In this eye-opening episode of The Clay Edwards Show, we dive deep into the frustrating saga of John Arthur Banks, a notorious downtown Jackson, Mississippi bum who's been terrorizing local businesses for over two decades. From my days owning nightclubs in downtown Jackson (2003-2011), I've seen this guy's harassment firsthand. Despite being arrested for burglarizing at least 15 businesses and pleading guilty SIX TIMES, Banks keeps getting released thanks to Hinds County's infamous "catch and release" program. He's free to strike again in a city fighting to recover from eight years under Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba's socialist policies. Jackson beat New York to electing a radical mayor—want proof of "communism done right"? Come tour Jacktown with me. We break down the shocking details from Jackson Jambalaya's latest exposé: Banks' criminal history spanning 2009-2024, lenient sentences from judges like Bill Gowan, William Kidd, Faye Peterson, Johnny McDaniels, and Damon Stevenson, and the DA's failures (shoutout to Jody Owens). Highlights include: 2009: Indicted for business burglary; pleaded guilty, full 5-year sentence suspended. 2017: Burglary at Jocko's Tacos; 7 years, 4 suspended (lived at Gateway Shelter). 2018: Burglary at Stanley's Wine and Liquor; 7 years, 3 suspended (concurrent with 2017). 2019: Burglary at Downtown Snack Shop; 7 years, 2 suspended + drug/alcohol treatment. 2020: Two counts for Greenbrook Flowers and Iron Horse Grill (2019 hits); 7 years, 2 suspended. 2022: Burglary at the Hood Building; 7 years, 2 suspended (no habitual offender enhancement). 2022 (again): 10 COUNTS including La Cazuela, Kiefer's, Shero's, Pizza and Daiquiri Shop, Steve's Deli, Mississippi Farmers Market, Downtown Drugstore, Pig and Pint, Finian's, and Tatum & Wade Law Firm—remanded as part of prior case. 2024: Capitol Police arrest for Downtown Drugstore, Native Coffee, and Lou's Restaurant (plus another); 1-year revocation, but paroled quickly. Indicted as habitual offender—trial set for July 2026. This guy's an economic terrorist, driving away customers and businesses. We also touch on recent closures: Arby's on High Street shutting down for good, plus PetSmart (I-55 North) and TJ Maxx (East County Line Road) relocating to Ridgeland's Highland Colony Parkway. Why? Crime and mismanagement—Jackson going full "Jackson." My raw, unfiltered reaction: No sympathy for these repeat offenders. I've dealt with them for years—most stories are lies, just excuses for dope. Police do their job, but prosecutors, judges, and MDOC keep releasing them. Businesses are fleeing—can you blame them? Sponsored by Men's Health of Mississippi: Guys, if you're dealing with low energy, stubborn belly fat, lack of muscle tone, reduced sex drive, or no morning wood, it could be low testosterone. I'm a client—3 years in, down 80 pounds, metabolic age of 36 (I'm 48!), and in the best shape ever. Get a FREE testosterone screening at their Madison clinic. In Sickness and In Chains: The Human Cost of Prison Medical Neglect w/ Darwin PageIn this episode, we sit down with Darwin Page, who endured a devastating medical ordeal while incarcerated in Michigan's prison system. What began as a surgery spiraled into a nightmare of infections, untreated complications, and neglect so severe that he lost his right toe and required further surgery on the heel of both of his feet. Darwin's story is not an isolated incident—it's part of a much larger pattern of systemic medical abuse and neglect inside the Michigan Department of Corrections. We connect Darwin's experience to the ongoing case of Krystal Denise Clark, who is currently housed at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility, who is now fighting for her life after years of untreated medical conditions and exposure to toxic mold. Her case, like Darwin's, reveals the deadly consequences of a prison healthcare system that routinely fails those in its custody.Together, their stories highlight the urgent truth: incarceration should not be a death sentence, and denying medical care is both a moral failure and a human rights violation. Also joining us is Lukey Lawson who was recently exonerated.***Turning A Moment Into A Movement Podcast MISSION:To bring awareness, organize, and create content that will be a resource that will aide families, communities, and those seeking Justice for WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS and Injustice. ...and advocating for Justice & Exoneration for GERARD HAYCRAFT. www.change.org/Justice4GerardTurning A Moment Ino A Moment Team:-Jay Love Host: Founder and Creator of Turning A Moment Into A Movement, The Justice for Gerard Movement, to learn more about The Justice for Gerard Movement go to: www.change.org/Justice4GerardExecutive Board member of Michigan Coalition of Human Rights, G100 Prison Reforms & Reintegration Global Advisory Council Member-Rev. “Trying to Survive From Hell!” ....URGENT MEDICAL ALERT — KRYSTAL DENISE CLARKIn this urgent episode, we break down the life-or-death struggle of Krystal Denise Clark, a wrongfully incarcerated woman trapped inside Michigan's Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility — a prison already under federal investigation for toxic mold, medical neglect, and human rights abuses. Krystal is now battling a confirmed invasive fungal infection (Aspergillus niger) — growing in both ears, her respiratory tract, and potentially her lungs. Recent infectious disease exams have revealed facial nerve palsy, visible facial swelling, a thyroid goiter, severe skin breakdown, and chronic respiratory symptoms. Doctors have warned she will not survive without immediate antifungal treatment and removal from the prison's mold-infested environment.Listeners will hear the disturbing medical timeline — from repeated failed treatments, ignored doctor's orders, and broken promises of care, to the June 24, 2025 federal court ruling acknowledging the dangerous prison conditions. We'll explain how MDOC's refusal to follow urgent medical recommendations is accelerating Krystal's decline and pushing her toward permanent disability or death. This is more than a prison health crisis — it's a civil rights emergency. We'll share ways you can help pressure officials, demand Krystal's release, and stand against systemic neglect that treats incarcerated lives as disposable.TO LEARN MORE ABOUT KRYSTAL CLARK:fightingforkrystalclark | Instagram, Facebook | Linktree***Turning A Moment Into A Movement Podcast MISSION:To bring awareness, organize, and create content that will be a resource that will aide families, communities, and those seeking Justice for WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS and Injustice. ...and advocating for Justice & Exoneration for GERARD HAYCRAFT. www.change.org/Justice4GerardTurning A Moment Ino A Moment Team:-Jay Love Host: Founder and Creator of Turning A Moment Into A Movement, The Justice for Gerard Movement, to learn more about The Justice for Gerard Movement go to: www.change.org/Justice4GerardExecutive Board member of Michigan Coalition of Human Rights, G100 Prison Reforms & Reintegration Global Advisory Council Member-Rev. “Krystal Clark vs. Huron Valley: The Mold, The Cover-Up, The Fight”For years, Krystal Clark has sounded the alarm about the life-threatening conditions inside Michigan's only women's prison. Black mold drips from the ceilings. The air is toxic. The walls themselves are crumbling. But instead of fixing the problem, officials tried to hide it—until now.In this episode, we break down the latest federal court ruling that exposes the truth about Huron Valley Correctional Facility. We'll unpack how Krystal's fight for survival has become a legal battle for every woman trapped inside. Recently, I caught up with Temujin Kensu, a man who has been incarcerated since 1986 for a crime he couldn't possibly have committed. Temujin has endured a great deal over his nearly 40 years behind bars, and as he gets older, his health issues have become a daily struggle. This struggle has recently been made even harder by the MDOC confiscating items he relies on to manage his medical needs. In this conversation, Temujin talks us through why he believes this has happened, and the serious ramifications—including the possibility that he may be moved to a maximum-security prison. But it's not all bad news. Recently, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that mandatory life without parole sentences for individuals aged between 19 and 20 are unconstitutional. This landmark decision could open a path toward Temujin's eventual release.Join the One Minute Remaining Jury via Appl + HERE and get OMR early and ad free for as little as $1.69 a week!Become a Jury member on Patreon and find us on Facebook here.Tix to True Cime? the LIVE show with me and Comedy's Ed Kavalee here Hosted on Acast. #FactsMatter, the Citizens Research Council of Michigan podcast
Citizens Research Council health policy analyst Karley Abramson is interviewed by guest host Andrew Minegar, a reporter with MIRS News. Last year, Abramson wondered why there was a stark rise in healthcare spending by the Michigan Department of Corrections, one of state government's largest general fund budgets. In subsequently published research, she discovered that there was no data to review. Minegar/MIRS News recently uncovered and reported that the state's former prisoners' healthcare contractor owes providers $35 million in unpaid medical bills, prompting the state to drop the contract before it ended and to go to court to recover damages. Grand Prairie Healthcare Services, based in Tennessee, was awarded a nearly $600 million five-year contract in April 2021 to provide the Michigan Department of Correction (MDOC) with health care and pharmacy services for prisoners at 27 state prisons. Listen to Abramson and Minegar as they compare notes and discuss what they believe should be done by the Legislature and Administration.
PIKE COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT) - The suspect who shot and killed a Summit Police officer Thursday had a warrant filed weeks earlier, ordering law enforcement to arrest him for violating conditions of a 2020 prison release, according to records obtained exclusively by 3 On Your Side. Our investigation reveals that Usher Leonard, 25, had violated his post-release supervision requirements by failing to check in with the Mississippi Department of Corrections for more than a year. It's unclear whether Leonard's apparent violation of the law might have played a role in what took place Wednesday when state investigators say he shot and killed Summit Police Officer Troy Floyd. However, WLBT found the affidavit supporting a warrant for Leonard's arrest came nearly 20 months before the court apparently approved it, on October 10, 2022. The court did not provide any documentation for the delay in its official filings or docket. Leonard's post-release conditions stemmed from a 2018 conviction on 11 burglary counts and eight counts of conspiracy to commit burglary in Pike County. He served two years of a six-year sentence, with MDOC releasing him through earned release supervision. Seven months later, authorities found Leonard had violated his post-release conditions by failing to pay court fines or complete his restitution.

"THE VALLEY OF DEATH" "Krystal Clark is an incarcerated person at MDOC Huron Valley Women Facility. Ms. Clark and others have been advocating for their health after becoming ill from the toxic mold inside the women's prison. They even file a lawsuit in 2019. On August 25th, 2023, federal judge Victoria A. Roberts for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan dismissed the lawsuit brought by the women prisoners. MDOC stated that " There are no cases establishing a prisoner's right to be free from these molds (Ochotonids, Cladosporium and Chaetomium), that it is not clearly established that any type of mold at WHV is sufficiently dangerous to incarcerated people, and EVEN IF IT WERE CLEARLY ESTABLISHED THAT CERTAIN MOLDS WERE DANGEROUS ENOUGH TO IMPLICATE THE EIGHTH AMENDMENT, IT IS NOT CLEARLY ESTABLISHED THAT PRISON OFFICIALS NEED TO TAKE ANY PARTICULAR ACTION TO REMEDIATE THE PRESENCE OF MOLD." We will hear from Krystal, her family and others about the mold condition at Huron Valley. Additional Guest: Paula Kensu who is working on clemency application for Krystal. Sarah Lightner, R-Springport, sent a letter to Ringler requesting a review of staffing shortages and alleged violations of federal and state labor regulations within the Michigan Department of Corrections. The MDOC has more than 13,000-full time positions as of fiscal year 2023. Hello and welcome back to another discussion surrounding the corruption in our Judicial System. Specifically Michigan. As this is where this conversation resides. MDOC. Lakeland facility. The inmates name John Ortiz-Kehoe. Johns case was a notoriously infamous case that allegedly involved a particularly heinous murder of a young woman. The victim's family reported her missing sometime in December 1993. Approximately 2 1/212 years later, Billy Brown, fearing that police were close to making an arrest in the case, confessed that he was present when defendant killed the victim and that he helped to conceal the body. He denied, however, that he took part in the killing. In exchange for his testimony against defendant, he was charged as an accessory after the fact. Billy, the only eyewitness to the crime, served as the prosecution's main witness. Defendant testified in his own defense. The two accounts of events leading up to the killing were similar in many respects. However, defendant testified that he left Billy and the victim alone, and Billy killed her when she refused to have sex with him. Billy testified that defendant killed the victim because she was defendant's old girlfriend, she obsessed over defendant and interfered with his other relationships, and she had damaged his truck on more than one occasion. Billy further testified that defendant killed her while he watched. Together they disposed of the body in a process that involved mutilation, incineration, cannibalism, and burial. According to the National Registry of Exonerations, wrongful convictions statistics show that the percentage of wrongful convictions is somewhere between 2% and 10%. Keeping in mind that there are over 2.3 million incarcerated people in the U. S., that means there's almost 50,000 to way over 200,000 innocent people behind bars. Wrongful convictions statistics show false accusations are present in 70% of wrongful convictions. Perjury or false accusations are more common in murder cases. Withholding exculpatory evidence was present in 75% of wrongful convictions. In 93 of 143 exonerated cases, evidence was withheld at some point in the proceedings by the police or the prosecution. It's present in 75% of homicide exonerations and in around 50% of other crimes not involving homicide. Please keep the above Stats in mind as you listen to Andre Lee Nelson's Wrongful Conviction story. Andre Lee Nelson has served over 30 years in MDOC, he has never had an infraction or incident, and has maintain his stance of innocence his entire incarceration. This week the family members of Andre Nelson will join us to discuss how a man who could not read nor write, with an IQ of 55.... which is considered intellectually disabled, write and sign a confession.... In this episode our guest Kawana Baldwin “Eyelash Keene” shared her perspectives on generational wealth and her journey. In 2005, Kawana began her career with the Michigan Department of Corrections as a Parole Agent, then promoted to a Lead Agent, and later advanced to a Workforce Development Specialist. Kawana developed job opportunities and programming for an underserved and disadvantaged population. She bridged the gap in communication between MDOC, the business community, community organizations, and other local and state government agencies in the Metro Detroit Area and other regions of the state. In 2015, she encountered an opportunity to earn residual income by becoming a makeup consultant. Two years into selling makeup and growing her makeup business exponentially it reignited an interest she had in the beauty industry since the age of 12 years old. She grew her make-up business with 30+ women trailing her. It was at this moment she realized her natural gift and talent in the world of beauty was truly a spiritual journey of self-discovery, passion and purpose. In 2017, she enrolled in beauty school to study skincare with a focus on mastering the art of extending the natural hairs of women's eyelashes, shaping and sculpting eyebrows, and removing unwanted body hairs. Since then, Kawana has fast-tracked her career in the beauty industry and today is professionally known as “The Eyelash Kween”. She is the Owner and Manager of “The Eyelash Kween, Skin, Brow, and Lash Studio” in Dearborn Heights, MI. She's a Licensed Esthetician, a Master Lash & Brow Artist, a Professional & Permanent Makeup Artist, and a Licensed Instructor. She is also the owner of Eyelash Kween Supplies, an online retail business where she provides eyelash extension tools and supplies for other Lash Artists and provide 3-D Lash Strips and Magnetic Eyelashes for women whose natural eyelashes are not suitable for eyelash extensions. She started this business to help meet the needs of artists locally and globally with a focus on empowering both men and women to discover their true purpose in life and starting their own business. On July 9, 2021, with the support of her husband and daughter, Kawana stepped out on faith and resigned from her 16-and-a-half-year career with the State of Michigan to continue her spiritual journey walking in true passion and purpose.
