Syracuse Speaks

A bit of a disclaimer: Monday, July 5th was when this episode was recorded. It was also the date of the fourth game of the Stanley Cup Finals, a series that the Tampa Bay Lightning was leading 3-0 at the time of recording. Obviously Alex would have preferred to wait until after the game before publishing this episode, but unfortunately that wasn't possible. Please just know that the result of that game was unknown at the time. In this episode, Alex takes a look at how the American Hockey League and the Syracuse Crunch have shaped the Lightning. There's a reason 24 players currently on the Lightning's roster have at least some AHL experience in their pasts. The league offers players a bridge between juniors/college and professional hockey, unique challenges that create growth as both a player and a professional, and, when needed, the opportunity to get a career back on track. All 24 players Alex looks at experienced the AHL through at least one of those situations. She starts off by discussing the few players who had AHL time under their belts before this season but were not with Syracuse, including Blake Coleman and Curtis McElhinney. She also discusses the curious case of forward Patrick Maroon. She then discusses players who played for Syracuse for a small amount of time since the start of the affiliation in 2012, including superstars Andrei Vasilevskiy and Nikita Kucherov. Next, she spends some time looking at the players currently on the Lightning's roster who had an impact on Syracuse's own bids for championships, like Tyler Johnson, Mitchell Stephens, Ben Thomas, Yanni Gourde, and Daniel Walcott. She finishes off with the newer crop of players who are making an impact (or appear poised to in the near future): Erik Cernak, Ross Colton, Cal Foote, Alex Barre-Boulet, and more.

In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports we connect with 11-year NHL veteran goaltender Curtis McElhinney, who signed a two-year free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1. McElhinney shares so many memories and great lessons from a career that was launched with a love for the equipment, started in the NHL with an eye towards taking over for Miikka Kiprusoff in Calgary, almost ended with a pelvis fractured by what should have been routine crease movement with the Arizona Coyotes, and was reborn during four seasons with Sergei Bobrovsky, Ian Clark and the Columbus Blue Jackets. He talks candidly about his exit from the Toronto Maple Leafs last season — “The Toronto thing sucked,” he says, “It sucked." — a remarkable run to the Eastern Conference Final with the Carolina Hurricanes, why taking a surprise offer from Tampa Bay was an easy decision, and how his equipment, game and mindset have all evolved along the way. We also meet back up with our freshly married gear expert, Cam Matwiv, who foregoes his honeymoon to not only walk us through the complete Bauer mask lineup, but also go over the crucial elements of finding a mask that fits properly and will keep you safe. It's all in this week’s episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports in Surrey and thehockeyshop.com

Hello, hello, hello! It's another spring series edition of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast! In this show's first half, Elan and Brian are inspired by the happenings of the Stanley Cup Playoffs' second round to discuss the rich irony of the Hurricanes goaltending, the pumpkin-ing of the Islanders goaltending, and the futures of a couple forwards on each team who had standout seasons for reasons both good and bad. They also try to nip any speculation on the St. Louis Blues' PP1 quarterback in the bud, give appropriate praise to one established and one up-and-coming Star, speculate on the potential of a repeat situation in the Bruins' crease next year, and wonder whether a Predators stud is actually that. In the second half, we kick off our Almanac review and self-evaluation, where we look back at our projections to celebrate the hits and understand and learn from the misses. To begin, we go easy on ourselves, looking at the player point projections on which we were furthest apart from other projectors, but ended up being right about. Don't worry... we'll hold ourselves fully accountable for the ones we got wrong in the offseason episodes to come. This episode was prepared with great help from @fantasyref, who sent us all their data on how we did on our projections, as well as how our projections stacked up to all the others. Check out their site and this year's rankings! And finally.. we announced on this episode that the Keeping Karlsson Audio Almanac will be returning for the 2019-20 season! You can pre-order yours at keepingkarlsson.com/almanac. (If you didn't listen to the 2018-19 Almanac and want to check it out, it's now available on a pay-what-you-want basis.) It's another make or break week, and so we make another episode that breaks all the latest fantasy hockey news on the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast! In Outjuries, Elan and Brian delve into the fantasy impact of a return of a top line forward in Buffalo and the suspension of a key blueline cog, as well as temper immediate expectations from a high end Sen, consider upside versus steadiness on the Jets back end, speculate on how two healthy goalies will be rotated in both New Yorks, and lavish 2/3 of Tampa's top line with praise. Recent call-ups also get coverage here, as the guys fiure out what can be expected from two of the newest NHLers in Vancouver and Arizona. In Injuries, the Crosby line is hurting badly and looking for replacements, the Leafs may regret letting go of a crease replacement, the Bruins may have to turn to a career backup to carry them down the stretch, we neither endorse nor disapprove of potential moves for a Panthers forward, we get sad about the Stars, and dear god the St Louis depth chart is thin. In Hot Streaks, we look for value in the 5-game weeks coming for Nashville and Carolina, give a lukewarm kudos to a young New Jersey centreman, and set the record straight on our feelings about Leon Draisaitl. In Cold Streaks, there are a lot of guys that you'd never consider dropping earlier this year, but with just a week or two left, is there even a point to hanging onto them? This segment pays visits to slumpers in Columbus, Montreal, Buffalo, Colorado, Anaheim, Minnesota and Philadelphia. And all those goalies who blew it this week? We try to figure out if they'll do it to you all over again if given the chance. The episode once again ends with tributes to the fantasy teams we've lost along the way. The Blue Jackets' streak is over, but the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast's streak of appearing in your podcast feed on a weekly basis continues!  The show begins on an optimistic note with Outjuries, where we consider what can be expected by one old and one new Ranger returned to health, the upside of Montreal's #1 centre and his affect on some complementary pieces, a hopefully healed point-per-game Star, and if the return of Ryan Getzlaf can save Elan's bacon in the Rakell over/under bet. Underwhelming crease battles are renewed in Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh, and a pair of blueliners come back to man their teams' top powerplay units. In injuries, the guys wonder if there's top pairing scoring potential from either of the Predators' second pairing mainstays, and also if it's time to just save yourself the headache and rid yourself of Kris Letang.  Hot streaks this week feature the latest of Connor McDavid's benefactors, John Tavares and his benefactors, Anze Kopitar and his benefactor, Torey Krug, and so many Hurricanes because they figured out how to score. Cold streaks include an Oiler on the outside who should be able to do better for himself, another who maybe shouldn't, and a Devil who doesn't happen to be getting in on any of the 1.5 goals the Devils score each game. The show is interspersed with a mess of conversations about goalie messes. Huge messes. Gross messes. Sad messes. So many goalies making messes. Players mentioned on this episode include Shane Gostisbehere, Alex Galchenyuk, Philip "Phil" Danault, Pavel Buchnevich, Rick Nash, Carey Price, Nick Holden, Michael Grabner, Paul Byron, Jamie Benn, Radek Faksa, Patrick Sharp, John Klingberg, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Rickard Rakell, Ben Bishop, Andrei Vasilevskiy, not Victor Hedman, Marc-Andre Fleury, Matt Murray, Mark Streit, Ivan Provorov, Roman Josi, Mattias Ekholm, Ryan Ellis, Mike Green, Antti Niemi, Kari Lehtonen, Michal Neuvirth, Steve Mason, James Neal, Viktor Arvidsson, Mike Fisher, Filip Forsberg, Auston Watson, Curtis McElhinney, Justin Schultz, Kris Letang, Joonas Korpisalo, Anton Forsberg, Sergei Bobrovsky, Sam Gagner, Alex Wennberg, Brandon Saad, Zach Werenski, Patrick Maroon, Milan Lucic, Jordan Eberle, Jon Tavares, Nick Leddy, Anze Kopitar, Marian Gaborik, Jordan Stall, Brock McGinn, Victor Rask, Torey Krug, Patrice Bergeron, Mike Cammalleri, Braden Holtby, Jake Allen, Carter Hutton, Connor Hellebuyck, Michael Hutchinson and more. * * *   Download this episode, subscribe, and review us on iTunes!   If you enjoy the show, please support future episodes by becoming a patron of Keeping Karlsson.    Keeping Karlsson patrons can join our patron-only Facebook group and take part in (and receive audio from) a monthly live, face-to-face and interactive Keeping Karlsson recording!   You can also support us by telling a friend, subscribing to and reviewing Keeping Karlsson on iTunes, and following us on Twitter (@keepingkarlsson). This week's episode of Keeping Karlsson begins with headlines, followed by headlines, and then we enter into a headlines segment before finishing it off with players of note and our patented lightning round. We mention a goalie on whom the bravest poolies will think about selling high, a much-maligned star who will absolutely break out of an uncharacteristic slump, a buzzy top prospect that's quickly hit a wall, a young line whose members are all producing at an impressive rate, budding(?) goalie controversies, and a couple good candidates to fill a low-stakes rotating roster spot on your fantasy team. Brian also cops to a possible team-management mistake, though that's shortly after a very firm and righteous told-you-so regarding one of our most-queried about players on twitter this week.Players talked about on this week's show include Alex Ovechkin, Derek Stepan, Ryan McDonagh, Ryan Callahan, Jonathan Drouin, Nikita Kucherov, Dany Heatley, James Wisniewski, Nick Foligno, Curtis McElhinney, James Neal, Mike Ribeiro, Mikhail Grabovski, Ray Emery, Steve Mason, Chad Johnson, Jaroslav Halak, Ryan Miller, Nazem Kadri, Daniel Winnik, Johnny Gaudreau, and Michael Raffl. If you enjoy the show, please check out our brand new Patreon group to learn how you can support us in a new way. You can also support us by telling a friend, subscribing to and reviewing Keeping Karlsson on iTunes, and following us on Twitter (@keepingkarlsson).
