Welcome to December! The final countdown of 2024 has begun, and I'll admit—I love this time of year! December offers the perfect invitation to reflect on the past year and reset for the year ahead. No matter what 2024 held for you, the new year offers an incredible opportunity to reinvent yourself. The holidays naturally bring a rhythm of rest and indulgence, which often means letting go of healthy habits. That's why, come January, many of us are craving a fresh start. In today's episode, I want to create space for you to reflect on 2024. I'll share some personal lessons and wins from this year, and I'll invite you to do the same. From this place of reflection, we can begin to envision what we want for 2025. Celebrating Wins When I work with clients, I always start follow-ups by asking them to share two things that are working and one thing that isn't. Why? Because our brains are wired to focus on the negative. Research shows celebrating progress strengthens habits—this isn't about ignoring challenges but valuing both sides of the coin. My biggest win of 2024: Improving my sleep! For over two years, I struggled with insomnia. Here's how I overcame it: Living in alignment with my values. Using biofeedback to understand my body's mineral balance. For example, I learned that my sodium-magnesium imbalance was contributing to my sleep issues. Through a hair tissue mineral analysis, I discovered: Sodium indirectly affects magnesium absorption through electrolyte balance. Proper gut motility (supported by adequate sodium levels) impacts magnesium absorption. Rehydration therapy optimized conditions for mineral uptake. Client wins worth celebrating: Deepening my faith, which transformed my relationship with alcohol. Letting go of macro-counting and intuitively building meals. Shifting from perfectionism to creating sustainable health patterns. Take a moment to think about your health-related wins from this year. What are you proud of? Lessons Learned An empowered mindset thrives on a “win or learn” approach. Growth happens when we lean into challenges. Here's one of mine: Leaving my 9-to-5. This year, I transitioned to a more flexible work life, which meant my structured routine disappeared. With my husband's unpredictable law enforcement schedule and my kids' activities, consistency flew out the window. My lesson? Focus on rhythms, not rigid schedules. Here's how this looks in practice: On days my husband leaves for work at 6 a.m. (my usual workout time), I adjust by walking the dog, hopping on the bike early, or prioritizing higher-intensity workouts later in the week. Following the “Exercise is Medicine” guidelines (30-60 minutes of exercise 3-5 days per week), I shifted from “CrossFit or nothing” to prioritizing movement in various forms. Reflection Questions: What rhythms served you well this year? What didn't align with your goals? Gratitude and Growth Gratitude is the key to growth. It's about celebrating progress over perfection and recognizing that small, consistent actions lead to lasting change. Vision for 2025: Your Healthiest Year Yet What does it mean to be your healthiest self? Health isn't just about physical fitness. It includes mental clarity, emotional resilience, and living in alignment with your values. Using the Empowered Eating Method, we'll move beyond discipline and rigidity to create sustainable, life-giving habits. Creating Rhythms, Not Resolutions Resolutions often fail because they're too rigid. Instead, focus on habits. For example: Replace “I'll lose 20 pounds” with “I'll add a vegetable to every meal.” Put Yourself in Growth-Oriented Spaces Surround yourself with people who think the way you want to think. Growth is uncomfortable but transformative—whether in business, health, or personal life. Alguna vez he hecho crónica de mis carreras. Carrie Bennett was the most popular episode of 2022 on The Red Light Report, and I was lucky enough to get the chance to sit down with her again to geek out some more on the quantum side of biology and health. We dig a little deeper into the foundational tenants of quantum health: light, water and magnetism. It is within these three pillars that you must be concentrating the majority of your efforts in order to optimize mitochondrial health and bear the fruit of limitless energy and vitality. You simply need to understand the principles... which is where Carrie's expertise comes in!Carrie discusses some newer topics on today's episode, such as why she is no longer a fan of supplementing vitamin D, along with other analogous "supplements" that our hormones already produced in our body. She delves into the topic of hydration and why she thinks that is one of the most overlooked areas of health and one of the lowest hanging fruits from a quantum energetic perspective. Carrie also discusses how diluted ocean water may be one of the missing links to a more vibrant healthspan. For those of you that haven't listened to that first interview —  and even those that have!  — I highly recommend going back and listening to it, as Carrie is an absolute expert in quantum health and is an amazing source of information and education (the link for that episode is in the show notes). Abstract: Tardigrades can survive hostile environments such as desiccation by adopting a state of anhydrobiosis. Numerous tardigrade species have been described thus far, and recent genome and transcriptome analyses revealed that several distinct strategies were employed to cope with harsh environments depending on the evolutionary lineages. Detailed analyses at the cellular and subcellular levels are essential to complete these data. In this work, we analyzed a tardigrade species that can withstand rapid dehydration, Ramazzottius varieornatus. Surprisingly, we noted an absence of the anhydrobiotic-specific extracellular structure previously described for the Hypsibius exemplaris species. Both Ramazzottius varieornatus and Hypsibius exemplaris belong to the same evolutionary class of Eutardigrada. Nevertheless, our observations reveal discrepancies in the anhydrobiosis mechanisms between these two species. Interestingly, these discrepancies are correlated with their variations in dehydration resistance. Copy rights belong to original authors. This is a link post for "Salt, Sugar, Water, Zinc: How Scientists Learned to Treat the 20th Century's Biggest Killer of Children" in the second issue of Asterisk Magazine, now out. The question it poses is: oral rehydration therapy, which has saved millions of lives a year since it was developed, is very simple. It uses widely available ingredients. Why did it take until the late 1960s to come up with it? There's sort of a two part answer. The first part is that without a solid theoretical understanding of the problem you're trying to solve, it's (at least in this case) ludicrously difficult to solve it empirically: people kept trying variants on this, and they didn't work, because an important parameter was off and they had no idea which direction to correct in. The second is that the incredible simplicity of the modern formula for oral rehydration therapy is the product of a lot of concerted design effort not just to find something that worked against cholera but to find something dead simple which did only require household ingredients and was hard to get wrong. The fact the final solution is so simple isn't because oral rehydration is a simple problem, but because researchers kept on going until they had a sufficiently simple solution. Thanks for listening. Running Performance: The Importance of Recovery

She Runs Eats Performs

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 1, 2022 49:41

Running Performance: The Importance of Recovery Recovery from training is now viewed as being as important to running performance as training itself. Recovery is recognised as the time period between the end of one bout of training and the subsequent return to resting or recovered state...BUT....factors including: nutrition, hydration and sleep could determine how efficiently the body "resets" following exercise, therefore these factors would be implicated in how long the recovery period would need to be. So, in this episode we delve into WHY optimal recovery is important and outline some nutritional and lifestyle strategies to put in place that may help YOU achieve efficient recovery from training.   SHOW NOTES:  (06:36) Defining RECOVERY from training as ……the time period between the end of a bout of exercise and the subsequent return to a resting or recovered state.  (10:54) Outlining the reasons WHY adequate recovery from training is recommended including: Positive training adaptations Prevention of non-functional overreaching and overtraining syndrome Prevention of illness and injury Increased exercise performance Also: introducing the seven Rs to Recovery: Rest Regeneration Resynthesis, Reduction (of inflammation), Restoration, Refuelling and Rehydration.  (14:48) Highlighting the TWO recognised approaches to recovery:  Passive Recovery – complete rest Active Recovery – LOW INTENSITY physical activity  (17:55) FEMALE FACTORS Women appear to experience slower recovery rates in the latter phase of their monthly cycle when compared with training recovery during the first half of their monthly cycle.  A New Zealand study compared recovery from training in women experiencing a natural cycle with women taking the Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP). They determined that women who took combination contraception experienced the most pronounced reduction in recovery from training load, followed by women taking progestin only medications. Women who had a natural cycle were shown to have the most efficient recovery from training.  It has been found that women may recover from training faster than their male counterparts… and experience less fatigue (20:59) Delving into some nutritional strategies to support optimal recovery from training including: Carbohydrates: consuming 8-10g/Kg Body Weight per day AFTER exercise to support repletion of glycogen  Hydration: Replacing fluids by 150% Protein: consuming 0.3g/Kg Body Weight every 3-5 hours AFTER exercise to support muscle protein synthesis Probiotic supplementation: DAILY to help reduce exercise-induced oxidative stress (36:12) Introducing some lifestyle strategies to support optimal recovery from training including:  Adequate REST and SLEEP Non-strenuous exercise e.g. yoga, Pilates, swimming Massage – relaxing and/or sports massage Stretching and foam rolling (46:18) KEY TAKEAWAYS 1) Recovery is: “….the time period between the end of a bout of exercise and the subsequent return to a resting or recovered state. The time it takes to recover will vary between individuals 2) Positive training adaptations is one of the most important effects obtained through optimal recovery, ultimately leading to enhanced running performance 3) Many symptoms experienced post-exercise (for example: DOMS and fatigue) are a natural part of the recovery process and are, as a result, important contributors to training adaptation, therefore sufficient recovery is required for these reactions to occur and then “reset” 4) There are two recognised approaches to recovery: Active recovery and Passive recovery, both of which would be important to include in a training programme 5) There are many nutritional strategies that have been shown to support optimal recovery from training including: Adequate protein intake Adequate carbohydrate intake  Probiotic supplementation Remember timing of protein and...

The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. We dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. In today's episode, Desiree Lotz joins us to discuss dehydration and rehydration. Desiree is a trained detox specialist and the CEO of Sunshine Vitamins. Desiree shares her knowledge about the products she has created to help people get the nutrients their bodies need to thrive. She also dives deep into the causes of dehydration, the symptoms that people experience when dehydrated, and how to rehydrate in a healthy way. Lastly, she discusses electrolytes and the best way to get the necessary minerals into your system. Tune in to learn the signs you may not have known and what your body needs to be in its healthiest state.  IN THIS EPISODE:●   [4:58] Desiree tells her story of how she was raised and how she got into the hydration and dehydration space and how she started her business. ●   [10:20] Cal Mag benefits & Desiree's experience. ●   [12:50] How to know if you are dehydrated - signs and symptoms.●   [16:45] Common causes of dehydration.●   [20:46] Side effects of dehydration.●   [21:40] Pure saltwater benefits vs white salt.●   [23:30] Confusing thirst for hunger.●   [26:38] Rehydration - Why it's important and the best way to do it.●   [32:00] Understanding what electrolytes are and how we can get them and what types to avoid (Gatorade).●   [35:43] Thoughts on seltzer water / carbonated water.KEY TAKEAWAYS:●  99% of humans are dehydrated and they don't even know it.●  Water does not cure dehydration, the right minerals are necessary to be fully hydrated. Celtic Salt and pure saltwater added to your drinking water are a great way to get the minerals. ●  Our soil is not what it was back in the day, so we have to take extra precautions with the way we get our minerals since animals and plants are no longer soaking them in. ●  There are many side effects of dehydration such as depression and blood sugar. Many people head to the doctors to seek medical help when really they can add more hydration and feel better. Staying well hydrated is important for many reasons, such as helping you feel better, increasing your energy, and helping your body function properly. Water has many roles in the body such as: assisting digestion and normal bowel function, helps deliver oxygen, regulates body temperature, cushions your joints, brain, spinal cord and fetus if you are pregnant, balances body chemicals by assisting with hormone production, and helps your body perform at its best. Many people do not do a good job drinking water throughout the day, hence the plethora of products out there to help you stay hydrated. Electrolyte water is a growing market and in 2021, sales reached over 1.4 billion dollars, with expected growth over the next few years. Welcome to the Cattle Station Classroom Podcast. In today's lesson we are going to be learning about the landscape rehydration method of Waterponding. To learn about waterponding, we are joined by Jardine Macdonald, the Program Manager for Rangelands Natural Resource Management. Jards is a hydrogeologist who comes from an environmental consulting and mining background, and did research on groundwater recharge and catchment water balance dynamics in the Pilbara. Starting with Rangelands early 2019, he took up the project management role for the West Kimberley LCDC Smart Farms grant project ‘Brining soil back to life through waterponding',  funded by the National Landcare Program.  The West Kimberley LCDC setup this project with collaborative support of Mel McDonald (previously Rangelands NRM) and Matt Fletcher (DPIRD), building on both Mel and Matt's waterponding work with guru Ray Thompson and Kimberley stations since 2009. The West Kimberley LCDC, Rangelands NRM and DPIRD collaborated to complete a month of waterponding with the NSW pros Ray Thompson and Ben McKillop, across West Kimberley LCDC stations at the end of 2019.  As part of this project, the West Kimberley LCDC also produced a video on how to build waterponds which was uploaded to Youtube April this year on the Rangelands NRM channel. MEET OUR GUEST: After over twenty years as a ballroom dancer Robert Schwartz took his experience of making difficult things easy and created a clean and easy to use home sprouting system, Organic Sprout Box. Sprouting is taking seeds and introducing the process of germination by adding moisture. Rehydration then takes over and the metabolic processes resume making the seed a powerhouse of nutrition. He personally used sprouts to lower his triglycerides from 295 to 130, the LDL from 176 to 119 and the A1C from 6.2 to 5.1 in a three month period. The environmental benefits are just as stunning. No top soil, fertilizer, or pesticides used. Greatly reduced pollution from packaging, refrigeration and transportation. Almost no food waste as the entire plant is eaten. His biggest hope is that organic sprout box kits will be in urban nutritional wastelands so the populations there can have fresh healthy organic food every day. Subscribe to Pivot! Peter Andrews is one of Australia's landscape geniuses, who has been battling to change the stats quo attitude of government, farmers and land managers to hydrology and restoring landscape function for 40 years. Charlie sat with Peter at his farm in the central Tablelands of NSW while he recounted his formative years of desert life, how that informed his lifelong passion to restore the oldest continent in the world, and highlights that the healing of this land is totally within our reach if we reinstate a few simple principles of land management that had kept this landscape the most productive in the world. Episode Takeaways: There is a predictable natural sequence within the landscape we just have to recreate and nurture it | Peter’s property at Bungonia was bought to be a demonstration site, this region of NSW was a very over exploited area given its location between Sydney and Canberra | Plants are specialists at bringing various components and elements into a landscape | We don’t recreate the old landscape, we recreate the processes and function of the landscape | The landscape evolved due to plants managing water | Frequent fire, flood and drought are symptoms of a dysfunctional landscape | Peter grew up at Broken Hill where his experiences of desert storms and floods started him on his journey to rehydrate the landscape of Australia | Pioneering plants are essential to repair the landscapes | The current agricultural system that replies on the removal of specific plants is costing our farmers businesses and the landscapes health | Peter’s experience with sheep health in those early years identified the importance of nutrition and how a functioning landscape provides a broad range of plants to provide this nutrition | Over-stocked properties and poor understanding of hydrology has caused the degradation of the landscape | Early experiments on the family property at Broken Hill included ripping along the high water mark of food plains | The Australian landscape had a higher percentage of pines and palms than is currently there | We are generally left with fire recovery desert plants, mostly eucalypts | Water much more influential in the atmosphere than carbon | Hot air produced inland from a lack of transpiring vegetation and moving towards, and being absorbed by, the area over the moist ocean creates damaging weather events | Capillary action and gravity are the fundamental phenomena NSF relies upon to work | Fire flood and drought are opportunities to change the pattern and create plant succession | The Peter’s horses performance were results of the management of his land, where a fundamental principle was to let all plants grow | Willows are suckers in the landscape wounds that are creeks and rivers | Peter was able to double the aquatic life in riparian zones in 2 years using willows to heal them | 95mm dew can be accumulated in a year where ground cover is maintained | Restoring deciduous green trees in flow lines reduces fire risk | The eucalypts in the landscape before human management were huge, towering above the canopy and had the role of reducing the escape of moisture from the area | The best management post any fire is to spread seeds of deciduous shrub and tree species | It all gets back to human and environmental health and this is Peter’s motivation. I think there's a big temptation to eat less or not at all; if one has diarrhoea one doesn't feel like eating. But of course it's very important that nutrition is maintained in this state. The body needs to continue to be fed and rehydration solutions, even the prepacked ones in the sachets, do not provide any, or very, very little, in the way of nutrition. Milk is of course quite nutritious. Some will say that it does actually irritate the stomach. I think it depends a lot on what you have to hand, of course; and what the patient can tolerate. If you find that you give milk and that's immediately rejected or the patient is sick, then obviously go back to just your safe rehydration fluids and wait until the patient's condition is a little better. In the latest decade, milk has gone through some rough times. Milk its perhaps experiencing its lowest reputation in the history of mankind. A food that was once praised for its role in children’s growth and as important throughout the life cycle, started its downfall when the Paleo diet came out. Currently, milk still remains quite unpopular in athletes’ perception, irrespective of the solid body of evidence attributing important benefits to its inclusion in the athletes’ diet, particularly in the post workout period after endurance sessions as we will discuss here today Dr. Lewis James who has been giving an important contribution for milk research as a recovery drink in the last years and hopefully we can clarify and increase milk’s reputation, at least among cyclists. After all, we are probably talking about the biggest bang for your buck in terms of sources of high quality protein.

In this interview he powerfully articulates that what we take into our bodies can have a lasting effect and of the necessity and urgency to clean up our act - is an imperative.   The old adage that ‘the greatest pollution we face is that which is between our ears’ - ‘is our thought process’ and that the sooner we recognise our situation, the sooner we will be able to clean up both our inner and outer world. David is touring NZ over the next few months to share with all concerned the latest knowledge on natural ways to regain optimum health and remain that way for the rest of our life. Some important tips and reminders are: Organic food, especially veggies and fruit is exceptionally important. No Fizzy drinks for children. Kamboucha*  Tea is OK. *Sugar is dangerous. Fasting for adults is good for us all. Watermelon juice fast – detox your kidneys as it is alkalising. Rehydration is important as forty year olds and older are seriously dehydrated. 90% of David’s patients are dehydrated. He has machines that test for this . Do not drink chlorinated fluoridated ‘tap water.’ Electronic Devices – don‘t use them before bed. Turn your wifi router off at night before you go to bed. David calls this sleep hygiene. A good 7-8-9 hours every night. Naturopaths in NZ devote 2 years to nutritional knowledge and if you get less than 70% in your exams you have to sit the entire course again. Whilst MD’s in University have only 3 hours on nutrition, if they miss those lecture they do not need to repeat that lecture. Which clearly shows that food and nutrition are not a priority. Have you ever been in any of these situations? ⇒   You have a stable child who just needs fluids, but no laboratory tests ⇒   You’ve tried PO hydration, to no avail, despite anti-emetics ⇒   You’re poking the stable, but dehydrated child repeatedly without success What now? Hypodermoclysis, otherwise known as subcutaneous rehydration. [Insert Player] Clysis comes from the same Greek word that “a flood” – hypodermoclysis refers to flooding the subcutaneous space with fluid, so that it can be absorbed systemically. Sound far-fetched? Well, it turns out, what is old is new again. In 1913, Dr Day first described this technique for a child with severe diarrhea who could not tolerate fluids by mouth. Hypodermoclysis then began to gain popularity with a peak of use in the 1940s, until an innovative breakthrough in 1950. Dr David Massa, a resident anesthesiologist at the Mayo clinic, invented the first catheter-over-needle apparatus. With increasing safety and ready access of IV catheters, IV quickly overshadowed SC. The subcutaneous route of hydration has also been used effectively in geriatric and palliative care for decades, and it is only now beginning to gain popularity again in its original population: children. So, how does it work? In a nutshell, you place a butterfly needle or angiocatheter in the subcutaneous space and you run fluids into it. The tissues quickly absorb the fluids, making them available systemically. That’s it. Everything else is just finesse. The ideal candidate for hypodermoclysis is the stable patient, with mild to moderate dehydration who fails a trial of fluids by mouth, or who needs a bridge to gaining IV access later, after a slow subcutaneous fluid bolus is given. Ok, so how do you do it? Place a topical anesthetic cream, such as EMLA, cover with occlusive dressing (IV dressing), wait 15-20 min "Pinch an inch" of skin anywhere, but the most practical site in young children is between the scapulae Insert a 25-gauge butterfly needle or 24-gauge angiocatheter (preferred by the author), secure Inject 150 U hyaluronidase SC, if available Infuse 20 mL/kg isotonic solution over one hour, repeat as needed or use "bolus" as bridge to IV access You can set the line to gravity, and if it is dripping in, you may leave it be. If you see a very slow drip by gravity, or worse, nothing is dripping, you can set the line on a pump, to deliver up to 20 mL/kg over an hour. Infusion at this rate optimizes the balance we want in minimal discomfort while maximizing the flow rate. This is not a “bolus” in the true sense – but then, when you compare it to the alternative – like IV therapy – and we see a time and cost savings.  Dr Mace and colleagues in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine report substantially decreased cost and ED length of stay when comparing the material and human resources needed to place an IV in a squirmy young child, compared with a simple subcutaneous stick. There will be swelling There will be swelling – that is the goal. It is really painless, and your patient may lie down on his back with the pump going – it is actually pretty comfortable for most children and adults to do. Here’s a tip – since there will be swelling, we want to be careful about how we secure the line, so how you tape it down to the skin is important – we want to avoid a pulling sensation, which can be the beginning of the end of the tolerance for the procedure.  Cover that with an occlusive dressing, as you would an IV site. The footprint of the occlusive dressing is relatively small, so it will travel up on top of the subcutaneous mound you’re creating. As the line exits the occlusive patch, place a thin layer of gauze between the skin and the IV tubing, so that the tubing doesn’t press into the skin. Then—as far away from the puncture site as possible—tape it down securely. The idea is not to tape on the growing mound itself, because the mound may pull at the anchored skin and set a nuclear chain reaction of annoyance and restlessness – and potentially a failed procedure. The swelling will look indurated, a pinkish red.  It’s not an allergic reaction: even with the old preparations of hyaluronidase, allergic reactions were rare, and now they are very rare with the recombinant preparation. It is supposed to swell and look ugly. The subcutaneous tissues will swell to a point where you have a steady state fluid administration rate, and as soon as you stop the infusion, the remaining fluid will start to subside as it is absorbed. A Bridge to IV Therapy? Kuensting et al. in the Journal of Emergency Nursing in 2013 compared subcutaneous fluid infusion with intravenous fluid infusion in children with difficult IV access. They found the mean time from order entry to subcutaneous fluid infusion to be 20 min, compared to the failed IV access group with an average infusion start time of 1.5 hours. The latter group eventually received subcutaneous fluids.  The investigators also found a shorter ED length of stay in the subcutaneous group. In the same study, a subgroup received subcutaneous fluids initially, and later an IV. They found a trend in ease of IV access after subcutaneous fluid therapy. In other words, if your little patient with difficult IV access is hemodynamically stable and amenable to a bolus over an hour, you may choose to start with hypodermoclysis and reevaluate. Predicting Difficult IV Access in Children Much has been studied and written about the predictors of difficult IV access in children. The most often cited are: age < 3 years, weight less than 5 kg, prematurity, obesity, and darker skin tones, where the contrast of vein to skin may not be so apparent. The three main predictors of the score validated by Riker et al. in Annals of Emergency Medicine include the most practical and universal of features: vein palpability, vein visibility, and patient age. If you’re anticipating difficult IV access in the child who can stand to wait an hour for a slow bolus, you may start with the subcutaneous route to get those veins plumper and more visible, to improve your chances of IV access in the very near future. Medications via Subcutaneous Route Certain medications have been used safely via subcutaneous infusion; always check dose, rate, and compatibility.   What about catheter size? You don’t need to use larger needles or angiocathters for older children, adolescents or adults. A 25-gauge butterfly or 24-gauge angiocatheter works well from an infant to an elder. In one study of adults, a half a liter of saline was infused by gravity via a 24-gauge catheter. With IVs, the shorter and larger the bore, the faster the infusion. In subcutaneous infusion, it is not the size of the catheter, but the osmotic gradient that determines the rate of absorption. What if I don't have that fancy hyaluronidase? It’s actually increasingly readily found – and available in generic form. If you have it, please use it – it will make a believer out of you and others. Hypodermoclysis will work without hyaluronidase – the process of subcutaneous rehydration just takes a lot longer to work. In a double-blind cross-over trial Thomas et al. in 2007 compared subcutaneous administration of lactated ringer’s solution by gravity with and without hyalurondase. The hyaluronidase group received their fluids 5 times faster. The average rate of the hyaluronidase group was 382 mL/h versus the fluid only group, who did not receive hyalurinodase; they were substantially slower, at 82 mL/h. It’s worth using if you have it, but still potentially useful if you don’t. Recap: Supplies √    EMLA or any topical anesthetic used for intact skin, placed as soon as the decision is made √    A 25-gauge butterfly needle or 24-gauge angiocatheter √    IV tubing, gauze to pad, tape to anchor √    150 U hyaluronidase, the same dose, regardless of age or size √    Isotonic fluids – you can start with 20 ml/kg √    And finally a well informed team made up by the patient, the parents, and your staff, so that everyone knows what to expect for a successful subcutaneous fluid administration. In this rousing tour-de-force, ecologist Brock Dolman reveals Planet Earth as Watershed Earth. He illustrates how the future lifeboat we’ll need is shaped exactly like our local watershed. All living things are inextricably linked by water and designed around its flow. With lessons from across the globe, he calls for a “rehydration revolution” – water systems based on good science, respect, and widespread community participation. He spins dazzling poetics to show how water-literate human settlement patterns can regenerate ecological integrity and social resiliency to prepare for the climate changes ahead. It’s a mesmerizing performance that gets a standing ovation. This speech was given at the 2009 Bioneers National Conference. Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges. To experience talks like this, please join us at the Bioneers National Conference each October, and regional Bioneers Resilient Community Network gatherings held nationwide throughout the year.
