get encouraging messages, hey, we're doing something good. Maybe we should do more of that. Yeah, and don't overwhelm them though, right? I mean, you don't want to ask, like don't put it on social media, and then they get 50 emails. ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by honing your communication skills. We'll examine the aspects of how we communicate one-to-one, one to few and one to many – plus that important conversation, one to self. In these interviews we will explore presentation skills, public speaking, conversation, persuasion, negotiation, sales conversations, marketing, team meetings, social media, branding, self talk and more.   Your host is George Torok George is a specialist in communication skills. A Maui girl is setting records in the world of archery! 14-year-old Liko Arreola of Makawao and her mother Teri join us on ‘Muthaship' this week! Liko is the youngest to have scored a perfect 900 last year when she was 13, the youngest to win a championship division, and the first female to have shot a 900 back to back. Liko got hooked on the sport at the age of 7 after she was inspired by the Disney movie “Brave”. Her dad has been coaching her ever since. Liko opens up about her passion for shooting targets and explains what other interested keiki can do to get started. Her dream is to qualify for the 2023 U.S. Archery team and we think she is definitely on the right track! You can hear more of our conversation with Liko Arreola on our ‘Muthaship' podcast right now on Hawaii News Now dot com -- or wherever you download podcasts! Melanie is an avid traveller and storyteller. Born in Queensland's capital city of Brisbane, she spent most of her early years playing in the tepid waters and dense jungles of Papua New Guinea's Sepik coastal town of Wewak. She has been traversing the globe since she was born and has lived in Hawaii, Mexico, Denmark, Australia and Papua New Guinea. As a learned Anthropologist, her passion for storytelling came naturally and when she discovered her love for the captured image, photography seemed like the perfect calling. Starting out as a documentary photographer and photojournalist, in 2009 she diverged into fashion photography and has never looked back. Her passions include Hawaii, traveling, writing, running and making art. Sharon Lau shares her extraordinary work teaching young keiki of Hawaii, our children, communication skills on a collegiate level. There isn't enough focus in the public school system to teach young children the skills to convey their messages in a positive way in order to build healthy meaningful relationships and the confidence to reach their goals. This work empowers our youth to grow for they will be the next leaders, business owners, and citizens of our community. I wish her all the best as she plans to scale her business so that more kids can benefit from her important work.
