This week, Dr. Drew talks to Navarone Garcia and Michael DeLeon about their mission to educate the youth on addiction. Navarone, a musician and the son of Priscilla Presley, shares his experiences growing up in a famous family, his battle with fentanyl addiction, and his journey to rehab and recovery. Michael, the founder of Steered Straight Inc., the leading drug prevention program in America, discusses how addiction is affecting the new generation and the serious consequences of vaping on Gen Z.
Michael R. DeLeon, a successfully acclimated ex-offender who after nearly 8 years of drug addiction and gang involvement, spent 12 years in state prison and half-way houses for a gang-related homicide. Michael plead guilty in a very emotional and complicated case involving the murder of his own Mother by people tasked to kill him. Since Michael's release from prison, he has earned 3 Associates Degrees, a Baccalaureate Degree in Business Management, with a minor in Criminal Justice and a CADC Educational Certificate. Michael is now in the process of obtaining his Tobacco specialist certification from the University of Kentucky School of Nursing, his Masters Degree in Social Work at Liberty University School of Social Work as well as pursuing his LCADC. Michael DeLeon is on a mission: A mission to educate the youth to stay on the right path when it comes to serious life issues, especially drugs. He has become the #1 booked school presenter in the country. Michael is the founder and powerhouse behind Steered Straight Inc., a non-profit organization formed in 2007 upon his release from prison and designed to carry an important message to youth on the extreme dangers of drugs, gang involvement and associated criminal activity. Steered Straight's program reaches out to children, teens and young adults with a message of reality about life-choices and the importance of consequential thinking so that they understand that there are consequences to their actions. The reality of the message comes from Michael himself, who was entwined in the life of drugs and traveled a troubling road to get to his future. Throughout the country, Michael now leads a team of talented speakers who present a realistic and powerful prevention message. His “no holds back” message resonates well with student assemblies, faculty and parents. Stay In Your Lane Media, the media arm of Steered Straight, was founded by Michael in 2012, and has produced four award winning documentaries, Kids Are Dying, An American Epidemic, Marijuana X and Road to Recovery. His fifth documentary, “Higher Power is currently in post-production. Michael has also produced multiple public service announcements, as well as educational and instructional videos on prevention and Recovery Michael founded a project of Steered Straight, Inc., called “The Recovery Army”. Recovery Army's mission is to recruit everyone to wage war on this pandemic of addiction. He tours the country in a Recovery Army Tour bus, visiting communities with educational resources, films and books. He visits schools, prisons, jails, treatment centers, Churches and community organizations addressing each group with catered messages and presentations. He captures stories of Hope and Recovery and has produced over one hundred video stories on the Recovery Army Website. Every state in America has experienced Michael DeLeon – one of the most passionate prevention speakers you will ever encounter. He is a member of many associations, committees and boards, but more importantly, he will take the time to answer questions from any youth and talk with anyone in his audience. Why? As Michael says, “I don't want to just affect one kid; I want to affect them all.” HELP SUPPORT OUR FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION. Navarone Garcia is Priscilla Presley's son. Navarone Garibaldi Garcia (born March 1, 1987) is an American musician who serves as the lead singer of Them Guns. Them Guns is a Los Angeles-based rock band made up of members Garcia (guitar/lead vocals), Kyle Hamood (lead guitar/vocals/keys), Bobby Vega (drums), and Chuck Holiday (bass). Santa Cruz Waves described their sound as "...a rock base, a tinge of surf/ska vocals, and funked out keys, a sound to satisfy the traditional, to alternative, to psychedelic rock music enthusiasts...birthed from the barrels of Them Guns". Navarone Garcia was raised in LA. He was introduced to drugs and started using at a pretty young age. He became addicted to fentanyl in 2016. After getting clean in 2020 and a few relapses in 2022, he is now clean and sober for real. He is now traveling with Michael Deleon from Steered Straight. He is talking to kids mainly about the danger of fentanyl and helping to raise fentanyl/vaping awareness. The main point he wants to get across is that there is fentanyl in everything and it doesn't seem to be an accident. It's not like one dealer put fentanyl in their batch and it started killing everybody.. and all the other dealers said GREAT IDEA. It seems planned. And the growing vape industry is very misleading, making people think it is safer than smoking, or a way to quit smoking. https://steeredstraight.org HELP SUPPORT OUR FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION. All the most well-known thought leaders are publishing their own book today.Having your own book is becoming an almost non-negotiable if you want to be considered as a top thought leader in your industry. In the same way pretty much all entrepreneurs and innovators were forced to get on twitter when it came out, and then instagram, and of course to have their own website, books are coming back as a potentially HUGE avenue to break through the now over-saturated cluttered online ecosystem by giving your audience something they can hold in their hand. A book is also a value-adding, evergreen asset that you can use in more than one way. You can use it top of funnel to attract new audiences and prove why anyone should listen to you. You can use it with existing clientele to actually create better, more informed customers. You can use it to parlay into speaking gigs. You can use it to begin to cement your legacy. More and more leaders, coaches and entrepreneurs are realizing the immense untapped potential that having their own book can have when it comes to generating trust and building credibility and I believe having your own book is quickly becoming an non-negotiable piece of the personal branding revolution. I brought in Michael Delon who runs Paperback Expert, an agency that helps business owners publish a book that positions them as the expert in their field. We get into why becoming a published author matters, how his process works in terms of extracting insights from the author to point them in the best way, plus the typical cost of hiring an agency to write your book for you. Catholic Greg Bourke's profoundly moving memoir about growing up gay and overcoming discrimination in the battle for same-sex marriage in the US. In this compelling and deeply affecting memoir, Greg Bourke recounts growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, and living as a gay Catholic. Gay, Catholic, and American: My Legal Battle for Marriage Equality and Inclusion (U Notre Dame Press, 2021) describes Bourke's early struggles for acceptance as an out gay man living in the South during the 1980s and '90s, his unplanned transformation into an outspoken gay rights activist after being dismissed as a troop leader from the Boy Scouts of America in 2012, and his historic role as one of the named defendants in the landmark United States Supreme Court decision Obergefell vs. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in 2015. After being ousted by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), former Scoutmaster Bourke became a leader in the movement to amend antigay BSA membership policies. The Archdiocese of Louisville, because of its vigorous opposition to marriage equality, blocked Bourke's return to leadership despite his impeccable long-term record as a distinguished boy scout leader. But while making their home in Louisville, Bourke and his husband Michael DeLeon have been active members at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church for more than three decades, and their family includes two adopted children who attended Lourdes school and were brought up in the faith. Over many years and challenges, this couple has managed to navigate the choppy waters of being openly gay while integrating into the fabric of their parish life community. Bourke is unapologetically Catholic, and his faith provides the framework for this inspiring story of how the Bourke DeLeon family struggled to overcome antigay discrimination by both the BSA and the Catholic Church and fought to legalize same-sex marriage across the country. Gay, Catholic, and American is an illuminating account that anyone, no matter their ideological orientation, can read for insight. It will appeal to those interested in civil rights, Catholic social justice, and LGBTQ inclusion. Author: Greg Bourke has had a long corporate career in information technology and management. He currently works as a health economist. Bourke and his husband, Michael De Leon, were named 2015 Persons of the Year by the National Catholic Reporter and have been active in establishing LGBTQ alumni networks at the University of Notre Dame, University of Louisville, University of Kentucky, and other organizations. John Marszalek III is author of Coming Out of the Magnolia Closet: Same-Sex Couples in Mississippi (2020, University Press of Mississippi). A few weeks ago we interviewed Michael DeLeon. Michael is a former addict, former felon and since leaving prison for the last time he has dedicated his life to educating youth and inmates about drugs and the consequences. His story is one of the most harrowing stories we've featured on the podcast. He happened to be in Florida so we invited him into the studio to update us on what he's been up to. Once again, the holidays are upon us. If you know of someone who needs help, do it now. Do something now. Don't wait until after the holidays.
Make sure you are sitting down and are prepared for an emotional roller coaster ride with Micheal DeLeon's story. The story of addiction and crime and redemption doesn't get any more astounding than this. Pot, heroin, cocaine, opioids, prison, gangs, rehab, it's all here. And here is a man who has not only turned his own life around but who is using his experience to change the lives of thousands of children in 47 states in the U.S.

Yes, it is that time of year again. The second annual Podcamp (or Podcast unconference) will be held in San Antonio, Texas, on May 3, 2008. We will represent this podcast series in style. Not only will our presence be known, as we will deliver 2 presentations about the current phenomenon of New Media (podcasting), but we will also promote the podcast series in addition to the recent launch of two other podcast shows. The presentations will be (1) HOW TO AVOID BURNOUT AND PREVENT PODFADING; and (2) How to take your podcast from hobby or Corporate podcast to profitable podcast. We will use examples from the recent launch of the 2 podcast series, the Struggling Entrepreneur (at www.strugglingentrepreneur.com) and Gain Control of Your Day (at www.gaincontrolofyourday.com). The Podcamp San Antonio is an UN-CONFERENCE--that is, an unstructured event where anyone can present and participate--from the novice who is there for education, to the veteran podcaster who si there to take the podcast to the next level. Last year, we had the pleasure of the company of Gary Leland, Mr. P. Dilly, who is also known as the Podcast Pickle, since he has a podcast directory known as the PICKLE. The best part of the Podcamp event is that it is FREE -- a no charge event that helps the podcasting community bond and grow.
