There have been some big changes since the last issue, with editor David Shaftel and art director Larry Buchanan both leaving the magazine, and a more commercial emphasis across the pages, with a big Gucci photo shoot on the cover and inside, and a partnership with Seoul-based cultural creators Ssoldot. It's all part of a plan to take advantage of what Steph calls, “the convening power of the magazine”, and in this conversation she outlines their plan for making it more commercially successful, while expanding further into events, merchandise, and other activities based around tennis.

Dave Isay, founder and president of StoryCorps, reflects on 20 years of stories produced by StoryCorps. Larry Buchanan, graphics editor and reporter at The New York Times, talks about the "extremely detailed map" he made of New York City neighborhoods, and what the map, neighborhood names and fuzzy (and sharp!) borders say about, as he writes, "gentrification, displacement, inequality, status." Jill Lepore, professor of American History at Harvard University, staff writer at The New Yorker, host of the podcasts The Last Archive and Elon Musk and the author of several books, including These Truths and her latest, The Deadline: Essays (Liveright, 2023), talks about her latest collection of essays, most of which focused on the relationship between America's past and its polarized present. In this episode, Dr. Camille Clare, the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, joins Drs. Mark Hoffman and Amy Park to discuss social determinants of health in the field of OB/GYN. --- EARN CME Reflect on how this Podcast applies to your day-to-day and earn free AMA PRA Category 1 CMEs: https://earnc.me/WSaAqq --- SHOW NOTES Dr. Clare identifies social determinants of health as factors that prevent patients from accessing healthcare multiple times. She describes examples as housing (e.g., safe environments to live and raise families, school district locations), access to transportation, and occupation. The physicians discuss the impact of social determinants of health in the field of OB/GYN, involving how certain conditions (i.e., rates of preterm birth, infertility, and cancer) present. The group also acknowledges the concept of “political determinants of health,” which involves policies that lead to certain health outcomes, such as redlining and how it has contributed to food insecurity and many other negative effects. The physicians also discuss how groups are addressing the downstream effects of health inequities. Dr. Clare is personally involved in lobbying and encourages those around her to advocate at the local, state, and federal levels to improve policy. In addition, Dr. Clare utilizes social media as a way to promote health equity and empower students/trainees to make positive impacts on their communities. The episode ends with Dr. Clare expressing current improvements among the medical community when it comes to addressing social determinants of health and health inequities. Ultimately, Dr. Clare is grateful that the medical community is now more open to discuss difficult conversations that focus on improving patient care. She has also appreciated the active effort to make the medical school recruitment process more inclusive in order to diversify the future physician workforce. --- RESOURCES Dr. Camille A Clare: @cclareMDMPH (https://twitter.com/cclareMDMPH) Claire Cain Miller, Sarah Kliff, Larry Buchanan. “Childbirth Is Deadlier for Black Families Even When They're Rich, Expansive Study Finds” The New York Times. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/02/12/upshot/child-maternal-mortality-rich-poor.html

Joshua is a Christian hard rock/AOR band that formed in 1980 and is centered on guitarist Joshua Perahia. Despite being based in Los Angeles, CA they are probably best known outside of the United States. The band's first release was entitled The Hand Is Quicker Than the Eye, which referred to Perahia's guitar skills and songwriting ability, was released by Enigma Records in 1983. The single "November Is Going Away" was the band's biggest hit, achieving No. 1 status in Japan. Perahia had a religious experience at a Hal Lindsey–lead Bible study in 1983, and converted to Protestant Christianity from his Greek Orthodox upbringing.Perahia put together a new band for his 2nd album, Surrender, which included singer Jeff Fenholt. Surrender was released in 1985. Lyrically, the album marked a change in the band's style to lyrics which were evangelical in nature. Rob Rock was involved with their third album on RCA Records, Intense Defense. In 1988, Intense Defense, which was recorded at Dierks Studios and produced initially by Eddie Kramer and then Dieter Dierks (Scorpions fame) was characterized by the editor of HM Magazine as being "probably the best AOR melodic metal album in the universe." It sold well worldwide, but not in the United States. In 1995, the group re-formed and they released one album under the name M Pire, Chapter One, though it was never released in the US. The band then expanded its name back to Joshua Perahia. The addition of Joshua's last name was to avoid confusion as so many bands were using the name Joshua at the time. The band lacked a permanent vocalist and hired Alex Ligertwood of Santana to fill the spot on the follow-up Something to Say in 2001. However, while in production, the band recruited Jerry Gabriel and re-recorded the vocals. As a result, the album (except four tracks) contains Gabriel's lead vocals, and Ligertwood's vocals are available on a re-release. One song, "The First and the Last", appeared in the Larry Buchanan–directed movie The Copper Scroll of Mary Magdalene in 2004.2012 saw the release of the band's latest work, entitled “Resurrection” and featured vocals from Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen, Ring of Fire, Shining Black, etc.). While Joshua still writes music today for a possible future release he has shifted his focus to his son and their passion for vintage muscle cars and exotic cars as well. It's a passion that was ignited when Joshua was just 13 years old. The fact that Joshua still writes music means that fans can be hopeful of seeing a new recording in the future but for now please enjoy this episode of The Jersey Guys Podcast!

In this episode, we talk to Lauren Schandevel, a low-income student at the University of Michigan who grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Warren, Michigan. Lauren is a really remarkable person, and in our interview we chat about what it was like to grow up in her part of Macomb County, which always seems to crop up every election cycle whenever news outlets want to figure out what’s happening in the Rust Belt. We talk about Lauren’s experience moving back and forth between worlds, between her working-class home and the school she transferred to, where she took classes and hung out with people from wealthier backgrounds. We talk about school, family, friends, and the ecstatic and dismal pangs of adolescence.   We spend a fair amount of time talking about what it’s like being a low-income student attending a public university where the median family income for students' families is over three times what it is for families in Lauren's hometown. And we also talk at length about what Lauren has been doing to bring a class-based analysis to higher education, including starting "Being Not Rich at UM," an open-source guide for low-income students like herself who are trying to navigate college life at UM. We discuss what it means to Lauren, and what it means for class politics in higher education, that this guide went viral, drew national attention, and has even inspired students at other universities to author similar guides.    Additional links/info below...
