In this episode, Dr. Nichola Conlon, a molecular biologist specializing in cellular aging, joins the Conscious Fertility Podcast to explore the pivotal role of NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and mitochondrial health in fertility and overall cellular vitality. Dr. Conlon explains how declining NAD levels with age can impact mitochondrial function, leading to fatigue, inflammation, and impaired cellular repair—factors that influence reproductive health and biological aging. We discuss how chronic inflammation depletes NAD levels and why relying solely on NAD precursors like NMN and NR may not be enough. In this fascinating episode of the Conscious Fertility Podcast, Dr. Lorne Brown is joined by Dr. Jaap van der Wal, Ph.D., a medical doctor and renowned expert in embryology and anatomy. Dr. van der Wal brings a unique perspective to the study of the human embryo, not just as a biological entity but as a spiritual being that develops through a profound process involving both body and consciousness. Dr. van der Wal introduces us to his philosophy of "Embryosophy," where he applies the Goethean phenomenological approach to human embryology, viewing the embryo as a reflection of spiritual and physical forces working in unison. He delves into the idea that conception is not merely a biological act but a spiritual event where the body and soul unite. We also discuss the powerful symbolism of birth as a process of death and rebirth, the connection between embryology and life's larger spiritual questions, and the lessons we can learn from our own development in the womb. Key takeaways: The human embryo represents the union of body, spirit, and consciousness. Conception involves not just biology but the connection of spirit. Birth symbolizes a "death" from the placenta, a transition to the next phase of life. Our bodies are continuously shaped by spiritual forces throughout life. Studying embryology reveals profound lessons about balance and purpose in life. Dr. Japp Van Der Wal's Bio: Jaap Van Der Wal, Ph.D., is a retired medical doctor and former associate professor of Anatomy and Embryology at Maastricht University. His expertise lies in functional anatomy, connective tissue, fascia, and proprioception. His passion is human embryology, viewing the body as a process developing over time. He applies Goethean phenomenology and dynamic morphology to explore the embryo's role in human existence. In this insightful episode, Dr. Lyndon Chang delves into the innovative world of minimal stimulation IVF, commonly known as mini IVF. He discusses its benefits for patients with diminished ovarian reserve or advanced maternal age. Dr. Chang explains how using lower doses of medication can result in more efficient and targeted cycles, potentially optimizing both the quality and quantity of eggs retrieved that make it to blastocyst as normal embryos. Beyond the medical aspects, he emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to fertility, considering factors like stress management and overall health. Additionally, Dr. Chang addresses the controversy and skepticism surrounding minimal stimulation IVF, highlighting the need for more comprehensive research to validate its efficacy. Tune in to gain a deeper understanding of mini IVF and its role in modern fertility treatments. Key takeaways: ● Mini IVF uses lower medication doses to stimulate egg production, leading to more efficient cycles. ● It optimizes egg quality and quantity, especially for those with diminished ovarian reserve or advanced maternal age. ● Minimal stimulation aims to avoid ovarian overstimulation, enhancing the chances of success. ● Comparable success rates to traditional IVF, but more research is needed for definitive evidence. Dr. King, a physical therapist and mind-body practitioner, shares her personal triumph over a decade of debilitating illness and how it led to the founding of the Primal Trust Academy and Community. We traverse the importance of brain retraining, vagus nerve toning, and trauma-informed attachment repair techniques, which collectively offer a beacon of hope for those entrenched in the throes of chronic symptoms and trauma patterns. Listen in as we unpack the crucial role of holistic approaches in the rebalancing of the nervous system and the journey through trauma healing. Dr. King and I shed light on the power of education in fostering commitment to the healing process, the necessity of a well-equipped toolkit, and the sequential strategy of integrating somatic experiencing, attachment repair, and more. This episode illuminates why certain therapies may fall short without the foundation of self-regulation and the resilience that comes from a deeper understanding of our bodies' stress responses and their impact on health. In this episode, we speak with Dr. David Berceli, a renowned expert in trauma intervention and conflict resolution, and the creator of Tension and Trauma Release Exercises (TRE). Dr. Berceli shares his insights on how stress can impact the body, and how this is especially relevant for those struggling with infertility. He explains that the trauma from a stressful event is not from the event itself, but rather from the sense of losing safety and connection. This loss of safety and connection is particularly relevant for individuals trying to grow their families, as the stress of infertility can be comparable to that experienced by those with a terminal illness or cancer. If you're struggling to get pregnant, you may feel like you've tried everything and are running out of options. But have you considered doing a deeper dive into looking for the underlying causes of your infertility? In this episode, Lorne speaks with Acubalance's clinical director of naturopathic medicine, Dr. Kali MacIsaac ND, about the importance of functional medicine fertility testing. Naturopathic doctors like Dr. MacIsaac don't just look for results within the "normal" range – they aim for optimal or functional ranges that give you the best chance of success. As she puts it, "Would you rather be in the bottom 10% percentile or the top 10% percentile? When it comes to fertility and creating a healthy baby, we want you to be in the top percentile of ranges for most tests." Dr. MacIsaac will explain how comprehensive naturopathic fertility testing looks beyond just the surface-level symptoms of infertility and digs deeper to identify the root causes. By leaving no stone unturned, you can take targeted action to improve your fertility and increase your chances of success. Dr. MacIsaac will also share how simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference in fertility, and why adding functional medicine testing to your conventional fertility workup can be beneficial. "Starting a family is a dream for many, and it's understandable to feel discouraged if you're having trouble getting pregnant. With functional medicine fertility testing, you can take a proactive approach to understanding your current fertility status and identify any underlying issues that may be impacting your ability to get pregnant. Don't let your dreams of parenthood slip away – take control and pursue them with confidence." When it comes to the fertility journey, it's more like a marathon than a sprint. And just like a marathon requires weeks and months of training to run a good race, creating healthy embryos requires preconception training, too. Our goal is not just for you to start the race but to cross the fertility finish line with a baby in your arms.
