This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comMarried journalists Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer are the forces behind “The Harvey Weinstein Trial: Unfiltered” podcast, in which actors read daily excerpts of the courthouse testimony verbatim. Released during the trial in 2020, it's an extraordinary document of a cultural flashpoint, providing a far deeper and more troubling portrait than most media coverage did at the time. Nobody was shocked when Weinstein was slapped with a 23-year sentence, but it seems many people were when that conviction was overturned on Thursday, April 25.Not Ann and Phelim. “This is of course not any surprise at all us, and to any of you who've been listening,” McElhinney said during the “special news breaking episode” recorded yesterday, “We Were Right - Weinstein Case Collapses.” Catherine A. Christian, a former prosecutor in the Manhattan DA's office, was also unsurprised. “A number of us were expecting that it probably would be reversed if there was some sort of intellectual honesty,” she told Politico Magazine.”You don't want to make bad law for bad defendants.”Few people followed this case as closely — or produced the kind of hard-hitting journalism as Ann and Phelim. Listeners may recall Sarah's beloved holiday tradition for three years running: She listens to all 23 episodes of the podcast, which is very weird, although Ann called it “the most precious compliment I've ever had.” McElhinney and McAleer join Nancy and an awestruck Sarah to discuss “the silence of the laptops” in the courtroom, why actress Annabella Sciorra should never have been on the witness stand, the transactional nature of Hollywood relationships, and whether Weinstein will be tried again in New York. Strap in!Support Ann & Phelim at The Unreported Story Society. Anyone in or around New York City is invited to McElhinney and McAleer's latest project, October 7: In Their Own Words. Many camps in the Midwest and the East have been moving activities indoors, seeking advice from medical professionals and hoping the air quality improves soon so campers can get back to hiking, playing tetherball and waging games of capture the flag. "It has been a little tough just for our kiddos who are here, most of them are here for one week, and they want to swim. At the beginning of the week, we had some thunderstorms roll in so they couldn't swim and then the air quality changed and so we've had to close our pool and then open our pool and then close our pool again. So it's been back and forth a little bit," said Executive Director of the YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee Spencer, Mike McElhinney. "We're treating it like a rainy-day experience," said McElhinney. "The biggest thing for us is the safety of our campers and our staff and we don't want anybody to develop any issues because the air quality is bad and they've been outdoors." Campers like Christopher Mallon had to alter their expectations of certain camp traditions as their activities were moved inside due to air quality. "I've only seen fog like this before. I've never seen this kind of smoke," said Mallon. Associate Vice President of risk management and safety for the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, Paige Meyer, said because their core groups are children, the elderly and the immune-compromised, they had to make some hard decisions to close certain camps and specific outdoor activities. "And I know that our day camps specifically are a big childcare space. So it's so parents can go to work every day or guardians can go to work every day. But on the flip side, we're being trusted with those people's prized possession and we want to make sure we do that the best way that we can," said Meyer. But the campers and staff have stayed positive throughout the changes. "I think really that that camp is still going strong, even though we can't be outdoors and our mission is still, you know, to help these kids grow and do what we can. And we're adapting as best as we can," said McElhinney. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

One of the stars of the ABC series Wakefield, Mandy McElhinney called The Bunch...
In Segment 1, Brad McElhinney of WV Metro News joins us, with a surprise appearance from his dog, to talk about the “weird” differences in covering this year’s legislative session, which was closed to the public during the pandemic. This year, the news media covered the session from above in the galleries for social distancing, a major change from years past when reporters were stationed on the ground floor closer to the legislators.McElhinney says the overriding headline of the session was the governor’s proposed removal of the state income tax, which caused a stir with the suggested sales tax increase to offset the loss of revenue. If the bill had passed, the state would have had the highest sales tax in the country. The bill was shut down in the House of Delegates with a 0-100 vote within hours of the governor saying the House wouldn’t vote on the bill.In Segment 2, Brad McElhinney of WV Metro News returns to our reporters’ roundtable to discuss more highlights of the legislative session, including Education Savings Accounts and expanding charter schools. Issues regarding education were among the earliest discussed, with the House of Delegates working to move through its priorities quickly should COVID-19 pause or close the session. Two years ago, educators across the state went to the Capitol Building to show opposition to expanding charter schools. That pushback didn’t happen this year because the sessions were closed to the public. With the legislation passed, the ESAs will help families save up for tuition and other educational expenses should they choose nontraditional schooling, such as private schools, for their children. The legislature also passed a bill tightening the existing law against teachers’ strikes, stating that should teachers strike again in the future, they would not be paid for those days. Teachers’ unions called the bill, “vindictive” and “punitive.”In Segment 3, Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis is joined by Lacie Pierson, reporter for the Charleston Gazette-Mail, and Steven Adams, Capitol Correspondent for Ogden Newspapers, to discuss their experiences this year covering the 2021 West Virginia legislative session amid protocols set in place for COVID-19 guidelines. In the roundtable, Adams describes the difficulties in covering the session with limited opportunities to speak with legislators due to protocol put in place for social distancing. Pierson says while the media was still able to access the same rooms, it was still very limited and she had to rely on her press pass more so than previous years to show she was allowed in since the general public was not.Our guests also talk about the state income tax plan, which was shot down 0-100 by the House of Delegates. The biggest question now is what happens next, especially with the governor’s plan for a road tour to gain support for the income tax plan.In Segment 4, Lacie Pierson, reporter for the Charleston Gazette-Mail, and Steven Adams, Capitol Correspondent for Ogden Newspapers, return for a discussion on the Mountain State’s 2021 legislative session.Pierson discusses the legislature’s approval of an Intermediate Court of Appeals in the Mountain State. She called the decision “a long time coming,” as the state is one of only a handful without a middle court.Adams talks about the state’s budget, which he called a “compromised budget” as it takes money from higher education institutions, particularly Marshall and West Virginia University. He says the compromise is that this does put money in other areas, and the surplus the state expects at the end of the fiscal year would backfill the funds. It also included a 1.5% cut to state agencies due to the proposed, and failed, state income tax plan. However, while the income tax plan failed, that cut remained in the budget.

Oggi sono pro life. First off, this is recorded on Tuesday, Feb. 18, so it is prior to Islanders’ game. We recap the loss in OT against the Tampa Bay Lightning. What a crazy game it was. It was a super intense, and playoff-like atmosphere. There wasn’t much missing from this game when it comes to the events that transpired. Two goalie-interference calls against the Avs get us talking about the ruling. McElhinney would get an Oscar from us on the second one. A terrible second period for the Avs was followed by one of the more crazy andexciting third periods this season, and that led to overtime. Unfortunately,MacKinnon had a bad giveaway that led to a Kucherov breakaway and goal to win the game for the Lightning’s 11th-straight win. The Avs must stop the bleeding. #GoAvsGo @offsidebyamile @hockeypodnet "PLAYLINE" THPN LOTTO! Glenn talks of his childhood days living at Rosehill when there was only one trotting trainer in a bustling thoroughbred precinct. That trainer took young Glenn under his wing and had him in the sulky from a very early age. Glenn recalls the closure of the Granville Showground to make way for the Parramatta Speedway. He and his brothers had to move their horses to Bankstown which turned out to be a life changing move for the budding harness driver. He reflects on five incredible years in the early part of the millenium when he drove a huge number of winners. Glenn pays tribute to the trainers who’ve helped him along the way, and to the best horses he’s driven. He talks of his hopes for the future.

In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports we connect with 11-year NHL veteran goaltender Curtis McElhinney, who signed a two-year free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1. McElhinney shares so many memories and great lessons from a career that was launched with a love for the equipment, started in the NHL with an eye towards taking over for Miikka Kiprusoff in Calgary, almost ended with a pelvis fractured by what should have been routine crease movement with the Arizona Coyotes, and was reborn during four seasons with Sergei Bobrovsky, Ian Clark and the Columbus Blue Jackets. He talks candidly about his exit from the Toronto Maple Leafs last season — “The Toronto thing sucked,” he says, “It sucked." — a remarkable run to the Eastern Conference Final with the Carolina Hurricanes, why taking a surprise offer from Tampa Bay was an easy decision, and how his equipment, game and mindset have all evolved along the way. We also meet back up with our freshly married gear expert, Cam Matwiv, who foregoes his honeymoon to not only walk us through the complete Bauer mask lineup, but also go over the crucial elements of finding a mask that fits properly and will keep you safe. It's all in this week’s episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports in Surrey and thehockeyshop.com

Today we’re joined by our guest, Dr. Glenn McElhinney. He is president and CEO of Transformed 4 Life, a company helping people to experience wholeness through change in mind, heart, and behavior. He brings over 35 years of experience in counseling and consulting individuals, couples, families and organizations. Dr. McElhinney was an associate professor of psychology for over ten years, holds a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Counseling from Westminster Theological Seminary and a Master of Divinity from Grace Theological Seminary. His work with Transformed 4 Life is based on the belief that people don’t have to be stuck where they are. There’s always the opportunity to transform your situation, becoming better and different at what you’re doing. This comes by learning what true wholeness is and using that as the lens to view all aspects of your life.Me, An Entrepreneur?Dr. McElhinney came to entrepreneurship “through the back door.” It began when he was doing his graduate work. His internship required that he complete 900 counseling hours, but the clinic available to the students only had two hours per week available for the program’s interns. As a result, he contacted organizations to find out if they needed someone one hour a week to provide counseling services.Thirty years into his career, after budget cutbacks at his employer, he once again he started making contacts, seeking people and organizations who might need his services. He also worked with a coach, who advised his assessment showed he was an entrepreneur. He hadn’t thought of himself as an entrepreneur but soon realized that his behavior of immediately seeking solutions rather than waiting for the opportunities to come to him was, well, entrepreneurial.Wholeness. What is it and why does it matter for an entrepreneur and their career? Our culture thinks of wholeness as this ideal of perfection. Dr. McElhinney views wholeness as a sense of contentment with who you are and who you’re designed to be, and not trying to pursue being someone else. The moment you start comparing, it becomes an enormous distraction from relying on and going deep with who you are as a person. Wholeness does not mean there will never be sadness, betrayal, or injustice, but it does mean we have the opportunity to transform the more we dig deeply into who we actually are.Focusing our full energy on developing who we are frees us from the distraction of trying to be something we’re not. When a person knows what their core theme, their core value, is, then the environment is irrelevant. Wholeness gives us a clarity into our competency. The reason a lot of people get stuck or feel like they’re spinning their wheels in work and life is because they spend a lot of time working on who they’re not and trying to improve that, which is never going to accomplish anything. If you think you need to be, or that you are, a complete package in your work, you’re hurting yourself because you’re not open to the notion that there are other people who could help you excel to accomplish your goals.Embrace the Lies You Believe about YourselfWhat?Dr. McElhinney’s work has shown that internally, people know who they are, but they end up believing the lies about them. One of the exercises he does is to have people list the lies they believe about themselves. The reason a person believes these lies is because there’s often some element of truth in it. They then need to identify the kernel of truth and not let it define them in life. For Solo PR Pros, this can mean that we use these areas of weakness and design our businesses around it, by not offering a certain service or by building our team to fit those needs. From Assessment to WholenessDr. McElhinney uses the Pro-D Assessment. It takes into consideration:Your Mission (passion),Your Competencies (aptitudes, abilities, strengths)Your Styles (behaviors and characteristics that make you unique) The Pro-D Assessment converges the three to give you a uniquely complete profile, including: Career value areasWhat work culture you’re best inEducational areas to help you continue to growCaution areasWho you are when you’re a team leader and when you’re a team member.Core Theme of your passionWhen you can look at this profile every day it and know it’ll never change, there’s great freedom to move forward, embracing what you’re not good at and to let that go. The assessment prevents the second-guessing. Doubt is the greatest destruction of any entrepreneur. This removes the wasted time and energy of asking “What if?”As Dr. McElhinney says, “Solopreneurs are transforming the culture with what they’re doing. It’s exciting to come alongside people who are really interested in success.”Visit www.transformed4life.solutions to learn more.Solo PR Pro premium members, log in to the member site for additional free resources.Would you like to learn more about Solo PR Pro and the benefits of membership? Mark interviews Sinead McElhinney, PR Coordinator on the Communications team from Rakuten Kobo in Toronto, Ontario about some interesting reading data that Kobo released near the end of 2017. They discuss the analysis of reading data, understanding core eBook readers better, as well as some of Sinead's favorite things about her role in the book industry. During the chat, they discuss: Where she started and how she got her start at Kobo Her role in marketing and the on-brand customer/reader experience The double-edged sword of social media The difference between using social media for personal use and for a corporation that needs to keep its target demographics in mind Details about the top “actually read” books from the previous year and the data dissection performed on this reading data Just because something is a bestseller doesn't mean that it is a book that has been read through to completion. IE, looking at books that were actually finished can be meaningful data The binge-reading that Sinead does the same way some others might engage in binge-watching a show via Netflix Some common themes in the most popularly read books The dynamic engagement with both writers and readers that Sinead participated in when visiting the Romantic Time (RT) Booklovers conference in Atlanta in May 2017 The diversity within the many different types of romance readers that Sinead discovered at RT Booklovers The launch of audiobooks at Kobo in late summer of 2017 and some of the things they learned about the types of books people prefer reading in eBook format versus listening to The integration of OverDrive library borrowing in the Kobo Aura ONE After the interview, Mark reflects on the evolution of storytelling and how, in oral storytelling, the creator could receive immediate and instant audience feedback that might help them to adjust their story's tone, pacing and other elements on the fly. He touches upon how story, as a written medium in print format, completely divorces that connection when the act of reading becomes a solitary pursuit, but that digital reading brings back an intriguing degree of those elements that writers and publishers could likely benefit if analyzed effectively. He shares his own experience telling ghost stories to live audiences and how, as a storyteller, he can easily adapt the tales based on audience reaction. He discusses the interesting metrics that a platform such as Wattpad.com offers to writers about the demographics of their readers and other reading stats. He also talks about the "real time" blog story I, DEATH that his novel was based upon allowed him the luxury of adapting the story as it was being rolled out based on reader reaction. And, finally, he suggests that platforms like Kindle and Kobo wield a fascinating opportunity related to the type of in depth reading data that Sinead was talking about that can significantly benefit writers and publishers.
