On this weeks podcast, John meets up with Fr Eamon Kelly from Donegal who shares with us his experience of volunteering with the charity Mary's Meals. We have our regular run through the liturgical odds and ins this week and the reflection on the Sunday gospel with our wandering panellist Shane to assist John in the process. Step by Step to feed the next Child - Mary's Meals.Starting out initially as a response to the needs of families in the former Yugoslavia in 1983, the charity has now expanded serving 2,429,182 children across 17 countries, in communities where hunger and poverty would prevent children from gaining an education. Fr Eamon tells us how for the past eleven years in Ireland, volunteers have walked to Knock Shrine to raise awareness of, and funds for, Mary's Meals. For 2024 they are now launching Step by Step to Feed the Next Child 2024 with walks originating in Malin (Donegal), Thurles, Cavan, the Spire (Dublin), Kilkenny, Longford, Limerick and N Ireland. All walks go from 7 August to 15 August. They are seeking people to help create new walks, join in the walks for a day or half day or a few hours, collect funds, take a sponsor card or promote the walk. It costs €22 to give a child a meal each day in school for a school year and every eleven cents raised provides a meal. This is a great way of gaining a bit of fitness and doing great work at the same time. Contact details are: Eamonn Kelly (Rev), Parochial House, Convoy, Co. On this weeks podcast we are starting a small series on different Marian devotions and shrines which we are going to be covering for the month of May - as of course in Catholic tradition May is the month of Mary! So to get things off to a start we are delving back into the archive to an interview we did in May 2010 with Michael Keating to share the story of Our Lady of Knock and the story of the apparition in what was a forgotten part of the west of Ireland after a very bleak time. Known as the silent apparition (there was no messages) Michael reflects on what it says to us right down to the present day. We have our regular run through the liturgical odds and ends for the coming week, some bits of news from around the Catholic world which caught our eye and of course in part three we have our weekly reflection on the Sunday gospel which this week is the second part of the Last Discourse at the Last Supper from the gospel of St John (John 15:9-17) with Jesus command to love.

Friends of the Rosary: Today, along with the Irish people, we commemorate the Memorial of Our Lady of Knock. We celebrate the apparition of Our Lady, St. Joseph, St. John the Evangelist, the Lamb, and a Cross on an altar on the wall of the parish church in the village of Knock in County Mayo in Ireland, on August 21, 1879. The apparition was described as follows: "Our Lady was wearing a large, brilliant crown and clothed in white garments. On her right was Saint Joseph, his head inclined toward her and on her left Saint John the Evangelist. To the left of Saint John was an altar on which stood a cross and a lamb. Standing only a few feet off the ground, the Blessed Virgin wore a white cloak and was described by witnesses as being incredibly beautiful. She wore a bright golden crown, and appeared to be praying with her eyes looking toward heaven with her arms bent in front of her with her palms facing inward." Fifteen parishioners witnessed the apparition for two hours as they recited the Rosary. Although it was daylight when the apparition began, the weather turned for the worse and it began to rain heavily. However, the area around the apparition appeared unaffected, as the ground remained dry as long as the vision lasted. Our Lady did not speak, and the gable of the church where the manifestation was made was covered with a cloud of light. Saint Joseph also wore white robes and stood on the Virgin's right. He inclined his head respectfully toward the Blessed Virgin. Saint John the Evangelist wore a miter and appeared to be preaching as he held a book in his left hand. For over 140 years, the Knock Shrine has welcomed pilgrims and visitors to this sacred place, sanctified by Mary's apparition. The Knock Shrine has been officially recognized as an international Eucharistic and Marian Shrine by Pope Francis, through the Pontifical Council for New Evangelization in March 2021. The Rosary comprises the main portion of the devotion. The shrine is therefore appropriately called the Rosary Shrine. Devotion to St. Joseph has always emphasized his role as the protector of the Holy Family. Unique to the Apparition is the presence of the Lamb of God upon the altar, a visual presentation of the gift and mystery of the Eucharist. St. John the Evangelist stands between Our Lady and the altar and Lamb. It is his Gospel that refers to Jesus as the Lamb of God. He appears to be preaching on the Eucharistic altar, Cross, and Lamb that is at the very center of the apparition. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Our Lady of Knock, Pray for Us! On this weeks podcast John and Shane are doing something a little different. Normally here on C&SI we don't stray into the area of politics and controversy. However, there are times when we feel that we can contribute to the public conversation and the current discussion around euthanasia and assisted suicide which is a topic being discussed in the Joint Health Committee of the Irish Oireachtas is one such area of concern. As part of that discussion we are going to have two weeks of podcasts looking into the issue. On this weeks podcast we are replaying a conversation we had with Dr Donal Murray, bishop emeritus of Limerick exploring the issue of freedom of conscience (particularly for those who regard themselves as Catholic) which we had back on 17th May 2015. And on next weeks podcast we are going to have a discussion with Dr Angelo Bottone, who is a lecturer in UCD and also a contributor to the Iona Institue thinktank about the issue. In addition we do have our more normal fare on the podcast including a run through the upcoming saints of the week and of course our few thoughts and reflections on the Sunday gospel (Matthew 13:24-43) the parables of the wheat and the darnell, the mustard seed and the yeast. The other thing which we have flagged to listeners this week is the upcoming national novena to Our Lady of Knock to be held at Knock Shrine from August 14th - 22nd 2023. The programme of speakers at other events is quite impressive this year (and we are not just saying that because we happen to have interviewed a lot of them!) and you can get the full programme of events HERE. We would also hope to share some of the talks on the podcast later in the year.
Over 600 people will be taking to the road between Knock Shrine in Mayo and Kilkerrin in County Galway on a journey that has been organised to raise money for Galway Hospice. The journey is called "Journey for Ger" and is in memory of a great Kilkerrin United man in Ger McMahon who passed away from cancer in March 2023. Those involved will start at Knock Shrine at 8.15am and make their way first to Bekan and then on to Ballyhaunis for the first legs with subsequent legs from Ballyhaunis to Ballinlough, Ballinlough to Williamstown, Williamstown to Glenamaddy and Glenamaddy to Kilkerrin hoping to arrive at 6pm that evening. What is unique about this fundraiser is that people don't have to do the full journey. They can do separate legs or the entire thing and it is this that has grabbed the attention of so many with support coming from all sporting clubs in the area such as Kilkerrin/Clonberne, Glenamaddy/Williamstown ladies and others. Damian Mahon is one of the organisers who is a son of the late Ger and he spoke to John Mulligan about the event.

Friends of the Rosary: Today, along with the people of Ireland, we celebrate the Memorial of Our Lady of Knock. In 1879, in the village of Knock in County Mayo in the west of Ireland, Our Lady, St. Joseph, St. John the Apostle, a Lamb and a Cross appeared on an altar on the wall of the parish church [image below], and to some villagers. For two hours, a crowd gathered to adore the apparition and to pray the rosary. Despite the rainstorm, no one got wet. Unlike in most other Marian apparitions, the Virgin Mary was silent the entire time. As Pope Francis said, the message from Knock is the great value of silence for our faith. Today, the Knock Shrine is an international Marian and Eucharistic shrine. The Vatican's designation was after miraculous healing involving Eucharistic adoration at Knock Shrine in 1989. Ave Maria! Some lovely reflections from Dr Jessie Rogers, Sr Betty Baker, Sr Helen Culhane, and Sharon Collopy.FCJ Spirituality House, Spanish PointNoirin introduces us to a new venture in hospitality and spiritual accompaniment by the FCJ Sisters in Spanish Point Co Clare where the sisters are opening the door of their home to welcome in people to enable moments of reflection, recollection, community and prayer with both the local community in Spanish Point and further afield. Given the current situation with the pandemic some of it is in person, some of it is online and you can find out more at the Facebook of the FCJ Spirituality House, Spanish PointEmail - info@fcjspiritualityhouse.ie Reflecting on the VisitationDo we ever stop to reflect on the role of Mary as the first evangelist? Mary was the first to carry Jesus to others, sharing the Good News where she carried within her very being, carrying of Jesus to another which brought an expression and outpouring of joy to Elizabeth in her recognition of her God. We are called to be the cradles of Christ rather that then castle of Christ internally. The material for Sunday's 'Pregnant with Promise' was from Jane Mellett and Triona Doherty Doyles new book 'The Deep End' with Noirin's own particular take on it. Available from Messenger Publications with reflections for every Sunday of the year!
