What Happened Next: a podcast about newish books

My guest on this episode is Kyo Maclear. Kyo is an award-winning novelist, essayist, and children's author. Her books have been translated into eighteen languages and published in over twenty-five countries, and have garnered nominations from the Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction, the Governor General's Literary Awards, the TD Canadian Children's Literature Awards, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards, the Amazon.ca First Novel Award, and the National Magazine Awards. Her most recent book is Unearthing: A Story of Tangled Love and Family Secrets, published by Knopf Canada in 2023. That book won the Governor General's Literary Award for Nonfiction. The Washington Post called Unearthing “a moving account of a daughter's struggle to know her mother before she loses her.” Kyo and I talk about her tendency, as a writer and as a person, to seek out beauty and optimism, about starting to write a memoir even as the events it depicts are still happening, and about how the publication of Unearthing has allowed her to stop seeking to resolve some of the family secrets it explores. This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus.Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Used with permission. Hosted on Acast.   Welcome to Season 4, Episode 41! We have two guests today… award-winning author Kyo Maclear and award-winning illustrator Gracey Zhang. Their latest collaboration is the whimsical picture book Noodles on a Bicycle published by Penguin Random House Children's. It was released on August 27, 2024, so you can go out and get it now. It's a great book that provides a historical snapshot into Tokyo's bicycle food delivery people, or demae who were amazingly skilled at balancing a tower of hot noodle soup bowls on their shoulders while steering their bicycle through the crowded city streets. Based on memories from Kyo's childhood, the book is the perfect pairing of poetic words and detailed, captivating illustrations. In our conversation, Kyo and Gracey meet for the first time and share about their careers, their latest collaboration, what they enjoy about working with each other, and so much more. Hello and welcome to this week's episode where my guest is Kyo Maclear. Kyo is an author and her latest book is centred around family secrets, her mother and how gardening shaped their relationship and helped her frame their mutual experiences. About Unearthing Kyo Maclear's Unearthing: A Story of Tangled Love & Family Secrets is published on 7th March 2024. It's a gripping and emotionally eloquent memoir about a family secret revealed by a DNA test, the lessons learned in its aftermath, and the transformative possibilities of growing plants. A memoir of inheritance that goes far beyond heredity, Unearthing is about what happens when we give up the watered, weeded, and pruned plots of our family histories and embrace a more expansive view of kinship. Told through the passage of seasons with exquisite illustrations by the author, it is a tender testimony to the ineradicable love between a mother and daughter for readers of Michelle Zauner's Crying in H Mart and Katherine May's Wintering. When Kyo Maclear receives the result of a DNA test showing that she and the father who raised her, whose death she is grieving, are not biologically related, she is suddenly a detective in her own life, desperately seeking answers from her ailing mother whose memories and English are failing.  Maclear no longer speaks Japanese, her mother's first language, so she turns to her mother's second fluent tongue: the wild and green language of gardening, to provide them with a way of connecting. This beautifully constructed, intricate memoir is a work as unique as its author, and yet, movingly, achingly relatable. About Kyo Maclear Kyo is an award-winning novelist, essayist, and children's author. Her books have been translated into eighteen languages and published in over twenty-five countries. She is the author of the hybrid memoir Birds Art Life (2017,) and winner of the Trillium Book Award. She holds a doctorate in environmental humanities and is on faculty at the University of Guelph Creative Writing MFA. Spork is a great example of how one can be unique. Even though he doesn't belong in any category, he still has his own special purpose.

This week Seth is Joined by author Lloyd Jones, and parent Tuesday Tanner in a discussion about how to talk to kids about depression. Special thanks to Alison Corbett who recorded with us as well, but unfortunately due to technical difficulties, we couldn't include her audio. However she did send in some questions that we reference during the episode! Also, as people who interact with kiddos know, sometimes unexpected things happen! Tuesday's kiddo ended up having to be with them for the recording, so please excuse the toddler babbles! Rashin and I have been planning to record a conversation some time, but I don't think that either of us anticipated that it would end up being recorded live in front of conference attendees at the American Library Association’s annual conference in June. Kyo Maclear and Byron Eggenschwiler (@byronegg) share OPERATIC, a graphic novel they made together. Actually, it’s more accurate to say that, as with making picture books, Kyo wrote OPERATIC’s story in words and dialogue and left space for Byron to tell the story through paneled illustrations. The story in OPERATIC centers on a girl named Charlie and her teacher’s assignment to identify a song to include in the “soundtrack of our lives”. Emile, Charlie’s classmate and, consequently, Charlie’s crush, is also searching, but not for a song. Luka has been missing from school, and no one’s quite sure why, but not many are searching on his account. And then there’s Maria Callas, renowned opera singer, who has her own story to tell. Where Kyo ties narratives together with thread, Byron maps colors to transition in and out of different stories for an effect that I felt showed great care for both the characters and the reader. I’ve long admired the work done by Ashia Ray in her book curating website called Books For Littles. Her list of children’s books that help children understand privilege is TOTAL FIRE:  http://www.booksforlittles.com/silence-is-violence/   She opens up about her own story and why she started doing this work. We talked about why books are a disarming way to talk to children about hard topics like privilege and oppression. I asked her how we can help change the problem of the children’s lit industry being majority white and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Rick Riordan has actually done a great job of leveraging his own fame to boost the stories of those who live a marginalized existence - how encouraging! Ashia shares her favorite book list and children’s books, but her heart and soul shines through this interview.   Links (affiliates included): Ashia Ray’s website, Books for Littles - http://www.booksforlittles.com Rick Riordan Presents http://rickriordan.com/rick-riordan-presents/   Book list for Misfits - http://www.booksforlittles.com/misfits/   Drawn Together by Minh Le - https://amzn.to/2LEQPlS   Spork by Kyo Maclear - https://amzn.to/2GIVRPK Books for Littles Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=8124582&redirect_uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.booksforlittles.com%2Fmisfits%2F&utm_medium=widget   Deb Reese of American Indians In Children's Literature (focuses on Indigenous representation) https://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/   Zetta Eliot - example of a self- & micropress-author working to fill the creating books beyond the big 5 publishers https://www.zettaelliott.com/   Lydia X.Z.
