Send us a textThis podcast is about dealing with your identity struggle as part of the Asian diaspora. I share personal stories and sometimes interview others to promote healthy, honest conversations about what it means to carry trauma, resentment, and confusion—and how we move toward peace, joy, and self-love. I don't have all the answers. This is an ongoing conversation. But today, I have a solution: learn martial arts.If you're a young, lost kid struggling with your identity like I was, this can change your life. It might not solve everything, but it will transform you—physically, mentally, emotionally. Go find a dojo. Book a class. If it's not the right fit, find another. Keep showing up. That's the secret: consistency. On this show, I talk a lot about accepting your cultural identity—learning to forgive your family, let go of resentment toward your mother culture, and finally accept yourself. But maybe I've been overthinking it. Maybe you just need to get your ass kicked… and then learn how to kick ass.Even if you're not into martial arts yet, it'll still help. You'll gain strength, confidence, discipline—and most importantly, you'll start respecting yourself. That's what I would've told my 15-year-old depressed, awkward, gooning, video game–addicted self. I'd throw him into a dojo and watch that flabby blob turn into a diamond stud. Now I'm 32. I'm in the best shape of my life. I go to the gym five days a week. I box. I just tried muay thai for the first time (shoutout to Byron). I'm a blue belt in Kyokushin karate with three years of training, and I wish I had started at 15. (Big shoutout to San Diego Kyokushin Karate and Sogyel Sensei—thank you!)Were you into Dragon Ball Z, Bruce Lee, Tekken, or Final Fantasy? I'm telling you: lean into your Main Character Syndrome. Become the hero of your own story. Martial arts will get you fit, teach you how to protect yourself, and give you the energy that says “I'm not someone to mess with.” You'll walk taller. You'll carry yourself with quiet, calm confidence. You won't be stuck in your head all the time. You'll be punching, kicking, sweating, growing. And yeah, if you're stronger and more confident, your dating life improves. If you're more disciplined, your work improves. Because how you do one thing is how you do everything.Martial arts makes you a better person. And if you're Asian, it connects you to a deep, ancient legacy. If you're not Asian, you're still joining a global tradition. The Ancestors will smile on you.Channel your pain—rage, sadness, neglect, confusion—into one clean punch of pure positive intent. A kamehameha wave from your soul. Change your life. Then change the world. Here's the twist: there is no solution to the identity struggle. Because it was never a problem. It only has power when you obsess over it. Once you move differently, live with strength and purpose, that struggle starts to fade. You've just proven to yourself that you're capable. That you can do pushups, throw a kick, protect your loved ones, and make a difference.Do it for 15-year-old you. Do it for your future self. Do it for the ones you love. Do it for your ancestors. Do it for love.Fantastic video if you want to get started in martial arts:DAY ONE | What I'd Do If I Was Starting From ScratchBruce Lee: Be like water (Inspirational)Support the show

Energy is everything. If we don't have energy we can't do much of anything. It's important for you to have energy not just for yourself, but so you're there for others. Furthermore, we may have energy — but what if we're full of negatively-charged energy? Students of many Okinawan, Japanese, and Korean martial arts styles — including Shotokan, Taekwondo, Aikido, Karate, Goju-ryu, Kobudo, Kendo, Kyokushin, and Judo — use a kihup (sometimes spelled kiai, kihap, or kyup) to startle an opponent, intimidate, or to exude confidence. Kihup comes from two root words. "Ki" is energy or life force. "Hup" means to gather or concentrate. Therefore, a kihup is a gathering or concentration of energy and power. A kihup serves many purposes, but it's always synchronized with movement. It conjures up greater force when striking. It protects our bodies by exhaling and preventing getting the wind knocked out of us if we get hit. It intimidates an opponent or assailant. And it increases our confidence while relieving anxiety as it releases negative energy at the same time it's "working in" good energy. Tim and Steve talk about this amazing burst of air, which some even call a spirit shout.

How well do you know yourself? It is said we are but a collection of memories, interactions and an ego. But does the way we are experienced by others align with our view of ourselves? In episode 14 of the B-side, I discuss this topic with Joe Hart. An organisational psychologist with a passion for understanding what makes us tick, our motivations, and the behaviours that lead us to success in life and our careers.Joe has a Bachelor of Psychology with Honours, and a Master degree in Organisational Psychology from UNSW. He has worked for Gallup, Chandler Macleod, and Samsung as an executive coach, senior consultant and employee engagement expert. He now runs his own consultancy, True Perspective. Where he helps people from a wide range of industries, find their core strengths and be more effective as leaders. We talk about the first step of personal development being a choice between living in blissful ignorance or confronting the truth. Akin to taking the red or blue pill in the Matrix, Joe believes that knowing the truth is essential if we are to grow and reach our true potential. He discusses why it's essential to understand how others experience us, in order to identify the things that are misaligned with reality, our sense of self or purpose. And the things we can do to create the realignment needed to grow.He is a fascinating guy with an eclectic background, growing up in Byron Bay and Lismore with his dad, who was a professional clown and entertainer. Jo is also a highly experienced juggler, an expert conversationalist, a Kyokushin karate enthusiast, and a father of four awesome kids to his Japanese Australian wife.We had a profound and insightful conversation, and I found it really helpful, given the craziness that's going on in the world right now. The Great Glass Sea (Grove Press) In The Course of Human Events (Soft Skull Press) Join us for a captivating reading from two dynamic writers of fiction. Josh Weil's critically acclaimed 2009 novella collection The New Valley was the winner of the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction, a National Book Foundation “5 Under 35” selection, and a New York Times Editor's Choice. He follows this success with his debut novel, The Great Glass Sea, an epic, dystopian tale inspired by the true story of Agrikombinat Moskovsky, an area on the outskirts of Moscow that was transformed into a 24 hour greenhouse. Set in an alternate present, Weil spins a tale of brotherly love steeped in Russian folklore that will appeal to fans of Cormac McCarthy's The Road and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, beautifully illustrated throughout with Weil's own line drawings. In this thrilling debut novel - equal parts satire and morality play - Mike Harvkey shines a sharp light on the dark and radical underbelly of the floundering American Midwest. As he leads us down the violent spiral of a desperate youth, he explores with unflinching acuity the ugly nature of hate, the untempered force of personality, and the sometimes horrific power of having someone believe in you. Praise for Josh Weil "Weil meticulously imagines people and their histories, and presents them as a product of their places. This is perhaps the hardest thing for a fiction writer of any age, working in any form, to accomplish.."--Anthony Doerr, New York Times Book Review "[Weil] gives voice to those without, to those entombed on forgotten hillsides, to those orphaned and tending calves and tractors, reminding us that no matter how isolated, how lonely, tender hearts burn everywhere, they burn bright, and they burn on."--Don Waters, The Believer Praise for Mike Harvkey "With this stunning debut, a major new talent bursts upon the world of American Letters. In the Course of Human Events is as brave as it is brilliant, as unsettling as it is important, and unlike anything else I've read. Mike Harvkey writes scenes of uncommon imagination, characters that leap to life at a single stroke. They will grab you in a bear hug, or by the throat (and sometimes both), and carry you along through a story every bit as gripping. A fearless exploration of an uncomfortable corner of the human heart--and an America little examined and even less understood--this is an important novel. Add to that the fact that it's also so damn funny and here comes one hell of a book." - Josh Weil, author of "The New Valley" "In the Course of Human Events is a dark, and yet compassionate gaze into the frustrated, violent, and broken heart of America. Mike Harvkey has written a gripping, bold and daring novel unlike any I've had the pleasure of reading before."--Dinaw Mengestu, MacArthur Genius Fellow and author of "How to Read the Air" and "The Wonderful Things that Heaven Bears" Josh Weil is the author of the The Great Glass Sea (Grove, 2014) and The New Valley (Grove, 2009), a New York Times Editors Choice that won the Sue Kaufman Prize from The American Academy of Arts and Letters, the New Writers Award from the GLCA, and a “5 Under 35” Award from the National Book Foundation. Weil's other writing has appeared in Granta, Esquire, One Story, The Sun, and The New York Times. A recipient of fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, MacDowell, Bread Loaf and Sewanee Writers' Conferences, he has been Distinguished Visiting Writer at Bowling Green State University and Grisham Writer-in-Residence at the University of Mississippi. He lives in the northern the Sierra Nevada mountains. Mike Harvkey grew up in rural northwest Missouri, near the city of Independence, a crystal meth stronghold long before Breaking Bad. When he moved to New York in 2001 to attend Columbia's Creative Writing MFA Program as a Bingham Fellow, he began training Kyokushin, a brutal form of martial art known for bare-knuckle fighting, and was promoted to black belt in 2006. One of his short stories won Zoetrope All-Story Magazine's short fiction contest; others have been published in Mississippi Review and Alaska Quarterly Review.
