Acceptance is one of the main invitations of mindfulness and is a key tool in mindset work. When we resist reality, we add struggle and suffering to our existence. We make hard things harder. Acceptance and acknowledgment mean that you stop resisting “what is.”  Letting go of resistance to what is is not condoning or resigning or giving up, it is an act of caring.  For yourself and others.  From acceptance our ability to be curious, creative and find solutions is enhanced.  Peace Begins with Me is a practice of acceptance. It's a way of physically accepting and letting go and empowering yourself.  Empowerment can also be found through "Accept and…" To radically accept means to wholly recognize and be with the reality you're in - especially and even if it includes pain or discomfort.  Tara Brach in her book Radical Acceptance defines acceptance as “the willingness to experience ourselves and our life as it is.”   Adding the words “ in this moment” is a tool to help you move towards embracing and embodying the radical aspect of acceptance.  Where are you resisting reality in your life right now? Where might acceptance or acknowledgment help you?  If you want to learn how to stop resisting and let go with more ease and grace, reach out for mindful coaching.   Join a small group starting in January and enjoy community and friendship. www.jessiemahoneymd.com/ongoing-presence www.jessiemahoneymd.com/transition-well Treat yourself to 1:1 coaching and enjoy sessions just for you on your own schedule.  www.jessiemahoneymd.com/coaching Sign up to join us for the Mindful Healers Connect in Nature Retreat September 6-8th, 2024. www.jessiemahoneymd.com/retreat-connect-in-nature If you would like to develop a mindfulness practice, join us in the Mindful Healthcare Collective and/or reach out to either of us for individual work. www.jessiemahoneymd.com/work-with-me https://awakenbreath.org *Nothing in this episode should be considered medical advice.

Sleep is important and it can be a source of tremendous stress. Mindfulness and self-compassion can help decrease sleep-related stress. Most humans at one point or another have had an issue with sleep--whether it be not enough, quality sleep, or too much sleep. If you struggle with sleep you are not alone. Coaching, integrative approaches, sleep mindset work can help you improve your sleep.   Do you judge yourself for your ability to sleep? To fall asleep? To stay asleep? Do you have compassion for yourself when you don't sleep? If you take something to sleep, do you judge that?   Residency was the source of much sleep related stress and PTSD around sleep for many physicians.  Call and shift work adds to this stress. If you experience trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting good quality sleep in general, please check in with your physician.     Tips for better sleep: *not medical advice If you are caffeine sensitive, avoid caffeine after noon.   Develop a personal pre-sleep ritual. Rituals are comforting and soothing for mind, body and spirit. They allow your environment to simulate the natural onset of melatonin secretion. Dim the lights Avoid electronic screens for a few hours prior to bedtime. Turn your computer to Night Shift mode (if you have an Apple product). Take a shower or bath Read an enjoyable neutral book. Prioritize your bedroom for rest and intimacy. Keep your room as dark as possible and not too hot.   Other mind body approaches that can help with sleep: CBT Mindfulness  4-7-8 breath  Tai Chi Qigong Yoga (especially restorative yoga) Morning exercise Gratitude Mindful Coaching also helps sleep tremendously. Notice if you have judgmental stories about sleep and consider more neutral stories Perhaps your new story could be: Sleep is a growth area I am figuring it out It's a temporary hormone related issue There are many things to try Even if I don't sleep well, I can still have a good day   Join the Mindful Healthcare Collective to learn more about mindfulness techniques and connect with fellow colleagues with similar interests. www.mindfuhealthcarecollective.org If you would like to develop a restorative yoga practice join me for a Yoga, Coaching and Culinary Medicine Retreat. www.jessiemahoneymd.com/retreat-nourish-and-transform If you would like to improve your mindset about sleep and change your relationship with sleep, reahc out for coaching.  It can help a lot. https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/coaching *Nothing in this episode should be considered medical advice.

People pleasing and fear of rejection are normal human emotions.  Mindfulness and self-compassion are helpful for coming back home to yourself.  What is people pleasing? Doing whatever it takes to make other people happy and putting others needs ahead of your own- even to your own detriment. People pleasers are often seen as agreeable, helpful, kind, and high attuned to others but underneath they have trouble advocating for themselves and often have harmful patterns of self-sacrifice and/or self-neglect. Some signs that you might be a people-pleaser: You have a difficult time saying "no." You are preoccupied with what other people might think. You feel guilty when you tell people "no." You fear that turning people down will make them think you are mean or selfish. You agree to things you don't like and/or do things you don't want to do. You struggle with feelings of low-self esteem. You want people to like you You hope that doing things for others will help earn their approval. You look for external validation and don't validate yourself. You always tell people you're sorry. You take the blame even when something isn't your fault. You have very little free time because you are always doing things for other people. You neglect your own needs in order to do things for others. You pretend to agree with people even though you feel differently. People pleasing often leads to anxiety, frustration, stress, exhaustion, overwhelm, burnout, feeling stretched too thin and running out of willpower. Giving up people pleasing doesn't mean not being nice. Doing things to please others can and often is a beautiful thing. It's when you are doing something because you are afraid that you'll be disliked or rejected is when it becomes people-pleasing. Find Your Right Cup Of Tea "There will always be someone in this life who just doesn't like you, no matter how hard you try to please them.  There will always be something that you say or do, which causes offense or division. Whether you meant to or not.  There will always be someone who finds fault in you, your life, or your words. You may never find out why, please don't waste your precious time trying to. You can't be everyone's cup of tea. Then there will be those who like you on impact. A little fizz of energy passes between you. Silently, unseen, bonding. Those people will not only like you but they will like you fiercely. They are your people. Whatever spare time you have, spend it on them. You can't be everyone's cup of tea, but you can be someone's first sip of a cold drink on a sunny day… Or a warming hot chocolate when you come in from the rain or the pop of a long-awaited champagne cork or a stiff shot of tequila when things go awry Find your people, love them hard." - Donna Ashworth Listen to the podcast to learn tools to help you step out of people pleasing and fear and step into alignment and authenticity. Beyond realizing that you can't please everyone else, tea (and peaches ) are an invitation to please yourself. Pleasing yourself is not selfish it's self preservation. You are the only one who knows exactly what pleasing yourself looks like. Your job to please yourself and other people's jobs to please themselves. What are afraid of if you stop being the perfect peach or cup of tea?  What are afraid of if you please yourself first?   What would please you? What's stopping you from pleasing yourself more?   This podcast is an invitation to what will be a monthly Tea and Be session in Mindful Healthcare Collective. Finding and maintaining deep connections and friendships is challenging for many high achieving professional women.   If you have difficulties making friends, you are not alone. No matter your age it's possible to make new and meaningful connections with others.  In fact, age sometimes helps make the process easier.   What you prioritize happens. There is no better time to make friends than now   Friend struggles involve BOTH circumstances and thoughts.   Many women have busy jobs, erratic and hectic schedules, and children all making time for friends limited. They are exhausted and have witnessed and experienced trauma   The stories that we tell ourselves about making friends and our love makes it harder.   In this episode we discuss a few thought errors that make friendships harder to find and navigate as women.   A few of these include not belonging, time scarcity, an attachment to productivity, fear of rejection, people pleasing, fear of failure, worry about what others think, high expectations to name a few. We also fear vulnerability, are generally not super comfortable with ourselves, and we are experts at comparing and despairing. Listen to hear about some tools that can help make finding and having friends more easeful. These include mindfulness, yoga, and coaching. Thank you for listening to the Mindful Healers Podcast! We are at episode 100! The world will not fall apart if you follow your heart. This podcasts came about because we followed our hearts. And it required that we quit/declutter some of our other roles. The word “quit” can be triggering due to it's commonly held association with failure and weakness. Guilt sometimes is also associated with quitting. We offer the concept of transitioning, graduating, and pivoting instead. There is a high cost to continuing in roles that are no longer in alignment for you. Quitting can be seen as winning. It almost always requires immense courage. It is often an act of love. Quitting creates space, time, and energy for what you truly want to do or be.  Jessie can help evaluate your priorities and help you quit strategically and intentionally through virtual coaching or during a retreat. Hard is not more valuable. Struggle is not more worthwhile. Busy is not better. Recorded on Labor Day, we discuss how the culture of hard, busy, and struggle impede us from living our best, most authentic lives.  When you stop valuing being busy and you choose to drop your resistance to the world, you discover flow.   High-achieving women often feel that the fight is needed, that it's our job to save the world, and that we are supposed to constantly be busy and fix, change, and manage things.  It's possible to let it be easy, drop our resistance, and stop fighting.    When we do, we discover capacity, connection, and fun. When we let go of the struggle and our attachment to hard,  We enjoy presence, patience, and appreciation. Where might you be “laboring” unnecessarily? How might life be different if you let go of the habitual attachment to hard and struggle and told a different story? Delight is NOT decadent. It is sustenance. When we honor diastole, we honor ourselves. Honoring diastole is healing for our own hearts. A necessary, but often neglected, action for healers. Today's episode includes a special guest, Dr. Gail Wright, a pediatric cardiologist, a disciple of Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen, mindfulness teacher, and founder of Redwood Resilience. She also happens to be Jessie's friend, soul sister in many endeavors, and her co-lead for the Honoring Diastole Retreats at Pie Ranch. In this episode, we reflect on the importance of diastole in our lives, finding delight in the practice of medicine, and the why of the experience we provide at Pie Ranch.  Diastole is the phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle relaxes and allows the chambers to fill with blood. The idea of a heart needing to relax in order to continue to function properly extends to each of us as individuals.  Our hearts know that diastole should be 2/3 of the cardiac cycle for a long and healthy life. Most of us don't live a life that honors rest, refilling, and relaxing in this way.   A key eye-opening point made from the cardiologist's perspective is that diastole in the heart is actually only a matter of milliseconds.  Even small practices, seconds or 1 day, can make a huge difference in how we show up at work and at home. Listen to our conversation to learn why mindful movement helps you find the place between effort and ease and reconnect to the natural rhythms within yourself.   We share how reflective writing allows you to get back into the flow, be seen and known, and see and know.  We also discuss how mindful coaching helps you “wonder rather than worry."   Nature is a shared love of Gail's and mine and a huge component of why and how we collaborate.  Nature is an essential ingredient in all of my retreat offerings because it, along with mindfulness, coaching, and yoga, helps you live into a bigger version of yourself.  Gail reminds us that nature is a reminder of the rhythms of life,  that helps us “learn to stand tall, with dignity and grace, and drink from the clouds.”   Retreats are a way to honor diastole. They are an intentional gift for a healthy heart, mind, and spirit. When we retreat, we take a respite and create space for reflection. We would love to have you join us at Pie Ranch in the fall or spring, www.jessiemahoneymd.com/honoring-diastole or Jessie at Sagrada in either September 2022 or the spring of 2023  www.jessiemahoneymd.com/retreat-nourish-and-transf... Mindfulness is an antidote to loneliness whether practiced alone or in community.   When mindfulness is practiced in community, the benefits are even greater. Awaken together. Heal together. Play and be together.    Community, even without mindfulness, is healing and energizing. Teens need mindfulness more than ever right now. Today's episode includes a special guest Dr. Dzung Vo, who is a pediatrician specializing in adolescent medicine, He is Founding Director of the BC Children's Hospital Centre for Mindfulness, and a clinical associate professor and division head for the Division of Adolescent Health and Medicine, Department of Pediatrics. Listen to this episode to learn about why we think it's happening and what you can do to help the teens in your life. Mindfulness is not a panacea, but it can help teens, and all of us, move through difficulty in a healthier way.  WIth teens in particular, it's important to model rather than tell them what to do.  Sharing stories is also helpful in encouraging teens to try mindfulness. Ultimately each of us comes to mindfulness in our own time.  Enjoy a “SOBER” breathing space in the mindful moment offering.  Please help us spread the ripple effects of mindfulness for healers far and wide by following our podcast, and leaving us stars and reviews. Mindfulness helps to ease life transitions, especially menopause. Allowing and accepting, honoring, and feeling through your experience of menopause is a healthy way to traverse this inevitable stage of life.  Today we share another mindful guest conversation - with Dr. Keira Bar, a dual board-certified dermatologist and menopause specialist. Maybe menopause doesn't have to be challenging, bad, or a struggle? What if you told a different story about it?  What if it was a positive experience?  A life transition? Menopause is so often seen as a negative journey- something to get through, what if you mindfully shifted your perspective and decided it was positive? What if you accepted and approved of yourself exactly as you are, where you are on the journey. What if you loved your grey hair, your wrinkles, and even your menopausal middle? In yoga, there is a focus on the importance of transitions.  Not as something to get through but something that brings value in and of itself.  Navigating the transition well sets you up for success on the other side. If you want to connect with Dr. Barr you can find her at www.drkeirabarr.com If you are a healthcare professional and have not joined us yet at the Mindful Healthcare Collective, please do so at mindfulhealthcarecollective.com. Mistakes always happen when we rush things.  I've seen this not only in medicine, but life in general. We can also end up living a life of regrets and unhappiness if the switch is set on autopilot, where we are just going through the motions. Sometimes you need to reach out , take control, and press PAUSE!  As discussed in Episode 130, I had to do this recently when our family was (is) going through some really tough medical issues. The secret to inner peace is learning to pause and be present, so says Dr. Jessie Mahoney.  A board-certified pediatrician, life coach, and certified yoga and mindfulness instructor, Dr. Mahoney draws from her 17 plus years of experience dealing with physician wellness in a large HMO, coaching physicians to find more calm, ease, and contentment, so they can create and enjoy a more intentional and healthy life within and outside of medicine.   If you are struggling with these issues right now or know someone who is, I invite you to listen to this captivating interview. Because we want the best for our children and we have smart brains that are trained specifically to think in certain ways- we often encounter a fair amount of conflict around this topic.    “What screws us up most in life is the picture in our head of how it is supposed to be.” Mindfulness and coaching tools can help you traverse the journey of co-parenting more easily and show up with peace, calm, groundedness, and intention.  Mindfulness makes this much easier.  Noticing, awareness, curiosity, non judgement, accepting, non-striving and intention are all key.  Noticing what's working rather than what's not, showing up in a way your future self would be proud and being a teammate are key approaches.   Your co parent may be better at certain things than you are. Watch and learn from them.   Their way may be different than yours and it may turn out way better than you expect.  If it doesn't, it usually doesn't matter. If it's not dangerous, let them learn and your children learn from it.   Parenting is a journey. A long one. And there are seasons in it.  Enjoy the one you are in and appreciate that your co-parent may be in their element in this one or that they may excel in a different season ahead.  They may make a great toddler parent, teen parent, young adult parent, grandparent, driving teacher, sports coach. We are not all great at every part of parenting. As teammates we can do much better than we can do alone. Learn to show up as the parent, co-parent and partner you want to be through 1:1 mindful coaching with Jessie or by joining Mindful Love, her small group coaching program designed to help you transform challenging relationships into amazing ones.  Find out more: https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/ If you want to develop a mindfulness practice more fully, find out more about working with Dr. Liang at https://awakenbreath.org/ Find out more about the Mindful Healers Podcast and the Mindful Healthcare Collective: https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/mindful-healers-podcast *Nothing in this episode should be considered medical advice

The more you give the more you receive.  In honor of National Physician's Week and the one-year anniversary of the Mindful Healthcare Collective, this episode is both a celebration and a chance to learn.  One year ago, the Mindful Healthcare Collective was formed urgently at the outset of the pandemic to support those working in healthcare through this tragically difficult time.  Over the past year, it has blossomed into so much more. The Mindful Healthcare Collective is now a vibrant community of over 2100 healthcare professionals from across the country and the world who are coming together to heal themselves, learn, grow and support one another through the challenges of working in healthcare at this moment. The Mindful Healers Podcast is an offshoot of the Mindful Healthcare Collective as is the Mindful Healing Collective.  The Mindful Healing Collective is a group for those who do not work in healthcare but who would also like to discover the beauty and freedom from suffering that comes from choosing to live a more mindful and intentional life.  Wisdom and tips for mindful living shared in this episode: Be open to new things Start where you are Pause, be present and notice. Be curious and follow clues. Don't forget about your body sensations. Start with something simple and be consistent. Practice and keep showing up. Prioritize rest, quiet, and dark. Work to grow self-acceptance and self-compassion.  Weave in mindfulness where you can. Why join us in the Mindful Healthcare Collective? It's a haven and a refuge. A place to send love and support to our colleagues in medicine. A place to belong, find a diverse and inclusive community, and connection. It's a place to connect with your purpose and discover shared experiences. And a welcoming space where you can show up as you are and be seen and heard. Everyone has them.  Being mindful- noticing, with curiosity and without judgement, helps you move through a down day with skill.  Down days can be opportunities to open our hearts and have compassion for ourselves.  In this episode we share how allowing, accepting, naming all the feelings, and showing yourself compassion on the “No Good Very Bad Day” can be helpful. We take a hippocratic oath to do no harm as physicians. However, we often forget that this oath also includes doing no harm to ourselves.  In this episode, we discuss how self-compassion is key to both reaching our full potential as healers and preventing burnout. We focus so often on not being perfect and many healers beat themselves up for small mistakes.  It turns out that this strategy and in particular- shame-  gets in the way of learning and growing from our mistakes. Changing our perspective to one where we embrace our imperfections allows us to accept ourselves and grow and develop into the best version of ourselves.  Mindfulness and self-compassion increase our curiosity and help us build better relationships with ourselves, those we love, those we work with, and those we care for.  Don't miss the opportunity to enjoy a mindful moment at the end of the episode.
