On this week's #MondayMile podcast, I link up with former England national rugby union team captain @Chrisrobshawrugby to talk marathons, mental health and forming new routines after retirement.  Chris has had an impressive career, having played for London's Harlequins and Sdlegion as well as captaining the national team. He announced his retirement in October 2022, and opens up to me about adjusting to life post-rugby; from his shifting identity and physique, to finding new hobbies and challenges. We talk about how he pushed himself to run the London Marathon earlier this year - and why he'll never do it again  We also dive into the current state of rugby, discussing the recent protocol changes on head injuries and concussion, the stigma around the sport, and how he feels about the future of rugby. Away from rugby, Chris also reveals a softer side – who would've guessed that he loves romcoms as much as I do? I loved chatting with Chris! He's chill and down to earth – a real joy to be around. He might not be down for another London marathon, but count me in for a romcom marathon anytime. Our chat is available to listen to now on all podcast platforms . #mondaymilepodcast #chrisrobshaw #rugby #rugbyworldcup #harlequins Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. How do elite athletes find the motivation to kick start their week come rain or shine? How do celebrities deliver no matter what the time of day? What knowledge can they pass on? Each episode drops on a Monday morning as a bitesize piece of content and weekly dose of motivation - right when you need it. Aimee will meet each of her guests for a walk and a chat and over the course of the mile she will find out how they cope on a Monday morning - their idiosyncrasies, breakfast routines, alarm noises - and how, when they need to, find the motivation to kick-on through the week. Sharing some of Britain's greatest athletes, entrepreneurs, doctors, authors and broadcasters ' secrets on self-motivation, candid thoughts on what they struggle with and a sideways look at some of their more unusual morning habits. 1.33  Believe it or not, rest is a difficult concept for many of us to grasp. I have struggled with the idea of rest for most of my life. Even though the Lord established a pattern of work and rest throughout scripture, many leaders who are driven to succeed do not adequately maintain a healthy work-rest balance. God initiated a pattern for work and rest when He rested on the seventh day at Creation. Rest remains a great need in us even today. Mark 6:31 says, “And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.” Occasionally, we need to be able to step back and remember that we are designed to take a break; we are designed to rest. Hey there, I'm Ryan Franklin and this is Church Leader Made Simple. 1.32 I'm so excited to introduce the new tool I've created, The Christian Leader Blueprint! This resource is something that I've been working on for years. It's not so much the guide that I'm excited about but the model, the concept, the big picture that this tool creates. It has taken me years of personal experience, education, self-study, and trial and error (what most people refer to as blood, sweat, and tears) to put this concept together. I've received coaching from an executive coach, gone through counseling, coached and counseled others, and worked through many mistakes to create this tool. The Christian Leader Blueprint concept is now available in the form of a short guide on my website christianleadermadesimple.com. At almost thirty pages, the document is loaded with phenomenal information, and I'm giving it to you for FREE. Visit christianleadermadesimple.com to get this free guide. Through this blog post, I'll share more about how this blueprint can change your life. Hey there, I'm Ryan Franklin and this is Church Leader Made Simple. 1.31 I am a forward-looking person. I love to dream about the future. I like to envision goals and then work hard to pursue them. I love to put wheels on a dream; that's fun for me. I really think that's a healthy part of my personality. It's a gift that God gave me, but sometimes even our greatest gifts can become hindrances when we use them in unhealthy ways. My problem is that I get so focused on what is to come while working to make my dreams a reality that I sometimes forget to enjoy the moment. We have to be intentional about living in the present. Read until the end, and I will give you three steps to follow that will help you enjoy living in the present.Hey there, I'm Ryan Franklin and this is Church Leader Made Simple. 1.30 I want you to close your eyes (unless you're driving, of course). Imagine that you're ninety years old sitting in your recliner thinking about all of the years you've lived. You ask yourself, “Did I do anything significant? Did my life really matter? What did I live for? Did I fulfill what the Lord wanted me to do? Why was it important that I lived my life?” The Lord isn't going to force you to find your calling or His vision for your life. He's not going to twist your arm or stand over you until you make a move, waiting for you to fulfill His will. In my final years, I hope I can look back on a life well-lived. There's a drive within me that pushes me toward a cause. I'm driven to see the will of the Lord accomplished in the hearts of people. I hope at the end of my life I will have responded to that cause and fulfilled the will of God. Hopefully, this session will give you some insight and practical tips on how to find your God-given vision while living your life devoted to accomplishing God's will. Hey there, I'm Ryan Franklin and this is Church Leader Made Simple. 1.29 As human beings and especially as leaders, we're often required to tell people difficult things. The only way to avoid having tough conversations is to live in seclusion, which is not really healthy or possible. We may not want to have these difficult conversations because our natural inclination is to avoid conflict; we know the news we're delivering is hard to hear, or we want to escape delegating a difficult task.I don't know about you, but I find it really difficult to tell people hard things. It's stressful. It drains my energy. Truthfully, it's one of the things I hate most about leadership. In this post, I want to share with you a simple formula that has helped me make tough conversations a little bit easier. Perhaps not all of the time, but most of the time you can successfully deliver negative news by using this simple formula.Hey there, I'm Ryan Franklin and this is Church Leader Made Simple. 1.28  Unhappiness, fear, anxiety, uncertainty, anger, loneliness, confusion, depression, emptiness, disconnectedness – these are all real feelings; and if you're like me, you've probably experienced some or all of these emotions and others as you've walked uncertain paths and experienced changes in life.God made us so that we could feel our feelings; He never intended us to ignore them. We're natural thinkers. We're natural feelers, but there are times when these feelings and emotions can disrupt our lives. Perhaps you get a little more anxious or overwhelmed than you should. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” If your mind is disrupted by the issues of life, this post is for you. 1.21 Most of us think of delegation as a relief of our own pressure. We think of it almost in a selfish way. Sure, it is a relief to us, but we also need to consider the fact that it's just as important for the other members of our team. If we don't release things into the care of others, then we, as leaders, don't give them the opportunity to be strategically involved in the vision of the church or organization. When we unnecessarily hold on to things, we stand the risk of not having a healthy work-life balance and possibly even burnout in the future. There's no way that we can do it all. We don't need to do everything. The health of our organizations depends on us to be good delegators.Hey there, I'm Ryan Franklin and this is Church Leader Made Simple. (NUMBER 1.14)Many times the Lord grows us through His word and through prayer; other times He chooses to use our pain to provide us opportunities for growth.  Not all of the time, but many times in my life, I probably could have avoided this pain if I had been a better person or better leader or if I would have made better decisions. Regardless of the reason, though, the Lord used these situations, these opportunities, to grow some internal part of my being. And, I must admit, many times the type of growth that happened would have never come without having walked down that particular tough road in my life. Pain is inevitable.  We all experience it; it is part of making progress in ministry and life.  If we want to be where the Lord desires us to be, there is no way we can avoid the growth pain helps us achieve. Hey there, I'm Ryan Franklin and this is Church Leader Made Simple.
