The UK government has recently pledged to put around £14 billion into supporting the development of artificial intelligence over the next few years.  But because AI comes with perils as well as promises, careful policy decision are going to be crucial. In order to make such decision in an informed way, politicians need to interact with the mathematicians and scientist who develop AI. In this episode of Maths on the Move we talk to mathematician Chris Budd who recently went to Parliament for something called Evidence Week, where he and other AI researchers talked with MPs and Peers from the House of Lords. Chris tells us about the discussions he had with politicians — about the worrying issue of bias in AI, its promising applications, for example in the medical arena, and also about the fact that AI is built on mathematics. A strong maths education, starting at primary school, is therefore essential if we're going to make the best of AI in the future. Chris is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Bath, co-lead of the research project Maths4DL, and Director of Knowledge Exchange for the Bath Institute for Mathematical Innovation. He attended Evidence week with a team of researchers which included Yolanne Lee, a Maths4DL PhD student who recently featured in another Maths on the Move episode. The image above shows, from left to right, Dáire O'Kane (Maths4DL), Jenny Power (IMI), Yolanne Lee (Maths4DL), and Alexandra Freeman, Baroness Freeman of Steventon. To find out more about some of the topics discussed in this episode see AI be the judge: The use of algorithms in the criminal justice system Can AI help with breast cancer screening? In today's podcast we explore the role that academia and research can and must play in transforming infrastructure into the modern, joined up, innovative sector needed to deliver a sustainable future for communities. My guest is Jeni Giambona, Associate Dean of Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise at the University of Southampton Business School, where she is also a Professor and a Member of the Centre for Resilient Socio-Technical Systems. More on that later. But full alumni disclosure – it is 30 years since I started my own undergrad course in Civil Engineering at Southampton University – fond if distant memories even if I'm not sure anyone there really remembers my particular academic contribution!Operating at a slight higher academic level, Jeni has worked in the higher education world and been involved at the sharp end of research for around two decades and specialises in Knowledge exchange and dissemination, engagement and systems thinking. It is fair to say that driving and investing in innovation remains key to boosting the infrastructure sector's productivity and the outcomes - setting up projects and our approach to the delivery of asset management in new and better ways. That means embracing a systems approach; really doubling down on the need for collaboration and supply chain engagement; and of course investing in new data and digital technologies to help us to truly understand how infrastructure works. All of which is firmly on Jeni's research and teaching agenda at Southampton as she attempts to infect the sector with her passion and enthusiasm for change and pursuit of better outcomes – let's hear more. ResourcesUniversity of Southampton Business SchoolSystems Thinking and Leadership Development Executive EducationLeaders and Entrepreneurs-in-Residence programmeNew Forest Business PartnershipUK Higher Education and Transnational Education MissionThe Newfoundland breed

More than 80% of U.S. milk production goes into dairy food products that rely on milk components while less than 20% goes into the fluid beverage category. Would U.S. milk composition and consumer demand benefit from a more comprehensive monthly report from USDA that includes milk, protein and butterfat production levels? Joining us in this episode to discuss this topic in more depth is Corey Geiger, lead dairy economist with CoBank. We caught up with Corey at this week's World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis., This episode has been brought to you by United Animal Health, a leader in animal health and nutrition. Where are all the women in the public realm? There are more statues of animals than named women in London's public spaces. So we look at the first statue of a woman in Parliament Square, Westminster. Listen as we share the story of Millicent Fawcett who, alongside many other women, fought hard to secure women's right to vote. We then take the journey from Westminster to West Hampstead, Camden, where pioneering novelist and educator Beryl Gilroy became one of London's first Black headteachers – at a school that, until recently, was named after a slave-owner. Now, a mural outside the newly renamed primary school where she taught is a permanent celebration of her legacy. Two pieces of eye–catching art tell a multitude of stories – not only of two women's achievements centuries apart, but also of the Windrush generation, London's past links to slavery and empire, and modern-day strides towards feminism. ---------- Presenter: Aindrea Emelife, Curator of Modern and Contemporary at MOWAA (Museum of West African Art). The term 'spiritual abuse' is increasingly used in faith contexts, but what exactly is it, and how does it differ from other forms of abuse? Jonathan Thomas explores the issues. Jonathan hears the testimonies of those who have suffered abuse including Caroline Plant, founder of Replenished Life, a charity based in St David's that supports victims of spiritual abuse. Co-founder Simon Plant explains their personal motivation to establish the charity. Dr Lisa Oakley, Professor of Safeguarding and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Chester, and joint author of the book Exploring the Maze of Spiritual Abuse explains what makes spiritual abuse distinctive from other forms of abuse. The most recent allegations to hit the headlines about spiritual abuse have been against Mike Pilavachi, founder and figurehead of Soul Survivor in Watford. Over many years this church attracted tens of thousands of young worshippers through their annual Christian festivals. Allegations of 'inappropriate relationships' between Pilavachi and young male interns have come as a shock to the Evangelical Christian community. Megan Cornwell, Deputy Editor of Premier Christianity Magazine and host of podcast Soul Survivors examines the allegations. This autumn St David's Catholic Cathedral in Cardiff is hosting a week-long 'Loud Fence' initiative to provide a voice to those who have experienced abuse in faith based settings. During the week people are encouraged to tie brightly coloured ribbons and messages of support to railings to recognise survivors of abuse. Antonia Sobocki is the leader of the initiative in the UK. She explains why we need a radical change in the way we respond to survivors of abuse.

They also discuss what progress has been made since the tragic incident at Rana Plaza ten years ago.—------PUMA has ten target areas, each with a set of goals, that we are striving to reach by 2025. This episode focuses on the target area of Health and Safety.Ensuring safe working conditions for our own employees and hundreds of thousands of indirect employees at our manufacturing partners is an ethical imperative, but also makes good business sense. What it actually means: A safe workplace is a top priority at PUMA and we continuously carry out building safety inspections among high-risk factories in our supply chain. In 2021 we were able to conduct the structural/fire/electrical safety inspection at three suppliers from Pakistan and India. At the headquarters level, we operate an occupational health and safety committee, which includes a specialised labour physician, a health and safety technician and employee representatives.Goal 1: Zero fatal accidents (PUMA and suppliers)In 2022 we recorded two factory employee deaths resulting from work-related accidents in Bangladesh in two different factories. Both factories paid the legal compensation to the worker's family. PUMA collaborated with Better Work Bangladesh for joint monitoring and regular follow up on the actions taken to prevent future occurrence of such accidents. We deeply regret these tragic accidents.Goal 2: Reduce accident rate to 0.5 (PUMA and suppliers)As we believe that the health and safety of the people working for PUMA and in PUMA production always come first, we will continue to work with our own entities and suppliers to avoid disease and accidents.Goal 3: Building safety policy operational in all high-risk countriesFrom 2015 to the end of 2022, our Building Safety Assessment Program covered Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Pakistan.PUMA publishes all of its progress, challenges and setbacks in its Sustainability Report. Hello Climate Confident listeners! I'm so excited to share with you the latest episode of the podcast where I had the pleasure of speaking once again with Prof Denise Baden and also this time with Prof Matt Ryan. In this episode, we dive into the topic of Citizen Assemblies and the role they play in addressing the climate crisis.Denise and Matt are both experts in the field and it was amazing to hear about their experiences and insights on this topic. We talked about the importance of involving citizens in the decision-making process and how Citizen Assemblies can help to find solutions to complex issues, such as climate change. One of the highlights of the episode was when Denise shared a story about a successful Citizen Assembly in Gdansk, Poland. It was inspiring to hear how a group of 60 city dwellers were given the authority to take action and made sweeping changes in areas like flood mitigation, air pollution, and even controversial topics like LGBT rights. And to top it off, the assemblies ended with a hug!Matt also shared valuable information about the Knowledge Network on Climate Assemblies (KNOCA) website, knoca.eu, which is a great resource for anyone interested in learning more about Citizen Assemblies and their role in addressing the climate crisis.Throughout the episode, Denise and Matt emphasized the importance of finding the right mix of entertainment, decision-making structures, and inclusion in the Citizen Assembly process. They shared that while there may be mistakes made along the way, the goal is to find solutions that will allow us to survive, thrive, and flourish without damaging the planet. If you're interested in learning more about Denise, Matt, Citizen Assemblies, or any of the topics we discussed in the podcast, be sure to check out sortitionfoundation.org, dabaden.com, and participedia.net.I hope you enjoyed this episode of Climate Confident! What does zero carbon look like if you are planning a new housing development in your town. The UK's building stock is one of the oldest in Europe, accounting for nearly 40% of the nation's total carbon emissions, so how possible is it for our cities to cut them to zero before 2050? Lecturer Lara Salinas explains how she has worked with local residents in the borough of Southwark in South London, encouraging them to take up zero carbon building design and retrofit. Professor Ljubomir Jankovic describes working with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, supporting their thinking about how housing developments could be built in future and how to build in net zero principles as part of the design process. New Generation Thinker Des Fitzgerald hosts the conversation. Ljubomir Jankovic is Professor of Advanced Building at the University of Hertfordshire and leads the Zero Carbon Lab. Lara Salinas is Lecturer in the Design School at London College of Communication and Senior Research Fellow in Knowledge Exchange at University of the Arts London. Professor Des Fitzgerald is a New Generation Thinker who has co-written a book called The Urban Brain: Mental Health in the Vital City. This New Thinking episode of the Arts and Ideas podcast was made in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council, part of UKRI. If you want to dig out other episodes you can find a collection called Green Thinking on the website of BBC Radio 3's Free Thinking programme – there are discussions about a range of topics including climate justice, energy, trees and transport. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p07zg0r2 For more information about the research the AHRC's supports around climate change and the natural world you can visit: Responding to climate change – UKRI or follow @ahrcpress on twitter. On today's episode, I'm joined by Remso Martinez to discuss his new Substack venture, "Club Memos", that focuses on creating a community of good people. As we talk about how he got started, Remso shares his thoughts on how communities can help us grow and learn from one another. We then move on to discuss how he came to the conclusion that there are some things you can only learn through experience, which is why he believes that when it comes to knowledge exchange, it's important to share what you know with others so that they can benefit from your experience. We also talk about the importance of having shared intel and knowledge exchange within our communities in order to help each other out in times of need. The more people who are part of your community means there will be more people who have access to the information you have collected over time. This makes it easier for them to help themselves out when they need something specific or just want support from someone else who has been through something similar before them. I've known Remso for about a number of years and have been thoroughly impressed with his ability to connect with others and create meaningful relationships with them. This quality is what drove him to start Club Memos—a group dedicated to connecting like-minded individuals who want to be part of something bigger than themselves.
