Red Bull gives you wings, as the marketing strapline goes. Certainly, Red Bull has had the ability to give wings to several non-descript football clubs you might never have heard of: from the MetroStars to Austria Salzburg and SSV Markranstadt. But have they given football the wings to fly away from tradition and community that it was founded on, to create something rotten to the core? 00:00 – Intro 00:30 – Salzburg 03:10 – New York 06:50 – Leipzig 11:05 – Rangnick 19:25 – Legacy Learn more about your ad choices. From 'DA's New York Accent' (Subscribe Here), Ryan Meara is not only a Red Bulls institution, he's also a native New Yorker. The Yonkers native grew up a tortured Mets fan during the Yankees dynasty, and loved Tony Meola of the MetroStars before there even was a Red Bulls. On "New York Accent" he discusses his family lineage of FDNY and how 9/11 affected them all. He also talks about trying to finally deliver an MLS Cup to a fan base he grew up being part of. A Fordham alum, Meara has thoughts on the best New York slice of pizza and where to go on Arthur Ave; Meara knows what it takes to compete in New York, although it sounds like his teammates might at times be overwhelmed by the city. For the first time, we welcome a New York native and a current New York athlete onto the podcast. Perry Mitris is undoubtedly the household name local Limestone Coast football observers are looking forward to watching their team, Naracoorte United, come up against in Saturday afternoon's Australia Cup qualifying round. Mitris is a highly accomplished Adelaide-based player, who most recently made local headlines for following in his father's footsteps in representing the historic South Australian club with Cypriot roots, Adelaide Cobras FC after a storied career. Mitris was a standout player for West Adelaide FC in 2015, helping the former NSL giant capture the National Premier Leagues SA title with his goal scoring prowess. In 2014, he was a key cog in the Metrostars machine which went on to win the Australian National Premier Leagues football competition, while in 2010, Mitris was one of Adelaide United's standout young talents and was offered a place in the club's 2009/10 Asian Champions League roster. Mitris is one of the numerous Cobras stars who will grace the football pitch at the Naracoorte and District Sports Centre, affording Naracoorte's humble squad members the opportunity to test themselves against some of the state's top talents. Despite many viewing the clash as a 'David vs. Goliath' type affair, Mitris told the Flow Friday Sports Show that his teammates were equally as excited as their counterparts to match it with one of regional South Australia's unknown quantities. One of the other reasons as to why Mitris and the Adelaide Cobras squad are so eager to touch down on the Limestone Coast has to do with the rare prospect of the side being able to travel together with the Cobras' travel itinerary including a one-night stay in Naracoorte. Cobras fans will be treated to an intriguing competitive hit-out with their season set to officially kick-off at home to the Adelaide Blue Eagles next weekend.
Part Two, Scott Tunbridge reveals his experience during the Championship winning season at Newcastle Jets in the A-League, from how he was treated, his regrets and despite the tough year personally, he shares how he celebrated the win with his teammates. No calls were made from Adelaide United for a call up, but a family situation made for an easy decision to return home playing for MetroStars in the NPL. Scotts memories of his time at Metro are positive, describing what it was like to share the limelight on the national stage with his local club.

The Athletic Major League Soccer staff writer Pablo Maurer steps into our vortex of what-used-to-be in professional sports this week, with a look back at some of the more confounding and overlooked stories of the not-so-distant past of US pro soccer. It's our deepest dives yet into memorable North American Soccer League gems like 1977's one-year wonder Team Hawaii; 1983's divisive US Men's National Team-as-pro-franchise Team America; the curious Stateside detours of world greats like Bayern Munich superstar Gerd Müeller, Dutch legend Johan Cruyff and Manchester United icon George Best - plus, of course, the NASL's inventive ahead-of-its-time 35-yard-line Shootout tie-breaker. We also tackle some of the already forgotten early days of Major League Soccer - including its own version of the Shootout; LA's ill-fated "first" second franchise Chivas USA; and impossible-to-forget franchise monikers like Wiz, Burn, Clash, and MetroStars. PLUS: the unheralded pre-MLS rules experiments of the mid-90s USISL minor league pyramid. AND: the incomparable (if not incomprehensible) Socker Slam!

Hello soccer fans! And welcome back to the Sons of a Pitch: An American Soccer Podcast. In tonight's abridged episode, Nick cover's the latest roster moves by the Chicago Fire and reflects on Tim Howard's career in the wake of his announcing his retirement after the 2019 MLS season. In Chicago, the Fire front office have announced the signing of Polish attacker Przemyslaw Frankowski to a four year contract. This pacy winger is sure to add another option to the Fire's attacked, and should link up well with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Aleksandar Katai. Most intriguing is that he will be signed with TAM, leaving the Fire with their 3rd and final Designated Player (DP) spot unfilled. Could another big signing be in the works? Frankowski's signing is welcome new for an offense that loses Marco Urena, who the Fire acquired from LAFC in the Waiver Draft. Urena has opted to return to Costa Rica to play for Alajuelense, the club where he made his professional debut. It's too bad he never became that goal-scoring sensation that San Jose, LAFC, and Chicago hoped he would be. In other news, Tim Howard, American soccer legend and the "Secretary of Defense", announced he will be retiring after the 2019 season with the Colorado Rapids. His professional career will span 20 years, including playing for clubs such as the MetroStars, Manchester United, Everton, the Rapids, and of course the USMNT. The only question remains is: Where does Howard fall in the all-time list of American soccer greats? What are your thoughts on the Chicago Fire roster? What was your favorite Tim Howard moment? Let us know in the comments below, and continue the conversation on twitter @SOPSoccer. Thanks for listening, and stay tuned for a full episode recording later this week!

Eric and Zeff head to a MLS soccer game at DC United new stadium, Audi Field. And while Zeff was looking to keep up with his Red Bulls and Metrostars (no, that's "code" for anything), Eric has been burrowing down a YouTube rabbit-hole, endlessly watching videos of people coming out of anesthesia. That's not code for anything either, but when we explain, you'll surely be familiar with those videos of kids recovering after being knocked out at the dentist....
D.C. United keeps the hot streak going, and Filibuster is riding that wave too. Adam, Ben, and Jason are here to talk about D.C. United's 2-0 win over the New England Revolution, and we start the program by talking about the historic commentary crew. We then get into the game itself, talking about D.C. United's offense and how they are able to keep the pressure up without getting many cards, especially in the case of Luciano Acosta. We also discuss how the central midfield partnership of Junior Moreno and Russell Canouse has freed the fullbacks from a lot of defensive responsibilities, the play that sprung Luciano Acosta for the first goal, and whether or not this streak means less since it has been mostly against bad teams. In the second segment we bring on evil Jason Iapicco from Red Bull Rant to talk about the New York Red Bulls. We discuss how big this rivarly is now that the Red Bulls have a local competitor, their signings in the summer window, and what Tyler Adams has meant to the team. We also discuss the amount of money paid out for Kaku and how this team fits into the global Red Bull machine, before ending the segment talking about the departure of Jesse Marsch and asking Jason to gameplan the MetroStars for us. Give it a listen!

On this edition of the Red Bulls Insider Podcast, I’m joined by US Soccer Hall of Famer and former MetroStars and Red Bulls goalkeeper Tony Meola! Tony knows all about being a major part of USA soccer, and he shares his thoughts on the state of the Men’s National Team and why Bruce Arena is the right man to be at the helm. We also get into the Red Bulls, touching on Tyler Adams’ progression and whether he’ll be heading over to Europe, as well as the club’s new 3-6-1 formation. And there’s still more, as we reminisce about Meola playing with the MetroStars in MLS’ inaugural season, discuss how to cultivate young American talent in MLS and where former Red Bull Matt Miazga might end up in the fall. But before I chat it up with the three-time World Cup keeper, I share my thoughts on the Red Bulls’ much-improved play as of late, their back-to-back dominating wins and whether they’ve turned the corner on the season.
