Bodies drifting aloft through the endless night. Alone. Aimless. Remnants from the assembly of existence. Celestial slag cast into the void. A building block of creation in search of a new creator. To the United Colonies, these unbound boulders are nothing more than a nuisance. God's refuse en route to a cosmic waste bin. The KERKHOVEN, a United Colonies mapping vessel, is manned by a four-person crew. Their pervue is the documentation of meteors, comets, and other orphaned celestial debris that threatens the shipping routes between the Alpha Centauri and the independent systems. Most days are dull and produce no object in which to judge at all. But one day in particular will bring, not the judging of space rocks, but the value of human life...Transmission 1.4....commence.CAST:Carson Holbrook, Captain, Kerkhoven | ALEX JAMES KANEGinger Eix, First Mate, Kerkhoven | DoraTrix DORATRIXKellen “Salsa” Verde, Science Officer, Kerkhoven | BEC HUEGGSEston Bloom, Maintenance, Kerkhoven | DR. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease which can lead to loss of mobility and vision. Almost 3 million people worldwide are affected by it. There is no cure, but attempts are being made to accelerate the healing process with treatments to restore what the disease has damaged. At the same time, scientists have recently discovered a link between MS and a common virus that the majority of us carry in our bodies. It had been known for years that there was a link between Multiple Sclerosis and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). But then, a study finally proved the link. Now, trials are underway on potential vaccines against EBV and scientists are hopeful that this could be a gateway to preventing MS. Don't miss it!TREK DRAFT RULESThis will be a snake draft. You will draft a crew of 7 officers to helm your StarshipYour crew must fill the following roles: Captain, Executive Officer/Security Officer, Science Officer, Ship's Doctor, Chief Engineer, a ‘soft skills' officer (Guinan, Neelix, Uhura), and a Wildcard (Wesley, Nog, someone else from another role). These roles may be drafted in any order, but failure to draft each of these positions will result in an invalid draft slate and immediate ejection from the draft.Babylon Who? Battlestar Galacti-what? Only characters from Star Trek series and films are eligible for this draft. Firefly is in the jar! Han Solo? A no-no!The JJ Decree: Eligible series and movies for this draft must take place in what is commonly understood as the main Star Trek universe. The JJ Abrams versions of characters are not eligible. For each slot, the character must reasonably be able to serve in that role. For example: Beverly Crusher could conceivably serve as your Captain, but Jean-Luc Picard could not be your Doctor.Quark's on the bridge? Trek characters who are not Federation officers but could serve in these roles are eligible. These characters are also eligible to be wildcards.Distribution: Your crew cannot come exclusively from one series.Draft Exclusivity: Once you draft a character, no other player may draft that character to their crew. This includes time travel/Mirror Universe/alternate future counterparts.Sulu's Rule: If a character has multiple jobs over the course of their Starfleet career, that does not mean they are eligible multiple times. If Player A drafts Sulu as their helmsman, Player B cannot draft movie Sulu as their Captain, etc.Combs's Bylaw: Different characters played by the same actor are eligible to be drafted alongside each other or by different players. Player A could draft Weyoun and Brunt (both played by Jeffrey Combs) if they so choose.Uhura's Corollary: When a single character is played by different actors, those different performances are considered one (1) character. If TOS Uhura is drafted, Strange New Worlds Uhura is ineligible. The Riker Exception: Because William Riker gets split into two people in that one episode and his double, Thomas Riker goes on to live a separate, individual life from the point of that split, for the purposes of this Draft both Rikers are eligible. You are allowed to name your ship. You heard right!  The whole cast is doing a LIVE SHOW AT THE BELL HOUSE IN BROOKLYN ON MARCH 30TH.  Rude Tales of Magic: Lent Enders!  Buy your tickets now!!Join our Patreon now for tons more stuff, including AN ENTIRE ADDITIONAL EPISODE EVERY MONTH for patrons only. Last week, more than 9,000 MS research scientists and clinicians from more than 110 countries traveled to Milan to attend the largest MS research conference in the world, the 2023 joint ECTRIMS (European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis) and ACTRIMS (Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis) annual meeting. In keeping with a RealTalk MS tradition, just as the meeting was ending and the thousands of attendees were heading for the exits, I connected with the National MS Society's Chief Advocacy, Services, and Science Officer, Dr. Tim Coetzee, to discuss some of the research that captured his attention during the 3-day meeting. Earlier in the final day of the joint ECTRIMS-ACTRIMS meeting, I connected with Bonnie Higgins, who was in Milan to participate in the ECTRIMS MS Patient Community Day. We've been using the same MS clinical course descriptors (relapsing-remitting, secondary progressive, and primary progressive) for almost three decades. As research has provided so much additional information and insight, is it time to update the way we describe, diagnose, and treat MS? The International Advisory Committee on Clinical Trials in Multiple Sclerosis has established a working group to explore this question. And, as a means of eliciting feedback from stakeholders around the world, a global survey was launched. The National MS Society's Chief Advocacy, Services, and Science Officer, Dr. Tim Coetzee, joins me to share the results of this survey, which may represent a first step toward delivering next-generation MS care. We're just two days away from the Hispanic/Latinx MS Experience Summit! We'll tell you why you don't want to miss this free online event, and we'll even tell you how to register. Who is Eric Lander you are asking?  He served as the Science Officer for the Biden Administration.  He lasted eight months.  He resigned after accusations of bullying and sexism forced the White House to say "ummm, hey, wait a minute, this is supposed to be a stupid-easy cabinet post, why are we hearing so much about you."  Eric Lander had the chance to be a real life Dr. Spock, the first Chief Science Officer on Planet Earth.  Instead he made his staff feel undervalued and apparently this was a super common occurrence when those people happened to be women. It's not like this came without warning.  Eric had to make some public apologies before he was appointed.  He explained during his Congressional Appointment hearing that sometimes he behaved in ways he wasn't proud of and in the same hearing then also apologized for understating the contributions of two female scientist who helped with the discovery of CRISPR technology. Eric happens to have been the President and Founding Member of the Broad Institute (if you are smart you've heard of it and if not...well you've heard of it now so welcome to the smart club).  The Broad Institute happens to be in a patent war with UC Berkley over the discovery of CRISPR and the legal dispute also happens to involve the two scientists whose contributions to the CRISPR field Eric had understated in a published paper (coincidentally, these two Nobel Prize winning scientists also happen to have vaginas).   What is CRISPR you ask?  Well, it's like the internet was in the 1990s: it's this weird thing that people are talking about now that sounds really sci fi and in no way impacts you, and five years from now you will be guzzling some gene enhancing solution to change your eye color to match your shirt.  That is a promise.

On this episode of the Far Out with Faust podcast, neurophysiologist, naturopathic doctor and integrative medicine expert Dr. Francisco Cidral expands our minds with the latest brain enhancing technologies.Dr. Cidral has authored more than 30 A1 (A1 = Highest Grade) scientific publications, as well as several books and is a major contributor to the field of integrative and complementary therapies, with an emphasis on low level light therapy, aka photobiomodulation. He is the Co-founder and Associate Professor of the Laboratory of Experimental Neuroscience(University of Southern Santa Catarina - UNISUL - Brazil). For the past decade, Dr. Cidral has been living in the USA and working on the scientific research and development of innovative health and wellness technology that promotes physical and mental vitality and optimizationthrough his Scientifica Consulting Business.Dr. Cidral is one of the most accomplished scientists we've ever encountered — and it all started with a chronic shoulder injury that was cured through auricular acupuncture. This sent him on a path to learn everything he possibly could about alternative healing modalities and technologies that affect both the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system. If you've ever heard of laser acupuncture, low level light therapy, LED therapy, far infrared energy (we could go on), Dr. Cidral has not only studied it — he's the authority.Through his pioneering work with transcranial photobiomodulation, Dr. Cidral was tapped (couldn't resist) by Dr. Patrick Porter, biohacking guru and founder of BrainTap (did you catch him on episode 13?) for an ongoing collaboration. Dr. Cidral currently serves as the Science Officer of BrainTap, which focuses on Audio-visual Brain Entrainment and Brain Health.Dr. Cidral also authored a chapter in Photobiomodulation in the Brain by Michael Hamblin, PhD., the pioneering researcher from Harvard.WARNING: it's about to get geeky. We're taking a deep dive down into the science behind photobiomodulation, talking oxidative stress, 40 hertz light pulses (aka gamma waves), ATP and photon acceptors. Stay tuned, because Dr. Cidral translates these complex concepts for us mere mortals. We promise, you'll feel smarter. The takeaway? Low light therapy improves sleep, reduces stress, slows aging and releases endorphins hundreds of times more powerful than morphine. Um, yes please.Faust reminds us that the point of living, after all, is to experience joy. So listen along as these two spend time dissecting stress — which is not the problem, by the way. We'll tell you what is, and what you can do about it today. Maybe you've heard about the reptilian brain, that part of the brain that can't distinguish the difference between our perception and reality. You don't want to miss when Dr. Cidral illuminates exactly how meditation and mindfulness overcomes its primitive shortcomings, explaining the three stages of enlightenment.  Catch Faust's true confession about car rides home from the casino with his parents. It's a comical take on the typical blame game ideology that so many of us are stagnating in. It's time we take responsibility for our own pain — to realize that we're the ones behind the curtain pulling the strings. Stay till the end to hear the bombshell that Faust drops about neurons — and where you can find them. Spoiler alert: they're not just in your brain.Dr. Francisco takes us really far out at the end, diving into quantum physics and its relation to Taoist philosophy (listen to podcast 51 with Dr. Barry for more). He describes a mind-blowing experiment about our innate individual power to affect the energy of the vast universe. It's time to get conscious together — we already know the way.
