Not all gangs exist in Savannah's neighborhoods. They also exist in Savannah's boardrooms, commissions, and oligarchical institutions. Just one of the many aspects that comprise Savannah's failing public safety quagmire. It's policing done on the cheap with a willful disregard for all of Savannah's citizens and muddled up by politicians looking for a sound bite. John and Chuck Open up the episode with an update on the Weeping Time property. City Manager and Council released the Brockington survey which confirmed the property in question was in fact not a direct part of the weeping time event. we discuss our disappointment and next steps. We then welcome our guest for this week Kevin Grogan Kevin Grogan is a former Savannah Police Department officer, controversial and outspoken to be sure, yet this is a man who worked under 4 former police chiefs. He began working Savannah streets in 2004 and he ultimately was forced to resign as a homicide detective in 2014 - after his own life spun out of control. He stood up and faced the inevitable fact that his police career was over. After his dismissal from the police department Kevin wrote a popular book, “White Cop Black Sheep.” Better Savannah asks Kevin about the failure of the department and the meteoric rise in shootings Savannah is currently experiencing. We agreed that currently and historically it is both a shortage of officers and the quality of our officers that are at the root of our problem - but interestingly Kevin also faults the undue influences of politicians meddling in police work that hurts delivering better public safety for Savannah's citizens. Hear his thoughts about Savannah PD's command staff, Chief Minter's future, and the fractured lens through which the media reports on Savannah's crime problems. This one's a little different. Kevin Grogan is a former homicide detective with the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department. I had a lot of respect for him before this episode but even more-so after this episode. Sure, he shared some incredible stories from his years on violent crime task forces, multi-jurisdictional drug task forces and as a homicide detective, but that's fun. What isn't fun is sharing a story about a mistake you made that ended an otherwise storied career. But he did. And not only that, he shared the story of his two-year battle afterward against unfounded criminal allegations that resulted in a grand jury indictment on felony charges for which he was ultimately acquitted. There's a lot to learn from this one.
This is the second of three Q&A sessions with Paul Merriman, Chris Pedersen, Director of Research, and Daryl Bahls, Director of Analytics with The Merriman Financial Education Foundation. It is a follow-up to Paul's webinar, “Which Is The Best 1-,2-, 3- and 4 Fund Strategy?” sponsored by the American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) on Sept. 23, 2020. At the end of that presentation, Paul was joined by Chris and Daryl to address questions for 30 minutes. As there were many more questions than time permitted answering, this podcast — also available as a video — continues to address those audience questions. In this Q&A session, the three “conflict-free teachers” dive into these big topics: • Equity asset class selection • Comparing returns • Dollar-cost averaging • Sequence returns and risks in accumulation and distribution stages Questions addressed include: - Why don’t you include small and large growth in your recommendations? - Gold and commodities: why not? - What’s the value of adding international funds? - Does it matter whether you use Vanguard or Fidelity Funds? - Do you use Portfolio Visualizer to understand the factor weighing of your portfolio? - How do your “Best in Class” ETFs, that duplicate DFA’s, compete with Vanguard? - Which strategies are better when you consider tax implications of rebalancing? Paul answers this last question briefly, citing from and recommending DIYers read “Your Complete Guide to a Successful and Secure Retirement” by Larry Swedroe and Kevin Grogan. Click here to download the pdf presentation, with enormous thanks to Daryl Bahls, our Director of Analytics, for his insightful Tables. Everyone holding up ok? Let me know how you are! So excited today's conversation with you. I was a *little* intimidated to interview these guys ( did you SEE their pictures? Check out my instagram: @diealoguepod), but I had little reason to fear. Kevin + Lou are warm, kind, and most impressive, candid about their stories - personally and professionally. This is one of the traits I admire most in people and appreciate most in a guest! Yes, you will hear about their FASCINATING careers - how they started and what a "typical" day looked like as undercover ATF agent (Kevin), and a homicide detective (Lou), but you will also hear about their struggles and how they sought help and now help others who have experienced trauma in their work. Please check out their podcast - they are talking to some really interesting people and they often tackle issues of mental health in law enforcement. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/end-of-watch-with-bootsy-sal/id1481870424 Here is Kevin's book about his story as a Savannah Homicide Detective. Lou's book coming soon, and so much more - these guys are ones to watch.
