Introduction: The Problem We Can't Ignore We live in a world where the food we eat is supposed to nourish us, but what if it's actually making us sick? Pesticides, soil degradation, and nutrient-depleted crops are all part of our modern food system, contributing to rising cases of neurological disorders, metabolic diseases, and immune dysfunction. The research is clear: exposure to certain pesticides has been linked to cognitive decline, Parkinson's disease, and an increased cancer risk. At the same time, the way we farm today is stripping our food of the vital nutrients our ancestors took for granted. So, the question isn't just about avoiding chemicals—it's about finding food that truly fuels life. The solution? Organic, regenerative, and locally grown produce. Let's break down the science and give you real reasons why it's never been more important to care about where your food comes from.     The Science Behind Pesticides and Health Risks  The Hidden Dangers of Conventional Farming Pesticide residues in conventional food contribute to long-term health risks, including cognitive decline and neurodevelopmental disorders in children. According to Holzman (2012) in Organic Food Conclusions Don't Tell the Whole Story, "Pesticide dietary risk is a function of many factors, including the number of residues, their levels, and pesticide toxicity." (Holzman, 2012).  Organophosphate pesticides, commonly used in industrial agriculture, have been directly linked to Parkinson's disease. As Mie et al. (2017) state in Human Health Implications of Organic Food and Organic Agriculture, "Epidemiological studies have reported adverse effects of certain pesticides on children's cognitive development at current levels of exposure." (Mie et al., 2017).  Pregnant women consuming conventional produce showed higher levels of pyrethroid insecticides in their bodies compared to those eating organic. Curl et al. (2019) in Effect of a 24-week Randomized Trial of an Organic Produce Intervention found that "3-Phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA, a biomarker for pyrethroids) concentrations were significantly higher in conventional produce consumers compared to organic consumers." (Curl et al., 2019).      The Cancer Connection The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified several pesticides used in conventional farming—such as glyphosate and malathion—as likely carcinogens. Hemler et al. (2018) in Organic Foods for Cancer Prevention—Worth the Investment? found that "Participants with the highest frequency of organic food consumption had a 25% lower risk of being diagnosed with cancer during follow-up compared with those with the lowest frequency." (Hemler et al., 2018).     The Nutrient Density Solution: More Than Just Pesticide-Free  Higher Nutrients in Organic & Regenerative Foods  Organic fruits and vegetables contain higher levels of vitamin C, essential minerals like magnesium and iron, and more powerful antioxidants. Maloney (2014) in Comparative Study on Nutritional Quality and Detection of Pesticide Residues states, "Organic foods are better in taste, appearance, firmness, and nutrient content when compared to conventional foods." (Maloney, 2014). Organically grown produce has 20-40% higher levels of antioxidants than conventionally grown produce, which help protect against inflammation and chronic diseases. According to Mie et al. (2017), "Differences in the composition between organic and conventional crops include a modestly higher content of phenolic compounds in organic fruit and vegetables." (Mie et al., 2017).     The Simple Steps to Better Food Go Organic Whenever Possible – Reduce your pesticide exposure and increase the nutrient density of your food.  Support Local & Regenerative Farms – Look for farmers using soil-restoring practices that make food healthier.  Grow Your Own – Even a small backyard garden or balcony pot can produce pesticide-free, nutrient-rich food.  Buy Seasonal Produce – Seasonal food is fresher, richer in nutrients, and often grown closer to home. Prioritize the Dirty Dozen – If you can't go 100% organic, at least choose organic versions of the most pesticide-laden produce, like strawberries, spinach, and apples.     Conclusion: Take Back Control of Your Health  Our food choices today impact our health for decades to come. Science shows that organic, regenerative, and locally grown food isn't just a trendy choice—it's a necessity. From reducing pesticides to boosting essential nutrients, switching to better food sources is one of the most powerful steps you can take to live a longer, healthier life.  So, are you ready to make the change?     Bibliography: Holzman, D. In this episode, I sit down with Darin Olien, renowned health expert, author, and co-host of Netflix's Down to Earth, to discuss his journey in wellness, sustainability, and superfoods. The conversation kicks off with how I met Darin at Expo West, where I was introduced to the superfood Barukas nuts, known for their low-water footprint, high antioxidant content, and virtually no heavy metals. Darin shares the incredible backstory behind his discovery of Barukas and how they're revolutionizing health and sustainability. We dive deep into Darin's perspective on staying hopeful amidst overwhelming health challenges like hidden toxins in everyday products and new pesticides in our food. We explore how people can protect themselves from these unseen dangers, even when harmful substances aren't listed on product labels. We also discuss what it takes to make lasting health changes, how to overcome the comfort of bad habits, and why some of us need to hit rock bottom before real transformation begins. Darin opens up about the principles he's reevaluated over the years and reflects on staying true to his values in an era where influencers are often tempted by financial incentives over integrity. The conversation touches on practical advice for those living in food deserts, the real impact of genetics on our health, and why humans seem to have lost their instinctive understanding of what to eat, unlike wild animals. Lastly, as fellow introverts, Darin and I reflect on the challenges of maintaining energy and empathy in a world filled with online negativity. We're outnumbered, folks! The estimated number of insects to humans is 200 million to one. This is a battle we will most definitely lose. Yet, we try in vain. In this hive of insect activity, repellents can help you steer clear of nasty stings and bites. But is our reliance on bug sprays harming our health? Mosquitos are a pest! Every year, a third of us will cover ourselves with almost five pounds of bug repellent to keep those blood-thirsty bugs at bay. Okay, so there is a good reason to do so. After all, there are many mosquito and tick-transmitted diseases to ward off: West Nile virus, malaria, and Lyme Disease, to name a couple. So, I'm not here to tell you that protecting yourself from bites isn't important. But, if the repellent you're using can fend off mosquitoes, maybe what it's doing to you isn't so great either. In this Fatal Conveniences™, I break down the most common toxic chemicals lurking in insect repellents, such as DEET (N, N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), the granddaddy of them all. I also explain how these repellents affect children and the simple things you can do today to keep insects away without sacrificing your health. Bugs, insects, insects, Insecta, or insectum—whatever you call our hexapod invertebrates, these creepy critters are vital for our ecosystems. So, finding non-harmful, preventative alternatives is crucial for the survival of not only us as a species but also this incredible planet that we live on. Making a New Year's resolution is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, setting goals and setting out to improve yourself and your life is a very positive action to take. However, making unachievable resolutions is just setting you up for stress and disappointment.   Why do we start off the New Year by making resolutions we can't keep?   Let me start off by saying I'm actually a fan of New Year's resolutions. Every year, I reevaluate my current goals and set new ones for the year. However, I'm not a fan of unreasonable resolutions that set you up for failure. Or of the social pressure that comes every January 1st. Pressure does not create opportunity. It just creates stress.   On average, Americans make the same resolutions every year: lose weight, work out, eat better, quit smoking, save money and drink less. There's nothing wrong with any of those resolutions. But I'm curious about the underlying reasons for them.   If you want to lose weight to look good in Instagram pictures or quit smoking so your partner stops bothering you about it- you're more likely to break that resolution quickly. But if you want to lose weight to feel better about yourself and more content in your life, you may actually succeed! We need to start thinking about the intent behind these resolutions. Why do you want to achieve this goal?    This episode is not about ragging on anyone who sets a New Year's resolution. It's about learning how to make resolutions that help you improve your life. I don't want your goals to set you on a shame spiral. I want to help you achieve all your goals in a healthy way. We need to dig a little deeper into the “why” before we can get to the “how”. Here's a shocking statistic you probably didn't know about Thanksgiving meals: An average Thanksgiving plate contains about 80-90 grams of fat which is as much as  1⅓ sticks of butter – and it contains on average 75 grams of sugar, which is equivalent to almost 20 teaspoons of pure sugar. Plus, the average person will gain between two to four pounds after the Thanksgiving feast. This isn't even getting into the actual ingredients being used in the traditional thanksgiving foods – especially a traditional stuffed turkey.    This doesn't mean we need to cancel Thanksgiving – it simply means it's time to rethink what your thanksgiving meals look like and how to approach the holiday in a more sustainable way. That's why in this episode of Fatal Conveniences, we'll explore Thanksgiving Meals.    Thank you to our sponsors:  Bite: Go to trybite.com/DARIN20 or use code DARIN20 for 20% off your first order. You wouldn't eat a bag of dried pellets made of meat by-products. So why would you feed it to your pet? Just like humans, animals need proper nutrition to thrive and live happy, healthy lives. Most store-bought pet foods consist of low-quality meats, fillers and preservatives.   Pet food manufacturers are constantly trying to make the food-making process cheaper. So that means cheap ingredients and cheap packaging. All of that results in poor nutritional health for your furry friends.   This one isn't tough, guys. We need to make sure our pets are eating whole, nutritional foods. I choose a plant-based diet for myself, but I know a vegan diet isn't best for my German Shepherd, Chaga. So I give him a fresh, mostly raw diet consisting of 75% meat and 25% veggies and ancient grains.    In this episode, I'll give you some tips on how to use fresh food for your dog and some fresh pet food companies that I love. I discuss the gross history of pet food companies, signs that your pet has a poor diet, why raw food is best for pets, studies that reveal the horrifying ingredients in dry pet food, if grain-free is better for your dog, what foods are best for cats and dogs, and great fresh pet food companies.   What I discuss: (0:02:02) - The history of pet food, its impact on pet health, and the need to treat our pets as family members (0:09:12) - The dangers of processed pet food, the lack of regulations, the questionable ingredients permitted in pet food, and the potential toxins in pet food (0:23:04) - The importance of conscious decision-making when it comes to the products we give our pets   Thank you to our sponsor: Therasage: Go to www.therasage.com  and use code DARIN at checkout for 15% off. If you live in the United States, you've most likely celebrated Halloween – you've gone trick or treating, you've carved a pumpkin, you've dressed up in costumes – you've done it all. While this holiday can be fun and add some excitement to our lives, it also comes at a cost.    For example, did you know in the United States, most of the 900,000 tons of pumpkin produced annually will be trashed, rather than used as food or composted? This enormous waste adds to the already critical global food waste crisis. Overall, around 1.3 billion tons of global waste are created each year. (World Economic  Forum, 2019)    This is just a small glimpse into the amount of waste created from this holiday, let alone the impact it can have on your health. Have you ever heard of Apeel before? Whether you have or haven't, You may have already eaten a piece of fruit at some point that was covered in it.    Apeel is a plant-based coating or ‘peel' that helps produce stay fresh for longer by slowing water loss, preventing oxidation and protecting against environmental stress, which are the primary causes of food spoilage. It uses a microscopic amount of Monoglycerides and Diglycerides, which are naturally found in fruits and vegetables, to create a breathable extra layer that keeps moisture inside the produce while keeping oxygen out.   While these glycerides can be extracted from any fruit or vegetable, Apeel extracts them from widely grown plant oils that are passed through a purifying process to remove allergens, impurities and trans fats. Apeel claims that it only uses plant oils from non-GMO and sustainably grown sources.    So, what's the issue? This episode is brought to you by LMNT, Caldera Lab, & Timeline Nutrition. Have you ever wondered about the impact our ever-increasing reliance on technology has on our health and environment? This episode sheds light on this crucial issue along with repeat guest Darin Olien. Together, we unravel the complexities of electromagnetic frequencies and their implications on our health, from cellular stress responses to the foreboding reality of lowered testosterone levels. Darin also highlights the urgent need to shift towards a sustainable home and poses challenging but realistic alternatives to our daily living that will not only keep us healthier but reduce our carbon footprint and create healthier communities. Fatal conveniences are the toxic products we routinely use and the unhealthy things we do that our culture and corporations have made us believe are safe and necessary for living well and efficiently. These things—from deodorant, cosmetics, dental floss, and sunscreen to laundry detergent, air fresheners, carpets, and crayons to candles, tea bags, cell phones, and chewing gum—are ubiquitous in daily life . . . and they are wreaking havoc on our health and our planet. The environmental toxins found in these products create a cascade of problems, including chemical sensitivities, auto-immune issues, obesity, chronic health diseases, and more. But it's not just about what we put in or on our bodies, we explore the profound impact our decisions can have on our personal growth and the world around us. Darin underscores the importance of connecting with others, caring for ourselves, and living purposefully. Dare to challenge fear, choose love instead, and transform your life one decision at a time. The human endocrine system is comprised of an entire network of organs and glands that control a myriad of processes in the body. Your endocrine system creates and releases hormones that control everything from your metabolism to your sexual function. And while the body is designed to filter out exposure to chemicals, our modern society is constantly bombarding us with plastics and fragrances that can disrupt the way our endocrine system is designed to function. New York Times bestselling author Darin Olien has dedicated a large portion of his career to researching fatal conveniences—common products and ways of living that are slowly and cumulatively disrupting our hormones and diminishing our health. In his new book, Fatal Conveniences, Darin writes about how common household objects like dental floss, laundry detergent, and mattresses often contain environmental toxins that are wreaking havoc on our bodies. On today's show, he's sharing some of the common fatal conveniences that you might be regularly exposed to, including herbicides and pesticides, plastic, fragrance, EMFs, and much more. You're going to learn how to reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals and how to become more empowered and conscious about your food, water, and household products. I hope you enjoy this interview with Darin Olien! In this episode you'll discover: What forever chemicals are and how they affect the body. The percentage of the average American's diet that is made up of ultra-processed foods. How the advent of glyphosate changed our food system. Accessible ways to clean your produce. The problem with plastic packaging on fruits and vegetables. How many personal care products the average woman uses daily. Common household products that contain harmful chemicals. The connection between microplastics and declining sperm counts. What to consider about EMFs. The link between BPA and fertility. What an accumulative body burden is. The definition of greenwashing. How growing your own produce can reduce your chemical exposure. The sneaky chemicals hiding in common floss brands. What fragrance actually is. The number one way to begin reducing your toxic load.
