Two Circles is predicting the global sports fanbase will grow from 3.2billion to 4billion by 2033. But below that bullish headline, there's some nuance. For example, two thirds of consumption comes from just 20% of the most dedicated fans. So there's a race on to get at that remaining 80% of casual fans, who make up the famous long tail. But how? Today, we're launching a brand new show called Expected Goals, hosted by Matt Cutler and Maggie Murphy. Together Matt and Maggie will explore the business of women's football. Matt Cutler is the former editor of SportBusiness and was Director of Communications at Two Circles. As the head of Unofficial Partner Productions, Matt led on our hit series, The Pirates Versus The Premier League and the more recent Last Orders, on football's relationship with the pub. So he's the perfect person to be running the show alongside Maggie Murphy. Maggie was formally chief executive officer of Lewes Football Club and has been one of the most outspoken and most interesting contributors to the debate on the evolution of professional women's football over the last five years or more. She was a board member of the FA Women's Super League and Women's Championship Board, as an elected club representative onto that body. Before that she was director of public policy and sport integrity for the Sport Integrity Global Alliance and senior global advocacy manager at Transparency International. So we're in good hands. Expected Goals will sit outside of the usual Unofficial Partner channels. You'll find it on the Sport Social Network and in all the usual places, including Apple, Spotify and your favourite podcast app. Just search 'Expected Goals'. If you'd like to contribute questions and queries to the show, get in touch. You can email Matt at Matt@UnofficialPartner.co.uk. So listen to this setup episode and then tune in every Wednesday. Leaders' Editorial Director James Emmett and Content Director David Cushnan slip back into the studio to consider the stories of the sports industry week.As Whisper secures a big contract for host broadcast services at Roland Garros, they reflect on the changes, creativity and innovation in the sports production market - and, as Lionel Messi launches his own studio, when athletes and influencers might join the contest for big live production work. Then David plays in a couple of conversations from last week's Two Circles EMEA Client Summit in London. The agency's Co-Founder and CEO Gareth Balch sets the scene, then Arsenal's Chief Commercial Officer Juliet Slot, Two Circles' Managing Director of Ventures Annie Panter and Zarah Al-Kudcy, who has just started as Chief Revenue Officer at WPLL, the new entity operating the Women's Super League and Women's Championship on England, sit down to discuss how to scale women's football. They explain how fan insights are impacting the stadium experience, getting ticketing strategies and pricing right (and wrong), how to carefully read the new wave of data being collected and how it's informing approaches to marketing the women's game.
Other People's Money is our regular series on sports investment, with regular co-host Matt Rogan, co-founder of Two Circles. Our guests today are Jonathan Lenson and Sam Johnson, CEO and head of sport respectively at Milltown Partners, the communications and public policy consultancy co-founded by Paddy Harverson, the former PR to Manchester United and King Charles, among others. The conversation is prompted by some focus group work carried out by Milltown in to the reputational challenges that surround football's relationship with private investors, particulary from the US. It was Gary Neville of Sky Sports fame who called investors from North America 'a clear and present danger to the pyramid and fabric of the game'.Was he right? How many football fans share that view? How does the reputation of American money compare to other sources of investment from for example, Arab countries, such as Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, or even Hollywood stars like Ryan Reynolds? This gets us to other, deeper questions as to the cliches and tropes that attach themselves to sport's relationship with private investment of all types. This episode of Unofficial Partner is sponsored by We Are Sweet, helping you tell compelling stories in-the-moment, as they happen, from the heart of the action. This is the second episode of Other People's Money, our regular deep dive in to the world sports investment, with my regular co-host Matt Rogan, one of the co-founders of Two Circles and a serial adviser to sports organisations. Today the conversation is about private equity. We went to the Victoria offices of Phoenix Capital to talk to Tim Dunn, a partner in the firm. Tim and the company have no interest in sports as an asset class and that's why we wanted his opinion. It's an opportunity to look through the eyes of a private equity expert whose view is not coloured by skin in the game. So we talk about how they value businesses, what they look for in management teams, the red flags that can wreck an investment and the question of what happens at the end of the relationship?Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. What does sport look like from the money side of the equation? What's the investment rationale behind buying a football team, cricket franchise, the new sports tech thing or a sports agency? What are assumptions about how the market will develop? Who's going to win, who will lose out? These are just a few of the questions we're looking to explore in this series, with my co-host Matt Rogan, co-founder of Two Circles, C-suite consultant and someone who's sat on either side of the sport and money divide. 00:29 The Concept of 'Other People's Money' in Sports01:11 Investor Decision Making and Sports Business02:32 Seeking New Perspectives 03:36 Due Diligence and Investment Strategies05:48 Challenges and Opportunities in Sports Investments08:27 The Real Role of Private Equity 13:40 Beyond Broadcasting and Media Rights 18:03 Minority Partnerships, Jim Ratcliffe and Women's Sports21:07 Ethical and Philosophical Questions - the Saudi question35:53 Global Investment Trends 40:34 Beyond the sports biz bubbleUnofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. With a low barrier to entry, everyone fancies themselves a learning designer. How hard can it be? In this episode, Greg Arthur shares his approach to creating engaging and impactful learning experiences, honed over his years of working in L&D teams at highly successful, world-renowned companies. KEY TAKEAWAYS Because you are dealing with people, every business is different, even those operating in the same industry. Ask the 2 basic questions to cut through the noise – What is happening right now? How do you want to change it? Understand who you are talking to and why they will care and listen to you. Ask yourself if I were to put this out a real-life product, would I buy it? The medium you use to provide the learning must be right for the person. Make sure you do the work upfront and solve the problem, even if it takes a little longer. Try different things while the problem is small. BEST MOMENTS 'Some teams, learning teams, regardless of industry are just better than others.' 'You don´t move ahead until you are ready to move ahead. You don´t bring in the wrong people at the wrong time.' 'Basically, it´s like Lego for learning design.' 'This is changing a whole department's attitude to learning design.' Greg Arthur Bio Greg Arthur is a learning professional with experience of designing learning and leading teams at blue-chip brands such as BP, ASOS, HSBC and Philip Morris. Greg has devised the Learning Experience Design Log Book, and his own design studio (Two Circles) that catalogues his approach and guides followers to develop impactful and engaging learning experiences themselves. George Pyne's Bruin Capital recently sold its stake in the Two Circles marketing agency at an internal rate of return of more than 60%. That deal was just the latest exit to turn a profit for Bruin in recent years, with the respective sales of On Location to Endeavor and Deltatre to Bain Capital also generating big payouts. Here, Pyne, the founder and CEO of Bruin, talks to SportsPro CEO Nick Meacham about how the firm has struck gold with its investments in the sports industry.
As Everton (again) and Nottingham Forest become the latest Premier League clubs to fall foul of the Premier League's financial rules, George Breare, Tom Bassam and Josh Sim discuss that story, plus a potentially huge NFL-ESPN deal. Then Two Circles CEO Gareth Balch joins the show to talk about the Charterhouse move. Talking points: What's the story with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules? (1:04) Are the rules protecting clubs at the top? (7:28) The NFL-ESPN deal (18:03) Two Circles acquired by Charterhouse (29:49) Josh Sim interviews Two Circles CEO Gareth Balch (32:06)
The big news in the sports industry is the sale of Two Circles, the sports marketing group co-founded and led by today's guest Gareth Balch. The deal values the company at £250 million (US$317.9 million), representing a big payout for George Pyne's Bruin Sports Capital, which paid $40million for 80% of the company in December 2019, when it bought it from previous owner WPP. So why is the company that amount of money and what does it tell us about how the finance community values professional sport over the next decade? Two Circles new home is private equity firm Charterhouse Capital Partners, whose partner Chris Warren, was quoted as saying: “We believe Two Circles is emerging as the first digitally native global sports group and will lead the next era for the sports industry to help its clients navigate the changes ahead and fulfil their potential.”Two Circles has long-term partnerships with some of the most iconic sports properties in the world including the NFL, the IOC, International Cricket Council, LA28, F1, Premier League, UEFA and FIFA. It diversified its services during the Bruin ownership period through the acquisition of premium sponsorship sales agency, TRM, ticketing specialists, SportsInk, technology specialists, Codeware, and the award-winning creative content agency, LiveWire Sport. Two Circles was also able to invest in joint-ventures with the DP World Tour, Ryder Cup Europe, FIBA and the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to help accelerate the commercial growth of their properties. The third episode in our Project 2030 Series, made in collaboration with Two Circles that models the next decade in the sports marketplace. The idea is to test some of the assumptions about where sport goes from here. What type of sports property will be rewarded by the marketplace, and which ones will be punished? They've modelled the size of the market - everything, media rights, sponsorship, merch, tickets. That number is £220billion in 2032, a rise of 50% in a decade. So, our podcast series is asking how that growth will be distributed across sport, and what are the implications for people in different parts of the industry. This episode questions how sports related content will evolve, and the role it will play in driving commercial returns, both for rights holders and broadcasters. This is the second episode of our series made in collaboration with Two Circles, where we model the market for sport over the next decade.Today we analyse the role of the athlete, and to help us we're delighted to welcome Jazz Sawyers, British track and field athlete, two time Olympian, five time national champion who recently won gold in the Long Jump at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, where she broke the British record by breaking the 7 metre barrier for the first time.Off the track, Sawyers has developed a sports presenting career, competed in The Voice on BBC and also found time to study for a law degree. Joining Jazz are Leo Thompson and Christian Harrell-Baker from Two Circles. Together we ask what will the market for sport reward over the next decade, and what will it punish, who will win and who will lose? Jazz Sawyers is managed independently by Jon Kilmartin, Director of Media Strategy and Insights at Two Circles, and we thank him for his help in setting up the podcast. Two Circles co-founder Gareth Balch and his entrepreneurial journey.Welcome to Founders Keepers, the podcast series about entrepreneurship and business building from the Leaders Sport Business podcast. Two Circle co-founder Gareth Balch is the featured guest on this episode. Balch represented Great Britain as an 800 metre runner before moving into the world of sports business, first with Goodform, and then in the commercial strategy team at Manchester City. In 2011, at the age of 28, Balch founded Two Circles alongside Matt and Claire Rogan.Conceived as a digital agency focused on helping sports rights holders develop direct relationships with fans, Two Circles' marketing mandate matched its business plan perfectly, and it very quickly established itself as the data driven agency in sport. It's gone on to hoover up business across the UK and Europe – and latterly in the US and internationally too – and is a serial winner of the Agency of the Year gong at the Sport Industry Awards.Since inception, Two Circles has generated annual revenue and profit growth of 54% and 42% per year on average. It was also named as one of the fastest growing companies in The Sunday Times 100 for two years in a row, and its global footprint has expanded to 500 ‘Two Circlers' across six cities. Two Circles was acquired first by WPP in 2015; and then by Bruin Sports Capital – which took a majority stake for $42m in December 2019 - and since then has made four significant acquisitions to strengthen its rights and sponsorship sales, and marketing offerings: sports rights-sales agency TRM Partners, ticket strategy and sales company Sports Ink, award-winning sports content agency LiveWire Sport, and the Australian digital transformation company Codeware, in a deal that was announced just days before this interview took place in January this year.Leaders Week London, our flagship in person event experience, is returning on the 16th-19th October. To find out more about how you can connect with those at the heart of the global sports industry, visit https://leadersinsport.com/leadersweek.

What is the state of Rugby League today? Who has the commercial and political power in the game and what impact will this year's Rugby League World Cup have in the game's major heartlands of the UK and Australia. These are just a few of the questions I put to today's guest, Jamie Peacock MBE, who brings a lifetime of insight and expertise to the conversation, courtesy of being the most successful Rugby League player in Super League history, winning nine championships and four Challenge Cup winners medals for Bradford Bulls and Leeds Rhinos, during a career that saw him captain both England and Great Britain national teams.Since retiring from the game, Peacock has built a consultancy business focused on leadership mentoring and wellbeing, a subject very close to his heart, as Jamie will be running a 100 mile ultra marathon for Greenhouse Sports on Saturday 16th April. The most eye catching deal of this week was the announcement that Spotify, the music streaming company is buying almost the entire sponsorship inventory of FC Barcelona, including the shirt of the men's and women's teams, the training kit and a title partnership of the famous Camp Nou stadium. To get to what's really happening here, we've brought together Tom Gray, Joel Seymour Hyde and Matt Rogan.Tom Gray is a founding member of Mercury Prize winning band Gomez and a board director of PRS For Music. Tom leads a social media-driven campaign, #BrokenRecord which calls for more of the streaming revenue ‘pie' to make its way to artists and songwriters. His submission to the parliamentary select committee is referenced in the conversation and is available to read here. Joel Seymour Hyde is Managing Director for Octagon UK, the sport and entertainment agency with offices in 22 countries around the world including FRUKT which has particular expertise across music, entertainment and esports.Matt Rogan was a co-founder and former CEO of the Two Circles agency, and is now Non Executive Director and Senior Advisor in Sport. New book, 'All to Play For' was published in July 2021. As you'll hear us reference, we recorded Matt's contribution from a car park outside Wembley Stadium, so there's a bit of road noise in the background.
