In this week's parasha , Shelach , the Jewish People were tested in emunah and bitachon and they failed. Kalev tried to give them chizuk , saying, "Hashem wants us to go in, we have nothing to fear." But it didn't help. The pasuk says סלחתי כדבריך ואולם חי אני – Hashem forgave them but they were not going to be allowed into Eretz Yisrael . Most mefarshim explain סלחתי כדבריך to mean Hashem forgave them for the עגל, but not for the meraglim . And that's why they were not allowed into Israel. The reason both sins are mentioned in the same pasuk is because both of them were due to a lack of bitachon . By the עגל, Hashem tested the people by showing them a vision which made it appear that Moshe Rabbenu was not coming back. They knew that the mann was in the merit of Moshe and so they feared without Moshe they would go hungry. Their test was they should have realized Hashem is the One supporting them. It is true that Hashem gives us things in the merit of tzaddikim , but He also gives us new tzaddikim when the ones we had were taken away. The Gemara says that one time the entire world was being sustained in the merit of Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa. But what happened when Rab Chanina ben Dosa passed away? There was still sustenance being given. The reason is because it is Hashem who gives sustenance and He is never bound by any one means to give it. The Jewish People received water in the midbar in the merit of Miriam. But when Miriam passed away, Hashem still continued giving them water in the zechut of Moshe. The Clouds of Glory were given in the merit of Aharon, but when Aharon passed away, Hashem brought the clouds back in the merit of Moshe. Then when Moshe passed away, Hashem continued helping His People through Yehoshua. Hashem is always the One who is taking care of us and He wants us to feel that in our hearts. He wants us to internalize that He is unlimited and has infinite ways of helping. When someone had an avenue of parnasa that is no longer producing the same money it used to, this person is being tested with the same type of test. Is he going to believe that it was the means that was supporting him, or that it was Hashem? No matter how good a person thinks he used to have it, Hashem could always make it even better. A man said his wife works as a nurse's aid at people's homes. Before she gave birth, she worked for a nice old lady and they both enjoyed the relationship and the pay was good too. When she gave birth, a substitute was put there instead and when her paid vacation ended, the substitute didn't want to leave. She too had fallen in love with this nice old lady. Instead of making a fuss about it, the man's wife set out to start over from the beginning. She tried several places but nothing was available. Frustrated, she started getting angry at the substitute who took her job. But then she caught herself and worked on her emunah. She managed to remove the anger from her heart and feel at ease, knowing she was in Hashem's Hands. The very same afternoon that she was finally calm, she got a call from an agency with a new offer. The lady she was given to work for was also very sweet like the other lady. This job gave her more hours and more pay and was much closer to her house. She thought she had it good before and would never get the same opportunity, now she has it much better. We are never dependent on one means in any area of life. Hashem is the One who provides the means and He is unlimited. And we are to know that He was, is and always will be there to help us. Shabbat Shalom.
In this Parsha Review of Parshas Shelach, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the tragic episode of the spies and uncovers a powerful lesson about perspective, positivity, and the way we choose to see the world. The Torah juxtaposes the story of the spies with Miriam's punishment for speaking negatively about Moshe Rabbeinu. Rashi explains that the spies witnessed Miriam's consequences yet failed to learn the lesson. Their true failure was not merely that they spoke negatively about the Land of Israel—it was that they approached the mission with a flawed perspective. When a person looks through a lens of negativity, even a land flowing with milk and honey appears frightening and impossible. A central theme of the episode is that reality is often shaped by the attitude with which we approach it. Rabbi Wolbe draws from the Talmudic discussion regarding how one praises a bride, explaining that true wisdom is learning to recognize and focus on the good that already exists. The spies saw giants, danger, and obstacles because they were looking for problems. Yehoshua and Kalev saw opportunity, promise, and Divine blessing because they were looking through eyes of faith. The difference was not the facts—they all saw the same land. The difference was perspective. Rabbi Wolbe extends this lesson to modern relationships, parenting, leadership, politics, and personal growth. Negative thinking creates a cycle where criticism breeds more criticism and conflict breeds more conflict. Positive thinking, however, creates momentum toward understanding, gratitude, and growth. Whether in marriage, family life, community leadership, or our relationship with Hashem, the challenge is to break cycles of negativity and intentionally cultivate a positive outlook. The episode concludes with a call to adjust our spiritual "glasses" so that we learn to see blessing, opportunity, and goodness where others may only see problems._____________This episode of the Parsha Review Podcast is dedicated in honor of Lenny & Teresa FriedmanDownload & Print the Parsha Review Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ncaRyoH5iJmGGoMZs9y82Hz2ofViVouv?usp=sharingRecorded at TORCH Meyerland in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on June 12, 2026, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on June 12, 2026_____________Subscribe: Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parsha-review-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1651930083)Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/22lv1kXJob5ZNLaAl6CHTQ) to stay inspired! The spies were righteous leaders, yet greatness offered no immunity from failure. Rabbi Dunner explores why Yehoshua needed Moshe's prayer, why Kalev prayed at Chevron, and why humility is not weakness but spiritual protection. From leadership and groupthink to tzitzis and prayer, this shiur reveals how honest vulnerability gives us the courage to face giants without losing faith in God.

What role does cybersecurity play when the battlefield extends beyond Earth's atmosphere? In this special episode recorded live in Tallinn for the fifth anniversary of the Software Defined Space Conference, I sit down with Kalev Koidumäe, CEO of the Estonian Defence and Aerospace Industry Association, to explore how software and security are transforming the future of space and defense. Kalev shares how Estonia, a nation of just 1.3 million people, has built global credibility through innovation, collaboration, and cyber resilience. From the lessons of the 2007 state-level cyberattack to the country's integration of space technologies within NATO's defense framework, Estonia has developed a model that combines agility with strategic foresight. Our conversation spans everything from the evolution of Estonia's space sector to its growing ecosystem of AI-driven defense technologies, autonomous systems, and satellite solutions. Kalev also explains how lessons from the war in Ukraine are reshaping Europe's defense landscape and accelerating the need for resilient, software-defined systems. What makes this discussion particularly fascinating is the balance Estonia maintains between national sovereignty and international cooperation. Kalev explains how the country's reserve army model, cyber education initiatives, and public-private partnerships have created an ecosystem where innovation is both strategic and deeply rooted in civic responsibility. It's a blueprint for how smaller nations can play a meaningful role in global security through ingenuity and collaboration. As the world navigates an era of heightened geopolitical tension and rapid technological advancement, this discussion offers a glimpse into how small nations can make a big impact in securing both cyberspace and outer space. So what can larger nations learn from Estonia's approach to innovation, readiness, and cyber defense? And how might software continue to redefine the future of space security? Share your thoughts after listening.

Every single good deed—and even a good thought—in Avodat Hashem is incredibly precious. When a person sees in the future the immense reward given for even the smallest intention, he will wish he had done more. Sometimes, even one thought of teshuvah can change everything. In this week's parashah, we read about the earth opening up and swallowing all those who joined in Korach's rebellion. Yet the Torah tells us that the sons of Korach did not die. Chazal explain that at the very last second, just before they were swallowed, they had a thought of teshuvah—and that alone saved them. The Midrash emphasizes that they didn't even have enough time to speak a word of repentance. Hashem accepted their teshuvah based solely on a thought. In last week's parashah, we learned that Kalev was promised he would enter the Land and that his children would receive an inheritance there. Rav Moshe Feinstein, in Darash Moshe , asks what Kalev did to earn such a great reward. He answers that when Kalev spoke up against the spies and expressed Emunah that Hashem could bring them into the land, for a brief moment the Jewish people believed him. Although they quickly reverted to fear and doubt, that fleeting moment of emunah was considered a moment of teshuvah. It was so precious that it brought great merit—not just to the people—but to Kalev himself as their source of inspiration. We should never underestimate anything we do in our service of Hashem. It is never "all or nothing." Every small act counts. A man shared that he had been walking with his friend Chaim, when Chaim's phone rang with a reminder that his hour of shemirat halashon was about to begin. The man found it odd—why keep it for only one hour if we are obligated to guard our speech all the time? Chaim explained that of course we try to keep these halachot at all times, but even setting aside one hour of extra vigilance is extremely valuable. It's a way to strengthen ourselves and build up consistency. Every extra moment of self-control is meaningful. Chaim then told a story he knew firsthand. His parents' neighbor, Nitzan, once called him asking for guidance on how to become fully observant. Until then, Nitzan had not kept mitzvot but said that something happened that completely changed his outlook. A few months prior, he had decided to keep a small part of Shabbat—from midnight on Friday night until 10 a.m. Shabbat morning. People laughed at him when they heard this, thinking it strange and inconsistent, but he felt it was a meaningful step he could take. He kept his commitment seriously. On one Friday night, he was out driving with friends and saw that it was 11:30 p.m. He told them firmly that no matter where they were, he would be getting out of the car at 11:50. His friends tried to persuade him to stay with them until around 12:15, but he wouldn't budge. At 11:50, he stepped out of the car and turned off his phone. He was far from home, so he slept on a bench and planned to take a taxi at 10 a.m. when his personal observance of Shabbat would end. When he got home the next morning, his parents were overwhelmed with joy and tears. They had just heard that the car he had been in the night before was in a devastating accident. Everyone in the car had died. They thought he had been with them. He told them that it was his decision to keep even a small part of Shabbat that had saved his life. That moment became a turning point for Nitzan. He decided from then on that he wanted to become fully observant. Every little act in Avodat Hashem matters. Even a moment of restraint, a fleeting thought of teshuvah, or a limited commitment can be the key to transformation—or even salvation. We can never underestimate the power and value of the smallest efforts or intentions. Shabbat Shalom

At any rate, in practice we must conclude that Yehoshua and Kalev did remain Moshe's shluchim, as the verse states (in revi'i of parashas Shelach) “Of those men, Yehoshua and Kalev remained alive….” Moreover, as Rashi states, Yehoshua and Kalev were given the portion of the other spies in Eretz Yisroel, implying that they completed the other spies' portion of the mission as well. This is because by bringing the Jewish people to regret their actions, the mission was completed etc. The lesson is that one must persist in drawing a Jew near “even a hundred times”; even if one doesn't immediately see results, and even if others who initially tried have already given up – one must not be discouraged, but must continue to draw him near etc.Excerpt from sichah of Motzaei Shabbos parashas Shelach, Mevorchim Tammuz 5738 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=18-06-2025 לזכות ר' דוד שמעון ישראל בן שלומית שי' ליום ההולדת שלו כ"ב סיון - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות

As explained there, the connection between the two verses is that it is specifically “If Hashem desires us,” the inner desire (the inner dimension of Kesser) which totally transcends limitation (the level of “very, very”) that is revealed in the land. Thus, whereas the spies wanted to remain in the desert and to fulfill mitzvos in a spiritual sense (in the realm of thought or the realm of speech etc.), Yehoshua and Kalev proclaimed, “The land is very, very good” – the main goal is to fulfill the mitzvos practically, and this requires actually entering the land. Similarly, nowadays it is not enough to “enter the land” in a spiritual sense; the main thing is the coming of the true and complete Redemption, and the “land flowing with milk and honey” literally.2 excerpts from sichah of Monday night, parashah Shelach, 12 Sivan 5744. There is not much I enjoy more than sitting down with one of the most innovative thinkers in compliance; Carsten Tams, to find out what is on his mind regarding compliance. I recently had the opportunity to do so on the topic of making compliance training memorable. Over this short five-part series we will introduce the problem and challenges and then provide you with four game changing strategies you can employee for success in your compliance training. In this Episode 2, we discuss the concept of focusing on strengths within compliance and ethics training, as opposed to traditional deficit-based methods that highlight potential misconduct. When we instruct people about prohibited behaviours, and how the company detects and discipline misconduct, employees often feel mistrusted and alienated. They tune out. This is deficit-based learning. It approaches the learner as a risk factor or potential delinquent. It aims to constrain unwanted behaviour. When employees can learn how to effectively shape and safeguard the ethical workplace they aspire to, they feel inspired and tune in. This is strength-based training. It approaches the learner as a valued partner in maintaining integrity. It assumes that people have capabilities, It aims at eliciting and strengthening the positive ethical faculties already present in most people. Tom and Carsten urge a shift in perspective so that learners are viewed as valued partners, drawing upon the principles of self-affirmation theory and strength-based approaches found in various sectors like healthcare and education. This approach aims to engage learners by acknowledging and enhancing their capabilities, ethical values, and problem-solving skills, thus fostering a sustainable ethical culture within organizations. Examples of successful applications of this approach, including innovative training methods and programs like UNESCO's card game and the 'Giving Voice to Values' curriculum, are highlighted. The conversation underscores the importance of designing training that not only prevents misconduct but also supports and develops employees' strengths, thereby enhancing overall company culture. President Joe Biden is not doing Israel a favor by saying his administration will not support an IDF counterattack against Iran. He's not doing America, the West or the civilized world a favor, either. Rather, he's giving Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and the evil forces of terror a hat tip to the notion that America is going to stand by and do nothing -- and that's all it takes to stir the pot. Evil will exploit America's weakness. Stay tuned for more attacks against Israel; more unrest in the Middle East; more terror, more chaos, more mayhem and more security risks to the Jewish state as well as to America and the West. Gol Kalev, author of "Judaism 3.0," and an Israel-based columnist, talks about the recent Iran attacks on his country and what it means for the security of the free world.

The level of press freedom in Kenya media outlets is among the highest in East Africa, according to the most recent World Press Freedom Index. And Reuters' research claims that trust in the news grew by six percent last year in Kenya, right after an election. However, there is still much work to be done when it comes to making newsrooms a safe place for Kenyan women. According to a survey from Women in News in early 2022, about 90% of women working in Kenyan media reported they were likely to be sexually harassed while on assignment. And for both women and gender nonconforming respondents, more than half said they expected to face sexual harassment in the workplace. Thankfully, leaders in Kenyan media have started to take meaningful steps to address this issue. On today's episode of the Hidden Economics of Remarkable Women, we will look at what actually works when it comes to ending sexual harassment at work. First, reporter Sharon Kiburi talks to Judie Kaberia. During her tenure as executive director of the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK), Kaberia helped Kenyan media outlets develop policies and procedures to tackle sexual harassment. Then, host Reena Ninan speaks with Prof. Alexandra Kalev, a Tel Aviv University associate professor of sociology and dean of the sociology and anthropology departments. Kalev and her colleague Harvard Prof. Frank Dobbin recently wrote a book together called Getting to Diversity. Among other workplace inclusivity topics, Kalev and Dobbin conducted groundbreaking research about how to decrease sexual harassment in the workplace. According to Kalev, most of the well-intentioned programs that they analyzed actually backfired. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Shelach | Why Did Yehoshua and Kalev Rend Their Clothes? by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom In addressing Yehoshua and Kalev's clothes-rending response to the people's insurrection, we examine the phenomenon of Keriat Begadim in Tanakh and its direct and consistent association with contrition. We also address a broader methodological issue of how we are often blinded to the development of characters in Tanakh as we imagine the final stanza of their life to be their lifelong refrain, imagining away development, growth, and change - for the better or for the worse. We then briefly examine the meaning of the word Efes which bridges the positive report about the land with the data about the resident nations. We then suggest a surprising approach to understanding the role of our two protagonists in the historically shattering dialogue. Source sheet >>

Work-life support programs have long been known to lower turnover and raise employee loyalty. But new research shows they also have a positive effect on promoting diversity among managers at those firms, an effect that's even stronger than that of some popular racial-equity programs. Alexandra Kalev chairs the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Tel Aviv University, and she explains why having strong, thoughtful policies around flexibility, time off, and dependent care pay off for companies. With Harvard sociologist Frank Dobbin, Kalev wrote the HBR article “The Surprising Benefits of Work/Life Support.”
