Jason and Derek drive and discuss the legendary Lancia Stratos – its origins, its parts-bin interior, and its unhinged handling. === Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-Rev === On today's episode, things start off by looking at commenters' nominations for elegant mid-engine cars. Most are promptly rejected, but a handful give the Carmudgeons pause: the De Tomaso P72, McLaren Speedtail, Jaguar XJ220, Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, and Ferrari 296. And two previously overlooked but notably elegant exceptions are: the Ferrari 246 Dino and the first-generation Toyota Previa. Afterwards, it's all things Stratos – starting with Jason's and Derek's driving impressions. They discuss the handling characteristics of this mind-bendingly miniature, Ferrari-engined, rally missile. Thanks to its short, upward-swept overhangs and relatively massive suspension travel, it can traverse rough terrain with ease (including massive potholes and steep driveways), setting it apart from your average sports car experience. But, like a fighter jet, it sacrifices stability in favor of maximum maneuverability. They also cover its diminutive size (the Stratos is 2 feet shorter than a Mk8 VW Golf!) and its parts-bin interior – including the trunk release it shares with the Lamborghini Countach and Ferrari 308 GT4, exterior door handle from the Fiat X1/9, and interior door pull from the Miura (among others). Not to mention its paper-thin fiberglass “firewall,” and very unique hinged side windows. Later on, discussions move to the origins of the car. From the philandering nature of mid-century Italian design houses like Pininfarina and Bertone, which seemed to take turns designing Italy's newest models at the time. Things like the Fiat Dino Coupe and Spider, and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint and Sprint Speciale (not to mention the wild Stratos Zero concept by Marcello Gandini that became the wedge-shaped Stratos) – plus the dubious last-second rally homologation of the Stratos. Lancia's little wedge would go on to race all across the world; from the Acropolis Rally in Greece, to the East African Safari Rally in Kenya, to the Press-on-Regardless Rally in Michigan. The Stratos, which replaced Lancia's too-fragile Fulvia, would prove itself plenty rugged and become a wildly successful rally car (but a total sales flop). Lancia's parent company, Fiat, wanted it out in favor of its new 131, but the Stratos' WRC wins continued thanks to privateers all the way up until the 1980s, when it was finally replaced by the 037. The Stratos Stradale, a car you could buy 50 years ago for the price of a mildly-luxurious contemporary GT like the Alfa Romeo Montreal – now goes for several hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hay gobiernos que, por determinados motivos, sobre todo la seguridad, han prohibido algunos modelos de coches en sus países. En otros casos, sin llegar a prohibirlos, han hecho tal campaña de mala reputación, que han acabado con sus ventas. Y las cosas cambian, según los mercados. Os traemos 10 de estos modelos y nada menos 3 Bonus Track… que probablemente, sean lo más curioso de este vídeo. 1. Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE (2017). En este caso se prohibió su venta en Europa. ¿El motivo? Esos afilados splitters que en caso de atropello podrían actuar casi como una cuchilla. Era un coche caro, pues en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica costaba algo más de 50.000 euros. En Europa, literalmente, no tenía precio. 2. Kia Rio (1997). En Latinoamérica se ha creado la “LATIN NCAP” a imagen y semejanza de la “Euro NACP”. Una magnifica iniciativa, porque hay marcas que los coches que venden en esos mercados son distintos a los europeos, por ejemplo Kia. La versión para los mercados latinoamericanos no contaba con elementos de seguridad y en la prueba de “LATIN NCAP” sobre 5 estrellas posibles… consiguió… ¡cero! 3. Hyundai Grand i10 (2007). Más de lo mismo, no en vano son en realidad la misma empresa. La versión Grand i10 para los mercados norteamericanos contaba con un equipamiento de seguridad netamente peor. Como resultado de todo ello en la prueba “LATIN NCAP” alcanzó exactamente… 0 estrellas. 4. Jaguar XJ220S (1992). Este modelo fue muy minoritario, porque solo se construyeron 281 unidades. Y fue un modelo cuya venta fue prohibida en los USA por un motivo muy sencillo: Con un motor de 549 CV se le consideraba peligroso, difícil de conducir… e innecesario en un país donde los límites de velocidad son muy estrictos. 5. Lotus Elise Serie I (1996). En este caso no era tanto la potencia, pues su motor de origen Rover con cuatro cilindros en línea y atmosférico ofrecía potencias entre los 120 y los 192 caballos. Fue su bajo peso de solo 720 kilos que conseguían que su conducción fuese muy deportiva… de hecho demasiado para las autoridades norteamericanas. Para llegar a ese peso, además de un chasis de paneles de aluminio pegado con resinas, se renunciaron a “detalles” como el techo o las ventanillas. 6. Lotus Omega (1990). Las autoridades del Reino Unido consideraron un vehículo muy peligroso al Lotus Omega de 377 CV. Los argumentos no son nada convincentes, pues decían que no tenían reparos en que un deportivo fuera tan rápido, pero no que lo fuese una berlina pensada para viajar con cuatro o cinco ocupantes. Estas críticas sociales y sobre todo la recesión económica que llegó con la década de los 90, hizo que el éxito del Omega fue más bien reducido. 7. McLaren Speedtail (2019). Otro modelo prohibido en los USA. Hay dos motivos, el primero, no cuenta con retrovisores convencionales, sino con cámaras y pantallas… a los “yanquis” esto no les gusta, les debe parecer demasiado moderno. El segundo, su configuración de tres asientos que no permite la instalación de airbags laterales en el asiento central por razones obvias. 8. Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R (1991). NHTSA son las siglas de la Administración Nacional de Seguridad del Tráfico en las Carreteras dependiente del Departamento de Transporte de los Estados Unidos. Y son los que hacen y deshacen, según su criterio, discutible criterio. En 1991 pensaron que el Nissan R34 GT-R era demasiado potente, con sus casi 300 CV y alrededor de 1.500 kg. para ir por carretera, insisto, unas carreteras con unos límites de velocidad muy estrictos… 9. Pagani Zonda (1999). Sencillamente Pagani no vende ninguno de sus coches en los USA. Cuando Horacio Pagani quiso legalizar sus coches en los USA los primero que le pidieron fue uno de sus coches para estrellarlo… hablamos de un coche con un valor de casi medio millón de euros. Antes de estrellarlo la ya citada NHTSA dijo a Pagani que tendría que cambiar su sistema de airbags… Pagani hizo números y pensó: “Estrellar un coche nuevo, medio millón de dólares, desarrollar un nuevo sistema de airbags entre 3 y 4 millones… ¿Cuántos coches puedo vender en los USA? ¿10? ¡15? No me salen las cuentas… 10. TVR Cervera (1996). Hicimos un video titulado “Historia TVR: Los deportivos más peligrosos”. Y es que estos coches, como culto a la conducción más pura, renuncian a todos aquellos sistemas de ayuda electrónica que no sean estrictamente obligatorios…. Prohibieron en los USA este modelo por ser demasiado rápido y peligroso como para que le dejaran circular por la calle debido a sus 400 CV de potencia y reducido peso de poco más de una tonelada.

¡Ojo! Esta no es otra lista más de coches carísimos. No. Es una lista especial porque, sencillamente, la mayoría de ellos no me gustan. Me parecen destinados a los aficionados al dinero más que a los aficionados a los coches. Como siempre en estas listas se puede discrepar, porque hay coches casi hechos por encargo y “a la carta” que no están aquí y que pueden superar en precio a los que hemos escogido.Voy a ordenarlos por precio, comenzando por los más “baratos” … y a calificarlos con algún adjetivo… Bentley Batur: 2 millones € Comenzamos con el más asequible de esta lista, un Bentley de dos toneladas de peso, motor W12 biturbo de unos 750 CV y todo el equipamiento que puedas imaginar. ¿Para qué sirve este coche? ¿Para viajar? y ¿dónde aparcas cuando pares a comer? Porque un coche así no lo puedes dejar en cualquier sitio. Mi calificación es que se trata de un coche para… ¡nuevos ricos! Solo para 18 nuevos ricos, no se van a fabricar más. Aston Martin Valkyrie: 2,5 millones € Es la lo más parecido a un monoplaza de F1 que puedas matricular con poco más de 1.000 kilos de peso y 1.160 CV procedentes de su motor V12 atmosférico. Sólo se fabricarán 150 unidades y la pregunta es: ¿Quién se va a comprar? Te lo digo yo, ¡nadie! y es que por 10 veces menos… repito, ¡10 veces menos! Te compras el 911 GT3 RS. Lo tengo claro clarísimo… este coche para mi es… ¡absurdo! Ferrari Daytona SP3: 2,5 millones € Y es que Ferrari, con su serie “Icona” de coches inspirados en leyendas quiere parte del pastel, Lógico. Este modelo se trata de un “hypercar” como los de otras marcas, pero con el “Cavallino” en el capó. A pesar de que tiene “solo” 840 CV procedentes de un V12 atmosférico, me voy a atrever a calificarlos con coche de… ¡ensueño! McLaren Speedtail: 2,5 millones € Pretende ser lo más de los más de McLaren, se fabricarán unas 100 unidades con sus 3 plazas y 1.070 CV. Para disfrutar de un coche en circuito para mi le sobaran caballos y dinero… Así que lo voy a calificar de… ¡absurdo! Prefiero otros modelos de McLaren. Koenigsegg CC8: 3,5 millones € Subimos la apuesta en un milloncito y nos vamos a una de esas marcas de nombre impronunciable: Koenigsegg. Justo es reconocer que, de estos fabricantes suecos, de lo que antes se llamaba “supercars” y ahora “hypercars” son los de mayor historia y tradición. De este modelo con motor V8 biturbo y 1.385 CV solo se fabricarán 70 unidades… Para mí, a pesar de mi simpatía por la marca, es un coche para… nuevos ricos. Gordon Murray Automotive T.50: 3,5 millones de € El bueno de Murray, diseñador entre otros del primer McLaren de calle, ha decidido ganar un dinerillo y fabricar 25 coches a la “antigua usanza” con muchos caballos a base de cilindrada y sin turbo, un V12 de 4 litros y 710 CV… que me parecen muchos sin turbo, ligero, muy ligero, con menos de 900 kg, con pocas ayudas electrónicas y relativamente barato. Lo calificaría de… interesante. Bugatti Mistral: 5 millones de € Os explico de que va este coche: Partes de un Chiron y le quitas el techo. Como el coche pesa un montón, más cerca de 2 toneladas que de una y media, tienes que reforzar el chasis y eso cuesta una pasta. Eso sí, conservas la tracción total y el motor de 16 cilindros, 4 turbocompresores, 8 litros y 1.600 CV, para que tu coche una velocidad punta limitada a… 420 km/h… sin techo… porque no está previsto un techo duro. En circuito es pesado, por la calle torpe y excesivo e ir a 400 km/h sin techo no solo es ilegal, es estúpido. ¿Mi valoración? Sin duda… una pesadilla. Pagani Huayra Codalunga: 7 millones de € Otro clásicos dentro de los ”Hypercars” los coches de Pagani… pero en esta ocasión Horacio Pagani ha rizado el rizo con su programa denominado “Grande complicazioni”. O sea, que lo que verdaderamente mola de este coche es lo complicado que es su motor V12 biturbo de 840 CV y su sofisticado chasis… Muy complicado debe ser, pues solo piensan fabricar 5… Mi valoración es… “sacacuartos”. Mercedes Maybach Exelero: 8 millones de € Realmente este coche no debería estar aquí, pues se trata de un prototipo único, pero le he incluido por dos motivos: Uno, porque se acabó vendiendo al Sr. Bryan Williams… ¿no le conocéis? Es un rapero cuyo nombre artístico es “Birdman”. Rolls Royce Boat Tail: 23 millones de € ¡Se me agolpan los adjetivos! Y mira que me gusta Rolls, pero este coche que pretende emular a un barco es una creación única… a Dios gracias. Lleva en el maletero un set para hacer picnic… ¿os imagináis una estupidez mayor que comprar un coche de 23 millones de euros para ir al campo a hacer picnic? Coche del día. Después de hablar del Porsche 911 GT3… ¡pues me ilusiona poder tener este coche para rodar en circuito! Además, si se te queda “pequeño” hay multitud de opciones de potenciación… y no es un coche complejo y sí muy fiable.
