When Brittany Wagner reached out to be on the program, I honestly didn't know that she was on a dock-series that I'd added to my Netflix queue called "Last Chance U." I started to go through some of the episodes and found Brittany to be, indeed, the breakout star of the show. We spoke about the honest and vulnerability she put into her book, "Next Chance You: Tools, Tips, and Tough Love for Bringing Your A-Game to Life" along with elements that she and those she mentors face time and time again – things like the importance of choice and dealing with overwhelm. I didn't know quite what to expect going into this conversation. But once I was in it, I really enjoyed it. I trust you will, too. In her new book, Next Chance You, Wagner offers a roadmap to move forward from where readers currently are in life. “We are all a product of our experiences, but none of us are stuck. We sometimes lack the courage or knowledge to move forward and create different,” Wagner says. “I want to inspire and equip people to believe in who they are and start from where they are to evolve, create and believe in something better. The starting line may be different for each of us, but none of us are operating on our 'last chance.' There is hope! We will have a 'next chance' and I want to equip the readers with the mindset to see it, believe in it and go for it.” Using practical strategies and empowering examples from her own life and those she has counseled, Wagner will show readers how to build positive daily habits, overcome obstacles, and develop a growth mindset. Included at the end of most chapters are Sharpen Up! activities to allow readers the opportunity to self-reflect and apply ideas from each chapter. BRITTANY WAGNER is the breakout star of the hit Netflix docuseries Last Chance U, which followed the top-ranked junior college football team at East Mississippi Community College, where Brittany served as athletic academic counselor. I have a confession to make. I am the last person to subscribe to Netflix (at least it feels that way). I was getting ready for a family spring break trip. When traveling with our son, the question at night is always, "what are we going to do?". Not wanting to spend the exorbitant cost of pay-per-view movies at the hotel, I decided it was time to sign up for Netflix. So, I took advantage of the first month free offer and downloaded Netflix to my Amazon Fire TV Stick. Now, packing and preparing for our trip included adding some movies and shows to my watch list. One of the Netflix shows I had heard so much about and the first I had to watch was Last Chance U. As you probably know (it also feels like I'm the last person to watch it), Last Chance U is a Netflix docudrama about the football program at East Mississippi Community College. The program has been built around being a landing spot for many players who have been dismissed from Power Five programs, usually for academics or disciplinary reasons. The program has become a junior college (JUCO) football powerhouse, winning four national championships in the last seven seasons. While Last Chance U features the team's lightening rod coach, Buddy Stephens, and his players, many of whom are on their "last chance", another major personality of the show is Brittany Wagner, the then athletic academic counselor at East Mississippi. I knew right away I wanted to have Brittany on the podcast. For me, Brittany represented so many of the unsung individuals who are non-coaches but also play prominent roles in the lives of athletes. I have seen first hand the positive impact a caring counselor, teacher or principal can have on a young athlete's life. I knew her insight and experiences were something coaches and administrators listening to the podcast could find of value. In this episode, Brittany calls journalist Drew Jubera, who was originally assigned to the GQ story that led to Last Chance U on Netflix. (In fact, he even came up with the title.) This episode is the first time we really hear from Brittany about some of her favorite (and least favorite) memories from the show, including controversial figures (Coach Buddy Stevens) and beloved students (Ronald Ollie). She asks Drew about Stevens - is he really an a**hole? - and Drew's favorite memories from Scooba, Miss. From old Coke machines to summer practice fields to why Drew thinks a junior college player led to the Patriots winning the Super Bowl two years ago, this episode is a fascinating listen. “When you start winning, people start paying attention.” The MindSide Podcast struck gold this week as we brought on the star of the Netflix documentary, Last Chance U, founder of 10 Thousand Pencils, and nationwide inspiration leader, Brittany Wagner. Wagner has made a dent in the world of college athletics as she has turned her dream of impacting young athletes into a reality. In the show, Last Chance U, Brittany helped the football team of East Mississippi Community College become more than just a group of jocks who had no future other than football, "I had no expectations." Coming from a family with a psychologist as a father and a special education teacher as a mother, Brittany knew from her youth that she had a greater purpose. "This is what I was born to do." Inside this podcast, Wagner digs into the realities young athletes are faced with every day. She discusses how most college athletes are already given labels based on stereotypical judgement from their peers and even some authority figures. "These labels we place on these kids prohibits them from really figuring out their potential on their own." There is an underlining issue that is raised when these athletes are already told what path they "should" or "need" to go on to reach a society's definition of success. "I think we do a horrible job helping these athletes navigate the pressure of being a college athlete." Brittany compares a college football player's situation in Scuba, Mississippi, to a hypothetical situation where she is the one putting on the football gear in the locker room and then getting tackled on the field and feeling that shame and public humiliation that these kids must feel in the classroom. "They are unequipped." Wagner brings her own opinions on the educational deficiencies that these college athletes must climb past to reach success outside of the game. “We can teach them how to be true to themselves.” Brittany has started her own company, 10 Thousand Pencils to provide academic counseling services to student athletes everywhere. Last Chance U's Brittany Wagner Talks Academics in College Athletics
I think it was last summer when Melanie and I first talked about Last Chance U. We both binge-watched season one of the Netflix series, and in addition to discussing it on the podcast, there were several times when we talked on the phone about it because we were so fascinated by a certain player or could not believe how someone reacted. Then, in episode 78 I mentioned that I'd watched season 2 and found it just as magical as season 1 (though, as I have often pointed out, the language is terrible). Anyway. All that to say: you can imagine our delight when Brittany Wagner, the academic counselor on LCU, agreed to be our special guest on episode 79. It was THE MOST FUN. So, in this episode, Melanie and I talk to Brittany about football and clothes and beauty products. (I should mention that I make a critical error and identify Mississippi State's season where they were ranked #1 as the 2015 season...but it was 2014...so I beg a thousand pardons.) We also hear about some of the players she'll be watching play D-1 this fall - and how her new career adventure got started (it's such a neat story). After Melanie and I finish our conversation with Brittany, we launch into a discussion about music, what we're cooking, and a whole host of unrelated items. In other words: business as usual. Here's where you can get more info on the stuff / products / places we mention: - Brittany Wagner - Last Chance U on Netflix - Last Chance U - GQ article from 2014 - Ronald Ollie (spoiler if you haven't watched the show yet) - Dakota Allen (spoiler if you haven't watched the show yet) - 2013 Egg Bowl (the beginning of my irrational maternal affection for Dak Prescott) - The Red Cat Coffee House - 10K Pencils (Brittany's new company) - Frozen (and here's a post I (Sophie) wrote about some of the reasons I loved it so much) - Teddie Organics Rose Hip Oil (I've started using it since we recorded this podcast, and I AM A CONVERT) - Allure Beauty Box - Bare Minerals - Too-Faced Better than Sex mascara - Hummingbird Farms lavender body oil - Cool Sculpting - Nichole Nordeman's Every Mile Mattered - Yum Yum Sauce - Rita Springer's "Defender" - All in All playlist (and here on Apple Music) - The Popcast - "More Nos of Weddings" ***** - Melanie's new book - Church of the Small Things - Sophie's new journaling devotional - All in All - Melanie on Twitter and Instagram - Sophie on Twitter and Instagram

In this episode of Keep Moving Forward I interview collegiate athletic academic advisor, founder of 10000 Pencils, LLC, and breakout star of the Netflix Original Series, “Last Chance U”, Brittany Wagner. “When you follow your passions, doors open and you just fall into things.” Work hard every single day, walk through every door that is open to you, and seize every opportunity you can as you keep moving forward on your journey in pursuit of your passions. Brittany Wagner’s own story as well as the stories of the student athlete’s she has dedicated her life to helping, reflect this same narrative of progress. As an academic advisor at East Mississippi Community College, Brittany has helped too many student athletes realize their dreams and move onto Division I and professional programs, to count. After highlighting this university’s football program as well as Brittany’s impressive impact on the student athlete’s there in the Netflix original series, “Last Chance U”, Brittany’s fame exploded overnight. Her social media presence gained so much traction that she decided to use it as a platform to help more students than she ever anticipated she could. Recently, Brittany launched her very own academic athletic counseling service, 10000 Pencils, LLC, named from her signature phrase from the show “do you have a pencil?” Brittany’s company is taking off, as is her career as a public speaker and motivator of the student athlete. I learned so much from speaking with Brittany and I am excited for you to experience all the insight she has to offer. I hope that you all enjoy my interview with a woman who fosters the guidance and support every student athlete needs, Brittany Wagner. For more on Brittany, you can follow her on Twitter and Instagram @Brittany_MSGirl, and check out http://brittanybwagner.com/. A high-school diploma is widely considered to be the most fundamental requirement for admission to college or a chance at a good job. And so it should be—but what’s behind that diploma matters, too. Statistics from ACT show that only 30 percent of the class of 2015 scored "college ready" in all four tested subjects. Much of the problem appears to be a gap between the coursework these students complete to earn their high-school diplomas and the work required for their college classes. Here Missouri faces a problem that doesn’t afflict more densely populated states: we have many small, rural school districts that don’t have the means to offer advanced math and science courses for college-bound students—or cutting-edge career or technical education classes for students who want to enter the workforce immediately after graduating—especially if relatively few students are interested in taking them. We can’t do a lot about our state’s geography, but neither can we accept limitations on the educational options available to students in smaller school districts. We need a way to bring advanced-level coursework to every Missouri student who wants it. An innovative program called course access offers a possible solution to this problem, and it’s the topic of an essay by the Show-Me Institute’s Brittany Wagner and Michael McShane. To find out more, click on the link below and read the essay. http://showmeinstitute.org/blog/school-choice/rural-schools-need-course-access
