Luis Garcia - The Journey Story of a Learning Technologist Kicking off this episode with Luis Garcia by sharing a memorable quote by Jim Barksdale. "If we have data, let's look at data. If all we have are opinions, let's go with mine.” How true is that? Our lives are now measured consistently by data. How many clicks, impressions, shares, comments, open rate, and more. What does the data reveal about human behavior? People also have opinions and those matter because they reflect so much insight. Different ways of thinking, knowledge, experience, wisdom, problems and solutions. Luis kicked off the show by sharing that his love of learning started at an early age. He began learning how to program when he was 7 years old. His parents wanted him to focus on that as a career path. As he got older he discovered his real passion for music - FYI, he plays the guitar and keyboard. He and his twin brother came to the US with his parents visiting colleges with a focus on computer programming. The family visited top tier Ivey League schools and decided to visit Orlando on the way back. That is when Luis and his brother toured Full Sail. Now another twist in the career roller coaster happened. FS launched a new degree in digital media. This was a combination of music, graphics with a dash of virtual reality technology. To hear more about Luis career story, thoughts about 2030 and AI, listen to the WHOLE show. This one is an exciting story. #iHeartRadio #ApplePodcasts #GooglePlay #Spotify #Stitcher #Podbean #YouTube #Employers4Change #E4C #internships #radio #podcast #innovation #employers #smallbusiness #business #FutureOfWork #ValenciaCollegeRadio

In this week's podcast, Leila McKenzie-Delis, CEO and Founder of DIAL Global speaks to Clay Johnson, Senior Learning Technologist, University of the West of England."I think we need to change our educational framework...Modern education needs to address modern societal need. That process is happening within schools at the grassroots. It is happening organically because teachers fundamentally want to establish positive relationships with the people that they teach."You'll hear about:- Clay's personal and professional story including his childhood in a mixed race neighbourhood in South Africa in the 70s, his experience of apartheid, moving to the UK and his life since- How challenges experienced by minority groups are sometimes viewed through a distant lens, without full appreciation of what they go through and an understanding of the deep-seated legacy issues that arise- How Clay has modified his own behaviour like many others from minority communities have in response to the ramification of global events or lived experience, for example, making sure that people can see his hands or putting his hood down if he is out walking on his own- Clays thoughts on governmental responsibility as well as diversity and inclusion when it comes to education- Systemic failure within education due to cookie cutter models of success, leading to a need for the individual to be put back at the heart of education.- How policy, strategy and legislation can be used effectively but policy at high levels is created by politicians and not people who work at grassroots level with lived experience, thus leading to disconnect- The positive role models that contributed to Clay's lived experience despite some traumatic times- The importance of story-telling and actually talking about some of our lived experiences, especially the difficult, challenging onesContinue the conversation on LinkedIn

Quite a few of us are now used to ‘working from home' , it was good to find out about ‘learning from home' or ‘remote learning' which a lot of young people are having to do just now. David Gilmour, who is a ‘Learning Technologist' working in East Lothian, came into the pod to explain to Marysia what the challenges of supporting learners of all ages remotely. It is interesting to hear a little bit about the background and the changes which have happened between lockdowns. And a couple of preconceived ideas are shown to be mistaken. Elliott Masie is a successful Broadway Producer and head of the MASIE Learning Center, but that wasn't always the case. After Elliott failed at his first job of being an employee, he accepted the feedback from his boss as fuel to pursue his talents in positive ways. In this episode, Elliott describes his philosophy on accepting the chapters of life as they are. When we get to a fork in the road, we can become stuck on what we're “supposed to do” or what's the “right next move.” Elliott has a different perspective. He explains that life is structured in chapters and each chapter has a purpose and meaning to make you better. When it comes to failure, we don't process the failure in real time, we may never even understand it, but we are always impacted by it.
