In Dante and the Mediterranean Comedy: From Muslim Spain to Post-Colonial Italy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022), Andrea Celli explores the complex ways in which Dante's Comedy could be considered ‘Mediterranean,' ranging widely from Orientalist scholarship to prison wall graffiti in Palermo. He presents both a history of criticism that explores the 20th-century debates around Dante and Islam as well as a novel approach to interrogating Mediterranean possibilities in the reception and appropriation of Dante's poem. Celli's Mediterranean Dante is neither given over to the ‘clash of civilizations' model nor to the idealized notion of a cultural melting pot, but instead to a nuanced perspective that moves beyond traditional binaries and paradigms. In a medieval mode, he draws attention to the possible use of Islamic sources in the punishment of Muhammad in Inferno 28 and explores affinities between Ibn Hazm's 11th-century Andalusian work Ring of the Dove and Dante's Vita Nuova. With an orientation to reception, he dwells at length on the 17th-century drawings and grafitti on the prison walls of the Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri in Palermo that see a blending of high and low culture and connect Dante to broader Mediterranean culture in early modern Sicily. Dante and the Mediterranean Comedy breaks new ground in assembling such materials and critical perspectives; it urges us to both read the Comedy through the heuristic tool of the Mediterranean and to read the field of Mediterranean studies through Dante. Akash Kumar is Assistant Professor of Italian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on medieval Italian literature through the lens of Mediterranean and global culture, from the history of science to the origins of popular phenomena such as the game of chess. Recent work on a global Dante has appeared in the volume Migrants Shaping Europe, Past and Present (Manchester UP, 2022), MLN (2022), and the Blackwell Companion to World Literature (2020). This week on The Mommy Labor Nurse Podcast we're going to talk about your cervix! To be more specific, we'll be diving into cervical checks and membrane sweeps. Your cervix is essential to birth and can often be used as an indicator of how “prepped” your body is for labor before labor even starts. Today, you'll learn how cervical checks are done, how to handle them, and the general pros and cons during pregnancy and labor. Then, we'll talk about membrane sweeps, which involve the cervix and are one of several things you can do to help jump-start labor. So, what exactly is a membrane sweep? Here's a hint, it has nothing to do with actual broom sweeping! Tune in to learn more. Want to birth without an epidural? When it comes to talking about birth, epidurals are often a part of the conversation in one way or another. And I'd guess that most of you already know that epidural placement eliminates labor pain. But beyond that? Well, a lot of people don't actually know that much! I often get questions about how epidurals are placed, how big an epidural needle is, if getting an epidural hurts, and lots more! So in this episode I unpack these epidural placement FAQs that frequently show up in my DMs. Additionally, you'll get a bit of deep dive into WALKING epidurals. Walking epidurals are very similar to a traditional epidural, but they allow for greater feeling and movement in the lower half of the body. This makes them very appealing to mamas that want a sort of “hybrid” birth experience. One where the edge is taken off the pain, but not so much that they can't move or feel the sensations of labor and delivery. Want to feel confident before your epidural birth? I'm going to talk about the reasons you might be induced and the various induction methods your provider may use.  But before we get into it, I want to quickly review what induction is, just in case you're not quite sure! Induction of labor is exactly what it sounds like: you aren't in labor yet so we put you into labor (or we attempt to push you into labor!) through different methods. There comes a point in pregnancy where the risk of continuing the pregnancy is actually greater than the benefits of keeping baby inside. And that point can be different for different moms! This week we have a full house at MLN. Daniel returns to join Eric, Zach, Chris and Scott to talk about Jordan Peele's new movie 'Nope'. Also on this episode we decide to finally put the nail in our credentials as podcast hosts by playing our first ever game of movie trivia. Oh Boy. Perhaps you'll leave us for ever? It certainly made me laugh though. Eric and Scott are quite clearly Soul Mates, so it's perfectly fitting the original MLN crew team up to talk about Cooper Raiff's superlative sophomore movie Cha Cha Real Smooth.

The Versus 22 Men's Conference was an awesome time! In today's episode, Jeff sits down with Grammy-Award Winning artist, Shay Mooney, to recap the evening. Plus, Shay shares his story of small-town beginnings and a lifelong walk with Christ. Shay's insights on fatherhood, the challenges of being a man, and the insufficiency of money and status are full of wisdom and built from experience. Whether or not you were able to attend Versus 22, this episode is for you. Shay identifies a whole host of challenges men experience in life, whether they know it or not. Comparison. Criticism. Sexual immorality. Anxiety. Stress. A big step toward improving ourselves as men is recognizing these problems and being vulnerable enough to share them with others. Being a man doesn't mean that you will never struggle. Being a man means acknowledging the difficulties we face and addressing them and bringing them to God and to the people God's put in our lives. Because when men handle troubles well, it helps their marriages, kids, and community. A fantastic opportunity to start to build a fellowship of guys is to get together for our five-week post-Versus Bible Study. You don't need to have been to the conference to participate, because our curriculum is designed to stand alone. This is a chance to build on the ideas we introduced at Versus 22 and reach out to any men in your life who couldn't attend. We'll provide all the materials you need — you just need to ask other men to join you. It's no big deal to ask a group of guys to watch sports or go fishing. Why not ask them to come together to grow in faith? As Shay suggests, if you just ask, they'll probably say yes... Although some coffee and food could really seal the deal! As the episode wraps up, you'll hear Shay's main takeaways he wants to share with you. Hear about what happens when you surrender to yourself and give things over to God. Shay tells us how things change in our lives when we choose to serve others and follow God even when we don't feel like it. The things you like to do don't have to be done on purpose. But, doing the things you need to do — even when it's not easy — is what makes a man faithful. Lastly, hear Shay's answer to the question that's become a tradition for the MLN podcast: what do you want your legacy to be? It's an important question for us all to answer, and we hope you're forming your answer and building that legacy as you continue to follow our monthly podcast.
