As female dental practice owners, we love helping others and putting others first. However, we often forget that we also need to set boundaries and take care of ourselves so we can serve our employees and patients in beneficial ways. In this episode, I welcome Dr. Laura Brenner who helps dental practice owners recognize what burnout looks like and make important decisions regarding continuing on their journey as a dental practice owner … or not. As dental practice owners, we often create and carry great levels of stress which can lead to burnout! We sometimes compromise how we want to serve because we try to conform to how we believe others are viewing us. However, as leaders, it is essential to give ourselves permission to design our practices the way we want them to be. And this includes trusting others to do their jobs. Situations may arise that are beyond our control, but we have to give ourselves the grace to know that we can do things better in the future. Taking time to create boundaries and define how we want to serve others in our lives can create clarity and help us define how we, along with our employees and patients, can be winners.  Are you ready to design and plan your life right now according to where you are right now? Why wait? Listen to this episode so you can start living right now, and you may be surprised at what doors open to you because you are serving in the capacity you want! Highlights from this episode: How burnout happens within dental practice ownership The predictability of the brain and how it wants us to conform for our safety Defining how you want to serve and creating boundaries It's okay to say, “No.” Giving yourself permission to run your practice the way you want to  Being a leader and trusting others around you to do their jobs The art of developing yourself right now Resources and links mentioned:  Laura Brenner's website: Lolabees Career Coaching (contains the link to her free guide “6 Reasons You're Burnt Out in Your Dental Career”) Watch Laura's podcasts on YouTube:  Love Your Practice! Are you feeling burned out, stressed, or overwhelmed from your dental practice? My guest on this episode knows exactly how you feel! Dr. Laura Brenner holds a very unique place in dentistry. She was a dentist for 10 years and, after burning out, left the practice to follow her passions along another path. She is now a career coach, and in this episode, we discuss some common concerns and solutions for those dealing with the challenges and frustrations facing dentists today. Have you ever considered the idea that sometimes our problems with practicing dentistry come from within ourselves? We often create a desire to please others and have to deal with our own perfectionism. However, there are steps you can take to relieve some of these stresses. It is critical to not sacrifice yourself to your work - it can lead to resentment and worry. Rather, it is necessary to look at yourself and figure out what is important to you, right now, in your own life. As Dr. Brenner says, “We all have to define success for ourselves. That's the first thing we need to do.” You don't have to settle into and feel stuck in your current role of work. Give yourself the permission to move past what is holding you back! And that may mean making some changes. Are you in love with your dentistry? If not, now is the time to do something about it. From side gigs to a career change, you can make a change in your life so you are having FUN! There are ways you can enrich other people's lives other than solely through your practice of dentistry. What is most important is that you find balance and fulfillment in your life - sometimes adding a side gig can improve your dentistry. Shift your energy, and be willing to change. You CAN design your career so you can align it with your life, creating happiness for yourself. Are YOU still having fun with dentistry? This episode will help you find contentment within whatever path you choose for your life. Listen to this episode now to help you find clarity and happiness! Highlights from this episode: Recognizing your career should be FUN and the solutions available to you if you are not in love with dentistry How a side gig can help you find balance and fulfillment - and improve your practice of dentistry The necessity to NOT sacrifice yourself to work Creating boundaries (from others as well as yourself) and a vision and consistency for yourself Some of the biggest challenges facing dentists The necessity of choosing your self-talk Self-examination of why you practice dentistry Resources and links mentioned: Dr. Laura Brenner's Facebook page: Lolabees Career Coaching Dr. Laura Brenner's Facebook group: Dentist Side Gigs Dr. Laura Brenner's website: Lolabees Career Coaching Dr. Laura Brenner's blog: 10 Reasons Your Dentist Probably Hates You Too Watch Laura's podcasts on YouTube: Love Your Practice! It was an instant success, going viral overnight!Dr. Brenner's venture into blogging opened a new door, as she realized she wasn't alone in her quiet battle in the stressful career of dentistry. That realization led to the founding of Lolabees Career Coaching (lolabeescareercoaching.com).In her work there, Dr. Brenner has helped dental professionals find joy in their lives again,..leading them in journeys of self-discovery. She is also of course, a huge fan of finding side gigs!Take a listen, and learn how you do can escape the destructive grips of perfectionism, and people pleasing, and focus on yourself (is there a blog in your future?!)Time to put an end to the "Sunday Scaries" for good!

With all of the time, money, and energy needed to pursue a career in dentistry, it's natural that we all learn to define WHO we are by WHAT we do. That's great when everything at work goes well, and we get to love the identity we've claimed for ourselves; but when our work creates problems, we define ourselves by that too and injure our self-esteem, increase anxiety, and even create depression. Learn how creating your personal identity as more than a dental professional can bring more happiness and freedom into your life. Objectives 1. Modify how we define ourselves as individuals.   2. Choose tools to help build self-worth and increase stability and happiness. Find out more about us on www.thedentalfestival.com

Dr. Parul Dua Makkar joins Dentist Career Coach and Cancer Patient Warrior/Survivor, Dr. Laura Brenner. Topics discussed: Laura and Manu's first connection. Laura's impression from Manu's last article on DentalTown. The importance of feeling understood by others. The barriers to leaving clinical practice. Without fear, there is no courage. The definition of a warrior. Getting comfortable with the idea of dying. If you think about your life, what do you want the story to be? Becoming more comfortable with death, as a culture. The beauty of small things - one bite at a time, one breath at a time. Anger and grief. Karma. Balancing gratitude + striving. One's illness is community-changing. Who are you when you are stripped of identity and constructs? The problem with always trying to be positive. The patient's burden to help others feel comfortable. Do you ever feel completely unhappy but also stuck in your current career? You try to brainstorm options for making a change, but none of the other options seem like quite the right fit. Either they wouldn't make you enough money, you aren't sure you'd actually be happy doing them, or you worry it might fail.My guest this week, Dr. Laura Brenner went through this dilemma as well. Dr. Brenner practiced clinical dentistry for 10 years before leaving and now works as a career coach helping other dentists find JOY in their careers. But her decision to leave dentistry, wasn't so easy or straightforward. She went through years of feeling burnt out, paralyzed, afraid and stuck before she finally decided that something HAS to change. During this episode, Laura and Chelsea talk about some of the key shifts she had to make to find joy in her career. They also discuss how perfectionism keeps you stuck, how to get started when you aren't sure what to do, moving through imposter syndrome, giving yourself credit and building courage, and so much more. This is a powerful and inspiring conversation that is going to help you see your life and career differently. On this episode of the Raving Patients Podcast, Len sits down with Laura Brenner to discuss the realities of your dental career. Many of us spend our entire dental careers taking care of everyone else. We want so badly to make our staff and patients happy that, in the process, we often do it at our own expense. When people pleasing and perfectionism take over, we end up carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders, and that pressure starts to break us down. It can lead to burnout and career dissatisfaction, which is unsustainable.  If we can begin to draw boundaries, take care of ourselves, and understand how we really want to practice, we can design a career on our terms. We can better work through our stress and create more career satisfaction.    Takeaways from this episode include: There is no one size fits all approach to "being a dentist". How people pleasing can increase burnout. How the dentist's career satisfaction can affect the entire business.   Dr. Laura Brenner graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in 2001 and moved to Denver to establish her dental roots. She worked in private practice for 10 years until she left clinical dentistry behind for good. As the author of the Lolabees blog and “10 Reasons Your Dentist Probably Hates You Too,” she began connecting with other dentists from around the world who wanted more from their careers. This work inspired her to become a Certified Professional Coach who is passionate about helping dentists find joy in their careers again.

NOTES She practiced dentistry for 10 years but noticed by year 7 she was depressed and unhappy with her career path; After seeking help and finding a career coach, she shifted her career to coaching Feeling critical and cynical, disillusionment about your job, and not feeling that you are making an impact are all signs of burnout that you should look out for Perfectionism is not sustainable or achievable and gives us more anxiety when we can't be perfect You have to make choices about what your priorities are and decide if you are on the path you want to be on You have to work through the fear of thinking you are a failure, disappointing family, or feel that your identity is solely as a dentist If you don't think you are financially ready to get out of dentistry, learn to live on less or understand that the exchange of money for freedom is a decision that can affect your well-being The first change you make to your career may just be a bridge towards something else, and may not be a permanent career Take care of yourself first, eat well, sleep, exercise, have quiet time, and make sure you are happy with who you are Everyone has a power within themselves to become better, they just need to find it, whether through experience or self-revelation. She does a complimentary consultation to see if we are a good fit and what your goals are She does a minimum 3 months coaching one on one; you will meet every other week during the program She has now partnered with a physician who does career coaching as well and will be bringing a virtual one-day seminar designed to help you realize how your skills can be utilized in new ways or industries NIFTY DEAL She is doing a free group coaching session on September 13th so you can see what she is all about.
