When we went looking for information on the condition known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, one of the first things we noticed was that some people aren't even calling it that anymore. The website for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), for instance, uses the term “major depressive disorder with a seasonal pattern”, which means an acronym of MDDWASP. Here at Depresh Mode, we're perfectly fine referring to it as “mud wasp”. On this episode of the show, we talk with NAMI's chief medical officer, Dr. Ken Duckworth, about how it's similar to and different from traditional depression and what one could do to deal with it. Written by Dr. Ken Duckworth with the expertise of a leading psychiatrist and the empathy of a family member affected by mental illness, this comprehensive guide includes stories from over 130 people who have been there — including people with mental illness and caregivers — and understand how challenging it can be to find the help you need, when you need it. You Are Not Alone: the NAMI Guide to Navigating Mental Health is a deep and thorough look at mental health and mental illness as they are experienced by people from all walks of life. The book's author, Dr. Ken Duckworth, medical director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, interviewed 130 people who have dealt with trauma, depression, psychosis, OCD, and just about any other mental disorder you can think of. He hadn't intended to talk to so many but it was all too fascinating to stop. He says it was only a book deadline that prevented him from talking to 130 more. Ken contends that there are two kinds of experts: the ones who get advanced degrees and career achievements in psychiatry and psychology and the ones who become experts by living through mental health situations. In this interview with Depresh Mode, Ken talks about the vast knowledge and wisdom we can gain from one another and how the new societal openness about mental health is creating a better world. We also talk about Bigfoot.Get your copy of You Are Not Alone: the NAMI Guide to Navigating Mental Health wherever books are sold. We will learn: How to make sure you have the right diagnosis. How to make sure your provider or your medications are the right fit. How to assist in your own recovery outside of therapy. When you're depressed or struggling, it can be hard to do anything at all, let alone find a therapist, book an appointment, and actually get there… week after week after week. And then there are the medications. Maybe your doctor prescribes you something, but how do you know how to measure if it is effective? How do you know how long to try? Or when to switch? Is that even safe? And then why does therapy work so well for some and not for others? What should you be doing between sessions to feel the benefits? Well, that's what we're talking about today. Our guest is Ken Duckworth. He's the chief medical officer of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and has worked with NAMI since 2003. He is board certified in adult psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry and is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. His passion for this work comes from his loving dad, who had bipolar disorder. No, bipolar disorder doesn't mean that you're kind of cheerful one day and a little bit glum the next. Those are just moods. That's not a disorder. The Mayo Clinic says of bipolar, “When you become depressed, you may feel sad or hopeless and lose interest or pleasure in most activities. When your mood shifts to mania or hypomania (less extreme than mania), you may feel euphoric, full of energy or unusually irritable. These mood swings can affect sleep, energy, activity, judgment, behavior and the ability to think clearly.”We unpack what bipolar means from the perspective of our friend, Dr. Ken Duckworth, medical director for the National Alliance on Mental Alliance. He's a psychiatrist and also grew up with a bipolar father. Writer and pundit Ana Marie Cox is in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction and she deals with what's known as bipolar II, a variation on the disorder, that comes with symptoms that can be subtle but powerful.Visit the National Alliance on Mental Illness or NAMI here.Visit Ana Marie Cox's website here. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and isolation efforts in March, Americans have reported negative mental health outcomes. Whether it's because they've lost a job or are in fear losing one, they're struggling to piece together money to pay bills, or they're worried about their health and safety (or that of everyone in their house), the continuous onslaught of worry and insecurity is leading to greater mental health issues than ever before. Today, most people who are in lockdown are reporting symptoms and signs of depression, anxiety, and fear. This increase has been sustained for several weeks and shows no signs yet of fading. In this episode, we are going to unpack mental health and discuss how you can manage your mental and emotional wellbeing during this time. Ken Duckworth, M.D., chief medical officer of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will be joining us on this episode. Dr. Duckworth will share all the strategies you can use to look after yourself during COVID 19 and beyond.

The Hilarious World of Depression

Here's a repeat of an episode originally aired last year. We're offering this repeat because some things need repeating, such as how to get help for your mental health when you really need it. It's a conversation with Dr. Ken Duckworth, Medical Director for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and it's practical advice. A lot of people will say “get help” for mental  illness; here's what you can do to make that happen.

In the USA, when googling "depression" patients will be presented with a link to the PHQ-9 screening test. Google has developed this in collaboration with the National Alliance on Mental Illness - and Ken Duckworth, the alliance's medical director, debates the merits of this approach with Simon Gilbody, from the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York. Also joining this podcast is David Gilbert, mental health services user and director of InHealth Associates, who argues that it's only through patient involvement that real improvements to mental health can be obtained.
