Recorded at the most recent ACTC conference, this episode features Michael McShane—educator, writer, and Shakespearean interlocutor—in a wide-ranging discussion of King Lear with both Greg and Alex. The group examine the play's structural and philosophical dimensions, from the politics of authority and the aesthetics of suffering to questions of justice, recognition, and the limits of language. McShane brings a scholarly yet accessible lens to one of Shakespeare's most harrowing tragedies. Plus: the guys turn it over to the crowd and field a range of questions from the audience!

Nowadays, America's Culkinheads are all Kieran this, Kieran that. But back in 1994, we were still living in the Macaulay Epoch—though not for much longer, with that year's film adaptation of Richie Rich serving as the final childhood role for the darling young movie star. Nowadays you've probably only heard of this for the scene where Richie has a private McDonalds in his mansion, but fear not, as we're here to go long and deep on this "what if a kid had money" genre picture.

Full text: Nationwide polling this year revealed seventy-one percent of voters say parents should “have the right to use tax dollars designated for their child's education to send their child to the public or private school which best serves their needs.” State policymakers should note it's increasingly important to families to match their children's educational needs with school environments that serve them best. Oregon should expand students' education options, and many ways exist to achieve that successfully. In a December article in Forbes, Michael McShane, Director of National Research at Ed Choice, explains why 2023 should be called “The Year of Universal School Choice”: "Policymakers in 40 states debated 111 educational choice bills….As the months ticked by, a total of seven states enacted new choice programs and 10 expanded ones already in operation….[E]ight states have joined Arizona and West Virginia in offering all students choice, making 2023 the Year of Universal Choice….[A]pproximately 20 million students—or 36 percent—are now eligible for a private choice program.” Ten states now have universal or near-universal school choice laws: seven Education Savings Account programs, two voucher programs, and one tax credit program. Each of these approaches empowers parents to choose the best education options for their children. States can learn valuable lessons from each other's policy approaches as they craft programs that suit the needs of their own families and voters. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coffeewithcascade/message

Today we've invited Michael McShane to the podcast to discuss something called "Hybrid Homeschooling." What exactly is hybrid homeschooling and does it use less gas than regular homeschooling, that is the question of the day.Mike is the Director of Research at EdChoice, which is a non profit dedicated to expanding educational choice for parents around the country. Their website is EdChoice.org if you want to look them up.Mike used to teach English at St. Jude's Catholic school in Montgomery, Alabama, and there he got inspired to get his masters degree in Education from the University of Notre Dame, then his PhD from the University of Arkansas. He recently wrote a book called “Hybrid Homeschooling: A Guide to the Future of Education” which really caught our attention. First of all, we love that someone is writing about Homeschooling and second, we love investigating new and creative, outside the box, ways of turbocharging what we are already doing to accomplish more for our kids. Mike graciously accepted our invitation to come on the podcast and talk to us about his concept of hybrid homeschooling and how it's being used by parents around the country to give their kids the best possible educational experience. You can follow Mike on Twitter at @MQ_McShane.If you would like to ask a question about the topics discussed in this episode and have it aired on a future podcast, just email us an audio file of you asking the question: HomeSweetHomeschoolPodcast@gmail.com.

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1991 American action adventure film "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" directed by Kevin Reynolds, based on the English folk tale Robin Hood. Set during the 12th Century, the story follows Robin of Locksley (played by Kevin Costner) - a nobleman who chose to follow Richard the Lionheart, King of England, during their Third Crusade to the Holy Land - who finds himself escaping imprisonment in Jerusalem and eventually returning to his home country of England, with a fellow prisoner, Azeem (played by Morgan Freeman) - who now owes Robin a life-debt for saving his life. However, after eventually returning to England, Robin discovers that the cruel Sheriff of Nottingham (played by Alan Rickman) now rules the lands of England - aided by his cousin Guy of Gisbourne (played by Michael Wincott), the witch Mortiana (played by Geraldine McEwan), and the corrupt Bishop of Hereford (played by Harold Innocent) - and who was directly responsible for the death of Robin's father, Lord Locksley (played by Brian Blessed). After briefly reuniting with Lady Marrion (played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) - a childhood sweetheart of Robin's - in order to relay a message to her from her brother, who died whole imprisoned in Jerusalem - Robin, with the threat of death hanging over his head, becomes at outlaw and gathers together a merry band of fellow outlaws - including Will Scarlet (played by Christian Slater) and Little John (played by Nick Brimble) - living within Sherwood Forest, who are eventually joined by Friar Tuck (played by Michael McShane), who decide to retaliate against the Sheriff of Nottingham by robbing the riches intended for him and redistributing them to the poor. The film depicts "Robin Hood" as he fights to clear his family name, as he fights to free England from the scurge of the Sheriff of Nottingham, and as he attempts to unite the people of England by inspiring them with tales of his deeds and by sharing his belief that all men and women are equal to one another and that wealth should be distributed to those who need it the most. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

We hereby dub this month Hot August Knights and begin with Diana's pick Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991). It should be no surprise that she continually gushes about Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham. Polina prefers Kevin Costner brooding in sports movies. When Robin and his Moorish companion come to England and the tyranny of the Sheriff of Nottingham, he decides to fight back as an outlaw. A high-school diploma is widely considered to be the most fundamental requirement for admission to college or a chance at a good job. And so it should be—but what’s behind that diploma matters, too. Statistics from ACT show that only 30 percent of the class of 2015 scored "college ready" in all four tested subjects. Much of the problem appears to be a gap between the coursework these students complete to earn their high-school diplomas and the work required for their college classes. Here Missouri faces a problem that doesn’t afflict more densely populated states: we have many small, rural school districts that don’t have the means to offer advanced math and science courses for college-bound students—or cutting-edge career or technical education classes for students who want to enter the workforce immediately after graduating—especially if relatively few students are interested in taking them. We can’t do a lot about our state’s geography, but neither can we accept limitations on the educational options available to students in smaller school districts. We need a way to bring advanced-level coursework to every Missouri student who wants it. An innovative program called course access offers a possible solution to this problem, and it’s the topic of an essay by the Show-Me Institute’s Brittany Wagner and Michael McShane. To find out more, click on the link below and read the essay. http://showmeinstitute.org/blog/school-choice/rural-schools-need-course-access
