Dass die Fans von sportlichen Automobilen gerne mal den Blick nach Italien richten, ist nicht von der Hand zu weisen. Gegründet wurde das Ursprungsunternehmen am 24. Juni 1910 in Mailand. A.L.F.A.  ist übrigens ein Akronym für Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. 1915 übernahm der neapolitanische Unternehmer Nicola Romeo das Unternehmen und ändert den Namen 1918 in Alfa Romeo. Darum geht es diesmal!Bei Automobilherstellern gibt es unterschiedliche Methoden, Namen für die Fahrzeuge zu finden. Da werden zum einen hochbezahlte Sprachspezialisten beauftragt, einen Namen zu finden, der weltweit funktioniert, auf den niemand irgendwelche Rechte hat und der vor allem zum neuen Auto passt. Dann gibt es Automarken, bei denen Ortschaften oder Landstriche Namensgeber sind. Bei Alfa Romeo sind es zumindest in zwei Fällen norditalienische Passstraßen. Das gilt sowohl für den Stelvio, als auch für den Tonale, den wir heute vorstellen.Power und Drive!Zwar gibt es den Alfa Romeo Tonale schon mit einer Leistung von 96 kW (130 PS) bzw. 118 kW (160 PS), aber als echter Alfista ist man natürlich auf der Suche nach Fahrspaß und entsprechend viel Leistung. Hier bietet sich der 206 kW (280 PS) starke Q4 an. Der Antrieb wurde exklusiv für den neuen Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 entwickelt, er kombiniert einen 1,3 Liter großen Verbrenner mit vier Zylindern, der für sich genommen eine Leistung von 132 kW (180 PS) hat und einen an der Hinterachse angeordneten Elektromotor mit 90 kW (122 PS).  Die Systemleistung von 206 kW (280 PS) sorgt für eine Beschleunigung von nur 6,2 Sekunden von null auf Tempo 100 km/h und eine Spitzengeschwindigkeit von 206 km/h. Rein elektrisch sind es 135 km/h, die maximale Reichweite beträgt dann mehr als 80 Kilometer im Stadtverkehr und mehr als 60 km im Durchschnitt. Der Allradantrieb ist elektronisch geregelt, er garantiert ein „Alfa-typisches“ Beschleunigungserlebnis und Fahrvergnügen.  Apropos Fahrvergnügen: Beim neuen Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 wird der bewährte DNA-Regler für die Fahrdynamikregelung zum Auswählen verschiedener Fahrprogramme zu einem Symbol für effiziente Sportlichkeit.Die Kosten!In der Grundausstattung Sprint mit 96 KW (130 PS) gibt es den Alfa Tonale ab 40.800 €, da wir aber bekanntlich über die Version mit 206 KW (280 PS), also den Q4 Plug-in sprechen, müssen Sie sich darauf einstellen, zwischen 51.600 € bzw. 62.100 € zuzüglich möglicher Zusatzausstattungen auf den Tisch des Alfa-Händlers zu legen. But back to the cars: All of the innovation in the car industry these days is happening at the nontraditional OEMs. Which necessarily means that all of the interesting stories are about EVs.  And yet every time Jason does a review of an EV, it incites an online war between EV fans and ICE fans. And when Telsa's passionate fans and detractors become involved on X (formerly known as Twitter) it gets personal. Suddenly, Jason is vilified and "loses his credibility." This reality has caused Jason to take a serious look at the possibility of no longer reviewing new cars. He wonders if his personal interest in them is too small to put up with the backlash — and maybe he should concentrate on the older cars he loves more? On the other hand, is that letting the armchair warriors win? Perhaps. But the larger trend, as Jeremy Clarkson pointed out recently, is that new cars are shit.  And it was the Alfa Romeo Tonale that highlighted Jason's concerns. Not because it's a bad car — it's not — but Jason had a hard time getting excited about a 1.3-liter PHEV compact SUV with an Alfa Romeo badge on it. It has none of the qualities he likes in cars. And specifically none of the qualities (other than gorgeous green paint) that he feels are appropriate for a brand like Alfa Romeo. Alfa Romeo might be best known for its Formula 1 presence, or its sporty convertibles that help stop weddings in major motion pictures. Unfortunately, the two-seat cabriolet isn't exactly helping major automakers keep their lights on. Steering into the meat of the market, the folks at Alfa Romeo launched a sub-compact crossover dubbed Tonale. The Tonale might not be as exciting as its larger Stelvio sibling, or the long list of sporty Alfas of yesteryear, but it does help spread the brand's awareness and give shoppers something different in a sea of crossovers. Powering the Tonale is exclusively a plug-in hybrid powertrain that blends a 1.3-liter I4 with a hybrid system to send 285 hp to the wheels. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's Patrick Carone hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale and puts it through its paces. Jill and Tom opened the episode talking a little about the Detroit Auto Show which opens this week. The hosts will have complete coverage of the event next week. Tom complained a little about the Infiniti QX50 premium compact crossover. Though Tom generally likes the vehicle, he is annoyed that its much-promote high-tech VC-Turbo engine has not imbued the crossover with either standout power, or impressive fuel economy. Jill and Tom went on to review the 2023 Nissan Ariya compact electric crossover which both hosts basically love. Jill is annoyed that Nissan has done little to promoted the vehicle, which Tom suggests is part of the plan, and that Nissan may not yet be ready to deliver the Ariya in serious volume, and that stepped-up advertising is on hold for now. The duo welcome Ken Chester of the Tech Mobility Show in the second segment. Ken walked Tom and Jill through the adoption of ChatGPT by automotive dealers, and how the technology can be used, and misused, in that application. In the third segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Fun Car Engine” quiz. Jill and Tom wrapped up the show discussing the all-new Alfa Romeo Tonale small crossover, which Jill is driving this week.

Dodge's small-car history goes all the way back to the 1960s with the A-body-based Lancer, which was quickly replaced by the legendary Dart in 1963. Later down the line, Dodge's compact car portfolio gave us ‘80s icons like the Omni GLHS and the L-body-based Dodge Shelby Charger. There are also noteworthy products like Dodge's Neon that helped shape the ‘90s. Despite success through the ages, Dodge abandoned the compact car with the demise of its Dart in 2016. Though, Dodge is rentering the small-car field with its compact crossover Hornet. Sharing its platform with the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the Hornet is adding a new entry point for Dodge shoppers, and expanding Dodge's reach as a company. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's Patrick Carone hops behind the wheel of the 2023 Dodge Hornet GT and takes you along for the ride.
