EA - Why I'm still going out to bat for the EA movement post FTX by Gemma Paterson

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why I'm still going out to bat for the EA movement post FTX, published by Gemma Paterson on September 30, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. From the looks of it, next week might be rough for people who care about Effective Altruism. As CEA acting CEO Ben West pointed out on the forum: "Sam Bankman-Fried's trial is scheduled to start October 3, 2023, and Michael Lewis's book about FTX comes out the same day. My hope and expectation is that neither will be focused on EA . Nonetheless, I think there's a decent chance that viewing the Forum, Twitter, or news media could become stressful for some people, and you may want to pre-emptively create a plan for engaging with that in a healthy way. I really appreciated that comment since I didn't know that and I'm glad I had time to mentally prepare. As someone who does outward facing voluntary community building at my workplace and in London, I feel nervous. I've written this piece to manage that anxiety. I actually wrote a lot of it last year to process my feelings but now seems like a good time to share. Thoughts on EA after 2022 During the spring/summer of 2022, I was studying for my final ICAS Chartered Accountancy case study exams. They usually involve: Being given a scenario where you are the qualified accountant and have been asked to do some analysis for a group of companies. As you need to meet a minimum standard of Public Trust and Ethics to join an accountancy body, there is usually a dodgy character or two involved at the client company or at the firm that employs you. The dodgy characters are lax about controls and risk - asking you as the accountant to "look the other way" and the case is usually set up that there is an incentive for you as the accountant to do that. There are often weak internal controls at the company which make fraud more likely. Some examples of weak internal controls: Lack of segregation of duties - one employee has end-to-end control of a process without oversight Inadequate access controls - sensitive systems and data are not restricted to authorized personnel Circumvention of controls - existing controls are intentionally avoided or bypassed by employees Unsigned approvals - documents requiring sign-off are not properly authorized At the end, you submit your technical accounting, finance, tax, internal controls, and general business advice that was requested as part of the case study. You also need to submit an ethics memo which would outline your concerns about the dodgy people or controls. You'll be glad to hear that after going through lots of practice papers, I passed! Then three months later, the news on FTX dropped. I'm not going to outline it here since I imagine the audience for this are already familiar - if someone has a good summary, please drop it in the comments. It wasn't just FTX, around that time, information was released on Wytham Abbey, Bostrom and the Time sexual harassment scandals. For context, I'm mostly interested in expanding the reach of effective giving / EA impact methodologies and personally put a high discount rate on the future vs existing suffering, so, I didn't follow the FTX Future Fund that closely. My primary feelings at the end of 2022 were anger and embarrassment. Anger I'm annoyed I must answer questions about the damned castle. I did not buy the castle. None of the charities I recommend you donate to bought the castle. Yet in my community building work, I have to answer questions about the castle. It was handled poorly and I'm angry about it. When the Time article came out, I was running the London Women (and NBs) in EA group. Honestly, I incorrectly assumed it was just about EA in the Bay area so when it was revealed it was Owen Cotton-Barrett, that was a shock and tbh I was annoyed at a lot of the responses. In hindsight, I wish I'd created a sp...

Earlier in this series, we spoke about the Corporate world of IVF and how clinics around the world were consolidating, and what that meant for you the patient. In this episode, we're looking at the future of IVF and our first conversation is with Stuart Lavery, a senior consultant gynaecologist, a well-respected member of the global human fertility community, and a founding director of Aria Fertility, our second guest is Professor Nick Macklon, Medical Director of The London Women's clinic and Medical Advisor at Verso.  What we discussed:  IVF Changed over the last 10 years The biggest provider of IVF in the UK is a private equity  What we can learn from the US Fertility is an illness becoming demedicalised  How his clinic Aria - competes with the big chains Most of the big groups had the same success rates, same treatments - but mediocre customer experiences Using technology to enhance the patient experience.  How important it is for a patient to feel confident and comfortable  Tech changes that are here now and a huge amount coming tomorrow Tech companies who believe tech will trump biology Developments in the lab are around automation and minimization  IVF at Home - saliva test at home replacing coming into the clinic for blood, e- consenting, and home ultrasound  Important not to exacerbate inequalities in access to treatment There's no reason that the NHS can't be at cutting edge of technology given the patient volume it has coming through.  NHS clinics shouldn't access less, it should be the same standard whether you pay or access the NHS.  The decline in ‘Gentle IVF' Automated robotic ICSI The decline of IUI  - need to make sure the right treatment goes to the right patient Professor Nick Macklon explains how the incubator or the Uterine environment hasn't really been studied until now What is device monitoring? How research shows how much it fluctuates between women How does it impact embryo transfer How oxygen levels can change which can affect implantation How Secretions can also affect implantation What this means for the future of IVF treatment  Follow us on our socials!!! Maturepreneurial Podcast: Interviews with Older Entrepreneurs | Online Business Tips | Learn From Those Who Have Succeeded

Bridging the gap between science and spirituality, JJ Armstrong, founder of Transform2Alpha, has created a comprehensive life mastery blueprint with a military style edge. JJ’s career began in the British Army where she was one of the few women who graduated from the Army School of Physical Training to train soldiers. She spent more than eight years in the Royal Army Physical Training Corps training men for combat fitness and performance. Her interest in the mental side of training grew as she progressed in her career. Her self-reliance and the ability to think on her feet led her to spend time serving in Special Forces. Upon leaving the military, JJ started a fast-growing new trend: “personal training” in health clubs and gyms. The first person to offer this service in the UK, she was told by one of the biggest national health club chains, “It will never work!" But trusting your instincts pays off! JJ pursued her dream and built a business that quickly grew to a team of personal trainers 64-members strong. Her company trained thousands of clients and members; everyone from celebrities to housewives throughout a number of gyms and health clubs. Many top athletes and professionals benefited from JJ’s unique brand of training. JJ became interested in personal development from a young age through the Nightingale Conant catalogue of audio courses. She began studying hundreds of experts on everything from personal success to neuro-linguistic programming, hypnosis, mind control, sales, influence etc., adding to her library of tools. These studies led her to synthesize Pareto’s 80-20 principle, mind mapping, speed reading and advanced memory techniques into a unique brand of mental training. She discovered early on that she had the ability and the obsession to cut all “the fat away” and find the quickest, most efficient way to get the job done (INTJ style). One of JJ's private clients used her techniques to secure a license to practice as a physician (medical doctor) and the other used them to secure a license to fly planes (pilot). Always looking to evolve and have new experiences, JJ sold her business in her 30s to become an expat for the first time by studying in the U.S. It's an experience she has now had in three countries. While in the U.S., JJ proceeded to get the type of perma-tan she’d always dreamed about while studying for her master’s degree at the prestigious United States Sports Academy. She used principles of accelerated learning to earn her degree in half the regular time, with a 4.0 GPA. She will also tell other maturepreneurs out there that it is “never too late” to become a student or expat! After earning her degree, JJ took a position at the National Personal Training Institute in New York. She led a team of instructors that developed and certified personal trainers. JJ has also had extensive experience teaching new PTs how to train people of all ages to prevent injuries, including special populations with acute and chronic health considerations. JJ enjoyed her time teaching but felt that at her core she was an entrepreneur, not an employee. Once back in London, JJ formulated her metabolic functional training system into a brand. This brand grew to include a team of trainers in several locations in London – Mill Hill, Camden and Regent‘s Park. The London Women’s Bootcamp became a successful enterprise in a crowded market, due to its personalized service and utmost efficiency. This was a concept that she would later turn into Powerfrau Bootcamp, a German version of the program. After selling her boot camp training system in 2015, JJ decided to take a two-year break to reflect and spend time working on her ‘flagship’ training. During this time, she has been researching, traveling, and subsequently relocating to yet another city to prepare for the launch of her new project, Transform2Alpha. Like a cross between a personal development program and military special ops training, Transform2Alpha sends you on a mission to uncover and morph into the idealized version of yourself. The concept stems from JJ's vision of a self-actualized version of you that exists as a guide whom you can communicate with as you apply scientifically based methods to transform your body, mind and life. Transform2Alpha is the culmination of 30+ years of experience and insights and delivered in the most efficient way possible. Transform2Alpha also offers a “COMBAT AGING” version of the program specifically designed for those in midlife that seek strategies to protect against the accelerated aging effects of hormonal changes (namely, menopause or andropause for males). JJ currently lives with her partner and their 17-year-old African Gray parrot in Vienna, Austria where she trains clients worldwide via live events and online coaching. Like many maturepreneurs, JJ realizes that we don’t have forever to become our full potential selves. Her full potential self, “Alpha self“, is the one giving others the best and most efficient tools to command their lives!
