Would you like to be better at getting yourself to move? When you have an overall desire, but find yourself struggling to take the first step and just get going? I think we all do in certain areas of our lives and from what I experience it is getting worse. So I've brought on an expert and we're going to exaggerate the point to help us better conceptualize what is happening when we don't move and progress, and some different ways to go about it. Michele Rigby Assad was a normal person like everyone else. But through some circumstances you're about to hear of, she became a CIA operative and spent a decade working in the Middle East. She took part in the high-stakes missions you would expect from working in the CIA, where your life or other's lives are literally on the line. The place of danger they referred to as the X, and their training was that no matter what, they had to be able to get off the X. Michele has outlined the concepts with some intriguing stories, in a new book titled, Get Off The X: C.I.A. Secrets For Conquering Obstacles And Achieving Your Life's Mission. In this conversation, we don't spend time talking about the CIA, if you want to view that, she says go watch Homeland or The Agency. We talk about how the concepts of getting off the X relate to all of us. We live lives that feel high-stakes for us, and we need to…move. Progress. Get off the X's we are stuck in. I found Michele's guidance helping me not feel I needed more motivation or inspiration, I just needed to have some pragmatic tools and perspectives to employ. Hollywood focus on the CIA Is It Correct? Her Experience. Hollywood has long been fascinated with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Blockbuster franchises such as Mission Impossible, The Bourne Identity, and TV series like Homeland have shaped the public perception of the CIA as a high-stakes world filled with thrilling missions, cutting-edge gadgets, and international espionage. But how much of this portrayal aligns with reality? Her powerful story is in a recent podcast interview on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, available on their website and platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Michele Rigby Assad, a former CIA officer, is a guest on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast and gives her firsthand experience that challenges the Hollywood narrative. Michele Rigby Assad defies the Hollywood stereotype of a CIA agent. Her journey from a small-town upbringing in Florida to working in counterterrorism operations worldwide presents a different, truthful story about life inside the CIA. Unlike the stereotypical male-dominated, action-packed spy films, Michele’s experience as a covert officer reveals the agency’s rigorous training, intense challenges, and the real-world implications of intelligence work. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. The CIA vs. Hollywood’s Portrayal Hollywood often glamorizes intelligence work, focusing on thrilling chases, daring rescues, and sophisticated gadgets. While some elements are inspired by real operations, many aspects are greatly exaggerated. Michele Rigby Assad sheds light on the truth behind the agency’s operations. Hollywood focus on the CIA Is It Correct? Her Experience. Read the supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium, Newsbreak and Blogspot. According to the CIA’s official website, the agency is described as "the Nation’s first line of defense," operating where others cannot to ensure national security. Formed from the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II, the CIA’s purpose has always been intelligence gathering, covert operations, and counterintelligence efforts. Unlike the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which primarily focuses on domestic law enforcement, the CIA is dedicated to overseas intelligence operations, often working behind the scenes to influence global events. Wikipedia provides a more detailed historical perspective, describing the CIA as a civilian foreign intelligence service responsible for collecting and analyzing security information, mainly through human intelligence (HUMINT). The agency is headquartered at the George Bush Center for Intelligence in Langley, Virginia. While its primary function is intelligence gathering, the CIA has historically been involved in various covert actions, including political influence, supporting foreign groups, and, in some cases, planning assassinations and regime changes. Listen to the interview as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. Michele Rigby Assad’s Experience She entered the agency with no prior military or law enforcement background. Yet, she excelled in the high-stakes world of intelligence, working alongside her husband on counterterrorism missions in war-torn regions. Hollywood focus on the CIA Is It Correct? Her Experience. Her experiences are documented in her book Breaking Cover, where she introduces the concept of "Get Off the X." This CIA survival technique teaches officers to escape deadly ambushes as quickly as possible. She applies this philosophy to life outside intelligence, urging individuals to overcome fear and obstacles to achieve success. Her book highlights not only the physical dangers of her career but also the psychological challenges of living undercover, making split-second decisions, and adapting to constantly shifting threats. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. Beyond her work in intelligence, Michele has transitioned into corporate risk assessment, business mediation, and government diplomacy. She offers training for organizations seeking expertise in Arab World politics and culture, helping companies navigate geopolitical complexities and security risks. The Role of Media in Shaping Perceptions The influence of Hollywood in shaping public opinion about the CIA cannot be understated. Through our platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and the interview which is free is on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast platforms. You'll find that the narratives presented in films and television often become the de facto understanding of intelligence work. But is Hollywood’s focus on the CIA correct? While it offers an entertaining and dramatized version, the real stories, like Michele Rigby Assad’s, reveal a far more complex and demanding profession. Intelligence officers must be adaptable, resilient, and capable of handling high-pressure situations. Unlike their fictional counterparts, their work is often slow, methodical, and requires years of dedication without the promise of recognition. Hollywood focus on the CIA Is It Correct? Her Experience. Check out the show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms Hollywood’s portrayal of the CIA is designed for entertainment, not accuracy. While elements of truth exist, much of what we see on screen is exaggerated for dramatic effect. Michele Rigby Assad’s real-life experience provides a more authentic look into the agency, showcasing the challenges and sacrifices intelligence officers make. Her story is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and courage in one of the world’s most secretive professions. When social media and news platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Apple News, Spotify, Podcast, Newsbreak, Medium, and Truth shape public discourse, it’s crucial to differentiate between cinematic fiction and reality. Understanding the true nature of intelligence work helps us appreciate the dedication of those who serve in silence, often far from the limelight of Hollywood’s glamorous portrayal. https://amzn.to/2T0s3os The CIA is looking for walking contradictions. Recruiters seek out potential agents who can keep a secret yet pull classified information out of others; who love their country but are willing to leave it behind for dangerous places; who live double lives, but can be trusted with some of the nation's most highly sensitive tasks. Michele Rigby Assad was one of those people. As a CIA agent and a counterterrorism expert, Michele soon found that working undercover was an all-encompassing job. The threats were real; the assignments perilous. Michele spent over a decade in the agency―a woman leading some of the most highly skilled operatives on the planet, secretly serving in some of the most treacherous areas of the Middle East, and at risk as a target for ISIS. But deep inside, Michele wondered: Could she really do this job? Had she misunderstood what she thought was God's calling on her life? Did she have what it would take to survive?

The more you have, the better the communication. Respect is critical. Treat everyone with respect and train your teams to do the same. At the start of the episode, Michele explained that the CIA tactics of connecting with people are completely applicable in every business. We also discussed that every meeting is a negotiation we need to be prepared for. We also spoke about: The importance of body language Why we should always aim to be the smartest person in the room How telling our stories can help us build connections more easily Regardless of the industry we're in, if we want to be successful, we have to make connections with people. To build connections with better results, we have to go into meetings armed with information, and know what we have in common with the people we're meeting. Throughout the process, remember to be respectful; when we're dealing with human beings, it's easy to draw conclusions prematurely. But if we can train ourselves and our teams to treat everyone respectfully, we'll be well on our way to building stronger, more effective connections. "Though trepidation has haunted me every step of this journey, I have a trusted force that I cannot see." —Michele Rigby Assad, Breaking Cover: My secret life in the CIA and what it taught me about what's worth fighting for When faced with life-or-death situations on a daily basis, Michele Rigby Assad knew she had to turn to something greater than herself for support. Drawn toward international affairs as a child obsessed with reading National Geographic, she later spent 10 years working undercover in the CIA, interrogating terrorists while stationed in the most dangerous war zones across the Middle East. Michele's journey is a fascinating one, and I loved our first conversation so much (listen here) that I asked her back for round two to celebrate her book, Breaking Cover, launching this week!! After a seven year journey with this project, we talk about finding courage in unexpected places, trusting that puzzle pieces are falling into place even when she felt stuck or blocked, and how allowing herself to "be shaped" has provided far greater blessings and guidance than she could have ever imagined.

"Was it hard to be a CIA officer with all of the challenges and change that entailed? Yes. Scary? Of course. But if I was going to fulfill my life mission, I had to conquer my instinctual tendency to freeze in place. Fear would get me nowhere. Faith, however, would take me to places I could never have imagined." —Michele Rigby Assad, Breaking Cover: My secret life in the CIA and what it taught me about what's worth fighting for Grab a cup of coffee or tea and settle in, because this weeks guest is a fascinating one, a one-of-a-kind woman I'm lucky to call a friend. Michele Assad was a self-described "sweet, faith-based southern girl" in high school, the last you'd expect to become an international undercover agent for the CIA, interrogating terrorists while stationed at war zones across the Middle East. But that's exactly what she did for ten years with her husband in a real-life Mr. and Mrs. Smith situation. In this conversation we dive into what it was like to work as a woman in interrogation rooms even when everyone told her she'd only succeed behind the scenes doing paperwork; the role of faith in Michele's career, how she honed her skills around intuition and reading body language, and what it's like for her to "come out" and try to build a public-facing platform after so many years of being required to keep her entire life secret.
In a Post-9/11 world, the threat of extremist terrorists is a concerning and much-politicized fear for many. We’ve all seen the movies and read the stories of counter-terrorism efforts by the CIA. It may come as a surprise to you, then, that the CIA’s real front man for many undercover anti-terror missions in the Middle East was not actually a man at all. Against all odds and expectations, Michelle Rigby Assad led many successful missions in a male-dominated field within a male-dominated culture. How in the world did she do it? Today, I sit down with Michelle to talk about her upcoming book, Breaking Cover, where she shares how she became a CIA agent, used her knowledge of Arab culture and language to earn her spot in the Debriefing Room, and then go deep undercover over in the Middle East. It was always a little like walking a tightrope between knowing she was the right woman for the job, and dealing with the insecurities and self-doubt that many of us experience even in less dangerous situations. Michelle puts on display true empathy, honor, and intelligence, proving that your unique gifts are what make you invaluable, not your appearance and gender. I can’t wait for you to hear her incredible stories today as we navigate what it means to be a woman in the world. You can read the full show notes at www.alexandrajamieson.com
